As South African gold mines go deeper, and improved and more uniform working condi- tions are required, ever larger amounts of refrigeration are needed. At the same time new and more suitable cooling equipment is becoming available for use with new mining layouts as well as on existing shaft systems. The advent of the large diameter rotor screw compressor has meant that there is now a machine available with great flexibility in performance and construction for efficient underground use. The first installation using this type of machine is described.

The Zhilingtou Au-Ag deposit is situated in the eastern part of the complexly deformed and metamorphosed South China Caledonian Fold Belt. It consists of seven orebodies that are almost exclusively hosted by biotite plagioclase gneiss of the Precambrian Chencai Group. They form an apparent en echelon pattern in both cross-section and level plan. Three different ore types, based on mineralization textures, have been recognized within the Zhilingtou lode. These are Au-Ag-rich quartz veins, Au and Ag-bearing silicified rocks and Au-Ag-containing altered rocks with quartz stockworks. The mineralization is principally composed of electrum, argentite, pyrite and minor sphalerite, galena as well as traces of hessite and chalcopyrite plus a gangue assemblage of quartz, rhodonite, sericite and chlorite. Fluid inclusions related to Au-Ag mineralization yield a wide range of homogenization temperatures from 110 to 447¦C, with two distinctive peak values at 250-300¦C and 350-400¦C respectively. S30Si values of quartz veins and silicification from the three stages of mineralization range from -0.1 to -0.4%o. The mineralization at Zhilingtou is interpreted as forming by recirculated meteoric water extracting ore-forming elements from metamorphic rocks due to Mesozoic volcano-magmatic activity.

The major greenhouse gas emissions from coal combustion are leading certain people to argue for uranium mining and nuclear power to meet these challenges. Although there is considerable rhetoric around promoting nuclear power as 'green' due to its relatively lower greenhouse intensity, a careful study of the data is required to properly underst and the sustainability of uranium mining and nuclear power and whether it can or should have a role in future energy supply scenarios. This paper presents detailed research and analysis on uranium mining, focusing on known economic resources, production, solid waste and water management, pollution issues as well as energy and greenhouse aspects. A particular focus will be on Australia and its operating and prospective uranium mines. Overall, the paper raises fundamental issues concerning the long-term sustainability of uranium mining and nuclear power and documents the greenhouse intensity of uranium production and the nuclear fuel chain.

Mineral processing is an essential component of a mine production chain and it accounts for significant proportion of the production cost. Over the past decade, significant research progress has been made in processing plant efficiency using theoretical, experimental and simulation modelling techniques. However, these studies are limited to process plant system as stand-alone units with no interactions with the mining units. In order to maximise the total mining system efficiency and more accurately simulate the system, the processing plant must be modelled as part of an integrated mining system. This becomes increasingly important in continuous surface mining systems, with limited ore processing capacity. In addition, plant efficiency is roughly estimated with known parameters or with simplistic statistical data, without regards to the stochastic processes governing these parameters, such as processing plant feed introduction. In this paper, a comprehensive model of the ore processing plant system is given and the object-oriented design (OOD) of the system is briefly introduced. The joint operation of ore processing plant system and haulage system is analysed. Numerical modelling is used to analyse the ore processing plant system under different conditions. Analysis of the results show that the optimum plant capacity is 0.7 tons/sec (2520 tons/hour). The results also show that the plant system resources cannot be fully utilised because the production rate is always less than the plant capacity. When plant capacity reaches an optimum value 0.7 tons/sec, the production rate is about 0.64 tons/sec. The underlying stochastic processes associated with plant and mine capacities cause this variability. In order to reduce this variability, there is the need to tightly set tolerances for the function variables.

Economic and technical reasons forced the mining industry all over the world to increase the unit size of mineral processing equipment. in large flotation cells, this development leads to problems in areas of air dispersion and keeping solids in suspension. Outokumpu, an operating mining company, designed and developed a mixing mechanism for large flotation cells at its own concentrators and also studied problems related to tank design. Ideal conditions for flotation can only be achieved if the flow pattern created by the mixing mechanism fits well into the tank configuration and the risk of short circuiting is minimized. In large deep flotation cells, four different zones can be found which improve the behaviour of large cells when compared to small cells. Selectivity is increased and in some cases final concentrate grades can be produced from the rougher cell. The largest units have also been used as final cleaners in some installations. When modernizing old plants by installing fewer larger flotation cells, immediate and substantial savings in power consumption are achieved. Additional power savings are made in pumping costs because of simpler circuit design and decreased circulating loads

