Gold/silver orebodies of the Golden Plateau deposit, Cracow, Central Queensland, are currently being exploited by the Cracow Mining Venture. A geostatistical block model has been prepared to assist with long term mine planning. The Golden Plateau orebody, of inferred epithermal origin, is a multiply brecciated, silicified fault complex containing irregular, tabular and pipe- like oreshoots. Historically the lode has been stoped and open cut over a strike length of 750 metres at widths of up to 15 metres and to a depth of 250 metres. The Golden Plateau mine produced 1.55 million tonnes of ore at an average grade of 12 g/t Au and 13.5 g/t Ag over a 42 year period. In the preparation of the reserve model much reliance has been placed on recent diamond and reverse circulation drilling (71 holes in total). However a significant volume of data has been derived from historical level assays and underground diamond drilling. Over 3,000 level assays and 50 underground drill holes contributed to the database. Similar lognormal populations were observed for 1 metre composite grades from each major drilling campaign once corrections were made for core loss. Cumulative frequency plots revealed only one outlier which was cut to the population line. The population statistics from the historical level assays showed a significant difference from those derived from the drill hole composites. Level assay populations were cut to local drill hole populations before incorporation into the ore reserve model. The resulting data has yielded interpretable variograms, the parameters of which have been applied to the preparation of a kriged block model of the deposit.

Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team. Caving is the lowest cost underground mining method, provided that drawpoint spacing, drawpoint size and ore handling facilities are designed to suit the caved material and that the drawpoint horizon can be maintained for the draw life. In the near future several open pit mines that produce in excess of 50 000 tons per day will have to examine the feasibility of converting to low cost, large scale underground operations. Several other large scale, low grade underground operations will experience major changes in their mining environments as large dropdowns are implemented. These changes demand a more realistic approach to mine planning than has occurred in the past, where existing operations have been projected to increased depths with little consideration of the change in mining environment that will occur. As economics force the consideration of underground mining of large, competent orebodies by low cost methods, the role of cave mining will have to be defined. In the past caving has generally been considered for rock masses that cave and fragment readily. The ability to define cavability and fragmentation, the availability of large, robust LHDs, a better understanding of draw control requirements, improved drilling equipment for secondary blasting and reliable cost data have shown that competent orebodies with coarse fragmentation can be exploited by cave mining at a much lower cost than with drill and blast Methods.

It is commonly known that copper smelter terms include penalties if the concentrations of elements, such as arsenic, mercury and fluorine, exceed stipulated limits. It is less commonly known that the behaviour of these elements in the smelters can depend on the processes used to treat the concentrate. The principle behind the penalties is to compensate the smelters and refineries for additional costs caused by the presence of the penalty elements, but these costs will vary depending on the process used and the location of the smelter.The issues caused by the minor elements include effects on the occupational health of smelter workers, increased environmental disposal costs, increased operating costs and reduced cathode copper quality.The effects of minor elements can be surprising. High levels of arsenic in concentrate are considered undesirable, but some smelters add arsenic to anode copper to improve the performance of the refinery.Excess concentrations of some elements will result in rejection of concentrates by smelters. China has blanket import bans on copper concentrates with concentrations of lead, arsenic cadmium, fluorine and mercury exceeding specified levels.This paper will review the behaviour of minor elements in smelters and refineries, explaining the deleterious effects of each of them, to provide a greater understanding for people and organisations wishing to market copper concentrates.CITATION:Fountain, C, 2013. Production scheduling is often reliant on an estimation of a mineÆs trucking capacity. While this mechanistic approach is relatively simple, it often over-estimates actual throughput resulting in under-utilisation of downstream process and a shortfall in revenue. An alternate approach has been developed that recognises the interdependency between processes in the mine production system including materials loading, haulage and crushing. This approach incorporates a heuristic model based on queuing theory that accounts for the variability in performance of individual processes and that this paper presents the results of a study comparing the conventional approach to mine scheduling with a capacity constrained model at a large open cut mine having a truck and shovel fleet. The capacity constrained model consistently predicted a lower material throughput compared to the conventional approach. Differences in throughput between the two approaches were found to increase with loading time, for example when loading time exceeded 3.9 minutes there was a shortfall of up to 40 per cent in estimated throughput. Longer travel times tended to ameliorate any differences. When applied to a mine schedule that extended over a two and a half year period, the difference was equivalent to a shortfall of nearly eight per cent in total material movement.

