In November, 1967, a four strand curved mould continuous casting machine coupled with a 50 ton basic oxygen furnace began producing billets for the rod mill and new merchant mill at the Newcastle Steelworks. To date over 500,000 tons of carbon and alloy steels have been cast at the rate of 20,000 tons per month, the major part for the wire industry. Many alterations have been made to the plant to simplify the process, improve quality and increase production. Casting parameters have been developed for each different type of steel. The quality of the final product has been influenced most by casting temperature, secondary cooling and casting speed. All these factors have been controlled and good results are reproduced. More exacting requirements of liquid steel quality have brought about the use of higher lime/silica ratio slags during steelmaking to control phosphorus revers- ions and standard ladle additions of manganese suicide and ferro aluminium for more effective deoxidation.

Laboratory investigations have been carried out on direct leaching of lead-zinc complex sulphide ore and zinc concentrate using ferric chloride. From the investigation it was observed that the use of 0.15 M and 2 M FeC13 gave an optimum dissolution of metal ions from ore and concentrate respectively. The kinetic studies conducted showed that the leaching reaction followed a shrinking core model for galena and sphalerite. The presence of impurities such as pyrite had increased the dissolution rate and reduced the consumption of ferric chloride. Further, the studies were conducted to recover dissolved zinc from the chloride solution by selectively precipitating it as zinc ammonium chloride.

Current problems in predicting sub-surface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining have highlighted the need for more accurate, dependable methods of physical modelling of rock mechanics problems which are beyond the capabilities of current mathematical techniques. Physical model studies of the caved zone above the working faces up to the base of a water source are of importance in attempting to understand changes in mass permeability due to induced fracture zones and the resulting ground water conditions. Turkey's most important supplies of coking coals are to be found within the hard coal resources of the Black Sea coast. Coal seams up to 9 metres thick, dipping at angles as steep as 90 degrees are being successfully mined at the Kozlu Mine. Since 1956, mining operations have been carried out under the sea in dry conditions. The undersea mining conditions of the Kozlu Mine have been investigated using scaled physical models constructed from artificial materials which satisfied necessary scaling requirements. Models representing the in-situ conditions were tested and the following extraction sequence was employed: 1. The Sulu Seam extraction 2. The Acilik Seam extraction (as two slices) 3. The Piric Seam extraction. The displacement of the fixed reference points were subsequently measured using a high precision photogrammetric technique and induced horizontal and vertical strains were calculated.

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.

Ore mineralization in Masara consists mainly of gold-silver veins, porphyry copper and pyrometasomatic deposits related to left-lateral movements along the Philip- pine fault system and a later stage of magmatism. These are hosted by pre-Tertiary volcanic flows and volcaniclastics, and comprise a temporal pattern of earlier peripheral copper zone, an intermediate mixed copper-gold area and a later central gold vein system within the Masara sector of the postulated volcanic field. Gold ore emplacement occurred in at least two stages, and shows gradations from a lower mesothermal-epithermal phase passing into a typical epithermal zone, and finally into a truncated, or poorly developed, upper level thermal spring deposit. Orebodies are closely associated with hot springs, solfatara and several magma- related masses, emphasizing their inherent linkage with a geothermal system in the Area.

Increasing demands on quality of metallurgical grade alumina and for lower production costs led to the development of a new fluid bed calcining process. The process, jointly developed in Germany by Vereinigte Aluminium Werke A.G. and Lurgi Gesellschaften m.b.H., takes advantage of modern chemical engineering methods such as counter-current flow of combustion air and solids, direct heat-exchange between combustion air and fine solids and near stoichiometric combustion of oil in a fluid bed. Using a two-stage Venturi-type suspension preheater for heat-recovery from combustion flue- gases, the circulating fluid bed technique with internal oil combustion at 2.2000 F for the calcining step and 'a five-stage fluidized bed cooler for heat recovery from calcines, the process gives an outstanding heat- efficiency. In a first industrial plant for 560 sh. t. alumina per day heat consumption figures of less than 1.400 BTU/lb A12O3 were achieved.

Poor ground conditions associated with historical workings have presented significant challenges to the drilling of production downholes at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. The combination of foam and polymer drilling, the use of Aquacrete to drill through voids and the practice of lining completed holes has allowed downholes to be effectively drilled and blasted in delaminated ground.

