The Chang Jiang Tunnel and Bridge Project, when completed, will provide a fixed link between ShanghaiÆs rapidly developing Pudong District and Chong Ming Island, situated in the Yangtze River delta. The link includes 7.5 km of bored tunnel from the Pudong to the intermediate Changxing Island from where the link comprises viaduct and a cable stayed bridge. The bored section comprises twin 13.7 m internal diameter segmentally lined three-lane highway tunnels. At its deepest point the tunnel will be 55 m below the river. Cross passages will link the two bores for passenger evacuation. Tunnel boring commenced in October 2006 and is scheduled for completion in mid-2009. The paper describes the key features of the design and construction of the bored tunnel by two 14.53 m diameter slurry TBMs and eight cross passages using ground freezing techniques in alluvial sediments. A decision to include light rail below the road deck was taken after the completion of the detailed design. This posed a number of design challenges including passenger evacuation to the road deck, and the redesign of the low point sumps. The various options considered are discussed together with those adopted for construction.

This paper will examine the prospects for Queensland's non-fuel mineral industries as we approach the 21st century. The opportunity for growth is unprecedented. Exploitation of recent discoveries, proposals and developments in downstream processing are predicted to contribute to a doubling of the State's mineral exports to around $10 billion by the year 2000. In 1995 - 96 the value of Queensland's mineral production was $6 billion, comprising $1892 million metallic minerals, $127 million non-metallic minerals and $4 025 million total fuel minerals. For many years Queensland has been among the world's major producers of copper, silver, lead, zinc, bauxite and mineral sands. Recently Queensland has become an important producer of magnesia. Queensland's ability to compete results from its location close to rapidly developing Asian markets, the diversity of its major minerals and an increasing ability to add value to the resources base using competitively priced energy. Northwest Queensland is one of the richest base metal provinces on earth following the recent discovery of five world-class orebodies. Of these deposits, Osborne (copper-gold) has commenced production and Cannington (silver-lead-zinc) and Ernest Henry (copper-gold) are scheduled to be developed by 1997. Century Zinc Limited and the Queensland Government are negotiating with native title claimants on the development of Century (zinc-lead-silver). Expansion is in progress at the Mount Isa copper mine (renamed the Enterprise) and copper smelter and a high analysis fertiliser project may be developed based on Phosphate Hill. Korea Zinc Company Limited has reached agreement to construct and operate a 350 000 Mtpa zinc smelter/refinery near Townsville. There are future expansion prospects for the vertically integrated major industrial mineral operations based on Weipa bauxite and Kunwarara magnesite. Upgrading of the Boyne Island aluminium smelter will require a doubling of alumina consumption. Downstream processing options for Kunwarara magnesite are being investigated and are expected to lead to increases in production and the manufacture of a range of value-added products. At the Yabulu refinery near Townsville, nickel and cobalt production using imported ore is to be increased and a commercial cobalt plant is to be built. Additional opportunities for further processing and manufacturing are associated with proposed new mines at Ely (bauxite), Skardon River (kaolin) and Goondicum (ilmenite). Recently discovered resources of zeolite and perlite also offer exciting development possibilities. Other manufacturing opportunities such as glass and ceramics based on local and plentiful clay and silica sand could replace imports. Silica sand at Cape Flattery is currently exported and production is expected to double.

Mineralisation in alluvial diamond or vein gold deposits is often hosted in trapping mechanisms. For instance, diamonds are nested in bedrock depressions such as gullies and potholes which were carved out by the sea long before the diamond deposition took place. Similarly, gold mineralisation can precipitate in the necks of a boudinage structure. In such deposits, the spatial distribution of the mineralisation is governed by the mutual arrangement of the trapsites and by the grade variations within each trapsite. Reliable estimates can be obtained only if they rest on a proper knowledge of both degrees of variability. This creates a challenging sampling problem, as during the exploration phase it is important to have a good global mean estimate to enable decision making towards the future. A similar problem occurs for local estimates at a later stage of development. To understand and manage the sampling for global means, specific sampling procedures are required based on an appropriate choice of sample support size and spacing. Estimates from such sampling campaigns should be unbiased, and the less variability they display, the better the sampling parameters. The performance and impact of sampling parameters are tested and compared on different simulated deposits.

