The Hodgkinson goldfield contains over 50 separate lodes which have produced 9.7 tonnes of gold from ore averaging 37 g/t. The gold-quartz.lodes are spatially separate from tin and base metal mineralisation, associated with Permo-Carboniferous granitoids in the province. Host rocks consist of sub-greenschist metamorphic grade shale, conglomerate, sandstone, spilite, chert and melange. Oreshoots average 100 x 30 x I m in Size and are contained in cross-cutting quartz. filled with steep-dipping shear zones. Mineralisation in the quartz. consists of gold with minor arsenopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite with rare calcite. Scheelite and stibnite are aSSOCIated locally but are not necessary proximal or coeval. Alteration is restricted to centimetre-scale phyllic selvedges adjacent to the veins and veinlets.Most of the lodes and vems occur within six main 1.5 x 0.25 km mineralised areas whIch may indIcate separate areas of fluid flow and precipitation. Ore controls differ m melange- and sandstone-hosted lodes but several features are common to all the oreshOOlS. Most of the lodes occur within zones of duauon that are caused by splaymg, refraction through carbonaceous shale-sandstone contacts, or by rolls and changes in strike and dip.Lithologic contacts may act as areas of permeability and chemistry contrast which focus fluid and precipitation. Tensional veins are common between parallel shear zones and curved spur veins occur both in the hangingwall and footwall of the main fissure. Intersections and contacts may have enhanced local fluid flow in many of the areas.

Powercoal Pty Ltd operates eight underground coal mines in New South Wales and produces coal for both domestic power stations and the export market. Approximately 40% of total production is from continuous miners. Over the past five years, place change mining methods have been introduced to improve productivity from continuous miners. This has involved utilising the existing coal clearance system from the continuous miner to the ratio feeder using trailing cable shuttle cars.By late 1996 average productivity at Cooranbong Colliery using this system had plateaued at 800 tonnes per eight hour shift. A number of factors were identified to increase average productivity to 1500 tonnes per eight hour shift. An improved coal clearance system was one of the factors identified.

Current classification of resources is entirely a subjective task. The various international reporting codes (such as the JORC Code) provide Competent Persons and practitioners with little specific guidance on the standard of work and levels of uncertainty required to classify resources into Measured, Indicated and Inferred. Furthermore, little guidance is given in the conversion of Resources to Reserves and the potential impacts on classification of uncertainties in the modifying factors. Working back from the intended use of the resource estimates, and in understanding the tolerance for uncertainty by the end user of such estimates, insights into the objective and requirements of classification can be determined. Following this approach a comprehensive set of (quantitative where possible) guidelines have been determined that will ensure resources meet the desired objective of each classification, and are consistent and comparable. The guidelines look at what is required for each step in the resource estimation process in order to ensure the final resource estimate meets the desired level of confidence. This approach provides a transparent, comprehensive, justifiable and largely objective method of classification. The implication of introducing such a guideline or approach is to highlight areas of a resource estimation that do not meet the requirements (ie drive the uncertainty beyond the objective) and then focus in on the risks that may flow on from that particular uncertainty, to mitigate or attempt to control those risks.

An experimental induration facility has been developed and used for conducting iso- thermal tests and plant simulation studies on the thermal induration of iron ore pellets. The influence of time, temperature, lime content, ore type, shale content and particle-size dis- tribution (e.g. Blaine Index) is being studied in a continuing programme. The present paper deals with experiments relating to the first three of these parameters and illustrates the use of an experimental design suitable for statistical analysis. The relations between isothermal data and the results of complete simulation rests are discussed.

The demand for iron ore has increased significantly in recent years, with new iron ore sources being mined to meet this demand. As the composition of sinter blends changes with the availability and cost of iron ore, so too does interest in the impact of new ore types on granulation and ultimately productivity. This paper describes a study into granulating characteristics of seven iron ore types, including various hematite and goethite ores. The effect of ore type on feed moisture requirements, green bed permeability, green bed strength and granule size distribution was examined for single ore blends containing coke, flux and returns. The ore size distribution was varied in these blends and its effect on granulating characteristics examined. It was found that the optimum moisture requirement of the ore was more dependent on ore type than ore size distribution, but ore size distribution (and specifically intermediate particle loading) had a greater effect on green bed permeability. The saturation moisture value for an ore was found useful in predicting both optimum granulation moisture and green bed permeability.

