Graham Hall and V. M. Cottle (Rosebery, Tas.) : In their paper on "The Mineralized Rift Valleys of Tasmania", Campana, Dickinson, King and Matheson have summarized a wealth of data from many sources. In proposing the new concept of a rift valley structure, they claim to have found a new guide to regional ore control and distribution in North-west Tasmania.Although the authors acknowledge suggestions made by us prior to publication of the pa:per, we are still at variance with their conclusions. We are not convinced that a rift valley structure exist~d when the Ordovician conglomerate was deposited. We are unable to find evidence for Cambrian deposition in a rift valley or reason to project the structure to embrace Hercules, Rosebery, and "possibly" Mt Bischoff.That the Great Lyell Fault (the authors' Owen Rift Fault) is a promising place to look for ore is not a new idea, but the existence of important ore deposits away from the structure reveals its inability to provide an adequate explanation of regional mineral distribution. A well-known structure that does have an influence on ore deposition is not discussed by the authors.STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONSThe great thickness of coarse unsorted Ordovician conglomerate lying in an elongate but narrow belt of country is presented as evidence of its deposition centrally within a rift valley, the position-of which is now said to be outlined by resistant slabs of the conglomerate. The marginal shears of the rift are said to show up well along the edges of the conglomerate.

The disagregation and privatisation of the mining and power gene ration operations of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria has being taking place over the past five years. This has transformed the service provision to the new organisations and has resulted in major change to the working lives and professional relationships of thousands of Australians. The authors wish to take this opportunity to explore the issues arising as the program of privatisation of public assets continues. Changes within the workplace which resulted from the outsourcing of the 'investigation and design' functions and more lately as a result of privatisation of the operating, generating and distribution businesses are discussed. The responsibility of managers retaining the services of design engineers has changed. There is an added responsibility of contract administration and an increased focus on intellectual property and strategic issues. The way in which the sectors are adapting is discussed and future directions are explored. We welcome this opportunity to explore the changes in professional life which have taken place over the last five years in the Latrobe Valley Power industry. Engineers and earth scientists have a pivotal role in the continuing successful operation of the three Latrobe Valley Mines of the generation companies. The Mines' collectively excavate annually over 13 million cubic metres of overburden and 48 million tonnes of coal for delivery to mine-mouth power stations and for briquette manufacture.

Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited has mining rights to four deposits of halloysite, which are located about 203 km north of Auckland, New Zealand. These primary deposits were formed by the hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite domes. Halloysite clay is currently being mined from two of these deposits and then processed for export markets. From humble beginnings in the mid 1950s, the Northland halloysite was processed initially for paper filler markets and then for higher value tableware and technical ceramic niche export markets. The paper will briefly cover the geology and processing of halloysite and then examine the history of New Zealand China Clays Limited, now Imerys Tableware New Zealand Limited and then look to its future as part of global industrial minerals company, Imerys.

"The benefits of measuring blast movement to reduce ore loss and dilution have been recognised by many people for many years and various methods have been used with limited success. Geita Gold Mine is running the pilot study on the blast movement monitoring (BMM) system which is a revolutionary method developed and patented by the University of Queensland and Blast Movement Technology (BMT). The system consists of directional transmitters placed within the shot prior to blasting, which are then located after the blast with a special detector and then the data is processed with purpose-designed software.As part of continuous improvement on grade control, Geita Gold Mine is running a research project in all operating pits with the objective of: quantifying the three-dimensional blast muck pile movement and finally utilise the movement data to define post-blast ore polygons and incorporate the movement dynamics during block modelling,quantify the potential savings for ore loss and dilution,improve mine geologists knowledge of blast dynamics, andstimulate greater co-operation between drill and blast engineers and geologists to achieve optimum blast designs.To any operation with selective mining, it is critical to the economics of an operation to control ore loss and dilution; getting it wrong will result in significant lost revenue. Implementation of ongoing pilot study on electronic balls as determinant on blast movement dynamics on ore would be of longer term solution and big investment pay back.CITATION:Mwijage, F, 2012. This paper discusses a number of examples of how environmental factors have been incorporated into the water management aspects of mining projects. One example is the Kingston Lignite Project in the South-East of South Australia where the most significant environmental issue was considered to be the effect of drawdown from mine dewatering and depressurization upon the use of groundwater. By proposing an alternative mining method - the use of floating dredges rather than a two-pass dragline method - drawdown effects would no longer be a concern. A second example is the Pine Creek Gold Mine in the Northern Territory. In this case the principal area of interest from an environmental viewpoint was water management - in particular effluent disposal, contaminated seepage from overburden and tailings, and project water supply. Through an integrated approach to the management of wastes and water the potential for water quality impairment was significantly reduced and external water supply requirements were also significantly reduced.

