A joint federal-provincial approach in gathering basic information from industry on mine production, concentrator operations and ore reserves, initiated during 1978, is a major step toward the goal of achieving better government-industry communication through a common data base. Information from questionnaires sent out by provincial governments is shared with the federal government; correct interpretation is ensured by mine visits conducted jointly by provincial and federal representatives. Initial focus is on nonferrous metal mines. The federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) is responsible for a national analysis that is aimed at the early detection of worrisome developments-and their reasons-in the flow from resources to reserves and from reserves to supply of these metals. The heart of the national analysis is the annual construction of a "monitoring curve", showing each metal's aggregated mine production as it would decrease over time if no new reserves and production capacity were to be added from the year of analysis. For a given metal, a comparison of monitoring curves from year to year can reveal early signs of supply stagnation. In anyone year, a monitoring curve in conjunction with foreseen needs for Canadian mine output will show the production gap that would have to be filled from reserves and production capacity yet to be developed. The production gaps for copper, nickel, zinc and lead, the four leading base metals mined in Canada, are shown for the 20-year period ahead, in the context of production achieved during the past 20 years. It is shown that reserve levels commensurate with likely future production levels would require that average annual reserve additions during 1978-98 exceed the average annual additions during the preceding 20 years. Reserve levels of all four metals have declined in recent years. A review of significant discoveries in the last five years suggests that this fall in reserves is not the result of a lack of exploration successes, but of stagnation in development for various economic reasons.

Shaft lining reinforcing analysis of two shafts under construction has been presented in this study. The first shaft was driven from the surface, while the second was deepened. Mining and geological conditions have been studied with respect to the lining capacity. The improvement of shaft stability comprised two elements, i.e. reinforcement of the shaft lining capacity and improvement of the strength properties of the rock mass. In both tested cases, the particular hazard was connected with non uniform loadings of the lining, which could generate shearing stresses within lining structure. Thus such elements as armored concrete with high strength properties, bolting and injection sealing of the rock mass, and the use of special ring reinforcing the shaft lining have been used in order to reinforce the shaft-rock mass system. Practical conclusions related with new technological solutions, allowing the rock mass and shaft lining reinforcement, have been included for the present study. "The 2010/11 Canterbury earthquakes triggered many mass movements in the Port Hills including rockfalls, rock and debris avalanches, slides and slumps and associated cliff-top cracking. The most abundant mass movements with the highest risk to people and buildings were rockfalls and rock/debris avalanches. Over 100 residential homes were impacted by landslides, leading to the evacuation of several hundred residents.Volumes of rock leaving several of the larger cliffs during the earthquake sequence were determined from terrestrial laser scan change models. There were no seismically instrumented cliff sites and there was some distance between the cliffs and nearest strong-motion sites. Therefore, we synthesised free-field rock-outcrop seismograms by employing a stochastic approach controlled by source models and regional parameters derived using spectral inversion of the extensive strong motion data set. Relationships between volumes leaving cliffs during the earthquakes and site peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and Arias intensity were compared for different sites. Multiple linear regression was used to analyse the variables that best predict the volumes of debris that fell from the slopes during the main earthquakes. The best correlation between the volume of debris falling per square metre of slope face and the seismic forcing parameters was for vertical PGV. The results from the multiple linear regression incorporating slope height, inclination, PGV horizontal and PGV vertical, improved the statistical relationship.Field data and results from the 2D seismic site response assessment indicate that the following factors affect dynamic performance of the modelled cliffs: 1) cliff geology—mainly material modulus, shear strength and shear wave velocity; 2) slope geometry—ridge-scale versus site-scale effects; and 3) the temporal aspects of the earthquake shaking (i.e., single acceleration peaks of large amplitude versus multiple peaks of smaller amplitude). Model results show that amplification of shaking does not increase linearly with increasing height, but instead reflects changes in the cliff geology where material strength, modulus and shear-wave velocity contrasts lead to acceleration contrasts.These factors show that the use of well documented case histories provide the basis for more certainty in seismic landslide assessments compared to those that are only empirically based."

