The Mount Gordon operation, consisting of the Esperanza open cut mine and the unique Mount Gordon Ferric Leach processing plant, is operated by Western Metals Copper Ltd at Mount Gordon, 125 km north east of Mt Isa. The processing plant treats predominantly the secondary copper sulphide minerals, chalcocite and covellite. The gangue consists of massive pyrite and a range of silicified siltstones. The processing plant utilises a conventional single stage SAG/cyclone milling circuit, followed by low-temperature/low-pressure autoclave oxidation to produce copper in solution. The pregnant leach solution is treated via conventional SX/EW technology to produce copper cathode. Currently the plant is operating at a nominal production rate of 48 500 tpa copper. The Mount Gordon Ferric Leach technology is the worlds first integrated pressure leach/SX/EW process to be used to treat copper sulphides on a full plant scale. In the last six months, July to December 2001, the plant has emerged from a two-year postcommissioning phase to achieve steady state operation. This has been characterised by high plant availability and consistent production performance in excess of the name plate capacity of 45 000 tonnes. Production rates will continue to increase over the next 12 months to over 50 000 tpa via a planned process of incremental improvements. The pressure leach circuit has consistently achieved availabilities exceeding 95 per cent over the past 18 months. Notwithstanding this, the leach circuit still has a much greater requirement for planned maintenance than SX/EW. For much of the Mount Gordon processing plantÆs operating life, the leaching process has constrained production. Recent developments arising from detailed mass and energy balance modelling have now significantly improved leach capability, resulting in the plant bottleneck being shifted to electrowinning. In order to balance the capabilities of the two circuits however, the surge capacity between leach and SX/EW was increased substantially. This effectively de-coupled the higher capability but lower availability leach circuit from the lower capability but higher availability SX/EW circuit. As a result, electrowinning utilisation has increased to in excess of 98 per cent, which is reflected in a higher overall plant throughput.

The stratigraphy of the Singleton Coal Measures is reviewed and a revised stratigrapixy which has been ratified by the N.S.W. Standing Committee for Coalfield geology is nominated and defined by a selected type section. Withir the type section the occurrence of repetitive phases are illustrated and described. Coal. Measure units within the Singleton Coal Mean sures, termed the Wollombi and Wittingham Coal Measures respectively, are correlated with the Newcastle and Tomago Coal Measures. In formal nomenclature the Singleton Coal Measures are designated the Singleton Super Group. The major depositional cycles within the Coal Mea- sures are outlined together with those lesser phases within the Coal bearing sequences that influence the mining conditions likely to be encountered. Both tectonic and sedimentary features of the Singleton Coal Measures are considered and the localized post depositional effects on the coal seams and roof strata in- duced by differential, compactions are emphar Sized.

Bougainville's copper mine is located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville. A high grade copper concentrate is produced for sale to overseas customers. Production planning which was originally based on pilot plant data has developed progressively since commissioning of the concentrator in 1972. Pilot plant data and mine sampling have been supplanted by the correlation of concentrator performance with ore sources, as the basis for short term planning. The influence of accurate sampling is reflected in 1. hourly shift control, 2. the daily milling statement, 3. the prediction of the characteristics of ore from various mine locations, 4. production reconciliation, and 5. the control of copper losses. The mechanical and electrical failures of the original sampling system emphasized the need for a reliable, automatic sampling facility. The development of a pneumatic drive mechanism, which has now been fully field tested, was undertaken.

Since early 1971 Western Titanium N.L. has been operating an ilmenite upgrading plant on a commercial basis at Capel, Western Australia. In their process ilmenite is pre- oxidized, then reduced in a rotary kiln to a mixture of metallic iron and titanium oxides. The iron is leached out by accelerated rusting in aerated water, leaving a product with titanium content, expressed as Ti02, of about 92%. Samples from different stages of the up- grading process, representing operations over the last two years, have been studied in detail by X-ray diffraction methods, and the sequences of phases and reactions occurring have been determined. Quantitative X-ray studies showed the ilmenite feed materials to consist of a mixture of ilmenite and pseudo- rutile. Pre-oxidation of the ilmenite at =1000¦C leads to the formation of rutile plus a Fe2TiO5-FeTi205-Mn2TiO5 solid solution. The final reduction product consisted of a mixture of metallic iron, reduced rutile and a FeTi05-MnTi205-Ti305 solid solution. The relative amounts of these reduction products were very sensitive to the initial concentra- tions of the minor constituents manganese and magnesium. The effects of variation of ilmenite feed rate, reducing atmosphere,- reduction temperature and controlled addition of magnesium were also studied.

