Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. This paper presents an assessment of the status in design and operation of deep level backfill distribution systems by referring to case studies and practical experience. The improvements in design and operation of the systems can largely be attributed to an improved understanding of slurry flow behaviour and a corresponding integrated design approach that includes slurry flow modelling, system design and application of the latest technology. The conclusions summarise the lessons learnt from such case studies and stresses the importance of design reviews and audits of existing systems as a means to ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated in the future.

Exploration requires a lot of skill, technical knowhow, and money; the money is usually less painfully available when provided by a profitable cash flow of an existing organisation that has income against which exploration cost is deductible. Planning the financing for development of a proven resource should begin at the earliest stages even while the mining plan is being formed up. The character of the participants has a bearing on the nature of the financing "package" and the structure that is to be selected for the venture. The security for borrowers in a remote mining resource is no better than the capacity of the participants to bring that resource to profitability in line with the findings of a thorough feasibility study. Taxation considerations related to the structure selected and the timing of the cash flow are of vital importance. Sales contracts have generally been a basic requirement of institutions financing mineral mining projects. Clauses relating to price, price escalation, and currency var- iations, are key factors in those contracts. Initial contracts have generally been required to cover initial overall costs.

During underground mining operations, rock masses are highly subjected to dynamic disturbance caused by blasting, mechanical drilling and earthquakes resulting in strain burst, slabbing and spalling. The dynamic fracture is a significant manifestation of rock failure in deep underground engineering, and it is of great importance to assess the dynamic fracture behaviour of the rock mass under elevated temperature conditions. The correlation between temperature – and loading rate-dependent dynamic fracture mechanism of strain burst is yet to be established. A good understanding of the dynamic fracture behaviour of brittle rock subjected to high-temperature under dynamic loading is required for the prediction of the damage extent during strain burst, and proper design as well as control of the underground rock structures. In this study, dynamic mode I fracture toughness tests are carried out on cracked chevron notched semicircular (CCNSCB) granite specimens to reveal the dynamic fracture characteristics of the brittle rock. For this purpose, a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus is utilised to conduct the dynamic tests with various striker velocities on thermally degraded granite. The dynamic mechanical behaviour of granite after high-temperature treatment is examined and discussed. The dynamic fracture toughness is determined and compared for the specimens exposed to different temperatures at various dynamic impacts. The fracturing processes are recorded by a high-speed camera (HSC), and the crack propagation speeds are estimated by HSC image analysis. In addition, the dynamic fracture process and the coupled effects of temperature and loading rate on the dynamic fracture modes are identified by HSC image analysis. Energy partition characteristics in dynamic fracture of granite are quantitatively investigated.

Gold mineralisation at Wapolu lies within an exposed arcuate zone at the decollement contact between a basement dome of high grade metamorphics and an overlying ophiolite sequence. This contact was originally a thrust fault which has since become a decollement zone for gravity sliding in association with basement doming. Hydrothermal models for the gold mineralisation postulate an epithermal system in which fluids were channelled up the decollement with boiling of those fluids causing hydrothermal brecciation and subsequent gold deposition. The alteration assemblages, fluid inclusion data and geochemistry indicate that the upper levels of the system are exposed.

Underground mechanized excavation in New Zealand has become more commonplace in civil and mining applications during the last three years. At one stage up to seven Dosco Road- header machines were being used on different projects around the country. The Huntly West Mine Drifts inclined at one in four were by far the most severe grade conditions that the machines were subjected to; however, other operations posed their own particular problems for the machines. Two major interrelated factors became evident as soon as the machines commenced at Huntly. These were traction problems on the grade and control of water, particularly on the invert.

The prime aim of the Campbell Mine project was to develop a 3D geological model for the Campbell-Red Lake system to contribute to an exploration model for the region. The base data is composed of over 60 years of geological data covering an area of 16 by 8 km, and from surface down to 1830 m depth. This paper concentrates on the methods used in the GeoSpace system for the processing, integration, display and interpretation of such a large and diverse data set. A block model was developed that recorded the relative frequency of each geological feature within each block. The data input for the block models were based on recoding of the Campbell Mine drilling and channel sample databases into lithological, alteration and structural subsets. The value for each geological characteristic inserted into each block is calculated from all available data that falls within the block. Relative and absolute comparisons of the individual variables provide a targeted outcome from which the blocks are coloured for visual inspection. Different combinations of variable comparisons can be evaluated so that required features are highlighted for interpretation. Blocks are displayed to illuminate the ædominantÆ rock type, according to a formula that may be varied interactively to display the features required by the geologist. This flexibility allows rapid remodelling of lithological distributions, commonly highlighting minor lithological packages not readily visualised in, and interpreted from, drillhole traces alone. The 3D geological model was built from the drillhole datasets and old mine plans utilising standard 3D mining, GIS and database software, with several iterations of plan and sectional interpretation. Near surface bedrock geological interpretations were further constrained by low level aeromagnetic data. The Geospace approach employs an innovative technique for visualisation of the distribution of lithological packages and alteration via block modelling. The method utilises the block model format of data handling as it is considered to be more visible than drilling, flexible enough to incorporate a wide range of data sources, and allows for spatial proximity relationships to be investigated. The method is a simple form of processing large data sets so that results are clearly visible. The calculation is much more rapid than estimation procedures, and does not have any requirement for geostatistical interpretation which is also time consuming. Geospace is not unique to any mine environment software and it is expected to be able to be performed in any system. The proper portrayal of the internal structure of the mineralised body will provide practical input to exploration and mining principally in the areas of resource estimation, exploration vectoring and ore/waste characterisation and may be incorporated with other data to include mine support and mine scheduling.

