The allocation of boggers and trucks at Telfer’s sublevel cave mine is currently assigned by manual techniques, with decision-making primarily dependant on the judgement of the operators and mine control. Field observations indicate that allocation decisions could be improved by establishing a systematic approach to dispatch. An investigation into the current state of technology determined that no currently available solution would provide a tool to make optimal decisions for the Telfer dispatch challenge.In an underground sublevel cave (SLC) environment, the destination decision is fixed and the source is variable, so open pit and block cave solutions are not relevant. Newcrest underwent a development venture with an external vendor to develop a novel production dispatch algorithm and user-friendly software program to make allocation decisions in a systematic way with consideration given for the true complexity of the operation.This new production software, nicknamed Dingo (for Dispatch ‘n’ Go), is a smart way to assist forepersons and mine control operators in their day-to-day roles of planning shifts and allocating trucks and loaders to optimal locations during shifts.CITATION:S Graskoski, 2017. In recent years there has been a major change among mining companies in their mining methods. This has been driven by the need to increase shareholder value and optimising the value from an operation. With this understanding there has been a need for all producers to become more efficient in their mining processes. An analysis of the coal losses at Mount Thorley Operations indicated that the major losses were in the dragline section of the mine due to coal damage from throw blasting. This damage was evident after the removal of the overburden by the dragline.Coal and Allied Mount Thorley Mine in partnership with Orica Explosives developed a process to reduce the coal loss associated with the throw blasting of Mt Thorley. Orica provided its specialised knowledge and experience in the drilling and blasting area and combined this with the local mining knowledge and expertise of Mount Thorley Operations personnel to conduct the project. This partnership reduced coal loss in excess of 50 per cent whilst maintaining targeted dragline productivity.

The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

"Ventilation risks in an underground mine have essentially remained the same for centuries, yet theevidence suggests that there are many coal mines that have failed to adequately control these risks.The conduit for the knowledge learned by previous generations exists in the mining legislation. In an ideal world, mines would not need legislation to tell them what to do; they would resolve the risks to an acceptable level so as to protect the safety of persons in the mines based on the acquired knowledge. There will be some who have been personally aff ected by a mining disaster but for the majority they will be remembered as a vague recollection of an event from long ago. The mining legislation is the repository for the knowledge and outcomes from inquiries of past disasters. The challenge for the current generation, and the generations to come is to appreciate the legislation that exists, so as to not ælearn the hard wayÆ. In reviewing most disasters there is comment or discussion on the adequacy of the legislation, which ultimately results in some amendment to the law. For each person, there is an increasing responsibility to ensure that the same mistakes are not repeated. Understanding the legislation, its history and its purpose is the fi rst step in ensuring thatventilation risks are eff ectively managed. Failing to do this will be disastrous. This paper discussesthe relevance, importance and potential pitfalls of coal mine ventilation regulation."

