In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.

Pan Australian Mining lid installed a milling and gold leaching plant designed to process 2 million tonnes per annum of breccia sulphide ore. This plant was commissioned in January 1989. Since commissioning, increased ore reserves have been established and the plant has been expanded by the addition of one ball mill and several tanks to increase the design capacity to 3 million tonnes per annum. This additional plant was commissioned in May 1990, bringing the total number of mills up to three, each 4.5 m diameter x 7 m long. The paper details how milling rates have been increased at the expense of grind size to increase the capacity of the original plant from 2 million to 3.1 million tonne per year rate before the additional ball mill was Commissioned.

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

The rate of precipitation of ferric iron as ammonium jarosite, NH4.Fe3(SO4)2(0H)6 from acidic solutions near 100¦C, was found to increase with weight of jarosite seed crystals, and with concentration of ammonium ion, but to decrease with increasing acidity. The particle size of the product crystals was larger at low sulphate concentrations and at high ammonium concentrations. Three cross sections, 200 m apart, display the distribution of indicator hydrothermal minerals across the Empire zone of the Golden Cross epithermal Au-Ag deposit, Waihi, New Zealand. These minerals are used to interpret the temperature and composition of hydrothermal fluids. The distribution of interstratified illite-montmorillonite and illite indicate that temperatures ranged from 140 to >220¦C, with temperatures above 220¦C predominating. The mineral assemblage of quartz-adularia-chlorite-illite-calcite-pyrite envelops the Empire vein system and stockwork, and reflects formation from an alkali chloride water, whereas the mineral assemblage of replacement calcite-interstratified illite - montmorillonite- kaolinite forms a carapace and reflects formation from a C02-rich steam-heated water. Alkali chloride waters appear responsible for the epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

A laminar-flow furnace was used to study the combustion of four flotation concentrates (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) in air at temperatures up to 1400¦C. A special- Iv developed two-colour pyrometer was used to measure the temperature of individual chalco- pvrite and pyrite particles as they underwent combustion. Chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited with very high rates of reaction at air tempera- tures above 480 and 600¦C respectively, forming molten products. Galena and sphalerite required temperatures in excess of 700 and 1200¦ respect- ively to attain equivalent rates of reaction. The high rates of reaction for galena and spha- lerite were caused by vaporization. The kinetics of desorption of nitrogen from molten iron were investigated using the electromagnetic levitation technique. The respective influences of gas flow rate and surface active element (S) were examined. A second order behaviour with respect to the nitrogen concentration in the melt prevailed at all experimental conditions. Sulphur had a marked inhibiting effect on the desorption rate. The experimental results on the rates of nitrogen desorption have been interpreted with the aid of a reaction mechanism consisting of a sequence of elementary steps.

An increase in pig iron output by 50 per cent was aimed at after re-lining No.2 blast furnace of NAKAYAMA STEEL WORKS. This had to be achieved by increasing both the furnace volume (from 673 to 757 m3) and its productivity, Without equipment for high top pressure operation, high productivity was mainly attained by the following three measures; (1) improving the gas flow characteristics by maintaining a high ratio of agglomerated ores, increasing the strength of sinter and coke, and optimizing the charge distribution, (2) decreasing the fuel ratio by low Si operation and the use of hot blast, and (3) oxygen enrichment. In addition, the tapping controls for pig iron and slag were intensified. As a result of the above measures an excellent hot metal output of 2.7 tonne/m3/day was attained in April 1979 (monthly average).

Grinding has been one of the areas of major development at Outokumpu's concentrators. During its early years the company used entirely rod and hall mills, but due to the high costs of metallic grinding it began the testing of autogenous grinding as early as the 1950s. In the late-1970s, the company's own modification for two stage autogenous grinding was ready for industrial use. Surprisingly late, in the 80s - 90s, an interest rose to check also the effects of grinding methods on flotation results. This paper firstly gives a short history of the development work of Outokumpu type autogenous grinding, called 'Outogenius'. The effects of some grinding methods on the process results of two nickel ores are then reviewed. The tests to date show notable effects of grinding methods on flotation.

The dry processing of mineral sands concentrates can result in the generation of significant amounts of airborne dust. The radioactive component of this dust has implications within the context of work environment health codes. The last four years have seen considerable investment in dry plant equipment enclosure and dust extraction systems, with resultant reductions in plant ambient dust levels. Simultaneously, an industry wide program was started to examine the origin, nature, mineralogy and radioactivity of the airborne dust. The major findings of this study have been: ò confirmation that monazite was the only significant source of dust radioactivity. ò recognition of two sources of dust: - agglomerates of finely divided ilmenite-rutile alteration products, which are formed by the removal of surface coatings and particles. - abraded mineral fragments, which reflect the mineralogy of the parent particles.

Two suites of dusts (waste-heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) collected in 1976 and 1980 from the Kalgoorlie nickel smelter were subjected to chemical and XRD analysis and were examined by SEM and optical microscopy. The spherical to sub-spherical particles contained oxide and glassy phases with small amounts of sulfide. XRD showed that the major phase was a mixed Ni-Fe oxide spinel with some hematite. These phases compared well with those predicted by thermodynamics. The particle size distributions showed that in the 1976 and 1980 suites 20 per cent by weight was respectively coarser than 60 and 115/lm (boiler dusts) and 40 and 30/lm (precipitator dusts). Maximum particle sizes estimated from sedimentation chamber theory were found to be in reasonable agreement with the maximum sizes found in the dusts.

In China the hydrogeological type of solid mineral deposits can be divided into A. Mineral deposits with fissure water; B. Mineral deposits with pore water; and C. Mineral deposits with karst water. The hydrogeological conditions of mineral deposits with fissure water are relatively simple with the exception of a few cases. Mineral deposits with pore water are few but great amounts of ground water can be encountered in the mine accompanied by floating sand or slope failure during the exploitation. Mineral deposits with karst water are complex in their hydrogeological conditions. Enormous inrushes occur frequently in the mines of north China; Karst collapses are a serious matter in the mines of the south; Subterranean river and conduit systems are often encountered in the southwest. This paper will give full discussion on these features and put forward a way of combating and controlling the groundwater problem in accordance with type and feature.

Bureau of Medical Inspection, Broken Hill, New South Wales.INTRODUCTIONFor a considerable time it has be3n realised that the pathological changes produced in human lungs by the inhalation of free silica varied, not only according to the amount of silica inhaled, its particle size and the period during which it was inhaled, but also according to other mineral elements which might be admixed with the fine silica dust and inhaled along with it, or inhaled subsequently to the silica containing dust. It was observed that, in many instances, these admixed dusts tended to inhibit the action of the free silica in causing injury to the lungs, as well as the development of certain complications, whilst in other cases it was felt that certain substances could actually accelerate the tissue damage caused by the silica.A fresh impetus to the problem of the prevention of the development of silicosis was given when, in 1937 and 1939, Denny, Robson and Irwin published papers entitled "The Prevention of Silicosis by Metallic Aluminum." Working at the same time at the Saranac La.boratory, and quite independently, and using a colloidal aluminum hydroxide, Gardner arrived at the same conclusions as Denny, Robson and Irwin, namely, that in experimental animals the development of silicotic changes could be prevented if eithertogether with the silica, or subsequent to its inhalation...

In order to meet these demands now and in the future, it will be necessary to review work practises, and restructure production and quality systems to incorporate the latest principles and philosophies.
