Recent geological mapping has indicated changes to the stratigraphy of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The new stratigraphy and interpreted depositional environments are examined in relation to the distribution and genesis of stratabound mineral deposits. Basinward correlations are made with near-shore carbonate and psammite-rudite units in the Rum Jungle region. Most other units in the same region are condensed, indicating long- lived supratidal, intertidal or shallow conditions during most of the depositional cycle. Units containing most of the mineralisation represent the earliest near-shore developments of strongly reducing partly pelitic and evaporitic conditions and contain mainly uranium and base metals. Restricted distal, strongly reducing facies with associated felsic volcanics are also well mineralised, and mainly contain gold, silver and base metals, although some deposits are probably genetically related to synorogenic or postorogenic granites. Mineralisation in other facies is almost all epigenetic hydrothermal in origin, although minor mineralisation is related to volcanics, or dolomitic parts of the sequence. Areas of potential mineralisation include near-shore environments in the north, and carbonate reefs along growth faults. Two suites of postorogenic felsic volcanics and related sediments deposited in shallow water within and around northwest and east-northeast rift systems, overlie the metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline in the south. The suites have potential for volcanogenic deposits, mostly of uranium, gold and copper.

A natural gamma-ray gauge has been devel- oped for discriminating overburden and inter- seam sediment from low ash coal located on a moving conveyor belt. It is based on the difference in natural radioactivity of the sediment and overburden compared with the low ash coal, which is detected with a highly ef- ficient "Polyscin" NaI(T1) gamma-ray detector located underneath the conveyor. Gauges have been successfully installed on the bucket wheel boom of the two coal dredgers at the Loy Yang Open Cut. They are used to warn dredger operators that they are digging overburden or sediment and that action is required to avoid the sediment or divert it to the waste dump rather than send it to the coal bunkers at the power station.

The flight line spacing in low level aeromagnetic surveys is the principal factor governing both the cost and the amount of geological detail which can be extracted from the data. The rate at which geological resolution diminishes with wider line spacing is illustrated by progressive subsampling of a 200 m spaced data set from the Charters Towers region in Queensland.The usefulness of high frequency type filters in enhancing shallow structural features is seen to be limited to the 200 m data.It is concluded that each data set is suited to a particular scale and style of geological investigation with only the 200 m data having sufficient detail to identify the subtle structural patterns which are crucial to mineral exploration.

Exploration undertaken at Copley diapir has located several occurrences of oxidized supergene and primary sulphide copper mineralization at the margin of the diapir or in adjacent country rocks. The mineraliza- tion is related to carbonate-rich epigenetic solutions which moved along major structural features closely associated with the intru sive diapir.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. Magnetite has been used in coal processing for many years and it is likely that its use will continue well into the twenty first Century. While magnetite is only a minor cost component in coal processing, the use of processed magnetite in dense medium separation is essential to provide the split of quality coal products which the markets of today demand. The occurrence of magnetite in Australia is relatively abundant, but a combination of its iron content, magnetic properties, quality and proximity to the coal processing plants is essential to provide a low cost product for use in the Coal Industry. The demand for more splitting of coal in coal processing may require more grades of magnetite, particularly as a finer grade lower specific gravity medium to separate the finer quality low ash coals.

A study on the feasibility of mining the recently discovered Wallaby gold deposit is due for completion by mid-2000. Open pit mining is the favoured method. Determination of the impact of mining bench height on the recovery of ore, including the estimation of dilution and ore loss, is critical to the economics of the operation. Conditional simulation was used to derive a number of gold estimation scenarios within a typical volume of the deposit. These scenarios were interrogated for a selection of mining bench heights and ore block dimensions. The results were reported as a range of grade tonnage relationships and compared to the kriged resource model. This allowed the resource model to be calibrated to a specific mining bench height and ore block size. Once calibrated, more realistic dilution and ore loss values for a number of mining bench heights were calculated from the resource model. These values were then used to determine the economic sensitivity of particular mining methods. The spread of results from the simulations also provided an indication of the confidence in the kriged grade estimates for the different zones of mineralisation within the deposit and highlighted areas of any significant uncertainty.

