An approximate rapid design system for tunnel liners and underground structures is presented which permits the effects of structure geometry and stiffness, rock quality in terms of its deformation modulus, and the applied system loading to be entered as data to produce direct designs conforming to stress limitations, optimum reinforcement requirements and restraints on section dimensions. An 'equivalent column' concept is introduced for modelling the rock mass in contact with the structure. Only the rock treatment is given in detail but the results of sensitivity analyses, with reference to rock quality, for a typical liner design are given and these results related to a number of empirical design approaches.

The application of high pressure water jet technology to the drilling of longholes in coal has resulted in the development of a system currently capable of drilling to lengths greater than 200m. Field tests at the German Creek Mine have demonstrated directional control of the holes within a 0.5m section of the seam. Initial application of the technique at the German Creek operations is for drilling methane drainage holes. The Central West of New South Wales is emerging as a significant metallogenic province. The development of Northparkes Mines (North Limited) and the Cadia Hill deposit (Newcrest) are establishing NSW as a highly prospective porphyry copper-gold province. Exploration in the area has been further buoyed by the Ridgeway discovery by Newcrest near Cadia. The fact that the Ridgeway prospect was discovered 300 m below surface under Tertiary basalt cover indicates that surface prospecting can no longer be considered alone as an adequate method to find significant new deposits.

This paper reviews the proportion of energy attributable to comminution within the Australian gold and copper mining sector. The need for this is motivated by inconsistencies in the quoted energy usage data and the lack of a common basis for reporting the fraction of energy in mining that is attributable to comminution. This study should form a reliable basis from which to assess both demand and opportunities to reduce energy consumption.The proportion of milling energy was calculated for the major producers in the Australian gold and copper sector. A sampling methodology created by Powell et al (2003 - 2010) was initially used to provide an accurate and meaningful measure of the energy used in the comminution process. However, no useful method for grouping similar mines was found. Fortunately, a surprisingly large amount of high quality data was found from a number of different sources, allowing the development of robust relationships to be used to estimate a high proportion of the unknown values. The fraction of energy attributable to comminution was found to be dependent on how the total energy consumption was defined. For instance, comminution accounted for 52 per cent of the electrical energy, but only 21 per cent of the total energy publicly reported by the mines because a substantial proportion of energy used on a mine is in the form of transportation fuel (mostly diesel). Critically, the measured electrical energy consumption does not account for transmission and generation losses, while diesel energy usage is typically quoted according to its calorific value. This review proposes that diesel should instead be converted via the mechanical efficiency factor for diesel engines. Using this conversion, comminution was found to account for 36 per cent of the available energy on average. This approach allows a useful basis of comparison for mines regardless of whether milling energy is obtained from electrical or diesel generation. A summary of the results are shown in Figure 7 with other values obtained from literature. The total comminution energy assessed in this study accounts for 1.3 per cent of AustraliaÆs electricity consumption, this figure will increase as the other mineral commodities are added to the study.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R, Powell, M S and Tiang, M, 2012. Chile, which hosts around 30 per cent of the worldÆs copper resources, is now the largest producer and exporter of copper. Chilean copper output accounts for more than one-quarter of total worldwide production. An increase to around 40 per cent is forecast by the end of the century. In addition, Chile ranks eighth in silver production and 11th in gold output. In Chile, mining generates more than eight per cent of the countryÆs GDP and the total value of mineral exports is more than US $7.85 billion corresponding to more than 25 per cent of South AmericaÆs mineral production. The rate of growth of Chilean mineral production is indeed impressive. Table 1 shows that in the period 1969 - 1998, copper annual production increased 564 per cent from 667 000 t to 3 764 000 t. Gold production went up 27 times from 1827 to 49 770 kg. Silver output grew 1219 per cent from 95 650 kg produced in 1969 to 1 166 380 kg in 1998. Several facts explain this dramatic increase of production, but the most important was the success of exploration sustained over the same period. This resulted in the discovery of several world-class deposits which when developed into mines, account for much of the production increases. Therefore, this summary review shows the success of basic exploration carried out during the last 30 years in the Chilean territory. The review is based on data already published in different specialised mining books or magazines. It only includes those world-class discoveries not the lesser discoveries important at local scale. All figures were calculated using 1998 $US dollar and average estimated metal prices valid for 1999: copper $US 1653 per t ($US 0.75 per pound), gold $US 9452 per kg ($US 294 per ounce) and silver $US 177 per kg ($US 5.5 per ounce).