This paper describes the operation involved in the sinking of a concrete-lined elliptical-shaped shaft at North Broken Hill Limited.Major factors such as geological features, future ventilation, ore haulage at depth and their relation to the location and selection of the type of shaft are described.Features covered in the sinking of the shaft include equipment details, with special reference to mechanical mucking, operational cycles based on time study analyses for sinking, concreting and the placing of steel sets. The dissolution of carbon from carbonaceous materials into molten iron is a key step in various ironmaking operations. For example, in new direct smelting processes, carbon in the form of coal is injected into the molten iron bath, which leads to the dissolution of carbon. In foundry operations, typical recarburizer materials can range from high purity graphite to chars. The dissolution performance of these" materials is critical to the operation and could dictate the efficiency and economics of the process.Dissolution kinetics has been studied by various investigators to explain the influence of melt conditions and carbon type (Sahajwalla et al, 1994; Shigeno, Tokuda, and Ohtani, 1985; Orsten and Oeters; 1988; Ganguly and Reid, 1992; Wright and Taylor, 1993). The influence of melt sulphur content on the dissolution kinetics has been characterised (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), with sulphur retarding the rate of carbon dissolution. The carbon dissolution from different sources is seen to vary significantly even under similar melt conditions. This observation has been explained by investigators on the basis of the varying ash content present in the carbonaceous materials. However, ash content alone cannot account for the variability in dissolution kinetics reported in other studies. One such study is presented below.In a recent study (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), pulverised carbonaceous materials were injected into the molten iron bath and the" dissolution kinetics was established. The dissolution of graphite and glassy carbon, which contain almost 100 per cent carbon, was seen to be significantly different when the molten iron contained sulphur. The influence of melt sulphur content was explained on the basis of different wetting behaviour observed.Importantly, the study showed that even pure carbon sources dissolved at significantly different rates. Hence, their performance could not be explained on the basis of ash content.The key difference between graphite and glassy carbon is in their atomic structure. Graphite is highly ordered whereas glassy carbon has relatively poor ordering in its atomic structure. This study showed that the atomic structure in carbonaceous materials can have a significant effect on their dissolution performance.The focus of the present investigation which stems from the past study described above (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), is to investigate the influence of atomic structure of carbonaceous materials on their dissolution into Fe-C-S melts.The specific objective of this study is to determine the relationship between dissolution kinetics and crystallographic character of carbon sources. In order to accomplish this goal, a range of different materials representing a spectrum of carbon sources have been chosen for the investigation. These materials include brown coal char, two types of Auscarb (A and B), and commercial graphite. Auscarb is prepared by calcining Auscoal at 1000°C. Auscoal is made from chemically cleaned Australian coals (Bowling, Chandler and Waugh, 1990). Part 1 of this paper details the dissolution performance of the materials studied, while Part 11 describes the X-ray diffraction study. The relationship between the atomic structural dimension and dissolution rate constant is discussed in light of the results obtained.

The advantages of rapid and accurate analyses are becoming appreciated in many industries today and have resulted in a great increase in the number of samples received by their laboratories. This has caused some firms to consider the installation of one or more of the instruments available for analytical chemistry. In this country there are relatively few people with experience of instrumental methods and it is difficult for a firm considering the installation of such equipment to assess the advantages which instruments may give them, and to decide which instruments, if any, will be of most use to them. The object of this paper is to give a brief survey of instrumental methods in the field of inorganic analysis. Instrumental methods of analysis have numerous advantages when used correctly. They enable extremely rapid analyses to be made in many cases, e.g., analysis of refined lead by purely chemical means takes about two days whereas spectographically the analysis can be completed in approximately one and a half hours. The accuracy ofinstrumental methods, generally between 1 and 5%, is higher than most chemical methods for small percentages of impurities. Furthermore, if the instrument can be calibrated against absolute standards the errors are usually random and not biased to one side of the correct result. The sensitivity is high, enabling in many cases the detection and determination of smaller percentages than can be detected chemically. This high sensitivity enables and, in some cases, requires the use of very small samples, and results in considerable savings in reagents, allowing the analysis of considerably more samples without undue loss...