'Nothing happens until something is sold' This statement is not original - it is a necessary orientation for marketing industrial minerals. The most important single philosophy of marketing is that it recognises the consumer as the starting point. Production orientation is concerned with producing products that the customer might buy. Market orientation is concerned with finding the needs of the customer and how they can be satisfied. The difference between the two approaches can be recognised in company structures but the most tangible difference is in the approach by a company to selling and development. In other words, it is the market that decides what can be done with a mineral. The markets requirements dictate what mineral, what grade and what price will be paid. Therefore it follows that when pricing a product we should avoid taking the basic cost and arriving at a final selling price through a series of standard markups (unless government insists on it). We should start with the price the market can stand and work backwards to find out whether you have a profitable product or one that will fail because it is too dear. Naturally a thorough understanding of production costs is necessary particularly when marginal markets are concerned.

Drum winders have now been built to attain depths of 3000 m and more in a single lift in accordance with the South African Code of Practice SABS 0294, which was introduced at the time of the last hoisting conference in 2000. Since then, this code has not only been followed for several winders in South Africa but was also followed in deep mines in Canada. Design of winders and their braking systems are described in the paper. Koepe winders are in use for high payloads of up to 50 t and to hoisting depths of around 2100 m. As known, the stress range of the hoisting ropes is the key parameter for rope fatigue. However, as per the SABS Code of Practice 0294, relying on static design is not the answer to the question of where the limits are for Koepe installation. The paper describes factors that are recognised to have influence in rope life and suggests definition of new design criteria for friction winders in order to get viable solutions for high-capacity hoisting from deep mines similar to drum hoisting.

The copper deposits at Pernatty Lagoon are predominately djurleite-digenite bodies beneath the permanent water table, and chrysocolla-atacamite-malachite above the permanent water table. The minerals havebeen deposited as sheets, lobes, and pods in zones suggestive of permeability channels or permeability basius with respect to groundwater circulation.Pyrite is deposited in the form of framboids, which reflects its biogenic origin. Copper-iron sulphides deposit by replacement of pre-existent pyrite, and rarely by direct deposition. The latter mode of formation results in complex crustification bandings of chalcopyrite, bornite, sulphur rich bornites, digenite, and blue remaining covellites. The copper-iron sulphides appear to reequilibrate under constrained oxidation, resulting in an iron depletion and associated copper enrichment, the final product of which is a djurleite-digenite assemblage and associated with goethite. Where copper mineralization/ host rock relationships have rendered the rocks entirely impermeable to post ore groundwater movement, then the copper-iron sulphides are preserved as the ore assemblages.Minor and trace minerals observed include sphalerite, carrollite, galena, wittichenite, and possibly tetrahedrite in the primary ores. In the oxidized ores cllprite, tenorite, and trace brochantite have been found.

A substitute for rutile can be produced by leaching natural or pre-treated ilmenite in hydrochloric acid. Ilmenite in its natural form is an extraordinarily inactive mineral from which the selective removal of iron is rather difficult. The reactivity of ilmenite so that it can be leached with dilute hydro- chloric acid (=2O% w/w) can be enhanced by pre-treatment steps of oxidation and re- duction. The temperatures at which oxidation and reduction are carried out have an effect on both the kinetics of these steps and the leaching kinetics and optimum temperatures for oxidation and reduction are 950 and 850¦C respectively. The mechanism of leaching of iron from pretreated ilmenite and the effects of rate of agitation, temperature, acid con- centration and addition of ferrous chloride to hydrochloric acid on leaching kinetics and production of fines are discussed in the paper.

Quite apart from economic considerations, the following performance parameters must be considered when selecting an explosive for a particular blasting operation. 1. total energy yield/kg, and more particularly, strain energy/kg and bubble energy/kg of charge 2. charge weight/m of blasthole 3. sensitivity of the charge 4. water resistance of the charge The effective division of an explosive's total energy into strain energy (SE) and bubble energy (BE) is explained as is the influence of each energy component on blast results. Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. Research conducted into backfill drainage at Mount Isa Mines since 1992 is described. Piping in draining backfilled stopes has been the primary cause of bulkhead failures and emphasis is placed on research into the piping mechanism. Laboratory and in situ tests aimed at understanding the piping mechanism have been conducted and the results are presented. A case history of piping in a draining bench stope fill mass is described and a technique for reducing the potential for bulkhead failures in bench stopes is presented. Hydraulic fill is produced by standard cycloning of tailings and the overflow (reject material) is sent to thickeners prior to placement in the tailings dams. Research into the partial introduction of thickener underflow into the backfill system and its influence on backfill drainage is also described.