Pinched Sluices, in a variety of guises, are used extensively for the separation of minerals according to density. In the authors' work a pilot-scale sluice has been constructed with provision for splitting the discharge stream into a number of layers. The composition and flowrate of the stream can thus be analysed as a function of depth and the results presented graphically. The effects of such parameters as total flowrate, pulp composition and particle size on overall performance can be clearly seen from such data.

Geomorphology is one of the most basic elements in geographic enviroments. Geomorphological mapping is significant in the spatial distribution of representing land form and understanding various features of geomorphology. Geomorphological mapping began very early in China, as the map, showing conekarst(karst pinnacles) of Juiyishan, Hunan province, it was drawn in 168B.C., which was excavated from Han tomb. Mawangdui, Changsha. Its original idea of map-making is rather similar to that of modern map and could undoutedly be the oldest map of tropical karst discovered in the world.Before liberation, landform mapping was done piecemeally and only a small number of maps were prepared by a few editor as insets.

Various factors influence the exploration geologist or geochemist in his choice of.an analytical method for gold and other elements which may help him find the elusive gold deposit. One of the first decisions the geologist must make is the nature of sample media to collect for his survey. Needless to say there are many media available depending on the situation. These include rocks, soils, heavy mineral concentrates (from overburden drilling and panned concentrates), humus, vegetation, water, lake bottom sediments, stream sediments, etc. The choice of the sample media will depend to a large degree on the state of development of the particular project from grassroots to mine feasibility. The nature of the geological information required will affect which media and which analytical technique should be chosen for the analysis. Valid sampling from the initial sample collection, preparation and subsampling aspects may also help to determine which analytical procedure is best. Cost and turnaround time are of prime. importance to the explorationist, as it should be, however, these aspects should not be detached from receiving accurate and reliable results.

The presence of rock joints has a huge impact on the strength, deformability, and permeability of fractured rock masses by providing surfaces of weakness on which further deformation are more prone to occur, and by serving as the major channels of water flow due to low matrix permeability. In earlier studies, water flow-through rock joints is often assumed as laminar flow between two ideal smooth parallel plates, and the well-known cubic law was derived and widely used to characterise the hydraulic behaviour of rock joints. However, natural rock fractures are irregular and of spatially varied aperture. Thus, the concept of equivalent hydraulic aperture was introduced to modify the cubic law. Numerous works have been conducted on the relation between hydraulic aperture and mechanical aperture incorporating various geometrical parameters. The surface roughness is one of the most sensitive factors for water flow-through rock joints. The aperture distributions are irregular in natural roughed fractures relative to the parallel plates. Barton et al (1985) and Olsson and Barton (2001) incorporated the joint roughness coefficient JRC in evaluating hydraulic aperture and proposed an empirical equation based on fluid flow tests. However, their equations do not conform to the dimensional consistency. Many other researchers (Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Xiong et al, 2011; Li et al, 2019) considered aperture distributions in their equations. But the aperture distributions change during shear was always neglected. The contact of rock joints also has a significant impact on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of rock joint, since fluid tends to flow-through a rough joint along connected channels while bypassing the contact obstacles with tortuosity. Nonetheless, previous research mostly considered joint roughness or aperture changes based on 2D joint profiles, while the contact and tortuosity based on 3D surfaces were often overlooked. Only a few works have been made on quantifying the effect of contact area on flow behaviour (Walsh, 1981; Zimmerman et al, 1992; Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Yeo, 2001), and mostly ignored contact area change induced by shearing and the associated impact on flow behaviour. Summarily, the quantification of fracture geometry effects on water flow in single rock joints still needs further investigation, especially when considering coupled shear-flow processes. This paper, therefore, aims to study the impacts of contact area and aperture distributions of the single rock joint on the flow behaviour. The evolutions of contact area and aperture distributions induced by shear are considered. Then, an improved model for estimating the hydraulic aperture with the mechanical aperture incorporating the above factors is developed. Finally, a series of shear and shear-flow tests are conducted on artificial joint samples and the model performance is verified by comparing against the results of experimental tests.

Recent develognents in zinc flotation at the North Broken Hill Limited concentrator are discussed. An outline of the history of zinc flotation and a description of current practice is presented. Installation of on-stream X-ray analysis probes has resulted in inproved metallurgical performance and focussed attention on automatic control. Results are presented of investigations made over the past six years which have led to the formulation of experimental schemes for the automatic control of zinc flotation.