Over the last 100 years in the Polish mining industry considerable work has been done to assess optimum slurry, develop flexible delivery systems and adjust the fill technology to a wide variety of mining and geological conditions. Sand or industrial mineral waste materials for the backfilling of underground voids are used to control ground movement and surface deformation. This paper discusses various criteria to be considered in the preparation of a fill, including slurry properties, mine infrastructure, mining geometry, placement methods and the purpose of the backfill. This paper presents laboratory and in situ test data on the influence of materials parameters on the slurry flow in a pipeline system, stiffness, permeability, binding time and strength of a backfill, on the distribution of mixture in underground voids or the penetration between roof fall materials.

The flotation circuit handling Peko ore at Peko Mines N.L. was examined in July 1970 with a view to determining simple changes in circuitry or reagents which could improve the grade and recovery of the final copper concentrates. The investigation included sampling over one shift followed by detailed testing of the samples by sizing-assays, sizing-mineralogy and sizing-liberation. Mass balances were carried out over total streams, the component minerals and the copper contents. Some laboratory work was carried out to assess the effect of salinity on flotation. In order to handle the sizing-mineralogy calculations a computer programme was set up. The raw data were corrected for locking factors, then mineral and elemental distributions cal- culated for each screen fraction and the total sample. Calculated assays from grain counting were compared with chemical assays. Recoveries through the size-ranges re- vealed very rapid flotation of copper minerals at sizes below 350 mesh. This pointed to a possible circuit improvement by desliming rougher tailings ahead of the scavenger stage. A strong correlation was found between water in concentrates and gangue recovery for the subsieve sizes. Probabilistic analysis is widely used in slope stability assessment because of its capability to take into account uncertainties associated with geotechnical parameters. There are, however, still many unresolved practical issues to the application of the method. One of these issues is the integration of assessments when multiple sets of fractures are considered for the entire slope. In the present study, this issue is addressed within the framework of Monte Carlo simulation. Probability of failure for pairs of fracture sets are assessed independently and the final assessment of the probability of failure for the entire slope is done using conditional probabilities. Prominent Hill open pit, in particular, the problematic fresh Bulldog shale formation, was used as a case study to test the method proposed. The SWEDGE program of the RocScience software package was used for the analysis.

A device has been developed for modelling the behaviour of coal under conditions which may lead to spontaneous combustion. It is designed to model the behaviour of a stockpile of large mass. The apparatus can test coal samples taken from the flow stream from mine through washing, stockpiling and transportation to the point of utilisation. It tests samples in an as received' condition and so takes into account the effect of aspects such as particle size and moisture content on propensity for spontaneous combustion to occur. Results of the preliminary tests undertaken are given and future applications of the apparatus are Discussed.