Australian mining companies are actively exploring for and developing mineral deposits throughout the world with interests in emerging markets such as Africa, Asia and South America. It is important to understand emerging market risk as this will affect the willingness of mining companies and financial institutions to invest in a country, especially with reference to their key asset, the mining licence or operating/concession agreement. Mining companies looking to develop new projects in emerging markets have different risk profiles than projects in countries such as Australia and Canada. Examples of key risks faced in emerging markets include: political û expropriation, nationalisation, contract frustration, currency inconvertibility, war, terrorism, strikes, riots and civil commotion; and legal û mining legislation, arbitration and dispute resolution, trade agreements. There is a problem in the difference in risk perceptions between mining companies, financial institutions and insurers. This can cause different stakeholders to carry out different evaluations of the risks faced by a project, resulting in confusion about the risk margin attached to any project. In a time where resource nationalisation and energy security are prompting governments to become more involved in the mining sector we run through some recent examples of mining companies that have had problems due to the key risks highlighted earlier. Importance of carrying out the right due diligence to replace perceptions with reality: early identification of risks û detailed due diligence on emerging market risks that may arise will help with their identification and mitigation, make use of companies that can help identify risks and suggest solutions, control the cost of financing û risk margin applied to a project finance loan will be influenced by the risks faced, and risk management and using political risk insurance. There are plenty of opportunities in emerging markets but it is important to recognise the associated risks. Detailed due diligence at an early stage will provide long-term benefits.

Bulk mining and handling technologies have been affected in two ways by the soaring costs of oil products in recent years. Firstly, the substition of oil by coal, oil sands and oil shale demands the development of high-capacity mining and handling equipment, and secondly the rising fuel costs favour a trend away from cost-intensive heavy truck transport. To cope with the growing volumes of material in mining and handling, larger equip- ment units have to be designed. This tendency becomes apparent from the examples of the Hambach open pit mine in Germany, and the Port Kembla handling plant in Australia. A combination of the flexibility of heavy truck transport and the cost advantages of belt conveyors is achieved by the system of semi-mobile crushing installations described in this paper.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northern Paparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

The minerals industry has been given an opportunity to grow and continue to advance again in an environment where there is the potential to reap big rewards for efficiency improvements due to buoyant metal prices and the growing demand of markets in Asia. Improving efficiency may also provide a better return compared to risks of expansions and bringing new projects online due to limited human and financial capital.An opportunity for improvement presents itself in the area of mine-mill reconciliation, which entails the quantification of the variance between measurement points along the mining value chain. Reconciliation factors are calculated from the variance between respective sections within the mining sequence. These factors are commonly used as key performance indicators to provide a check on the performance of the operations. Over parts of the mining value chain, there is a fair understanding of the reconciliation between the Resource and Reserve estimates and the measured metallurgical plant inputs and product outputs through understanding of the mine-mill interface. The quality of reconciliation data gathered across the mine and plant is generally not well established due to practices employed in generating the data. The reconciliation variances are often a function of data accuracy and quality used in the comparison. In general, the sources and magnitude of measurement and sampling errors and their impact on reconciliation are not that well understood. Examples of the current practices of mass measurement, sampling, sample preparation, chemical analysis and quality assurance for broken ore and across the metallurgical process stream are considered. Guidelines are given for those reconciliation elements that are identified as requiring a high degree of confidence for Mineral Resource/Reserve and metal accounting reporting. Gravity concentration of tin at Renison Limited uses tables and spirals to treat the various coarser fractions produced from sulphide flotation tailing. An acceptable final tailing cannot be made from one pass over the tables and spirals and therefore the tailing from these separators is reground and combined with the sulphide flotation tailing as the feed to the classification section. The gravity section became increasingly overloaded in the years preceding 1976 due to efforts to maximize tin recovery to the gravity concentrate. In April, 1976, two 2DSV Reichert cone concentrators in series were installed to treat the table and spiral tail- ing stream, prior to regrind, to scavenge a small tonnage of hard, coarse low tin grade material for rejection to final tailing. Gravity section loadings were decreased markedly, allowing operator attention to be directed more to table performance than to spillage collection. An increase in mill throughput of approximately 15% was possible following the commissioning of the Reichert cones. The cones are currently operated to make the minimum tonnage of tailing consistent with reasonable- gravity section loadings.