To obtain the best economic results in treating the comparatively high-grade ore of the Kalgurli Mine a good roast is essential, and the effort of this paper will be to briefly describe the plant and the conditions prevailing in roasting, which, on an output of about 360 tons daily, subsequently enable an average extraction of slightly over 94% of the gold to be maintained.The percentage of sulphur in the ore varies between 2'5 and 3'5, the lower figure existing when treating oxidized ore. The average gold value is 13 dwt; this occurs chiefly as sylvanite, containing .a lower percentage of silver than is usually present in that mineral. One ore body in the mine contains hessite (Ag2Te) in considerable quantity, associated with gold telluride, and when ore from this stope is being treated the silver contents rise to as high as 20 dwt, but the usual amount is about 9 dwt. per ton, of which only a small proportion is extracted. Other metallic minerals, in addition to pyrite, occurring more or less commonly, are arsenopyrite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, and the tellurides calaverite (AuTez)and coloradoite HgzTe3). A small proportion only of the value occurs as free gold.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (IMR) separators.The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

The direct smelting of zinc sulfide con- centrates has been investigated by an extensive series of computer-based thermodynamic equili- brium calculations. The study covers both pure 7.n-S-O-C-N systems and practical concentrate- coal-air-flux systems. It is shown that for a zinc concentrate containing iron and lead sul- tide impurities, a 97% yield of zinc vapour with autogenous operation can be obtained under carefully optimized conditions. The possible integration of this process with existing zinc condensation and recovery processes is Discussed.

And might I add a special welcome to Lady Mawby and Lady Fisher and to Sir George's only son, Peter, who with his wife, Betty and one of Sir George's three daughters, Helen, are present this evening, and also to Sir Maurice's son, Colin, and Colin's wife, Jay, also in our company.The family presence must surely be a great source of pleasure and satisfaction to all those so intimately concerned.It is hardly necessary for me to state the sole and only reason for our presence here tonight, which is to confer on Sir George Fisher and Sir Maurice Mawby Honorary Membership of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and at the same time to acknowledge two people who have rendered great service to the mining industry, albeit tinged with sadness to all of us in the knowledge that from now on their influence may diminish. It is now my pleasure to introduce, although that is hardly necessary, Sir Maurice Mawby, the second member of the duo we honour here this evening, and whose contribution to the mining industry is also beyond assessment.

Hydrocyclones have widespread use as classifiers in applications such as mine fill preparation and coal preparation. A fundamental conflict often exists between recovery of all of the valuable material and maintaining the quality of the product. This conflict is a result of a portion of the feed material passing through the cyclone, effectively without undergoing any classification. This paper describes an investigation, undertaken as an undergraduate project in mining engineering at the University of NSW (Brook, 1994), into aspects of cyclones in which supplementary water injection is used in an attempt to reduce the amount of misplaced fine material reporting to the coarse product and hence improve the overall classification efficiency. In particular, the study concentrated on the effects of different modes of water injection. Two methods of introducing wash water into the cyclone body were investigated. A series of tests were performed on a laboratory hydrocyclone having provision for radial water injection at different levels through small orifices in the wall of the conical section, and a preliminary study was made of the performance of a novel cyclone in which the conical section had walls of a permeable polyethylene, permitting a uniform introduction of wash water over the entire surface.