The purpose of this work is to determine the equilibrium-state of the aqueous-solution which is produced by the leaching processes, including natural weathering of pyrite minerals. The latter can lead to acid-mine-drainage (AMD). The ferric iron species (Fe3+) resulting from bacteria-catalysed oxidation of ferrous iron (Fe2+), in the presence of water and air, is known to bring about steady-dissolution of minerals chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS), pyrite (FeS2), and so forth. Good-aeration, relatively high-porosity and sufficient bacterial activity tend to promote leaching in waste-rock-dumps. The composition of the aqueous-phase that accumulates in the pore-space (or in open-pits) is of practical interest as it would strongly influence the leaching of both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals. Since the reactions among the various ionic species occur relatively fast, the solution-phase may be regarded as approaching a state of virtual-equilibrium and it is possible to determine by computation the respective concentrations of the many dissolved species. For the Cu-Fe-H-O-S system, these species may include: H+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, HSO4-, SO42-, OH-, CuSO4o, H2O, Fe(OH)+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe(OH)2+, Fe2(OH)24+, Fe(SO4)+, Fe(HSO4)+, Fe(HSO4)2+, and Fe(SO4)2-. The aqueous-system which may be constituted from appropriate mole-quantities of H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, and CuSO4 is in fact the result of various natural processes (reactions) and due respect must be accorded to the extents of these reactions. The present model computes the equilibrium molalities of the foregoing ionic and neutral aqueous species, using the iterative equilibrium constant method that ensures strict-adherence to charge-balance and elemental molar-balance constraints. The dissolving sulfide-minerals (FeS2, CuFeS2) consume Fe2(SO4)3, H2O, and O2 and yield FeSO4, H2SO4, and CuSO4 while the aqueous-phase tends to become progressively acidic (declining pH) reflecting the gradual increase in the extents of sulfide-dissolution reactions. The equilibrium-state of the solution-phase is computed for specific set of values for the extents of respective reactions. The temperature and pressure of the system are 25¦ C (298.15 K) and 101.325 kPa (1.0 atm), respectively. The mica-like minerals such as the biotite [H2K(Mg,Fe)3Al(SiO4)3] tend to consume much of the H2SO4(aq), with the extracted K+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and Al3+ ionic species accumulating in the solution. The precipitation of the jarosites (potassium, hydronium, or ammonium) contributes to the removal of ferric and ferrous species from the solution-phase. In the present work, the emphasis is on predicting the compositions of the aqueous- and condensed-phases with advancing time or increasing æextent of reactionÆ. The results of such calculations are compared to published data on raw AMD (acid-mine-drainage).

The goal of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. De- partment of the Interior, diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and mini- mize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel-powered equipment in under- ground mines. Significant results of research conducted during the last 5 years are briefly described, with references to published reports on specific topics. Topics covered here include brief discussions of a newly completed diesel research laboratory, the effects of a fuel addi- tive on diesel exhaust particulate matter, the effect of diesel engine maintenance on emis- sions, a diesel particulate filter for equipment used in underground metal and nonmetal, and coal mines, and lastly, the prototype hydrogen- powered mine vehicle. These research accomplishments could favor- ably affect the mining industry by reducing the health and safety hazards associated with the use of diesel-powered equipment in underground Mines.

The reliable estimation of ore reserves in mineral sand deposits depends on drilling methods and assay techniques that have been specially developed within the industry. Improvement of these techniques is a continuing process, as variations within and between deposits are highlighted during the actual mining operation. Constant monitoring of metallurgical losses along with mineral production allows comparison of mineral tonnages accounted for by mining, with original calculated reserves. A review of ore reserves in the Jerusalem Creek field from scout drilling in the sixties, through mining in the seventies, shows the progression from understatement prior to mining, to the present when more than two thirds of the reserves have been depleted.

Sheaves are a critical safety component in a winding system and are expected to survive such extreme loading events as rope break. Sheave designs have often been developed and evolved empirically, consequently many existing sheaves are not necessarily subjected to the detailed analyses that are possible using todayÆs design tools. The design philosophy for sheaves is that the rope should be the weakest link in the system so that associated equipment can function safely for any load up to rope break. A number of failure mechanisms must be considered, but buckling is often prominent. During the course of investigating the feasibility of upgrading the hoisting capacity of a winding system, the capacity of all critical components was reviewed. The sheaves in the system were found to have insufficient spoke buckling capacity for the specified rope. A proposal to increase the spoke buckling capacity by connecting spokes together using a simple tie arrangement was evaluated and found ineffective. An alternative tie arrangement concept was developed and evaluated and shown to be adequate. This paper describes the finite element model, analysis approach and results for the original sheave and the two modifications. The contribution of the sheave rim to the total buckling capacity is evaluated. Some practical issues for spoke tie modifications are discussed.

The Fortescue Metals Group story began in 2003 with a vision to establish an infrastructure project that would connect the stranded iron ore deposits of the Pilbara region of Western Australia with the steel mills of Asia. Following exploration successes in the Chichester Ranges using their new exploration model, Fortescue established significant iron ore resources at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek during 2004 and 2005. By May 2006 the definitive feasibility study for mine, rail and port was completed, many of the key government approvals had been obtained, product development and market acceptance were complete and 1.07 Bt of total proved plus probable iron ore reserves were defined to support a 20 year mine life from the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek deposits. Project construction commenced in September 2006 following a successful $3.2 billion capital raising. By April 2008, the mine and processing plant at Cloudbreak were completed along with the Herb Elliott port facility at Port Hedland and 256 km of heavy haul railroad linking the mine with the port. Mining of overburden commenced at Cloudbreak in late 2007 and by 15 May 2008 the first shipment of iron ore had departed for China. In the first 12 months of operation total shipments amounted to 24.6 M wet metric tonnes with weighted mean composition of 58.9 per cent Fe (64.4 per cent Fe calcined), 4.3 per cent SiO2, 2.0 per cent Al2O3 and 0.047 per cent P. Exactly 3.5 years between the Cloudbreak discovery hole and commercial production. The project success depended on many technical breakthroughs including a new exploration model, application of the surface miner as the main mining production unit, design of a new marketable fines product called æRocket FinesÆ, a highly efficient ædesandÆ flow sheet for upgrading of 2.4 per cent alumina run-of-mine to 1.9 per cent alumina Rocket Fines, 40 t axle loads for the heavy haul railway and a high capacity-highly automated port facility.

