Vitrokele technology is a resin process that can be applied in gold plants to reduce both capital and operating costs. The Vitrokele resin can be used for both precious metal recovery and for recovering free and combined cyanide from effluent streams. Vitrokele resin has been extensively tested at pilot plant level and is now applied successfully at a commercial heap leach facility in Zimbabwe where it is used in place of activated carbon for recovery of gold from pregnant leach solution. Significant capital cost savings were achieved by installation of a resin plant instead of a conventional carbon adsorption plant. Operation to-date has not seen any significant physical or chemical degradation of the resin either in terms of adsorption capacity/kinetics or physical appearance/size. This gold recovery process is equally applicable to slurry streams where it would be implemented in stirred tanks with interstage screens in a similar manner to a conventional carbon adsorption plant.

The advantages of coordinate geometry in design and construction of underground works are apparent for reasons of flexibility, security, computer operations, survey error analysis, and the use of numerical techniques for setting out and checking works. Integration with National or State survey systems is useful in the long term, both at design, construction and future works stage. Equipment and methods are available which permit "absolute" monitoring of structures and strata over long periods,to close toler- ances. This work can be carried out in the limiting urban environment. Rapid data acquisition by semi-automatic devices, or photogrammetry, utilizing electronic data processing is capital inten- sive, but provides more data than analogue surveys (i.e., setting out centre lines) and becomes more attractive with increased labour Costs.

The nickel refinery at Yabulu consumes an average of 118,000 kg/h of low pressure steam in stripping operations to-recover ammonia and carbon dioxide from product liquor and ore tailings streams. The steam used in the stripping operations is produced from the 25 MW power generation plant at the refinery. The back pressure on the non condensing steam turbines is maintained at 60 kPa.Studies have been carried out to determine the optimum amount of steam required to be generated for stripping operations. When steam production is increased, the product liquor flow from thewashing thickeners can be increased. This results in improved washing efficiency of the thickeners and therefore improves the plant nickel recovery. A computer thickener wash model was used to predict nickel recoveries at varying steam consumption rates.The studies have shown that in most plant situations, it is not economical to-generate more steam than that already available from existing power production.The studies also highlighted the necessity to use all steam generated from power production at all times to maintain maximum nickel recovery.

Mining is commonly seen as a typical basic industry with rough and even dangerous working conditions, heavy environmental load, and a low level of high-technology and automation with much manual work and operations. A mining operation (open pit or underground) is a very complex one consisting of many manual, physical, mechanical and logistical operations with different human interfaces and decisions. For this reason it is a demanding and potential area for all applications of automation and information technology: controlling difficult non-linear, time varying multivariable processes and machines; solving of ergonomic safety and environmental problems; automation of logistical systems; applying robotics, mechatronics, and information handling, etc. In addition to that, big economic sums are involved with these operations. On the other hand, automation technology has developed towards intelligent and adaptive systems including some from the above mentioned fields of automation. Connecting them with modern information and communication technologies makes the idea of an intelligent and unmanned mine more and more feasible in the near future. This requires intensive co-operation and co-ordination between the mining industry and manufacturers of mining machinery. This has been successfully accomplished in the five-year Intelligent Mine research and development program as well as the three years of subsequent implementation of its results in Finland. The basic elements of an Intelligent MineTM concept are:mine-wide information and data acquisition system; high-speed two-directional mine-wide communication network for real-time monitoring and control; computerised information management, mine planning, control and maintenance systems; automated and tele-operated machinery and equipment which are connected to the information system; and links to the public information networks. The degree of automation of an intelligent mine depends on many technical and economical factors. The basic precondition for such an approach is that it will improve the total economy of the mine. This paper will describe the Intelligent Mine Technology Program with the results. Also the implementation which took place during starting of a new underground mine (Outokumpu Chrome Oy Kemi Mine) will be described.

Leichhardt Colliery is developed for underground mining of coal seams at depths exceeding 280 m. Investigations of the area were conducted in phases, each designed to delineate seam characteristics more accurately and to indicate with increasing precision the nature of local geological features and the ranges of those coal properties susceptible to variation. The investigational campaign is described phase by phase summarizing evaluation of the area at the conclusion of each phase. Predictions of geological conditions likely to influence engineering planning are contrasted with actual conditions observed during trial mining.