The Ore Reserve/Exploration System implemented at Mount Isa for M.I.M. Holdings Limited is a comprehensive computer system designed to process assay, geological, structural and survey data input via special purpose logging sheets from daily activities at Isa Mine, Hilton Mine and various Carpentaria Exploration Company prospects. The system performs two basic functions; (1) data acquisition, validation and file maintenance to prepare the data for retrieval, and (2) generation of routine and optional reports. The types of reports available range from masterfile detail printouts and retrieval of data by key items to survey computations, structural analyses, cutoff calculations, statistical analyses and ore reserve calculations by the polygonal, inverse square or moving average techniques. The use of various optional reports available through the system is illustrated by several examples, and planned future development is discussed.

Using a typical small logging instrument (Neltronic KPD), a natural gamma reference section for part of the Brockman Iron Formation and part of the Mt. McRae Shale has been established in the Newman area. This is compared with the stratigraphic type section of Trendall and Blockley (1968). Folding and faulting are recognised using natural gamma logs. Because of the confidence with which stratigraphic horizons can be identified, less expenditure on diamond and percussion drilling is required to confirm stratigraphic position. Using natural gamma logs as stratigraphic control the apparent thinning of the Banded Iron Formation during iron enrichment is Demonstrated.

A continuous casting machine, of the Concast curved mould design casting billets in four strands, was commissioned at the Newcastle Works of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., in November, 1967. Quality assessment of early casts from this plant indicated that steel cleanliness was sometimes inferior to that of equival- ent ingot cast steel. Extensive trials to develop a modified deoxidation technique were not successful in improving clean- liness to the desired level. A "contra-flow" gas shroud, to cover the steel stream between the tundish and the mould, was developed, and proved successful in achieving the required levels of product cleanliness. The inclusion content of six grades of steel ranging in carbon content from 0.10 to 0.70 per cent is examined, and an attempt is made to explain theoretically some of the results obtained.

Overburden removal, mining and reclamation are now accepted as the basic operational steps involved in the winning of coal by open cut methods. To attain the lowest operational cost, the recontouring and revegetation of spoilpiles must be planned concurrently with the planning of overburden removal and mining. The earthworks associated with reclamation work on spoilpiles often account for 75 - 90 per cent of total reclamation costs. Experience at Callide Mine has shown that the way that spoilpiles are contoured does influence water retention and can reduce erosion from rainfall run-off. However, provided the recontoured slopes meet'Mines Department specifications, the quality of reclamation work is judged not by the quality of the earthworks but by the plant regrowth on the reshaped surface. Thus it is the quality of the revegetation which is of prime importance. For vegetation to be successful, time must be spent on planned research into methods of overcoming plant nutrient deficiencies and selection of suitable grass and tree species. It is standard practice in geotechnical studies for mine design to drill a series of inclined oriented boreholes into the proposed pit walls. However, this investigation tool is often used without an adequate understanding of the inherent shortcomings in the method and the many potential sources of error. Of the more commonly used orientation methods in Australia the clay imprint technique is probably the most reliable. Contoured stereographic plots of oriented core data are frequently characterised by diverse pole distributions and low concentration maximums compared with line mapping data. Common sources of error producing these poor results are misinterpretation of orientation marks or imprints, inaccurate marking of the reference line, errors in the structural measurement of the defects, lack of continuity information and blind zones sub-parallel to the borehole direction which correction methods frequently do not fix. Line mapping is the preferred method of structural data collection due to the lower overall cost, availability of continuity information and higher accuracy. The projectability of field mapping data to final wall positions can be assessed with a good understanding of the regional geology and local structural patterns. Where field mapping is not possible due to a thick regolith cover, core orientation should be carried out by experienced personnel to minimise the many potential errors.A series of case studies are presented which compare oriented core with mapping and highlight the inherent problems with the technique.

Being inclined to metaphors, one could be forgiven to think that politicians act this verb and captain the Nation's ship into some definite course. In the case of at least the mineral resources industry, it seems that there are not many James Cook followers in our parliaments: Australia's approach to mineral and energy policy is often chaotic - witness the 1935 to 1961 ban on iron ore export-ing which prevented the development of a significant steel industry at time when the World was hungry for this metal, just to mention one amongst many other examples.The follies of Australia's mineral policies are well il-lustrated in the case of uranium mining. Although Australia had the Western World's largest economic reserves of uranium, it is onlythefifth producing nation and its uranium potential is largely unrealised. At the root of this situation are the interventionist attitudes and policies of successive Federal Governments which for more than four decades distorted the Investment decision and, in more recent times. discouraaed investment.

Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.