An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

The Antarctic Peninsula consists of accretion complex sedimentary and volcanic rocks, talc-alkaline magmatic are rocks, marginal basin sediments and extension-related alkali basalts, dominantly of Mesozoic to Cenozoic age. Metallic minerals have been recorded at "250 localities but two thirds of these are innocuous occurrences of Fe+Cu accessory minerals. The remaining -70 localities are related to hydrothermal mineralization processes. Metallogenetic associations identified are: vein and breccia-hosted Fe+Cu+Zn+Pb+Mo or Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn, shear-hosted Fe+Cu, volcanogenic Fe+Cu and pegmatite-hosted Fe+Cu+Mo+Mn. Anomalous Au, Ag, As, W and Sb also occur but are not of economic interest. Metallogenic zoning is unproven and genetic models are uncertain, possibly involving volcanogenic, epithermal to hypothermal vein and porphyry-type systems. Substantial field and laboratory studies are required to understand distribution and Genesis.

Stressed steel cables, similar to those used in pre-stressed concrete, have been used for rock mass reinforcement, in civil engineering, for many years. This type of reinforcement has been attempted for open pit wall support, on several occasions, but has never gained wide acceptance as a practical approach because of high cost and complexity of installation in a mining environment. On the other hand, untensioned, fully grouted cable dowels (cable bolts) have gained wide acceptance for ground support in underground mining and it is perhaps surprising that this technique has not been used to a greater degree in open pit mining. The first systematic application of this technique in Australia was at the Mary Kathleen uranium mine in 1976, where it was spectacularly successful in maintaining steep stable walls in a jointed rock mass with unfavourably dipping structures. Cable bolting, and other techniques, are now being used to an increasing degree for wall support in both small and large open pits, for two basic applications: 1. stabilisation of potentially unstable sections of a wall, or 2. to allow steeper walls and reduce waste stripping volumes. In virtually every situation, wall rein- forcement has significant economic as well as technical advantages. The paper describes the development of the techniques, the mechanisms of wall support, the methods used, and discusses several case histories of its application to Australian open pit mines.

Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. The Cleveland Mine has an annual ore production of 400,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.79 per cent tin and 0.30 per cent copper. It is achieved by an open stoping method, mechanised overhead sub-level benching. The operation is trackless with a ramp access from all working places to the surf- ace. Broken material is loaded from the stope and development headings into diesel trucks and hauled to the surface crushing plant.

Methane and fire hazards have a vital effect on work safety and continuity of mining plant operation. In the 1990s, the SMP hazards monitoring and ventilation control systems, based on continuous measurement of air parameters, were put into operation at nearly 30 Polish mines. These systems provide continuous measurement of methane concentration within the range of zero to 100 per cent with automatic switching off of electrical energy immediately after detection of potentially explosive conditions. Early detection of coal spontaneous combustion and open fires is made by continuous measurements of CO, CO2, smoke and O2 content in mine air as well as temperature changes in air and rock mass. The essence of the system is intrinsic safety of all underground instrumentation and uninterrupted central power supply from the surface. All abnormal and critical states are signalled to the mine control room. These trigger alarm and emergency procedures. The computer based ventilation monitoring and control system also performs the function of an expert system for fire detection and underground fire fighting. The mine control operator (dispatcher) makes use of stored data in computer escape route schemes and procedures for the safe withdrawal of miners from hazardous areas. The operator can put in motion intrinsically safe alarm signalling units and banners with programmed messages indicating escape routes.

The Olympic Dam mining operation is some 520 kilometres NNW of Adelaide on the Roxby Downs Pastoral lease. The deposit containing copper, uranium, gold and silver was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). A joint venture was formed in mid-1979 between WMC (51 per cent) and British Petroleum (BP, 49 per cent) for the development and exploitation of the deposit. WMC assumed 100 per cent ownership after acquiring BP's share in early-1993. Ore is won from a highly mechanised underground mining operation and processed to refined products. Current annual output from the mining of 3.0 Mt of ore is approximately 83 500 t of refined copper, 1400 t of uranium oxide, 750 kg of gold and 12 000 kg of silver. Conventional long hole, open stoping techniques are used to extract the production ore. Since stope production began in April 1988, full surveys and appraisals of stopes have been carried out to evaluate the integrity of the design and blasting techniques. This evaluation included the determination of the degree of dilution or non break that had occurred. Performance information also made it possible to re-design any adjacent stopes to retrieve remaining ore and conversely, avoid the chances of targeting backfilled material in the future. Performing stope surveys proved not only to be a time-consuming process but one fraught with access and line-of-sight problems. Occasionally it was not possible to obtain any stope survey data, and as was often the case with the mine pass system, rarely. In 1992 the sudden failure of the pillar between the fine ore and mullock passes and the subsequent delays to production, emphasised the need to effectively monitor pass wear. Initial information regarding the development of the Cavity Measurement System (CMS) prototype (Figure 1) indicated that it had the potential to solve these problems by the introduction of a remote scanning device into a cavity. Following a great deal of investigation, Olympic Dam Operations purchased the first CMS in Australia. This paper discusses its application for all underground void surveys and the procedures developed to manage both field and office requirements.