The rockbolting method of support is employed widely in several countries in different of mines. Hard rock mines use this method extensively. Soft rock mines, such as coal mines, have employed standing supports (steel sets) as the main method, although some countries such as the U.S.A. and Australia have preferred rockbolting. There is increasing interest in extending the rockbolting method in coal mines. The application of rockbolting techniques in an industry which traditionally has not applied such techniques, has required the development of a systematic design approach. This design approach uses extensive monitoring, to asses the viability of the support system in differing conditions. Currently at a number of new and existing mine developments in the U.K., rockbolting is being successfully applied. Although, inevitably some localised geotechnical problems have been encountered and have needed to be taken into account. The effect of faulting on roadway conditions is discussed in this paper and a design approach has been applied using a numerical analysis method, namely the Finite Element Method. The results presented in the paper serve as a useful guide to roadway support designers, and in particular the role played by different bolts in a range of conditions.

The development of Mount Isa Mines Limited power supply is traced through the history of the mine operations. As would be expected, growth of the power supply system follows closely the increase in mine output, although it will be seen that total kWh. produced per ton milled shows a considerable reduction in later years when the mine output showed a more rapid rate of increase. That this reduction is not more marked is possibly due to the increased community and Shire Council power usage per head of population.INTRODUCTIONThe geographical position of Mount lsa, far from any large regional power supply Authority, dictated the policy that the Company be responsible for the production and suppiy of all power required for the plant operation. The Company also, in November 1937, accepted responsibility for the supply of a part of the power requirements of the township of Mount Isa. The history of power supply to the Mine may be divided into several phases.1. The supply Of lighting and power during the first plant construction period 1929-1931.2. The construction of the first section of the Mines Power Station, comprising Nos. 1 and 2 turbo alternators and boilers.3. The addition of No. 3 turbo alternator and boiler.4. The addition of No. 4 turbo alternator and boiler.5. The addition of No. 5 boiler.6. Upper Cretaceous and Eocene coal measures of the Ohai Coalfield are stratigraphically complex, and coal seam geometry and quality are influenced by washouts and partings resulting from accumulation in a fluvially active environment. Mining efficiency is influenced by these seam discontinuities, which are difficult to predict in the absence of refined paleoenvironmental models of peat accumulation. Petrographic variations between the Upper Cretaceous and Eocene coals indicate differences in the environments of peat accumulation. Seams in the Upper Cretaceous Morley Coal Measures accumulated autochthonously (in situ) in predominantly forest swamps with a high water table. These swamps were occasionally subject to brief floods. No significant changes in swamp vegetation, as indicated by petrography, have been detected between seams. In contrast, the greater content of mineral matter and maceral detritus within the Eocene Beaumont Coal Measure seams indicates hypautochthonous (locally transported) peat accumulation under more frequently flooded conditions. A precursor forest-moor is again indicated but the greater resin content of these coals compared with the Upper Cretaceous examples may suggest a greater contribution from conifers. Integration of coal petrography with investigation of other seam characteristics and coal measure sedimentology is expected to result in a detailed understanding of original depositional controls on peat accumulation. Paleoenvironmental models derived in this way should facilitate prediction of seam geometry, roof and floor conditions, and variations in coal quality, with obvious benefits to exploration and mine development.

Gunpowder Copper Ltd is using in-situ leaching to extract copper from the Mammoth sulphide ore deposit in north-west Queensland. To increase metal recovery, ore is fragmented using conventional underground longhole drilling and blasting techniques. Although the upper levels of the orebody had previously been mined by open cut and underground methods, significant reserves of copper existed around old workings. To safely and economically recover this resource, a decision was made to fire the remaining pillars in the upper part of the mine by a single 1.37 million tonne mass blast in February 1992.This paper records the planning, design, and implementation of the Mammoth mass blast. Geological and geotechnical aspects are summarised, to explain the reasons for such a large blast. Drilling, charging and blast initiation are discussed in detail, to show how standard equipment and products were applied to a unique task.

O.B.E., the third New Zealander to be honoured with Honorary Membership of The Institute. Sir William Hudson and Mr. C. H. Benney were the others.Mr. Bradshaw has been an Affiliate Member of The Institute since the formation of the New Zealand Branch in 1966. Like his friend Matt Benney. Bob Bradshaw is an accountant by training. Last June he retired as senior partner of the firm of chartered accountants, now known as Wilkinson Wilberfoss, with which he served from January 1929.Mr. Bradshaw grew up in New Zealand attending the Terrace School in Wellington, the New Plymouth Boys' High School where he was a boarder, and completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the university now known as the Victoria University of Wellington. He is an elected Fellow of the New Zealand Society of Accountants and an Associate of the United Kingdom Institute of Cost and Works Accountants.