Experimentation with new methods, materials and machines to improve primary drilling and blasting is a continuing practice in the hard rock quarry operations of the BMI Group. These experiments will continue in the remote hope that one day we may produce a perfect feed for the primary crusher. As this day is still a long way off, the necessity to break oversize boulders will be a problem to be faced for the foreseeable future. To gauge the efficiency of primary blasting from this point of view, BMI monitor the tonnes of material crushed in the primary crusher for each boulder requiring secondary breaking. Over a period of about 10 years, this figure has improved from 30 tonnes througi the primary crusher per boulder, to 100 tonnes per boulder at our largest operation, which produces in excess of 2 million tonnes per year. Evan with this improvement, 25,000 boulders require secondary breaking each year This paper does not provide the solution to this problem, as like primary blasting, it will have to be constantly reviewed as new products and techniques become available. Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

As the mining industry faces times of change, new challenges arise to ensure raw material supply for the younger and future generations. Different scenarios are currently shaping the way we mine and teach mining engineering. Led by an increasing demand for raw materials, net zero requirements for improving long-term operation performance, technological advancements such as automation and digitalisation, safety improvements, environmental considerations and a need for social acceptance, mining is pursuing to change and adapt to these requirements at a faster pace. Such changing times raise new concerns, one of the most relevant is the lower number of students interested or enrolling in mining engineering and related fields leaving mining engineering as one of the less preferred career options between the younger generations. Nonetheless, it is essential to continue addressing and supplying the skill sets that is suited to contemporary and future of the mining industry. To this end, globally, academia is currently undergoing several initiatives such as curricula updates and adaptation, up skilling, improving teaching practices and techniques, including e-learning techniques, enhancing industry-academia and inter-university collaboration, and much more

Tin mineralisation occurs at Renison Bell, near Zeehan in Tasmania, as a group of cassiterite-bearing massive pyrrhotite bodies in Cambrian sedimentary rocks. Mineralising fluids from the underlying Pine Hill Granite have replaced carbonate rocks with massive sulphides and cassiterite. The discrete blocks of massive pyrrhotite have high density and high magnetic susceptibility contrasts with the comparatively barren country rock. They are strongly remanently magnetised and are excellent geophysical targets. A detailed geophysical model of the mine was created from a database comprising 1:2500 scale geological mapping and geological logs of approximately 4000 drill-cores. The model comprises 93 parallel cross-sections, each 1.5 km long, spaced 20 m apart. Each cross-section is comprised of up to 150 polygons which represent all known individual rock types and orebodies. The magnetic response of the model was computed and the residual between the model and the observed response, measured by a low-level helicopter magnetic survey, revealed several anomalies unaccounted for by the model. Drill testing of these anomalies led to the discovery of several hitherto unknown massive sulphide occurrences. Surface gravity data of the mine and surrounding district were enhanced by applying digital terrain corrections. The corrected Bouguer anomaly revealed a hitherto unknown positive anomaly associated with the ore zones of the Renison mine. The gravity anomaly of the model was also computed. Unfortunately, the limited resolution of the observed data prevented the delineation of ore targets. The terrain-corrected Bouguer gravity data were also used to model the shape of the underlying non-magnetic Pine Hill Granite. A computer inversion method was implemented to build a 3D block model of the granite. Results agreed with previous conventional 3D modelling techniques but yielded improved resolution of the granite form. The project involved development of new computer software to build and edit the large and complex 3D geophysical model of the mine and to compute the model's magnetic and gravity responses. Software was also developed to build and compute the gravity response of a 3D block model of the underlying granite.