Pacific Coal Pty Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of CRA Limited) managed the interests of six members of a joint venture formed to mine and export eight million tonnes of export quality steaming coal from a mine developed at Blair Athol in the Bowen Basin of the Central Queensland coal fields. The mine is now operated by Blair Athol Coal Pty Ltd. Crooks Michell Peacock Stewart Pty Limited (CMPS) was awarded a project management and engineering contract for the total mine portion. Following a feasibility study, CMPS carried out an Optimisation Study which produced changes to the design of the project, thus resulting in the project budget being reduced by some A$13 million. In spite of a number of late additions to the scope of work, the project was completed at a final cost of A$148 million, many millions below the reduced project budget. The project was also completed several months ahead of schedule. Total services were provided to take the project from feasibility stage through to the establishment of an operational facility and included project management, planning and control, accounting and financial control, as well as the organisation of engineering, procurement, construction, industrial plant commissioning, and technical training matters.

Geotechnical design plays a key role in mine design. A proper geotechnical design provides a safe working environment and facilitates efficient mining operation. There are mainly three design approaches: (i) judgmental, based on observational and experiential facts, (ii) empirical, based on empirical design formulae; and (iii) analytical, incorporating numerical analysis. Most design applications are based on the design methods one and two as mentioned earlier. However, complexities arise in deep underground mining operations and deep open pit mines. These complexities and difficult geological environment introduce more uncertainties and simple empirical formulae would not be adequate as a design tool. These situations require numerical modelling and analysis of the design problems including interpretation of the results obtained from the analysis. There are several tools available for performing the numerical modelling and analysis. A brief review of the available tools is provided. The authors selected ANSYS (a general purpose finite element analysis tool) for use in mining geomechanics and geotechnical design. This paper includes several examples demonstrating the applicability of this software in designing mining structures. The authors hope that the design examples will demonstrate the use of the numerical modelling and analysis applications in excavation design.

Progress on this project will be verbally reported and a description given of the main features. A detailed feasibility study was completed in December 1986, and the Joint Venture has issued an Environmental Impact Statement. This was open for public comment until 16 February. Issues presently being considered include economic justification traffic, air quality, noise, marine fauna and flora, visual impact, heritage and construction impact. Detail design and construction is likely to commence in mid 1987, following determination of the above matters.