Mining operations require detailed and precise methods and procedures for the optimum selection of ore from waste. A fundamental procedure applied to achieve this selection is accurate sampling. The key parameter to accurate sampling is an understanding of the degree of heterogeneity of the key element contained within a sampling mass. This paper will describe the methods applied for the calculation of the fundamental sampling error and the techniques used to achieve a representative sample in the Fimiston Open Pit, Kalgoorlie.The utilisation of Pierre Gy's sampling theory has optimised the blast hole sample quality and quantity for submission to the assay laboratory. This has resulted in reduced cost and optimised assay reliability in statistical terms. Similarly the analysis of exploration drill holes for resource definition has optimised drilling procedures in terms of the drilling method, sample length and sample quantity.

Vatukoula, the Fijian equivalent of gold rock, is the name of the community embracing the gold mines owned and operated by Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and' Dolphin Mines Ltd. It is situated in the Tavua Goldfields approximately five miles from the northern coast of Viti Levu, the largest island of the Colony of Fiji.The climate is sub-tropical, there being a definite wet and dry season. The wet season is somewhat variable in length but usually extends from December to March, during which time most of the rainfall for the year is recorded.Although the average annual rainfall is 71 in., more than twice this amount has been recorded. Precipitation at the rate of 5 in. per hour is not uncommon and 15 in. of rain has been registered in 24 hours. The mining methods adopted, therefore, had to suit these wet conditions.The occurrence of gold in the Tavua area has been known since 1872, but it was not until 1932 that discoveries were made which led to the formation of the present operating companies. In 1934 the Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd. commenced operations, followed in 1935 by the Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and later by the Fiji Mines Development Ltd., now known as the Dolphin Mines Ltd. The Hamersley Iron ore resources are geologically complex with fluctuations in mineral chemistry. From this resource Hamersley Iron must produce consistently high quality direct shipping products and have the ability to evaluate the effects of changes in demand. In order to achieve these objectives an incremental long term planning technique has been developed. This method reduces the total geological resource statement into a simple, logical sequence of events. A logical sequence of mining increments is defined within individual areas based on a final pit and access system. Increment characteristics are derived manually and from a computer based orebody model. The end product of the technique, an optimum mining schedule, is readily developed from the incremental information. Among its many benefits, this simple technique rapidly provides management with information for policy formulation.

Located in North West Queensland, XstrataÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) is one of the largest underground mines in Australia with annual production exceeding six million tonnes of ore with average copper grades of three per cent. As at 30 June 2006, the Ore Reserve inventory totalled 87 Mt, with annual diamond drilling planned at >40 000 m in order to convert existing resources and test and define exploration targets. The role of the geology department within MICO is to collect, interpret and communicate relevant geological information to ensure the optimal extraction of ore. Routine underground inspections across multiple ore sources are undertaken and the information derived is then distributed to a range of professionals, operational personnel and management. The information is a æreal-timeÆ geological view for the stakeholders. Ongoing data collection and interpretation has developed a strong geological input to all mine planning processes within MICO. This has created strong synergies between mine planning professionals and a throughput benefit has been seen all the way to the concentrator. The MICO geological framework also provides avenues for a geological focus away from short-term production requirements, and as a result significant orebody scale observations and patterns have been realised that have led to an increase in the accuracy of geological and resource models. This has provided practical benefits for short-term scheduling and production, whilst enabling the realisation of long-term benefits that have a strong potential to increase the volume and value of the MICO resource. This paper will discuss the various mine geology contributions at MICO and illustrate some examples where mine geological input from graduate level has added significant value to the MICO business.

The basement contact zone, a major fault structure underlying the copper orebodies at Mount Isa, has a significant influence on orebody extraction. The zone is comprised of a variety of weak, barren lithologies which often create very difficult mining conditions, contribute to stope dilution, and have an adverse effect on concentrator recoveries.The geological characteristics of the contact zone are described, and the importance of timely, accurate geological information emphasized.A variety of mine design strategies have been employed to reduce the impact of the contact zone on orebody extraction. Some of these are discussed, together with current trends in the southern areas where orebody geometry and hence mining methods change markedly.Recent developments in ground support techniques, such as cable dowel reinforcement, have significantly improved ground conditions in the contact zone. An example of the methods employed to improve knowledge of ground behaviour is presented. The trend towards increasing automation and larger equipment requires larger excavations; consequently ground support practices and knowledge of ground behaviour must continue to advance. Rock mechanics investigations will remain an essential part of the mine design process.