"The mine geologist’s role in classifying ore from waste during grade control represents a critical link in the mining value chain. Any improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate (thus reduction in misclassification) which can be delivered by the mine geologist represents a value proposition. Improvement achieved without additional operating cost (for example extra drilling and sampling) will directly and immediately add value to the mining operation and therefore clearly must be pursued. Such improvement may be leveraged from existing resource drilling data which are typically less numerous but better quality than the grade control data. They are usually excluded from grade control estimates (termed the ‘base case’ approach here) because of the differences in quality.Various specialised geostatistical tools are available to account for differences in precision and accuracy between data sources during spatial estimation. This paper uses a conditional simulation (CS) case study to assess the benefit of integrating resource data into grade control estimates through ordinary kriging (OK) of pooled data sets, cokriging (CK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME) when the grade control data are:unbiased but increasingly imprecisebiased and increasingly imprecise. The premise assumed is that the resource data are unbiased and precise.The paper demonstrates that, if appropriately handled, resource data may be used to improve grade control estimates and thus improve ore/waste selection success without additional operating cost. Where grade control data are imprecise but unbiased it is recommended to integrate resource data using OKVME. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations and improves the grade control estimation precision compared to the base case; it consequently provides an improvement in the grade control selection success rate. If grade control data are associated with significant bias, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case and consequently improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2014. During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats on average 18 000 tonnes/day of chalcopyrite ore containing typically three per cent copper. The main gangue minerals are iron sulphides (-13 per cent) and non sulphide gangue (-78 per cent). In August, 1991, the comminution flowsheet was changed from a conventional circuit (crusher/rod mill/two stage ball milling) to a modem circuit (fully autogenous grinding/one stage ball milling). The 80 per cent passing size of the flotation feed with the conventional circuit was 125 microns. The Copper Concentrator has two parallel grinding lines, two roughing and scavenging flotation lines, and common cleaning, recleaning and retreatment sections. During the first six weeks of the installation phase, one of the two flotation lines was fed by the conventional grinding circuit and the other by the autogenous grinding circuit. Data from parallel surveys and historical data are used to analyse the rougher/scavenger flotation performance before and after the change. The solid and mineral distributions of the flotation feed, the pulp chemistry and the reagent requirements are compared. The mineral liberation before and after the installation of autogenous grinding is compared on a sized basis using data from the 14 consecutive months before, and the seven months after the change. Liberation was measured using the QEM*SEM(*) instrument. The overall effect of the new grinding circuit on the plant metallurgy is also assessed using the copper recovery values, the dilution of the final concentrate and the distribution of copper losses in the final tailings. The advancement of computer applications in the coal industry is focusing interest on the presentation of washability data by mathematical functions.The normal method of presenting washability data is in the form of five curves, usually filled by eye or by cubic spline functions. It has been shown that coal washability can be characterised by two basic relations: the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship and the instantaneous yield vs relative density relationship. In a new approach to the mathematical modelling of the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship, theapplication of the algorithm to a data set from a mine in central Queensland was successful.

The implementation of a process information management system (PIMS) is to provide a single online, real-time information system. This system provides a unique and completely open view for everyone, based on the key business drivers. It is structured around the three key concepts: process, maintenance and stocks. It combines numerous applications and provides accessibility to common tools and reports, through a web-based user interface, for every one from the floor operator to the General Manager. This æunique and commonÆ view displays raw, online process information that provides a quick health check of the operation at a glance, highlighting areas that require further investigation. The system is based on a hierarchical system of views, from the overview of the whole plant flow sheet to the more detailed operational shop view. It provides a synthetic view between continuous and batch operations, enabling the tracking of each batch produced. The batch view displays the critical batch components, and a comparison with each component of an ideal batch. This enables detailed analysis of each batch to identify areas of improvement. The information system will consist of an online reconciliation of stocks and flow data. This enables focus on the recovery of each process unit on a regular basis. This paper discusses the design strategy for the Process Information Management System, to ensure a unique and open view on the key business drivers is achieved and implemented successfully.