The treatment of nickel ores and concentrates and the subsequent processing to recover separate products of nickel and cobalt is one of the major interests at present in the mining industry. The increasing demand for nickel, and more recently also cobalt, has led to increased exploration for ore sources. Major discoveries have resulted in Canada and Australia. These deposits, as well as others already known, are presently being developed and the process technology tested and evaluated for applicability to the different mineralogical types - mainly sulphide, arsenide and oxide laterites. Concentrates may be treated by either hydro- or pyrometallurgical processes, while the nickel laterites are best suited to hydrometallurgical processing. However, if hydrometallurgy is used, once the ore or concentrate is leached the resultant solutions are then amenable to similar separation technologies for purification and recovery of high purity nickel and cobalt products. Solvent extraction, together with other separation processes such as precipitation, can produce high purity solutions of nickel and cobalt. The final products of these solutions may be nickel and cobalt cathodes, metal powders precipitates or salts, depending on the final process of electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, precipitation, or crystallisation Respectively.

In case of NATM, mechanical cutting is desirable in view of the original purpose of not spoiling natural ground. As typical tunnelling machines, there are two (2) kinds available: one is "Full Face Excavator" known as TBM (tunnel boring machine), and the other is "Roadheader" known as Part Face Excavator. By the use of the former, accurate profile cut is made possible, but there is a limit in the shape of a cutting section. By the use of the latter, cutting of various sections is made possible, but in order to cut a section economically and accurately, operators are required to have a high level of skill. In this text, we introduce Automatic Controlled Profile Cutting System (hereafter "ACPC" System) developed as a roadheader.

The use of monitors to assess equipment performance is carried out on a routine basis in many industries. The benefits gained through process control in knowing exactly how the equipment is working far outweigh the initial capital costs of the monitor. In the mining industry several dragline monitors have been developed and installed on equipment through out the world, but to date none has been fully accepted by the industry. This paper describes the use of a sophisticated monitoring system which incorporates an onboard processor to assess both dragline and blast performance. The results of a case study are presented and an indication of the potential of the monitoring system to optimise mine production is given.

Compositional geostatistics is an approach developed to ensure that the constant sum constraint induced by geochemical iron ore analysis is respected in estimation and simulation. Jack-knifing and cross-validation were used within this framework to compare the results from ordinary cokriging of the additive log ratio (alr) variables with those from conventional ordinary cokriging. Two methods were used to back-transform the alr estimates: the crude additive generalised logistic back transformation and numerical integration via Gauss-Hermite quadrature. Previous work on a blasthole data set from a Yilgarn iron ore mine showed promising results, with the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method returning results comparable to ordinary cokriging from the point of view of bias, but superior in that the constant sum constraint imposed by geochemistry of the data was honoured. Other practitioners have noted that the linear interpolation of non-linear log ratio transformations will result in biased results, and that this bias can be masked in a (grade control) setting where the spatial density is high. To test this assertion, the methodology has been extended to successively lower spatial density data sets. The results and applicability to routine iron estimation are discussed.CITATION:Ward, C and Mueller, U, 2013. Working capital is best described as money that must be supplied from a company's treasury to buy inventories for raw materials and finished products and to provide credit to customers who have not yet paid for delivered products. Working Capital requirements for resource projects are to a large extent, dependent on specific characteristics of the projects concerned. Important variables are the nature of the project and speed with which sales can be realised. The project's location is also important as this will influence inventory levels. Working capital requirements have a time profile, the present value of which can represent a significant portion of a projects overall capital needs. A significant component of a project's working capital is not readily recoverable or able to be reassigned should the project fail or be deferred.

The Phoenix mine is one of NewmontÆs open-pit operations located in Nevada. Mining started in 2005, with the mine producing gold, copper and silver. The mine life is about 20 years. The gold grade estimation uses the Newmont in-house indicator kriging approach to handle the high variability in drill hole composite grades and support mining selectivity. Each block contains up to 200 subblocks with different gold grades. A flotation mill is designed to process oxide and sulfide ores, recovering gold, copper, and silver. An additional copper leach process is currently under study to process low gold and high copper oxide material with low copper recovery in the mill. The metallurgical recoveries and processing costs are dependent on many variables including rock formation, metallurgical domain, cyanide soluble copper and sulfide contents. This paper describes the Newmont in-house indicator kriging procedures and the revenue based mine planning software system implemented at Phoenix mine to address the complexity resulting from multi-process, multi-metal and indicator kriging model.