Much has been written about the fact that most transformation efforts disappoint. This paper addresses factors that should be taken into consideration in planning and implementing transformation programs to ensure success.In 2009, St Barbara commenced a transformation program to address issues of chronic poor quarterly operational performance; financial pressure caused by the unreliable operational performance; and an inability to develop business plans with integrity and to reliably deliver on the plans. As a result of a number of years of disappointing operational performance, St BarbaraÆs culture was not conducive to business success.This paper uses lessons learnt during St BarbaraÆs transformation program to highlight key characteristics of change programs that can generate significant sustainable benefits. While there were many benefits from the transformation program, the most significant impacts of St BarbaraÆs program have been transformation of the companyÆs culture and capability of people as business leaders; the establishment of a business systems framework to guide the design and development of systems; and developing support functions, for example centralised procurement and supply chain, business improvement and technical services.CITATION:Campbell-Cowan, G, 2012. The surface reactivity of underwater deposited, high-sulfide copper mine tailings was evaluated under fresh and saline water cover conditions by measuring the surface and pore water quality as a function of time. The experiments were conducted in aquarium type lysimeters having a shallow, well-aerated water cover up to approximately 0.25 m over the tailings. Natural lake water was used for the fresh water cover and seawater for the saline water cover scenarios. The tailings showed significant surface reactivity and oxidation under both fresh and saline water cover conditions. The surface water quickly became moderately to highly acidic, and surface oxidation of the tailings resulted in increased dissolution and release of sulfates, iron (total), calcium, magnesium, aluminium, manganese, copper, nickel, zinc, lead, cobalt and silicon to the water covers. A moderate to slightly increased loss of total sulfides, including pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, occurred in the tailings surface layer to a very shallow depth. In comparison to the fresh water cover, the complete acidification of the saline water cover was delayed by approximately 30 - 40 days because of its additional available alkalinity. Whereas the rate of surface water acidification and release of aluminium and silicon were moderately reduced under saline water cover conditions in comparison to those for the fresh water cover, the release of calcium, magnesium, iron (total), copper, nickel, lead, zinc, sodium and potassium were enhanced. The mass transfer fluxes for dissolved copper, nickel lead, zinc and iron (total) from the tailings substrate to the surface water cover following surface water acidification were higher by 50 per cent or more in the saline water cover than those in the fresh water cover. This release was also reflected in moderate loss of pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite in the very shallow upper surface layer of the tailings at the tailings-water interface, although the loss of pyrite in the surface layer was less pronounced. In both cases, the dissolution of aluminosilicate minerals moderated, to a certain extent, pH and acidity in the water cover.

The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia, approximately 500 km long by 200 km wide, is recognised globally for its rich endowment of iron ore resources. Two types of bedded iron ore mineralisation are recognised: the Proterozoic hypogene martite-microplaty hematite ores; and the more recent Cenozoic supergene martite-goethite ores. Exploration strategies depend on the style of mineralisation being targeted; however, stratigraphy and structure are fundamental controls on both ore types. Therefore, the ability to visualise the 3D geology of the entire basin is critical for the understanding of iron ore occurrences and their relationship to ore genesis of bedded iron ore mineralisation. However, due to the large size of the basin, generating a 3D geological model of the regional stratigraphy and structure has not been possible, or prioritised, primarily due to software limitations. Recent advances in implicit automated geological modelling presents an ideal opportunity to develop a 3D model of the entire Hamersley Basin. The innovative Loop software was used to model open source geological data (ie geological mapping, outcrop orientation data, and fault data) sourced from the Geological Survey of Western Australia. In addition to generating a 3D geological model, information such as stratigraphic thickness and fault offset information was extracted using the map2loop module and demonstrated its application to exploration targeting. This study demonstrates how a basin-wide 3D geological model was used to conduct a regional structural analysis of the Hamersley Basin. The results of this study provide opportunities for other prospective regions to be rapidly modelled in order to enhance the understanding of the geology and improve exploration targeting.