The primary purpose of ore hauling model studies is to capture the variability of the ore delivery ? stockpiling process in order to improve the estimation of equipment capacities and achievable throughputs. The operation of a mine-to-site ore delivery system is the subject of a number of challenges. Typically, ore is hauled by a given combination of trucks, conveyors and trains. In addition, ore loading, ore transferring to another means of delivery, stockpiling, reclaiming, and further deliveries involve many other types of equipment. The concurrent operation of all these units is scheduled; nevertheless, they are subject to planned maintenance and random breakdowns. To support our engineering design work on ore hauling operation, discrete event type models were built for each specific task. Then, due to recurring demands, an ore hauling library was gradually compiled. The now available model library allows fast and efficient simulation of various mine-to-site hauling arrangement, adaptable to various mining and mine construction operations (e.g. bauxite, iron ore, copper ore and coal).

"A detailed study of the compositional relationships of the Uand Th-bearing minerals in Elliot Lake uranium ores has been conducted, particularly with regard to uranothorite, which clearly plays a critical role in hydrometallurgical processing. Application of the rotating disc progressive-leaching technique to individual mineral grains and intergrowths of known compositions has defined for the first time the solubilization behaviour ofthe minerals in question.In descending order of leachability, regardless of leaching conditions, the phases are: uranothorite, uraninite, and monazite. Inclusions of secondary uranothorite enhance the dissolution kinetics of uraninite, which exhibits a complex dissolution mode. U-rich uranothorite dissolves more readily than Th-rich. Monazite is soluble in HJ)04 and HCI solutions only at temperatures exceeding 85°C. Consequently, it is deduced that the 15% to 20% of thorium not leached from the ore is lost both as monazite and as uranothorite inclusions locked in monazite which persists to the tailings. INTRODUCTIONThe importance of precise information on the mineralogy of ore and gangue constituents for the optimization of metal recovery in hydrometa Uurgical processing has been recognized for some years (e.g. Burkin, 1969), and numerous investigations integrating mineralogical studies and experimental leaching have been reported for ores of gold, nickel, copper and uranium (see summary by Henley, 1983). The complex mineralogy of uranium ores hosted by Precambrian pyritiferous, quartz-pebble, conglomerates has prompted particular attention in this regard (e.g. Liebenberg, 1956; Liebenberg and Taverner, 1958; Feather and Snegg, 1978). In the great majority of documented studies, however, petrographic examination has been followed by bulk leaching, an approach which, although providing valuable information, does not permit precise definition of the evolution of mineral dissolution processes. The authors contend that experimentation involving the step-by-step leaching and mineralogical study of ores is more likely to reveal the actual dissolution events which control the release of metals and, hence, may better define the optimal conditions for hydrometallurgical processing. Such studies (e.g. Hausen, 1983; Horlick et al., 1981) in addition lend themselves to the prediction of changes in the leaching behaviour of ores in which one or more mineralogical feature is subject to modification, a common characteristic of mineral deposits."