"In the design and operation of mineral processing plants, knowledge of the variability of ore properties and that of the expected metallurgical performance within the orebody is of great importance in order to avoid both production constraints due to inadequate design and less than expected metallurgical performance during operation. Of the many properties that determine the performance of downstream separation processes, such as flotation, gravity separation and leaching etc the liberation characteristics are of primary importance.Current methods of evaluating liberation characteristics of ores such as the use of Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and QEMSCAN techniques are expensive and suffer from the drawback that these tests are performed on comminuted particles at a given grind size and/or samples of product streams. This problem could be overcome by developing predictive models of liberation that can predict the grade distribution of comminuted products at any grind size based on texture of the parent rock. This paper discusses a procedure that has been developed to predict liberation using information obtained from a sample of the parent rock such as drill core, based on Barbery’s liberation models. The required characteristic statistical functions have been evaluated from image analysis techniques using scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the parent rock and narrowly sized comminuted particles. Such information can then be used in a predictive model to predict or explain the variability of metallurgical performance at various grind sizes used in future operating plants. The model will predict not only the valuable mineral liberation but also gangue liberation, which will be useful to those who are looking to remove liberated gangue from comminution circuits.CITATION:Subasinghe, G K N, and Dunne, R, 2016. EnergyAustralia is a state-owned corporation in the state of New South Wales, whose responsibility includes ownership and management of an electricity distribution network. Expansion of the high voltage distribution network in the Sydney central business district (CBD) includes the requirement to run an additional five 132 kV feeders over 1.7 km from south of the CBD to a new 132 kV substation in the northern section of the CBD. A driven tunnel is currently being excavated in Sydney sandstone beneath Darling Harbour to contain the new 132 kV feeders. Tunnel construction methods involve both roadheader and tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. This paper describes the design development of the cable tunnel, discusses the use of a geotechnical baseline report as an integral part of the contract documentation and provides an update of the current construction works.

Based on the mode of occurrence, gold is classified into three categories: microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface-bound gold. Microscopic gold, or visible gold, refers to gold minerals in which Au occurs in a substantial amount, such as native gold and electrum. Submicroscopic gold, ie invisible gold, refers to gold contained in the structure of other minerals (mainly sulfides) in minor to trace amounts. Surface gold is the gold that was adsorbed onto the surface of other minerals during mineralisation and subsequent oxidation or metallurgical processing. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on its extractive metallurgy. Gold process mineralogy helps address problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and troubleshooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimisation. This paper will begin with the classification of gold ores, and will focus on gold mineralogy and how it impacts extractive metallurgy through case studies.

The need to estimate the block size distribution of a jointed rock mass is of great importance in the design of blasting rounds to attain a pre- established fragmentation. Other Geomechanics topics, such as ,hydraulic behavior of rock-masses, as well as the determination of their strength properties, also require the accurate prediction of a rock-mass composition in terms of block size taking in due account the three dimensional interference of joints and other geologic discontinuities. In this paper, a method for computing the block size analysis of a jointed rock mass is described, using as input the common geologic data (dip and strike) of fracture planes existing in a rock bench prior to blasting.

Nickel WestÆs Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter operates three Peirce-Smith converters, each processing 110 tonnes of matte per charge. The vessels are lined with chrome-magnesia refractory with a mouth traditionally constructed from steel liner plates, protected with cast refractory. Mouth refractory is damaged by molten material and the action of cleaning solid buildup off the mouth. Once damage has accumulated, the mouth must be frequently maintained with hot refractory gunning or a mouth leak may occur. Such a leak requires a 32 hour repair period. A converter mouth redesign program was undertaken with the aim of reducing the rate of mouth damage during operation, eliminating mouth leaks and shortening mouth replacement times during vessel rebuild periods. An overview of the redesign process and operational performance is contained herein.