SPOT imagery acquired in May 1986 of the areas that include the Dugald River lead-zinc lode, northwest Queensland, Australia and the Ngwenalekau copper deposit, Botswana has been evaluated and compared with LANDSAT MSS imagery of the same areas. The data have been processed using band combinations, band ratioing, principal components analysis and classificatory techniques and the outputs compared with those of geobotanical, geochemical and biogeochemical data as well as geological information. For both study areas the image processing techniques cited have successfully distinguished discrete vegetation associations related to discrete surficial and bedrock geological units; and, notwithstanding the sharp contrasts between the nature of the geobotanical anomalies that in both areas occur over mineralised bedrock in Proterozoic sedimentary sequences, they have successfully identified the areas of anomalous vegetation over the mineral deposits. Greater vegetational and geological detail is revealed than on outputs generated from LANDSAT MSS data [see Cole, 1977, 1982(a) and (b)]. The additional information yielded by SPOT imagery compared with LANDSAT MSS imagery results from its greater spatial resolution - 20 metres as against 79 metres - and from ti fact that the three SPOT MSS spectral bands - 0.50 0.59um, 0.615-0.68um and 0.79-0.89um - respectivelc cover those sections of the electro-magnetic spectrum in which leaf pigments, notably chlorophyll, absorption for photosynthesis and leaf cell structure strongly influence reflectance. This accords opportunities for the detection of reflectance aberrations caused by stress due to drought and/or metal toxicity as well as for the identification of anomalous vegetation communities of moderate sizr These cannot be accurately discriminated on LANDSA I MSS imagery on which only very large geobotanical anomalies like that over the Lady Annie phosphate deposit in northwest Queensland [Cole, 1977, 1984; Cole and Owen-Jones, 19771 can be detected.

LoRa (Long Range) is a low-power, long-range wireless communication technology that has gained significant research interest for its potential use in multi-hop linear wireless sensor networks (LWSNs) for underground mines. These networks deploy LoRa-enabled sensor nodes in underground mines, together with LoRa repeaters placed along mine tunnels to relay sensor data to a LoRa gateway, which connects to a backend network for application-level processing. Since the packets generated by sensor nodes farthest from the gateway have to hop through many repeaters, their probability of successfully reaching the gateway is significantly lower due to the higher chance of packet collisions compared to sensor nodes closer to the gateway, resulting in a lack of network fairness for the sensor nodes. In this paper, we first present an algorithm to improve the fairness of a LoRa LWSN by grouping neighbouring nodes and adjusting the number of packet re-transmissions and transmission intervals for each group. Then, we demonstrate that the fairness of a simulated LoRa LWSN can be improved by approximately 500 per cent by applying our algorithm. We verify our algorithm with network simulations under different network traffic levels and grouping strategies, obtaining fairness improvements in each scenario. Our algorithm and results will pave the way towards developing highly fair LWSNs for underground mining applications.

Placer Dome Asia Pacific operates eight mines in the region and has two closed operations that are either under rehabilitation or at the latter stage of care, monitoring and maintenance. All operating mines are scheduled to close within the next ten years based on current proven reserves. Mine closure planning and associated risk assessments are integrated into both strategic planning and day-to-day operations within the Placer Dome group. Mine closure is all about predicting the potential risks and Placer DomeÆs knowledge has improved following the planned closure at Kidston Gold mine in North Queensland. Planning for closure commenced in earnest in 1994, and focused on identifying the issues and associated potential risk to the environment, and ensuring that the most suitable control measures were implemented leading up to and following closure in July 2001. At all times during the process of planning, implementation, safety contractor management and post closure, the identification of risk and potential threats to the business have been identified and managed. Post closure risk assessment of rehabilitation strategies potential to fail has been completed in conjunction with URS and opportunities to manage these potential failures in perpetuity will be discussed along with lease surrender. Misima Mines is currently processing low-grade ore and plans to close in 2004. Planning for closure has been ongoing for several years with a focus on the social aspects and the impact of the mine closing on a remote island community. Misima Mines has assessed the risk profiles using a community closure focus group, to identify both the biophysical and social aspects for closure.