"A planned production increase of 1.25 million tonnes per year at Domtar's salt mine in Goderich, Ontario required an increase in the underground mine ventilation system from 320,000 to 700,000 scfm, The design of the expanded facility included the addition of a 22-foot-diameter shaft to augment the existing production and service shafts.A preliminary review of the ventilation requirement s indicated that in order to pr ovide good economic design for the expanded system, a comprehensive ventilation survey of the existing system was required. The survey was completed in the latter part of 1980, and subsequent engineering design and equipment selection proceeded throughout 1981.This paper presents the methods used to carry out the survey. Particular attention is given to the numerous challenges presented in determining air flows in the large 45-ftwide by 43-ft-high airways. Emphasis is placed on practical field survey techniques.A mathematical model of the ventilation system using a computer program is described, and the application of this program to provide design data and assist in equipment selection is discussed. Economic sizing of airways and fan selection are analyzed considering horsepower and operating costs.IntroductionThe Goderich Mine of Sifto Salt Division, Domtar Inc., is located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron in the town of Goderich, Ontario, and has been operating since November 1959. "Abstract - Oxide-facies banded iron formation in the Third Portage Lake area is hosted by ultramafic and calc-alkaline volcanic rocks and related sedimentary rocks of the Archean (2.8 Ga) Woodburn Lake Group, 80 km north of Baker Lake. These rocks record at least two phases of metamorphism/ metasomatism. Greenschist facies metamorphism, in the temperature range of 370°C to 520°C and at pressures above 2.3 kbar, has affected all rocks on a regional scale. Later mineralization and alteration of banded iron formation (BIF) and associated volcanic rocks resulted from metasomatic fluids which carried Mg, K, Ca, S, As, Cu and Au. These fluids were confined to ductile to brittle, cross-cutting and layer-parallel micro-shears developed in the thickened hinge region of a shallow plunging recumbent fold. Metasomatic reactions yielded cummingtonite + biotite-bearing assemblages which are associated with strongly mineralized iron formation. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide phase and occurs within ductily deformed iron formation where it pervasively replaces magnetite. Minor fine-grained chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite generally occur as inclusions within pyrrhotite and recrystallized magnetite, and rarely as individual grains. Pyrite is restricted to brittlely deformed iron formation, and to the contact between iron formation and altered ultramafic rocks, where it is associated with quartz veins. Pyrite typically replaces pyrrhotite. Native gold is associated with both pyrrhotite and pyrite, but higher gold concentrations are associated with pyrite. Grunerite/Ca-amphibole + stilpnomelane and sparse pyrrhotite and pyrite characterize weakly mineralized iron formation. Within adjacent ultramafic rocks, metasomatic reactions yielded assemblages of interlayered Ca-amphibole + biotite, and talc + Ca-amphibole + carbonate + biotite. K-Ar geochronology on metasomatic biotite from mineralized BIF yielded a 1791 ± 32 Ma age.An epigenetic model is favored for the emplacement of gold. The age of the gold mineralization in the Third Portage Lake area is uncertain, but may be Proterozoic based on the preliminary isotopic age and by analogy with Proterozoic gold deposits elsewhere in this part of the Churchill Structural Province."

The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. The rapid expansion of exploration drilling with anticipated production facilities for oil and gas in the Mackenzie Delta region of the Northwest Territories has created a demand for granular construction materials. This paper discusses the technique adopted and experience gained by the authors from several major resource evaluation programs in this remote area. The first part of the paper describes a methodology for deposit identification, logistics of helicopter and ground-based drilling operations and the sampling difficulties which are unique to permafrost: soils. The second part describes the exploitation of a large glaciofluvial deposit at YaYa Lake on Richards Island. Granular construction material is sparse in the delta region relative to projected demand. Exploitable sources of granular materials for aggregates or construction borrow are found in glaciofluvial deposits of Pleistocene age or in outcrops of Paleozoic bedrock. Glaciofluvial landforms can be located by reference to published surficial geology maps coupled with airphoto interpretation. Preliminary assessment of these features in a large region is most economically carried out during the summer months with a drill that is transportable by helicopter. Once prospective borrow pit sites are identified, a detailed ground-based winter drilling program must be undertaken to establish aggregate quality and quantity, and to provide information on natural features which could affect development. The glaciofluvial terrain has been highly modified by the formation of massive ground ice within the gravel deposits. This presents some unique pit development problems which are not encountered in a normal bedrock quarry operation.

"Fractures with diverse features dominate the hydraulic behavior of fractured rocks and are one of the major subjects for hydrogeological characterization of a site. This study investigates curve patterns obtained by packed tests, and as well the influence of fracture features based on 59 sets of in situ packer tests with different fracture combinations and fracture features. The result shows that, in the example of Heshe site, neat and tidy fractures usually provide stable channel for water flow during testing, and the hydraulic properties of fractures infilled with breccia and mud may change during testing because of leaching and/or washed out of infilling breccia and mud. Different combinations of fractures with diverse features in packed test sections lead to different curve patterns for in situ hydrogeological tests. For groundwater flowing predominately through neat and tidy fractures, the pressure-discharge curve of modified Lugeon tests are usually linear curve pattern, and the pressure decrease while the discharge increase in pressure-discharge-time curves of single-hole double packer tests, which benefit statistically determining the transmissivity of dominant fracture sets. INTRODUCTIONFractures interlaced in rock masses are major channels for groundwater flow and generally account for the anisotropic and heterogeneous characteristics of permeability for fracture rocks. To describe reasonably the permeability of a fracture rock, the Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) approach and others with similar ideals have been developed. Many methodologies and associate equipment, for instance, the televiewer and the in situ hydrogeological test, have been proposed to investigate the spatial distribution and the transmissivity for different fracture sets, which are two main parameters necessary for the DFN or similar model simulation (Pearson & Money, 1977; Barker & Black, 1983; Hsieh et al., 1985; Bernard et al., 2006; Quinn et al., 2012). However, diverse outlooks for the pressure-discharge curves and the temporal pressure and associate temporal discharge curves often confuse the investigation results by significant deviations on derived permeability (Houlsby, 1976; Zlotnik, 1994; Royle, 2009; Camilo, 2010).Aiming on technical development for in situ hydrogeological tests and fracture investigation, an experimental well site with 10 wells has been established in Heshe in central Taiwan since 2011 (Wang et al., 2011; Song, 2012; Zhan et al., 2013). Extensive geological survey and well-hole scanning by a televiewer provide spatial distributions and outlooks of fractures in detail. Additionally, a series of Lugeon tests, double packer injection tests and pumping tests have been performed to investigate the permeability of fracture rocks, and dominate fracture sets as well. Based on the results obtained from the Heshe site, this study classifies the curve patterns of hydraulic packer tests. The features of fractures involved in packed sections for packer tests are then inspected in detail. Relationship between the curve patterns of hydraulic packer tests and associated features of corresponding fractures in rock are discussed and addressed accordingly."

The JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) is a newly developed impact breakage testing device for rapid ore breakage characterisation, and has recently been commercialised after a three year comprehensive validation study, involving five major mining companies and six industrialised JKRBT units deployed worldwide. Comparisons of breakage mechanisms and characterisation data between the JKRBT and the Drop Weight Tester (DWT) indicate that, despite the differences in the breakage modes, the JKRBT can provide statistically similar A*b parameters, by using a data reduction procedure which takes into account the difference in the number of contact points, strain rate and potential for secondary breakage. Feedback from the validation sponsors has indicated higher productivity and better repeatability of the JKRBT compared with the DWT. This better precision, combined with the JKRBT?s wider particle size capability and wider specific energy range, provide a more powerful tool, ideally suited to rapid mapping of ore hardness in geometallurgical and comminution applications.

Introduction Tin continues to be as much a strategic metal as it was during the war. This situation is due to the fact that the tin mines in the major producing areas of Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies have not yet reached their pre-war production. Moreover, the world requirements for tin in certain fields, particularly in the food pack industries, are steadily increasing. At present, tin is still under International allocation by the Combined Tin Committee, of which Canada is a member nation. This Committee reviews periodically the availability of refined tin for export from the producing countries and makes allocations of tin to ensure equitable distribution to the consumer countries. In 1947, availability permitted an allocation of only 70 per cent of stated requirements. From 1935 to 1938 the price of tin in New York averaged 49 cents a pound and during the war the price in Canada was controlled under a subsidy programme at levels from 60 to 70 cents per pound. Just recently, this price has been raised to 96 cents. The value of the Canadian production amounts to about half a million dollars annually and the whole of this is obtained as a by-product of the lead-zinc-silver ores of the Sullivan mine in British Columbia. In 1947 Canada's imports of tin were 3,961 long tons valued at over $6,000,000. In addition, tin plate to a value of $8,000,000 was imported from the United States; the tin content of this is estimated to be from 650 to 700 long tons. An increase in domestic production would, therefore, be of great national importance, and the present high price may make the search for and development of tin deposits more attractive than it has been in the past. Although no one can foretell what future prices will be, there is reason to believe that, unless there is a drastic downward revision of production costs, the price will be maintained at present levels for some years. A number of tin occurrences are known in Canada, but none of these have been developed for their tin content alone.

The Flash Smelting process is the most used production method for primary copper in the world. The basic idea of the Flash Smelting is to utilize the thermal value of sulfidic concentrates and melt the reaction product, in controlled conditions, without a need for external energy. This basic principle is utilized both in matte smelting and in Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting Processes. In this paper, the behavior of normal (CuFeS2) concentrate of FSF-process is compared to the behavior of high grade feed material produced by Outokumpu Concentrate Upgrade Process with the aid of computational fluid dynamics (CPD) simulation using add-in subroutines developed by Outokumpu Technology. Results consist of the information concerning the behavior of the suspension, reaction efficiency and other parameters concerning the reactions of the feed material. It will be shown that, using the Upgrade Process, the throughput of copper from the Flash Furnace can be almost tripled.

