Exploration on the Callide Coalfield by Thiess Bros. Pty. Limited had reached the stage in mid 1976 where there was a need for a comprehensive appraisal of the coalfield geology. Exploration strategy in 1977 - 1978 was defined by the selection of the most attractive targets. All available literature, reports and plans were reviewed and borehole records assessed. The geology of the coalfield was placed in its regional setting and the genesis of the Callide Coal Measures described in a structural and sedimentological context. Their general form and extent was then examined by the technique of stratigraphic analysis through the interpolation and extrapolation of the available data. A "localized" reserve classification was drawn up and reasonable estimates of the various geological reserves produced, in terms of their reliability and depth of overburden. Quality trend maps were also produced. The resultant "base map" was virtually a summation of all the information to June, 1977, and the basis for the exploration programme in the 1977 - 1978 financial year. The technique allowed for "base maps" to be produced at almost any stage, each one a refinement of its Predecessor.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

The iron ore mining operations carried out by Goldsworthy Mining Limited at Golds- worthy, Shay Gap and Sunrise Hill, in the Pilbara region of the North-West of Western Australia, are unusual insofar as the ore reserves occur in a number of widely separated and relatively small deposits, requiring deep mining below the water table, and even below sea level at the Goldsworthy pit. This paper has been prepared to describe some of the problems associated with these deep open cut mines, and the technology employed to overcome them, in order to provide an efficient and economical operation. The problems discussed are: 1. Development of the Dewatering System for the Goldsworthy Mine. 2. The Stability of Pit Slopes at the Goldsworthy and Shay Gap Mines. 3. Development of Diesel Electric Trucks for Lonq Uphill Hauls.

The nickel ores mined in New Caledonia for one century are mainly silicate ores. These ores are nickel enriched saprolites, formed by partial weathering of peridotites (predominantly harzburgites and some dunites), serpentinised to varying degrees. Saprolites constitute the lower horizon of lateritic soils, sometimes up to 100 metres thick, developed on peneplains now greatly modified by erosion. Saprolites are generally overlain by laterites, a more weathered horizon, where the main components are iron oxy-hydroxides with a low nickel grade. The structure of saprolites depends essentially on the serpentine content of peridotites and, on the other hand, serpentine minerals may have a high nickel content and, so, represent important nickel bearing minerals in silicate ores. Two types of serpentines can be found in nickel ores from New Caledonia: ò primary serpentines, formed by hydration of olivine at temperatures below 400¦C, during overthrusting of peridotites in late-Eocene (Paris, Andreieff and Coudray, 1979), are generally very abundant; ò secondary nickeliferous serpentines, associated with other sheet silicates in garnierites, are now relatively scarce but garnierites were selectively mined one century ago, because of their high nickel grade.

Geophysical signatures of the Taranaki and Tongariro volcanoes reflect similarities in their age, composition and hydrothermal histories, but also reflect differences in host rock settings and edifice evolution. The Taranaki volcanoes have strong positive gravity anomalies showing that their edifices largely consist of dense andesite which reflects substantial lava production or dyke injection during construction and that large sub-edifice dykelstock complexes occur. In contrast, the Tongariro volcanoes have strong negative gravity anomalies indicating low density edifices of volcaniclastic material; no sub-edifice intrusions can be identified, probably because of the lack of density contrast with host basement rocks. Strong positive magnetic anomalies over the younger cones can mainly be attributed to near-surface andesite lavas or dykes whereas subdued magnetic effects are associated with hydrothermally altered zones within both edifices and sub-edifice intrusions.

Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. In 1972, with the West Lyell Open Pit winding down, mining operations transferred underground. All development tunnelling until the end of the decade was carried out by a fleet of ten pneumatic Jumbos.A decision was made in 1980 to purchase an electric-hydraulic Jumbo and a second was purchased in 1982. Their introduction changed the face of development at Mount Lyell. Significant new demands were placed on main-tenance sections, particularly on electrical reticulation.Subsequently, two further electric-hydraulic Jumbos were purchased from Agnew Mining in 1984, and successfully overhauled and commissioned. As well, two electric-nydraulic production drilling rigs have been purchased. Only one of the original pneumatic Jumbos remains in service.

Four historical periods of Australian lead-zinc-silver exploration and development are identified.In the first period, 1841-1900, Australia's deeply weathered surface yielded bonanza deposits. The outcrops of easily worked secondary ores, enriched in silver and lead, were discovered by prospectors with the incentive of production at times of high silver price. Districts discovered in this period still contributed, in 1982, 60 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production, mainly from Broken Hill.The second period 1901-1944, was one of strong mine development but stagnant lead-zinc-silver exploration. Mount Isa was discovered and developed, but otherwise effort was devoted mainly to the mining of deposit extensions and to the metallurgical flotation of zinc. The deposit discovery rate was low but the discovery of Mount Isa was so significant that discoveries of this period contributed, in 1982, 30 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.The third period 1945-1972 was one of re-invigorated exploration.New geological and geophysical surveys, developing concepts of ore genesis, and worldwide comparisons of orebody settings improved target area selection. Evolving remote sensing methods, and rapid analytical techniques, assisted detection of lead-zinc deposits. Initiation of exploration led to discovery:1. in regions of previously unsuspected lead-zinc-silver potential (Sorby Hills, Mons Cupri, Golden Grove).2. of poorly exposed deposits in recognized mineral districts (Hilton, H.Y.C., Woodlawn, Elura, Que River).3. during active exploration for another commodity (Brown's, Woodcutters, Mary River, Beltana, Lady Loretla and Pegmont).The period saw a sustained growth in lead-zinc-silver production mainly from established operations. Mines discovered during the third period contributed, in 1982, 7 per cent of Australia's lead-zinc production.In the fourth period from 1973 to the present, exploration initiatives became fewer but resulted in continued discovery of poorly exposed deposits at Teutonic Bore, Thalanga, Benambra, Scuddles, Hellyer, and Jillawarra. Development initiatives strengthened in the period and production commenced at Woodlawn, Teutonic Bore, Que River and Elura; pre-feasibility work commenced at Scuddles, Hilton, Lady Loretta and Thalanga.