In October 1980 the two existing flotation circuits were combined into a single new circuit. This circuit used modern 11.3 m3 flotation cells which replaced 1.4 m3 units. Sometime after this change, a significant deterioration in metallurgical performance occurred. This paper describes the work done to discover the causes of deterioration in performance and actions taken. The program implemented to prevent a future occurrence is also presented. The work included analysis of routine plant data, analysis of surveys to obtain element and mineral flows on both a sized and unsized basis, some quantitative mineralogy, and analysis of some external factors.

The 250 metric tonnes of gold and 360 000 metric tonnes of copper recovered from the Mt Morgan Mine in Central Queensland justify its fame. The mine ceased operation before the advent of three-dimensional computer graphical modelling of orebodies became common practice in mine planning. The Mount Morgan Mine records however remain and are the database for this study. The Mount Morgan project takes ore deposit modelling one step further by examining the relationship between grade distribution within the orebody and key geological features, as a tool for exploration and development.The Mount Morgan gold and copper mineralisation is shown to be strongly lognormally distributed. The deposit has been split into three areas, using geological boundaries, each with different geostatistical characteristics. Important features include: the spatial relationship of near-vertical, high grade shoots with a ring dyke thought to be related to the North Dyke; separation of the high grade eastern stopes from the others along the Andesite Dyke; and lack of concentrated mineralisation along the Slide Fault.Recognition of these features is useful to those currently exploring the Mount Morgan district for similar style deposits, by stressing the importance, or lack thereof, of the geological features.

Arising out of the increasing demands for efficiency in modern ore-dressing operations has grown a requirement for fuller knowledge of the characteristics of the ore treated. In part, this is being met by improved methods of study of the mode of occurrence of the constituent minerals, and of the intricacies of their physical relationships.A typical instance of the need for such a study is the presence of some undesired mineral in a flotation concentrate or tailing, which may be due either to mechanical association through insufficient grinding, or to incomplete separation in the flotation operation.Again, with modern practice in fine grinding, which often requires that from 70% upwards of the ground ore shall pass a 200-mesh screen, it is obviously impossible to obtain data on comparative grinding efficiencies, for instance, unless there is adequate knowledge of the size-composition of the material passing the finest available screen.Studies like these can be made satisfactorily only after size-separation (which may be carried out conveniently by elutriation) and by actual visual examination with the aid of a microscope, and the minute size of the mineral grains to be examined has necessitated the development of a new technique of sizing and microscopic examination.

The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

Over the past seven years, a combination of New Zealand-, Australian- and German-led research voyages using the research vessels Tangaroa, Southern Surveyor, and Sonne respectively, have revolutionised our understanding of the Kermadec-Tonga arc-backarc systems. This convergent margin is the most seismically-active subduction zone system on Earth with convergence rates steadily increasing northwards from the Hikurangi Trench to ~250 mm/year at northern Tonga. In combination with the intra-oceanic setting, factors potentially producing magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal variability in this system include an increase in potentially subductable sediment northwards along-strike, intersection of the Louisville Ridge (hot-spot chain) and Osbourn Trough (paleo-spreading centre) with the arc at ~25¦S, and the possibility of Samoan (hot-spot) plume ingression in the northern Lau Basin. The bulk of the magmatism is submarine; whereas only a few emergent (some transient) volcanic islands exist, about 80 submarine volcanic centres of significant size (>1000 m above surrounding sea floor) are present between White Island in the south to north of Tafahi in Tonga. About 35 per cent of these centres are hydrothermally active. Important petrogenetic features of the volcanic rocks along this arc system are the abundance of rhyolite (some quartz-amphibole-bearing), and the outcrop of primitive olivine-clinopyroxene-phyric basalts in satellite cones of the major edifices. Many of the edifices consist of complex caldera systems. Eruptions from and degradation of these edifices were probably tsunamigenic. Many of the hydrothermal systems developed within the edifices are likely destroyed during the sector collapses which are the characteristic edifice degradation mode. There are three backarc spreading systems along this margin: the Havre Trough, Valu Fa-Eastern Lau Spreading Centre, and the nascent Fonualei Rifts. The latter are particularly notable in having captured the entire suprasubduction zone magmatic flux for a distance of about 150 km, shutting down the adjacent volcanic front arc volcanoes.