The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

This paper examines the broader implications of recent and ongoing changes in mineral resource managementå and reporting practices and the impact that these might have on mining companies. It is likely that an International Reporting Code will be developed in the near future, based on a number of National codes produced in recent years. However, this is only part of the reporting story, as an International Code brings with it a range of further issues to resolve. For the Code to be effective, there needs to be international recognition and perhaps licensing of Competent Persons and an expanded base of sponsoring professional bodies. Also, in an increasingly global business, shareholders, regulators and other interested parties need to know and understand the general processes involved in resource and reserve estimation and reporting in order to recognise companies that maintain the highest standards. There is a current trend towards greater scrutiny of company performance in a range of areas under the banner of corporate governance, and many changes are happening that will place greater disclosure burdens on all companies in the future. Good corporate governance means management of company assets for the benefit of the stakeholders. For a mining company, there is no greater asset than its mineral resources and reserves and directors are just as responsible for effective management of their mineral resources as they are for financial good practice. The paper looks at the relevance of corporate governance principles to mineral resource management and the changes that this could bring to the way that companies deal with regulators, shareholders, financiers and others. Finally, increased scrutiny and further regulation inevitably means greater effort by the industry and higher costs. Despite this the author believes that there are substantial offsetting benefits to be gained by companies prepared to take the initiative in improving resource management practices and communicating these improvements to shareholders. In order to achieve the benefits however, the industry needs to fully engage in the changes that are taking place û setting its own standards and working with the regulators rather than sitting back and being legislated against. Mineral resource reporting provides a good model of how this process can work and there will be other opportunities in the coming years as the industry seeks to develop best practice in mineral resource management. The Quesnell-Stikine arcs, in the Canadian Cordillera, are host to Triassic and Early Jurassic alkalic porphyry Cu-Au and calc-alkalic porphyry Cu-(Mo-Au) deposits formed outboard of ancestralNorth America in island-arc tectonic settings (McMillan, 1991). The majority of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au deposits are products of a discrete magmatic event at the end of the Triassic, with a second and smaller event in the Early Jurassic (Mortensen, Ghosh and Ferri, 1995). Of the Triassic complexes, the Galore Creek alkalic intrusive suite is one of the largest and most silica-undersaturated intrusive complexes, and host to the most significant undeveloped alkalic porphyry Cu-Au resource in North America (Lang, Stanley and Thompson, 1995). Because of the common presence of feldspathoidal-bearing rocks in the complex (Enns et al, 1995), Galore Creek likely represents an end member example of the alkalic porphyry Cu-Au class. The Galore Creek alkalic Cu-Au-Ag porphyry district, located in NW British Columbia (Canada), contains 12 mineralised prospects (Enns et al, 1995; Micko et al, 2007; Schwab et al, in press) with a total measured and indicated resources of 785.7 Mt at 0.52 per cent Cu, 0.29 g/t Au and 4.87 g/t Ag (NovaGold Resources Inc, February, 2008). The Central Zone is the largest and best delineated. Other economically important mineralised centres include the South-West, Bountiful, West Fork and Junction deposits. The South-West Zone, the focus of this contribution, is a Cu-Au-Ag breccia-centred deposit with a measured and indicated resource of 69 Mt grading 0.42 per cent Cu, 0.69 g/t Au, 2.67 g/t Ag. Hosted in brecciated intrusive rocks, the South-West Zone is distinctly younger than the Central Zone and most of the other mineralised centres (Enns et al, 1995; Schwab et al, in press). The South-West Zone therefore preserves the late stages of hydrothermal evolution at Galore Creek. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Preliminary calculations suggest that spoil piles in the Bowen Basin will undergo approximately 4 m settlement as the ground water table recovers after mining is abandoned. Approximately 1 m of differential settlement is possible. Superimposed on this will be a long term creep settlement of 1-3 m/log cycle of time. Depending on the nature of the spoil material, partially submerged spoil piles could be sufficiently stable although to ensure stability during long term creep it may be necessary to flatten the final spoil pile face to approximately 25¦.

Proton microprobe and electron microprobe analysis are being used in combination for in situ determination of the trace element contents of oxide, sulphide and silicate minerals in a sample of the Merensky Reef. Initial results indicate that chromites contain only Ni, Zn, Ga, Zr ar d Nb. Platinum-group elements, if present, are at concentrations less than 2 to 6ppm. Ru, Rh and Pd are the only platinum group elements to be consistently detected in the sulphides. PentLindite is the most important host for these elements with the concentration of these elements being dependant upon the mineral association in which it occurs

Close circuiting autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is an energy efficient way of grinding and a number of operations have utilised this in the design of their comminution circuits. Owing to the large flow of slurry through the mill that results from operating this way the grates and pulp lifters have to be designed to cope. However, the literature has little or no information on how grate and pulp lifter size and design are related to their ability to remove slurry from the mill. Over the last few years the JKMRC has been researching this area and has developed relationships between grate/pulp lifter design and flowrate capacity. At the same time it has determined the major causes of pulp lifter inefficiency and a solution to preventing this inefficiency (the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter). This paper describes the models that have been developed through this program and uses industrial scale data to illustrate their accuracy. Results from the industrial trials of the Twin Chamber Pulp Lifter are also presented.