The capabilities of the three 61R and one 81R Robbins Raiseborers currently in use at Mount Isa are defined. Their applications in the development of ventilation and hoisting shafts, orepasses, escape routes, fill passes etc. are described and possible future uses of these and newer raiseborers at Mount Isa are examined. Problems associated with the use of raiseborers, together with ways of overcoming them are discussed. The impact of raiseborers on the mining operation is assessed in terms of new approaches to design and development, safety, cost and manpower efficiencies.

Rajasthan of western India blessed with rich base metal and phosphorite deposits. The biogeochemical and geobotanical methods of mineral exploration are greatly used in parts of Rajasthan Zawar, Khetri and Ambaj multi-metal project Gujarat and Jhamarkotra phosphorite deposit. These principles are exclusively based on certain assumptions about the anomalous chemical composition in plants and distribution and migration of indicator elements. Biogeochemical studies for lead zinc deposit of Zawar group of mines were carried out to locate the probable accumulators which could help in prospecting for these metals. The important roots of Impatiens balsamia plants contain 735 mg. of cadmium and crotolaria linifolia 603 mg., melhania futteyporensis 626 mg. lindenbergia muraria 443, celosiu argentia 360 mg. In the Khetri copper belt the vegetation is scanty and the species includes Acacia arabica, zyzypus jujuba and cactus euphorbia.

This paper examines the effects of a significant number of plant alterations and modifications to the lead flotation circuit during the past five years. Metallurgical effort is directed largely at the flotation performance of middling streams and current strategies are discussed. The automatic control of cell destination and collector additions are outlined in the latter section of the paper, along with a description of control hardware in current use.

Any engineering firm hoping to do business in the modern world must understand-and take into account-the social and economic realities of client, country, culture, and community. If these considerations are ignored, any large-scale international development project is doomed to failure even before it begins. In this changing world, the distinctions between `developed', `developing', and `less developed' nations are more and more blurred. The so-called `less-developed' and `developing' nations are rapidly acquiring technology, an educated man- agerial and technical class, manufacturing capa- bilities, a growing spectrum of developed financial and raw materials resources, and a broad range of labour skills. These nations are establishing themselves as an integral part of the modern world, on an equal footing with other nations and with justifiable expectations for an ever higher standard of living and an ever better quality of Life.

Innovative mining and blasting techniques were demanded at the Richmont Mines, Francoeur Mine in Quebec, Canada, by a narrow, shallowly dipping high grade gold ore body. The ore body being mined occurs as a thin tabular deposit varying in thickness between 1.5 and 3.7 metres, and dipping at 36¦. The mine proposed experimenting with open stoping techniques using small diameter drill-holes. The hangingwall required progressive, full face rockbolting after each production blast, utilising a specially manufactured machine which provided access to the hangingwall for both scaling and bolting. Blasted material is mucked from the stope by scraper and hoisted directly to surface without benefit of primary crushing.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

Sunburst PCF (Penetrating Cone Fracture) technology has recently undergone extensive underground field trials at Leinster Nickel Operations, Western Australia. Trials with the Sunburst machine started in September 1994 and continued through to December 1994 during which approximately 130 metres of tunnel were developed. The Sunburst technology was used to excavate sub-levels through ultramafic nickel ore for future sub-level caving operations at the Perseverance nickel mine. The Sunburst machine demonstrated reasonable instantaneous advance rates, however, there are still a number of future developments/design changes which need to be addressed prior to the PCF technology being trialed again in a production environment. This paper benchmarks conventional drill and blast at Leinster against the Sunburst Excavator machine performance within similar tunnel dimensions and rock conditions. In addition to productivity and cost information; environmental considerations, support and labour requirements are also discussed. Problems with the current machine design are highlighted and possible future design changes are suggested. The Sunburst machine could be a suitable technology for advancing development through weak to moderate rock conditions and may also reduce overall support costs. With the potential for automation and the ability to reduce rock damage into the development tunnel walls, it is proposed that the Sunburst machine warrants further consideration.

This work describes preliminary laboratory testwork to study the relative leaching response to cyanidation and thiourea leaching of an oxidised low grade gold ore. The potential of an alternative lixiviant like thiourea to commercial processing of mine dumps is discussed by specific reference to selected case histories. Ltd. currently has its headquarters and base for operations located in Townsville, Queensland. The Company's main current activities are the exploration and evaluation of the Pajingo Gold Property situated some 50 kilometres south-east of Charters Towers and in the northern Drummond Basin.The discovery of the Pajingo gold mineralisation by the Company was the indirect result of a regional program established to evaluate Carboniferous age volcanic plugs in north Queensland for gold mineralisation.