The critical role of representative sampling is featured and illustrated by selected examples from the geosciences and beyond. Early in 1990, Pancontinental Resources (Base Metals) Pty Ltd commenced flotation treatment of ore from the complex copper-lead-zinc sulphide orebody at Thalanga, 65 km west of Charters Towers in North Queensland. The orebody consists mainly of primary sulphide ore but also contains a substantial proportion of supergene ores which are being processed during the first year of operations. The supergene ores are of three main types, designated as A, B, and C. Supergene A ores are essentially copper ores, containing little lead and zinc, while B and C ores are copper-lead-zinc ores with different degrees of alteration of the original chalcopyrite and different ratios of copper to zinc content. Copper is present in the supergene ores mainly as chalcocite, digenite and covellite. Lead and zinc occur mainly as galena and sphalerite respectively. This paper describes the development of flotation plant practice, aided by laboratory testing, to process the supergene ores. The major challenge in treating these ores is that a varying proportion of the sphalerite is naturally activated and is not easily depressed in flotation by the conventional zinc depressants.

The 1100 orebody is a massive copper sul- phide orebody which contains a major portion of the Isa Mine copper ore reserves of 130 million tonnes at 3.2%. The underground mining of a deposit as large as the 1100 orebody is technologically a complex operation as extraction strategies have to be evaluated with reference to 1. rock mechanics considerations, 2. safety and environmental standards, 3. production and operating require- ments and 4. metal recovery and costs. The mining philosophy in the orebody has undergone considerable change over the past five years as a result of experience and improved technology. At this stage, primary stopes are extracted by high rise sublevel open stoping and pillars by slot and mass blast drawn either under rock fill or as an open Stope.

Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

The producers of mineral sands on the East Coast of Australia might be regarded as having a simple task of selling Rutile and Zircon. Such is not the case. Differing quality and grain size requirements plus the dramatic increase in the percentage of mineral sold in a processed form have meant a large increase in the number of different end products handled. The resulting sales control problems are compounded by the need to be able to deliver against a large number of separate contracts which may relate to spot or long term sales in small quantities or in bulk shipments. Methods of helping management control this situation have been devised and incorporated into a suite of computer programs. Experience with the approach has been very satisfactory. The effect of changes to shipping schedules, commitment to new or changed orders, or proposed changes to production can be evaluated as and when necessary with little bother. Dragline operations have played a major and successful role in coal mining around the world for more than 30 years. Because of this long history, many of the operating draglines are reaching an age where maintenance and downtime costs are prohibitive, and decisions need to be made to either replace or refurbish them.In the current economic climate, refurbishment is a popular choice and this usually involves major structural repairs above and below the roller circle, together with replacement of the roller circle components. Often, the dragline tub is also replaced by a completely new one.

In this report,the results of the large diameter drilling tests in coal seams assisted with water jet are described. The stress relief in coal seams by this new method is as effective as by the conventional method and the penetration speed by this method is 1.5 times as fast as by the other method. 1 Introduction The average mining depth of Japanese coal mines has already attained about 700m from the surface. Almost all coal mines are suffered from occurrence of coal and gas outbursts. To prevent outbursts, some countermeasures are taken generally. The recent drought has highlighted the finite nature of AustraliaÆs divertible water resources. According to AustraliaÆs recently completed National Land and Water Resources Audit, development of water resources in southern Australia has reached or exceeded sustainable extraction limits. Similarly, 161 out of 538 groundwater management units are either totally allocated or already over allocated. Whilst mining only uses about three per cent of diverted water resources, water scarcity may be a major factor that determines whether potential mines can be developed in the future. Furthermore, the development of extraction and processing facilities that limit water use and maximise the re-use the waste water streams will be even more fundamental features of the mining industry in the 21st century than they are at present. There are encouraging examples where innovative water re-use technologies are significantly reducing the water used per unit of mined product. Whilst mining in the areas of Australia draining to the tropical seas may be less constrained by a current lack of water (60 per cent of divertible water resources drain into the Timor Sea, Gulf of Carpentaria and north east Coral Sea), it is highly probable that there will be increasing demand for these waters from the irrigation industry, whilst pressure will also be applied to ensure that environmental flows that benefit the coastal fishing and prawn industries are maintained. In the Great Artesian Basin, current research is demonstrating that the groundwaters are being recharged at rates considerably lower than current extraction. Whilst some other groundwater basins in arid and semi-arid Australia have currently untapped resources, these water are often relatively saline and/or may be intimately linked with key ecosystems in discharge areas. This paper presents an overview of the current state of our water resources and examines some of the key water use issues including allocation, use and reuse, environmental flows and competing demands on the resource that will ensure that water issues remain high on the policy agenda for mining, irrigation and other water users.