In the first five years of longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, special techniques of goaf sealing, gas drainage, goaf edge ventilation and goaf sampling were developed and used to o crcome the concurrent problems of spontaneous combustion and high methane emissions. The English-inspired back-return face ventilation system was modified to suit Australian mining methods and was first used as part of a 'Y' ventilation system and more recently was used with a 'U' system of ventilation. In conjunction with this ventilation system, the maintenance of a sealed goaf area was an essential element in the control of the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

Multiple operating points for mine fans are a problem that fan and mining engineers must constantly be aware of in mine/fan systems. In a single-fan system, unstable conditions can be avoided by restricting fan operation to the "normal operating range." When mine fans are operated in parallel, the situation becomes a little more complicated. Multiple operating points are more often encountered and the fan user must be aware of these multiple points to have a suitable set of operating conditions. However, for fans in parallel, the engineer can plot the combined characteristic in a relatively straightforward manner and thus can avoid conditions that would cause instability in the mine/fan system.

The Golden Valley Volcanic Centre has been recently interpreted as being a combination diatreme breccia pipe and rhyo-dacite flow dome complex of Permo-Carboniferous age that intrudes basement granitoids and sediments of Ordovician-Devonian age. Exceptionally good exposure at the Centre has enabled the relationships between different lithologies to be determined. This, along with petrological studies, has led to a detailed understanding of the geological environment in which the complex formed. Gold, silver and base metal mineralisation have been recently shown to be associated with the Marginal Breccia at the perimeter of the diatreme. Comparisons have been made between the geology and mineralisation in this system and several similar diatremes which also contain gold-base metal sulphide mineralisation.

The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

The Mesozoic intrusive rocks in southeastern coastal China can be divided into three intrusive suites, and they can be brought into corresponding with four cycles of volcanic activity. This paper describes their time-space relation with volcanic rocks, and their geochemical characteristics. Data from the Mesozoic volcanic-intrusive. complex rocks in Eastern Zheijiang, Eastern Fujiang and Eastern Guangdong show distinct regional differences, both within and tectonomagmatic activity regions. The southeastern coast of China involves four tectonomagmatic activity regions. They have many differences on the nature of magma source regions, activity patterns of magma, time-space distribution, petrography and petrographic facies association of volcanic and intrusive rock and mineralization.

The feed to the Cockle Creek Imperial Smelting Furnace consists of mixed Pb/Zn con- centrates and lead sulphate-containing elec- trolytic zinc plant residues. Roasting was investigated as a means of desulphurizing the feed to less than 1%. The Olympic Dam Mining Operation involves the supply of some 2.2 million tonnes per annum of ore feed for the metallurgical plant. To achieve this approximately 9 km of tunnels are developed per year to gain access to the long hole open stopes that supply the majority of the production tonnes.Vast amounts of data are produced in the mining activity from the geology, mine design, scheduling, surveying, shift reporting through to the statistical reporting and analysis of the performance of the mine activities. Care must be taken when obtaining the data to maximise the usefulness of the data to other users so not to impose constraints or additional processes on future users.

This paper primarily describes the application of geology to the different mining methods employed in a large underground mine. The steeply dipping stratiform Silver/Lead/Zinc mineralisation at Mount Isa include up to 28 mineable orebodies. The orebodiea are mined by cut and fill, sublevel benching and sublevel open stoping; the method chosen depending mainly on orebody geomechanics.The sources and methods of data collection, and the interpretation process undertaken, are described. The paper emphasises the different geological input required, by each individual mining method, to provide the necessary production and strata control. This input contributes significantly to the success and efficiency of the operations.

Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. Building a new tunnel to accommodate CN North America's needs or double stacked container traffic for the next 100 years represents new and unprecedented challenges. Innovative approaches to contracting, especially the Negotiated Compressed Process (NCP), TBM design, project management, and the regulatory and approval process, were all required to deliver a new tunnel to meet the needs of CN North America within the approved completion schedule of 33 months compared to a traditional approach of 45 to 48 months. The NCP resulted in trimming a full 12 months from the project schedule with an anticipated saving of direct and indirect costs.

Before the arrival of the first Europeans, Aborigines living in the northern Flinders Ranges mined ochre - an earthy form of haematite used for pigment.The discovery of copper ore at Kapunda and Burra in the 1840s stimulated the early settlers to prospect further north along the ranges. Grade control aims to deliver quality tonnes to the mill via accurate definition of ore and waste. It comprises data collection and interpretation; local reserve estimation; supervision of development and mining; and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of high quality sampling supported by geology. The requirement for quality grade control samples has long been recognised, where they should be representative, unbiased, safe and operationally timely. Underground sampling methods include chip and channel samples; grab samples; and drill-based samples. To achieve quality samples, collection techniques employed should minimise delimitation, extraction and preparation errors. Grade control staff should be well-trained and motivated, and mining staff should understand the need for grade control. This paper reviews grade control sampling methods and presents recommendations for best practice and minimisation of sampling errors.