Concentrates produced from MnO2 and Fe203 ore fines have been targeted as potential feedstocks for direct metallurgical processing. Prereduction of pyrolusite-rich Mn02 sands to MnO has been investigated in batch and continuous experimental bubbling fluidised beds using CO-H2 reducing gas mixtures. This process has been found to produce a high grade feedstock suitable for smelting to ferroalloys or acid digestion for chemicals production. Similarly, production of highly metallised direct reduced iron (DRI) from hematite ore fines has also been investigated in batch bubbling bed reactors. Programs to characterise the reduction kinetics, fluidisation behaviour and defluidisation phenomena for both feedstocks are currently in progress to enable optimum process conditions to be determined.

Sampling and analysis of mineral deposits need to be executed without fear or favour of financial or personal impacts. Examples are given to illustrate the effects of departures, witting and unwitting, from correct use of appropriate techniques and/or equipment with emphasis on exploration and mining of porphyry copper deposits of the Pacific Rim. Some of the results of errors on the low and high sides of true value in exploration, resource or reserve estimations and in production caused by sampling and/or sample preparation mistakes, faulty practices, equipment and/or analysis are considered.

Technological developments in modem Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and associated back-up equipment are offering significant alternatives for mining operators to consider, in the selection of equipment for coal mine development drifts, roadways, longwall gate roads as well as metalliferous mining declines and development drives.Greater flexibility in handling variable ground conditions, muck disposal and radius of turn as well as advance rates, are just some of the areas where modem TBMs can accomplish the flexibility that mine operators require to achieve cost-effective developments.Compact TBMs are achieving this acceptance because of the fundamental design of a shielded machine containing electrics and hydraulics within the forward shell, ability to achieve tight radius of curvature and grades, and ability to provide highly flexible support systems to meet all possible ground conditions.However, a single TBM design will not suit all mine developments, as each development method - while having common goals with all mine developments - will also require certain unique criteria to be fulfilled.

The causes of the loss of heavy mineral from mineral sands wet concentrators were identified through detailed surveys of two such concentrators. It was found that tray and spiral sluices preferentially lost elongated panicles, but panicle size had little effect on loss. Recovery was shown to increase with panicle density. The major influences on the recovery efficiency of individual concentrating devices (stans) were feed rate and feed grade, recovery increasing with decreased feed rate and with increased grade. Uneven distribution of total solids and heavy mineral to individual stans contributed to losses through the corresponding effects in feed tonnage and grade. Computer simulation demonstrated that significant recovery improvements could be obtained by appropriate adjustment of splitters to optimise the characteristics of internal plant flows.

The effect of various types of solid carbonaceOlls reductants on the rate of fuming of zinc from lead blast furnace slag was investigated at I250°C.The results of the laboratory experiments indicated that the rate of removal of zinc from slag depended primarily on the volatile matter contents of the reduclants. A dynamic simulator for CIP / CIL gold recovery plants has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre within a collaborative, industrially - funded AMIRA project and with the participation of the Western Australian School of Mines. The simulator incorporates kinetic models for the leaching of gold from ore and its adsorption onto activated carbon, and the residence time distributions of the leach liquor, pulp solids and carbon in the circuit. Features of the simulator include the effects of gold loading distributions on both the ore and carbon on reaction rates, and the difference in residence time distribution between the leach liquor and pulp solids. The simulator allows for the estimation of kinetic model parameters from full scale applications, as well as some scale - up of parameters from laboratory batch tests. The laboratory tests were conducted at the WASM as part of the collaborative research project. The simulator can operate in both steady - state and dynamic modes, and has potential applications in design, optimisation and control of CIP / CIL plants.

The large, high grade 3000 and 3500 copper orebodies at Mount Isa lie greater than 1200 m below the surface, and partly beneath the silver-lead-zinc mining operations at the Isa Mine.Since discovery over 30 years ago, the primary data acquisition programs have been integrated with long-term copper production strategies. These potentially sizeable and distinctly separate accumulations of copper mineralisation are the only sources capable of supplementing a decline in output from the 1100 orebody in the 1990s. Within a decade these deeper copper orebodies will become the major source of copper ore.

An industry initiated project, sponsored by the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Council, has worked for two years in developing design guidelines for underground coal mining machinery.Continuous miners and shuttle cars were selected for the initial development of design guidelines as these machines were linked with 7500 lost workdays and 490 reported injuries during the preceding two years.