This opportunity to present a few thoughts on the question of professional education and training comes at a most appropriate time. In Britain, a great deal of energy is being expended in this, so-called, post-Finniston era, to create a new look for the status of engineers and engineering by the Engineering Council. Naturally, the tune and the tempo are being called by the big institutions which essentially serve the manufacturing industries. However, the Engineering Council in Great Britain also includes the mining and processing institutions such as the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (IMM) and so there is a chance - if it is taken - for us to contribute to the debate and the determinations that emanate from it. The IMM, of course, caters for the professional status of those engaged in the mining and minerals industries and includes many who do not see themselves as engineers. Nevertheless, the debate is important to these other groups whose livelihood is inextricably bound up with those who are engineers and there are many facets of the engineering policies being shaped that will, I am sure, eventually be enshrined in the requirements for professional status across all the various disciplines in our industry.

The Clermont Goldfield, from which about 300,000 oz of bullion have been extracted, was one of the major gold producers in Queensland. This paper is derived from a systematic study of the mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotope geochemistry of the deposit, based on detailed field work and logging of 57 reverse-circulation percussion drilling holes at the Black Ridge Gold Deposit (Fig 1), aimed at addressing the long debated question of gold-ore genesis at Clermont, i.e., whether it is of fossil placer or hydrothermal origin.Detailed petrologic and mineralogical studies indicate the hydrothermal alteration at Black Ridge is dominated by extensive siderite (+rhodochrosite-ankerite) veinlets and stockworks, which are concentrated along the deformed unconformity between the Anakie Metamorphics and basal conglomerates of the early Permian Blair Athol Coal Measures. Siderite alteration is also moderately developed in all other rock units represented at Black Ridge, including the Tertiary basalt. Weak to moderate phyllosilicate alteration is common throughout the deposit, including chlorite-sericite along the shear zone of the unconformity, and sericite-clay in the conglomerates. A sulphide-oxides zonation also has occurred, including pyrite below the unconformity, (pyrite)-chalcopyrite-marcasite-(hematite) along the deformed unconformity, and marcasite (hematite, pyrite) in the conglomerates.

The Banda arc, a U-shaped orogenic belt which separates oceanic crust of the Banda Sea from continental crust underlying the Australian- New Guinea shelf, has been interpreted to mark the convergent boundary between the northward-moving Indian Ocean- Australian plate and the Southeast Asian plate (Hamilton, 1979; von der Borch, 1979; Bowin et al., 1980). East of the island of Sumba (Fig. 1), the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean has been completely subducted and Australian crust is now thrust under the Banda arc. Controversy has centered over the interpretation of the Timor trough as the surface location of subduction and the significance of the Savu Sea between Timor and Flores as either a forearc basin or the continuation of the Java trench (Karig et al., 1987). Two concentric island ridges, called the inner and outer Banda arcs (Hamilton, 1979), separate Australian continental crust from the oceanic crust of the Banda Sea (von der Borch, 1979) (Fig. 1). The inner arc is a typical volcanic island arc composed of calc-alkalic volcanic rocks of Neogene age, while older (Permian and younger) complexly deformed sedimentary and metamorphic rocks make up the outer arc. Timor is the largest and most extensively studied island of the outer arc and is separated from the inner arc by the Savu Sea. The triangular-shaped Savu Sea appears to be a complex forearc basin divided by a series of buried basement ridges (Karig et al., 1987). Cobalt is principally produced by hydrometallurgical means from the copper-cobalt ores of Zambia and Zaire. In addition cobalt is commonly found in minor quantities in association with nickel and copper-nickel orebodies. Generally the level of cobalt common to these latter orebodies does not warrant separate processing unless the metal price reaches levels last achieved in 1979 and 1980. For pyrometallurgical processing the distribution of cobalt and the factors which affect the distribution of cobalt between matte and slag are not well understood. A limited amount of fundamental research has been completed on cobalt distribution both for simple oxide and matte systems. The paper briefly reviews the relevant literature on theoretical aspects of cobalt distribution between metal and slag and the deportment of cobalt in sulphide smelting circuits. The deportment of cobalt in the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter circuit is critically analysed and areas where recovery improvements may be achieved are highlighted.