Some thirty ore minerals occur in the Mount Morgan orebody. Pyrite is the dominant mineral with chalcopyrite, magnetite and pyrrhotite major components. Gold and gold tellurides, in accessory amounts, are economic- ally important. The prevalence of volcanic rocks in the mine area and the presence of trace amounts of such minerals as cassiterite, gold, native bismuth and rutile suggest a voicanogenetic origin for the ore. The ore occurs in a breccia pipe which cuts through the volcanic and associated strata but the former existence of a syngenetic stratiform ore bed is evidenced by the presence of occasional masses of perfectly banded sulphide ore including a barite-rich "black shale" with sulphide layers exhibiting slump structures. Mineralization is thus both _ syngenetic and epigenetic. The orebody (breccia pipe) is intruded by small stock-like bodies of quartz latite which is believed to have been the upward rising magma invading the orebody of which it is the parent. This has resulted in the annealing recrystallization of the ore minerals and the quartzose gangue with a low strain rate due to magma drag and dilation during intrusion.

Studies of the morphology of seamounts within the Hawaiian, Line Islands, Gilbert and Phoenix Seamount groups indicate that the morphology and size distribution of seamounts vary significantly from one seamount group to another. The Line Islands group appears to be the most complicated of all the groups studied thus far. This group is complicated by reactivation of volcanism, which has superimposed volcanics on sedimentary rocks. These seamounts display abundant volcanic features on their summits. Seamounts within the Hawaiian seamount chain display a marked absence of volcanic features due to the . presence of thick carbonate caps. Reef platforms and sealevel benches are very common on these seamounts but are absent from seamounts in most other seamount chains in the central Pacific. Slope angles vary regionally between seamount groups. The minimum slopes are found on Necker Ridge in the central Pacific basin. The maximum slopes are found on ridge-crest seamounts. Roughness increases proportionally with mean slope angle.

Magmatic-related low sulfidation hydrothermal ore systems at plate margins exhibit distinct spatial and temporal zonations which can be used to aid mineral exploration and development. Low sulphidation systems at all crustal levels exhibit the same paragenetic sequence of events: early breccia formation, followed by quartz - secondary feldspar sericite/illite veining, then mineralisation, and final argillic overprint. This sequence of events is interpreted to reflect the initial emplacement of melts at high crustal levels, and the progressive cooling of that melt and release of magmatic constituents into a circulating hydrothermal system.   Low sulphidation systems in the south-west Pacific region exhibit a vertical zonation in deposit types: from porphyry copper-gold at deep levels, quartz-sulfide-gold at mesothermal to deep epithermal levels, carbonate-base metal gold at mainly epithermal levels, and epithermal quartz silver-gold at shallow levels. It is interpreted that the characteristics of each of these styles of deposits is produced by mixing with circulating waters of different physio-chemical compositions.

In contrast with mining in areas close to the main centres, mining in remote areas is characterised by comparatively high initial investment and relatively high running cost for the life of the mine. This is because of:the real cost of establishing and running the operation at a location distant from the necessary infrastructure; and the perceived risks priced into their costs by the multitude of suppliers involved in the project. Optimal co-operation between the mine and the supplier in developing the right rela tionship and the correct technical solution permit both cost elements to be reduced. This re duction may well mean the difference between success and failure. This paper examines the possibilities for optimising the contribution of the equipment supplier to the overall success of the process. Issues covered include the necessity to provide more than merely equipment fit for the purpose , but also the need to maximise the benefits of equipment ownership over the life of the mine. A simple method of determining the optimum timing for equipment replacement or rebuilding is proposed . Furthermore the maintenance contract (or performance agreement) is suggested as a means of leveraging the supplierÆs commitment to the mining operation. The specific examples are based on experience with mobile equipment but the methodology has relevance to other equipment and supplies.

This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.

A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.