The Green Parrot and Reward stratabound silver-lead (copper-zinc) deposits are located in the eastern part of the Arunta Block. At Green Parrot, mineralisation is contained within a north-south striking lode horizon comprised of elongate lenses of massive garnet or calcsilicate-carbonate "lode rocks" with intercalated sericite-biotite schist and laminated biotite-feldspar schist. The "lode rocks" are increasingly calcareous to the west. The mineralisation is broadly zoned with an increase in lead content and decreases in copper and silver contents from east to west. The principal sulphide minerals are galena, sphalerite and bornite. The Reward deposit lies adjacent to a lens of massive garnet "lode rock" which is contained within garnetiferous sericite-quartz schist. Primary mineralisation consists of galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and pyrite. Both deposits are associated with a substantial thickening of the lode horizon which is narrow and discontinuous along strike from the Green Parrot and Reward deposits.

Structural fatigue damage of haul truck frames is a costly problem associated with the operation of large mine haul trucks. A monitoring programme is described which has been instigated to measure stresses in the frames of haul trucks under actual mine operating conditions. The instrumentation used and methodology employed in the computer analysis of the results is briefly described. The results of the monitoring programmes are reviewed, and the effects of various factors affecting structural fatigue damage of three common types of rear dump truck are considered. Factors discussed include the effects of haul route features (for example shovel, dump and crusher areas); the effect of operations such as turning, braking, loading and dumping; the influence of payload; the effects of malfunctions in suspensions; and the influence of haul route surface quality. It is shown that with respect to payload, while structural fatigue damage is increased with payload, the structural damage per unit of payload does not change significantly for moderate increases in payload above the nominal value. Finally, on the basis of these results, recommendations are made for haul route design and operational practices which will increase the structural fatigue life of haul truck frames.

The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. The chemistry of the pyrometallurg- ical recovery of copper is briefly reviewed in relation.to copper recovery methods.

At the LKAB, Iron Ore Mine, Kiruna, Sweden a preliminary investigation into the reliability characteristics of a fleet of load-haul-dump machines has shown that the hydraulic system is one of the most critical parts. Therefore, hydraulic system was selected for study and analysis through condition monitoring devices so that failure can be controlled or at least the failure consequences can be minimized.The hydraulic system has two different problems; one is that the contamination level is too high and the other is high temperature during operation. At high temperature, seals and tubes are a problem, because they stiffen due to carbonization, which leads to increasing leakage. The pumps and restrictions were responsible for the main temperature increase.

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

The assessment of the face velocity of blasts is important in the analysis and subsequent improvement of blast performance. POWERWAVE RADAR is a new tool which will make the collection of this data easier for blast researchers. The data collection technique ensures that a large amount of face velocity data is collected from a blast, and describes the velocity characteristics of the face at a new level of detail. This results in a greater understanding of the effect of drilling and blasting parameters on blast performance. Several case studies are presented which illustrate the collection technique, the type of data generated and how the data is used.

PISCES - the Planning and Information System for Coal Export Services has been developed by Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) to ensure the efficient and economic operation of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain. PISCES is a computer based integrated information and management system to coordinate operations commencing at minesites through the coal chain to shiploading at the Port. The PISCES system comprises a central database around which a number of planning modules interact. These include interactive programs for train planning and timetabling, stockpile management, berthing analysis and a coal shippers enquiry system. PWCS has previously developed - number of computer based systems for planning, controlling and monitoring complex coal handling operations and the extension of the PISCES system to the Hunter Valley Coal Chain is another initiative to assist the Hunter Valley Coal Export Industry in looking confidently towards the Future.