The 6000m long King Headrace Tunnel will be driven through hard Owen Conglomerate in the Eastern third and feldspar porphyry in the Western two thirds, with the anticipated hardness up to 350MPa unconfined compressive strength. Since the Commission had not driven a long, large diameter tunnel for some twenty years, major research was undertaken to assess the current tunnelling trends. Tunnel boring machines were compared with drill and fire equipment. Rail equipment was compared with rubber tyred equipment. Tenders were called with tenderers invited to submit alternatives if desired. Commissioning and production excavation using the equipment is discussed with the final conclusion being that the individual items of equipment purchased combined to make an efficient hard rock drill and blast system capable of progressing through all rock conditions likely to be encountered on the King and Anthony Schemes.

The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013. The development and improvement of computer-based process simulation packages over the past 20 years has provided process engineers with a powerful tool to use in the design of complex metallurgical plants. The use of such modelling tools has enabled the design of process plants that minimise operating and capital costs whilst optimising plant efficiency and recovery. Almost every new project developed in the current market is underpinned by a simulation of the process. In line with engineering best practice this simulation should be based on laboratory/pilot plant test work results and sound assumptions. Any errors that are not identified in the development of the process simulation may have significant effects on the final design and operation of the processing plant. Developing a simulation of the process in a comprehensive, logical and auditable manner is thus essential in ensuring the simulation accurately represents the expected process plant behaviour. A methodology that ensures these requirements are met has been developed by SNC-Lavalin Australia and is described in this paper. The methodology includes the major review stages of data collection, model planning, model building and optimisation, model review, scenario testing and options development, and model reporting. All of these stages should incorporate comprehensive client interaction and review by a suitably qualified representative. In applying these methodologies SNC-Lavalin Australia ensures that the process simulation model developed can be confidently utilised in the design of the process plant, and in the estimation of operating and capital costs, whilst ensuring that engineering best practices are met.

The mineral pulp as it passes through grinding-classification, flotation and solid-liquid separation is examined in the context of it being a particulate fluid. By focussing on the complex viscosity and yield stress of the fluid, new control strategies are discussed. The mineral-particulate fluid is dominatred by non-Newtonian rheology (ie shear thinning, shear thickening, shear yield stress and compressive yield strength). The control of this Theology is seen to be dependent on the fundamental practice-particle interaction forces and with adequate information, it is possible to use the complex shear properties to advantage. The advantages, in terms of final waste and concentrate management, to high weight per cent solids in the mineral particulate fluid, are explored and control strategies outlined.

The gold treatment plant of Great Western Consolidated N.L. is at Bullfinch, Western Australia, 22 miles north of Southern Cross, which is 100 miles west of Kalgoorlie. A railway to Southern Cross connects the mine with the main Perth-Kalgoorlie line.The plant, which commenced operations on the 31st October, 1952, was, designed by Messrs. Alex: Stewart & Co. in consultation with the technical staff of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. to treat 1,000 long tons a day, made up of approximately equal parts of quarry oxidized ore and underground sulphide ore, by moderately coarse grinding (2-3 per cent plus 65 mesh Tyler) and straight cyanidation without straking. The design had to allow for future treatment of all sulphide ore at the rate of 40,000 tons per 28-day periodand to make provision for the possible later inclusion of preaeration treatment.The test work on .which design was based was done on representative development samples, the mine being divided into zones for this purpose, to check possible local variations from average treatment behaviour. Proposed mill feed mixtures were made up from time to time for complete ore dressing tests, which were conducted in the Western Mining Corporation laboratory at Kalgoorlie.The chief feature of the design was that the plant had to handle the extremes of very soft, poor settling and filtering oxidized ore and very hard, good settling and filtering sulphide ore. On one hand, crushers and mills had to be large enough to handle the sulphide ore and on the other, thickeners and filters had to be large enough to handle the oxidized ores.The design is marked by simplicity, the use of large units of equipment, and flexibility to cope with a variety of ores.