Occupational epidemiology of the nickel-producing industry has found that inhalation exposures to certain nickel-containing substances are linked to respiratory cancers and to nonmalignant respiratory endpoints. Establishing such a linkage, however, is complicated by the fact that some diseases occur long after exposure to a causal agent (i.e., some diseases have long latencies). Furthermore, most chemical agents (especially nickel substances) vary significantly in their toxicological properties and their concentrations in workplace air have varied over processing history. Because of these complications, it is critical to understand historical exposures to specific nickel substances. To assist in this effort, the author focuses on the history of smelting and its related processes at Vale Canada’s (Inco’s) Ontario operations in the first half of the 20th century.

The aim of this work was to prepare the metallic coatings on 316L stainless steel dental implant and evaluate the corrosion characteristics and thus the biocompatibility of the uncoated and metallic coated dental implants and comparison of the effect of the type of coatings on biocompatibility. Three types of metallic coatings including Tantalum, Niobium, and Titanium coatings were made using physical vapor deposition process on 316L stainless steel dental implant. Structural characterization techniques including; X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis were utilized to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coatings. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions at 37±1 °C in order to determine and compare the corrosion characteristics. All three types of metallic coatings had a positive effect on improvement of the corrosion behavior so that the coatings could increase the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel and this trend was independent to the type of physiological environment. Biocompatible metallic coatings could decrease the corrosion current density that is a distinct advantage for prevention of ion release. This can improve the biocompatibility of the implant and, consequently prevention of tissue damages, inflammation and irritation and obtained desirable histopathological response.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is an emerging environmental management tool for examining environmental impacts from cradle to grave. In this paper, LCA is used to evaluate the acidification potential (AP) and global warming potential (GWP) of belt conveyors and truck haulage systems in a surface gold mine using the ISO 14040 standards. The results show that, for AP, the truck system has 32 kg of equivalent SO2 per functional unit, compared to 8 kg for the conveyor system. However, for GWP, the conveyor has 2,820 kg of equivalent CO2 per functional unit, compared to 648 kg for the truck option.

"In 1991/1992, INCO undertook a successful R&D program aimed at extending the lining lives of the top blown rotary converters (TBRCs)at its Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) and the electric furnace at INMETCO. At the laboratory scale, this effort was divided into three phases. In the first part, mineralogical work was performed on six refractories that were either currently being used to line these vessels or were considered suitable alternatives. In the second part, this mineralogical knowledge was used to help determine the compositions of slags that would not corrode the bricks at the operating temperature (1600°C) of the above furnaces. Finally, several important properties of the six refractories were measured to complete their evaluation as candidate linings. This paper reports the results of all three phases of the laboratory scale R&D work.The mineralogical work showed that rebonded fused grain magnesite-chrome (RFG-MC) bricks consist principally of periclase with minor amounts of free chromite and trace quantities of silicates monticellite and sometimes olivine. The bricks are principally held together by periclase-periclase direct bonding. Of note, the bulk of the chromite exists as exsolved precipitated blebs within the periclase grains. These likely redissolve at high temperature.Slags on the periclase liquidus coexist stably with these refractories. Examples are presented using CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags at~1600°C.Finally, the two refractories manufactured using close to 100% fused grain material generally outperformed the others in terms of physical properties and certainly were superior in their resistance to slag penetration damage."

Equilibrium calculational software programs can be effectively utilized to model important parameters in aqueous and aqueous/solid systems, e.g., activity or concentration, solubility, temperature, solution pH, solution potential, and ligand complexation. In this regard, the calculational program ST ABCAL will be demonstrated. Illustrative examples for the creation of diagrams such as potential-pH, and activity or concentration-pH will be presented to demonstrate the fundamentals in real hydrometallurgical systems. Speciation, titration and mixing will be used to simulate or predict operational processes. Berkeley Pit water from a flooded abandoned copper open-pit mine will be used to illustrate the modeling process. According to analytical results the water contains about 20 important constituents. In addition to measured potential and dissolved oxygen, there are two distinctive oxidation/reduction couples. Concentration and other experimental parameters are seldom matched to each other and 12 different conditions have been identified. Water for each condition must be speciated in order to find the best-fit model. The STABCAL program will be used for the modeling calculations and the implication of the water chemistry to defining treatment opportunities will be discussed.