Underground measurements, observations and computed simulations, started a long time ago were concerning the study of : - occurence of typical rockburst, - inducing, stretching of main fractures in the roof of caved longwalls. They made obvious a foundamental phenomenon of inducing of strata fractures involving contact be- tween two layers quite different in their elastic characteristics : coalseam and rocklayer.. The start of primary cracks in maximum abutment zone takes place in the rock near the contact surface. It is opening of crevasses induced by traction stress component resulting of difference of rigidity of both materials and no sliding on in- terface. Occurence and stretching of these crevas- ses are a rheological phenomenon so that the rate of advance and stops of the face influence the distance between the crevasses and the stretching of these ones. The characteristics of these cracks in space and time affect mining conditions. So it is for fractures proximity and expan- sion inducing eventual blocks formation in longwall roofs in front of faces, for depth and delay of road- ways ribsides fracturing, inducing some rockbursts. In longwalls roofs, cracks initiated in front of a face can be either quite close or quite distant each from the other one, according to the depth of crushed coal in front of the face, which af- fects also extension of the cracks.

The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

Henry Walker Eltin (HWE) are the mining contractors for Gloucester Coal at Stratford mine, which is in an environmentally sensitive area in the Avon Valley, NSW, Australia. Normal blasting at Stratford is done in a æstand upÆ or æbox cutÆ mode to suit the truck and shovel operations. Recently an opportunity of doing a throw blast became available when part of a ramp had to be blasted to accommodate changes to the pit design while not damaging the remainder of the ramp. The objective was to maximise throw into the void in order to minimise excavation costs by reducing the amount of overburden to be moved by the excavation fleet. It was necessary that the best result be achieved while staying within the vibration and airblast limits at a neighbouring property and nearby township. Both objectives were achieved through the application of OricaÆs knowledge of blast design, modelling and i-konTM electronic detonators. The i-kon system was used because of its known benefits in cast blasting and environmental control. The i-kon system provides the blaster with much greater accuracy, control and the flexibility to tailor blast designs. It has been found previously to enhance blast throw and provide cleaner high walls (Brent, 2002). The blast was a success, producing a muckpile with a high degree of looseness and consistent fragmentation, with an average throw to final spoil position of 37.5 per cent. This was achieved without any environmental exceedance. In addition, high speed filming showed that the coal edge had remained largely in place, indicating minimal coal loss. The results exceeded the expectations of HWE Stratford and the overall cost savings to HWE Stratford from this blast were recognised to be substantial. Further throw blasting opportunities at Stratford have been followed using the i-kon system to maximise benefits.

The accurate calculation of ore reserves is one of the most important functions under- taken at a potential or operating mine. In recent years there has been a trend towards recommending more and more complex techniques for the calculation of reserves. However these are not always necessary and many improvements could be made by the use of all potential data and a heavier geological input. An ore reserve should be the result of geological not mathe- matical or engineering reasoning. All ore reserve estimates are wrong and the important thing is to.recognise why they-are wrong and to take action to minimize the errors. Geostatistics and other complex mathematical techniques may appear to answer all our needs for ore reserve accuracy but there are many drawbacks, not least of which is the communi- cation gap which may develop between the operator and both management and production Personnel.

For several decades miners have been obliged to maintain a vast supply of sharp steels at the working face to meet the hungry needs of rock-drills. In medium and large size mines this has meant the setting up of an organisation to store steels, to make and sharpen bits with all the complication and skill of forging, hot milling and heat treatment, and to transport sharp and dulled steels to and from the working face with all its labour, wastage, and inconvenience to other mining operations.In a mine with 250 rock-drills in use, a flow of more than 60,000 sharpened steels each month has to be maintained to keep the machines fully employed, so some idea of the magnitude of this problem may be grasped.For a long time it has been apparent that it is mainly the bit itself that wears, and many attempts have been made to reduce the enormity of the problem by providing detachable steel bits which could either be used once and rejected, or sharpened three or four times before rejection.At the same time metallurgists have striven to 'improve the quality of the steel and the heat treatment afforded it so that a bit, readily workable In a normal mine drill-shop, could be produced having a high resistance to wear and fatigue; but, although various alloy steels have been marketed, it is still usual to find many mines relying on a "straight" carbon (0.6 - 0.9% C.) steel for their drill steels.Since 1915 increasing use has been made of tungstencarbide as a cutting implement in the engineering industry.