"Long-term strategic planning at BHP Billiton’s Western Australia Iron Ore business aims for sustainable value maximisation of its large, long-life, low-cost, expandable mineral inventory and supply chain infrastructure. While mine plans are key components of this value equation, this objective requires a whole-of-business approach through comprehensive consideration and optimisation of the full value chain. Only through a system view do we believe that the value proposition of a set of plans is truly optimised.The fundamental considerations include: mineral inventory information, given its intrinsic uncertainty and risk/knowledge horizon a marketing view of future quality premium/discount based on overall market quality load whole of supply chain optimisation on a throughput accounting basis alternative sequences of capital decisions closure costs with significant magnitude of total movement requiring optimisation as part of the plan. In 1983 the New South Wales (NSW) Government began to construct a 35 km freight rail line to provide additional rail capacity to Port Kembla in the Illawarra region, south of Sydney, through a direct connection between the Unanderra to Moss Vale line at Dombarton to the Main South rail line at Maldon in the Southern Highlands. The project area lies within the carefully managed Sydney Water catchment and is also underlain by previous coal mining activities.Construction of the line halted in 1988 prior to its completion after the NSW Government reassessed the demand case and found that the project was not as viable as originally forecast. However, by this stage the line was partially constructed, including the majority of civil earthworks, approach structures to the main river crossings and establishing the portals for the Avon tunnel as a precursor to major tunnelling works.In 2012, the Commonwealth Government funded Transport for NSW to undertake the necessary engineering and environmental preconstruction works. Most importantly here, the 1980s rail link was predicated upon the use of electrically powered locomotives, whereas the locomotive fleet in operation today in NSW is diesel powered. This fact has a significant impact upon the approach and development of the Avon tunnel section, as the diesel powered locomotives combined with the length and grade of the tunnel alignment produces a unique set of conditions requiring specialist engineering design and systems to ensure safe and functional operation of the railway through the tunnel section.Given the above, the Avon tunnel will need to be supported by a ventilation and smoke control design based on the heat rejection from the locomotive consist, consideration of ambient air quality compliance, comparison against in-tunnel air quality goals, and providing safety systems in line with the fire and life safety strategy it requires.This paper explores the current development of both the tunnel civil works responding to the geography, geology, rail functional requirements, as well as the tunnel ventilation systems being revised to suit the diesel locomotives.Further, this paper describes the importance of combining the design outcomes with the procurement methodology in order to achieve the project objectives, a functional outcome and value for money across the project life.CITATION:Baker, T and Bagis, A, 2014. Over the last 20 years the mining industry has played a key role in the further development of many Central Queensland and New South Wales communities. The number of people who are employed by the coal mining industry, the number of transient residents, shift work and the town facilities have all contributed to how the community views the coal mining industry. As the coal mining boom continues and the mining communities continue to grow more emphasis is needed to address the community concerns, specifically the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the coal mining companies may have on these communities. Central Queensland coal mining operations are situated in the Bowen Basin. Many of the towns in the region have been developed specifically for the coal mining industry with 13 - 50 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) of people living in the communities being directly employed by the mines. The introduction of shift work, differing rosters and the mining boom have resulted in considerable changes to these communities with more transient contractors and permanent employees taking up residence outside of these communities. This change, however, has not been as noticeable in the Hunter Valley region. The Hunter Valley, situated in the Sydney Basin has two main mining towns, Singleton and Muswellbrook. Of the 37 173 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) people that reside in the communities 13.8 to 16.5 per cent (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2006) are employed directly by the mines. The Hunter Valley is a large tourist destination due to its many vineyards; this results in a diverse community where mining is not the sole means of employment. Similar to Central Queensland the mining boom has brought more people to the Hunter Valley region, although greater percentages have taken up residence in the communities. The views vary between the two regions on the coal mining industry, specifically on the socio-economic and environmental impacts that the industry may have on the surrounding communities.

The beneficiation potentials of two Indian iron ore slime samples by flotation technique using both cationic and anionic collectors are investigated. The direct and reverse flotation of slimes using oleic acid and dodecylamine as the collector have been studied using both conventional cell and flotation column to upgrade the iron content. The characterisation studies of iron ore slimes indicated that the samples are extremely fine in nature and contain substantial amounts of martite, magnetite, goethite, limonite, kaolinite and quartz beside hematite as the dominant iron mineral phase. The samples on average contain around 52 - 58 per cent Fe, four to seven per cent SiO2 and five to six per cent Al2O3. Taking into account the physico-chemical properties of the slimes, it is attributed that both the samples need to be deslimed by hydrocyclone before flotation. The results of both cell and column studies on sample I showed that a feed containing 57.5 per cent Fe could be upgraded to 65.5 per cent Fe at 50 per cent overall recovery with simultaneous decrease in SiO2 and Al2O3 content to 2.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively by using oleic acid as the collector. In the case of sample II, it has been established that reverse flotation of silica is the better technique to improve both the grade and recovery of iron. Batch flotation studies in cell indicated that a product with 63.1 per cent Fe could be obtained at 40.0 per cent yield with 63.6 per cent iron recovery by the combination of reagents such as gum acacia, sodium hexa meta phosphate and dodecylamine. The performance of column flotation techniques is far superior to that of the cell with respect to both grade and recovery. The concentrates are found to be quite suitable for commercial exploitation as pellet feed.

The selection and design of process options to deliver outcomes consistent with sustainable development requires simultaneous consideration of multiple objectives, within a climate of uncertainty û including the environmental and social aspects of technology management in addition to the technical and economic aspects of such. An issue of particular relevance in primary metal production is the deportment of minor and trace components within orebodies, products and wastes and the implications of such deportment for eco-efficiency û in particular, the long-term environmental impact of solid waste management practices. The identification of opportunities to enhance recovery of valuable by-products and simultaneously improve the environmental acceptability of final waste output requires a clear understanding of the distribution of the relevant ore components, which results from the choice of processing route and unit operation efficiency. This is challenging, given that process streams generated during primary metal production are generally poorly characterised and the behaviour and deportment of trace to minor and trace components is not well understood. This paper demonstrates how current data gaps and inconsistencies can be systematically addressed through the meaningful reconciliation of empirical plant data with a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms and parameters influencing element behaviour and deportment during the formation and subsequent beneficiation of mineral ore deposits. On this basis, quantitative distribution data and a comprehensive and comprehensible inventory of unit process inputs and outputs as a function of ore compositions and processing technology options can be generated, which is consistent with early design stage information requirements, both in terms of detail and accuracy, ie is æfirst-orderÆ in nature. This predictive approach to element distribution during primary metal production provides decision-makers with key information in the early design stages of a project (in terms of developing processes within the context of sustainability), whilst simultaneously guiding further data collection and environmental impact prediction studies.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Halasu porphyry copper belt, located in the East Junggar basin bounded by Chinese Altay to the north and the Tianshan mountains to the south in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is one of the major porphyry copper belts in Xinjiang province, north-west China. Combined with previous studies in this area, the magmatism can be divided into three periods: pre-mineralisation activity of 390 Ma syn-mineralisation activity of 380–370 Ma post-mineralisation activity of 360–330 Ma.Through the comparison of zircon chemistry from ore-bearing and barren syn-mineralisation intrusions, negative correlation was identified between Ti-in-zircon temperatures and oxygen fugacity, corresponding to the fact that late-stage syn-mineralisation granitoids contain high water content, high oxygen fugacity and low temperatures with higher mineralisation potential. In addition, the relative low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, high eHf(t) and eNd(t) values and mantle Pb isotope characteristics in this study support that the magma forming these intrusions was probably derived from juvenile crust generated during subduction-accretionary processes.CITATION:Wu, C and Chen, H, 2015. Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .

An established method exists for the computation of rope lifetimes for shaft hoisting applications in the mining industry. In an earlier study, during the 1990s, an initial comparison of the calculated and actual rope life for various types of hoisting plants showed reasonably good correlation. In the meantime the calculation method has been developed further. The rotation behaviour of the rope during hoisting and the effects of multilayer spooling on drums are now considered in the assessment of expected rope lifetimes. The ability to determine an estimate of rope life in advance is particularly useful for mining companies. Such analysis allows them to predict the effects of rope choice in their particular application and thereby reduce the total cost of rope ownership. Such calculation techniques also allow designers of winding plants to identify aspects of the hoisting configuration that may negatively affect rope life. Often small (low-cost) changes, like increasing the diameter of head sheaves, can result in considerable improvements in rope performance. This paper describes the extended lifetime calculation method and gives further examples of the comparison between actual and calculated rope lives for operational double-drum mine hoists.

The Callie Underground Mine is located in the Tanami Desert 560 km Northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and is currently operated by Newmont Australia Limited with all mining activities carried out by Henry Walker Eltin. Callie was discovered in the region in 1991 with the box cut portal commenced south of the pit in 1995 and underground ore production commenced in 1998, after completion of the profitable Callie Open Pit. Development is currently occurring at depths of over 700 m with the decline currently below the 640 Reduced Level (RL) level (surface RL of 1400) with production haulage from 600 m below the surface. The combination of auto compression, a moderate geothermal gradient of 2¦C/100 m and diesel heat transfer causes the wet bulb temperature of intake air at the bottom of the mine to be typically 5¦C higher than on the surface. Wet Bulb temperatures can be up 5¦C higher again in active areas under secondary ventilation. During the 2002/2003 wet season many activities in the lower levels of the mine were stopped due to miners experiencing adverse heat related symptoms or the temperatures exceeding the Underground Heat Management Procedure stop job criteria of 32¦C wet bulb. To improve the working environment, combat the heat related illness and improve operational efficiency, a temporary 1.8 MW refrigerated cooling plant consisting of three 600 kW modules were installed underground to provide bulk air cooling for the lower levels of the mine during the 2003/2004 wet season. Several studies have been conducted in relation to future ventilation demands at Callie and all came to the conclusion, that some mine cooling will be necessary for Callie to meet the high production and development demands. This paper will describe the ventilation network at the Callie Underground operation focusing on the installation, operation and effectiveness of the temporary underground refrigeration plant.

The study focuses on sulfide oxidation processes in unweathered pyrite-rich mine tailings from a soil-covered impoundment in northern Sweden. To simulate the oxygen-limited conditions in water saturated tailings two long-term column experiments were performed. Results are presented for the first 11 months of the experiments at room temperature. The tailings used in the experiments were of two different grain sizes (one coarse grained, in the range 0.02 - 0.6 mm with a grain surface area of 1.86 m2 g-1, and one fine-grained, in the range 0.0015 - 0.06 mm with a grain surface area of 10.00 m2 g-1) and with slightly different mineralogical composition. The S:Fe molar ratio in the leachates (1.0 - 1.5) indicates either that pyrrhotite is the main iron sulfide undergoing oxidation in our experiments, or, alternatively that the S:Fe molar ratio in the leachate is determined by pyrite weathering in conjunction with other processes releasing iron or immobilising sulfate. However, speciation modelling of the leachates indicates that ferrihydrite was close to saturation, suggesting that a ferric oxyhydroxide may have dissolved/ precipitated during the experimental period, thereby affecting the S:Fe molar ratio. Pyrite oxidation rates obtained from the two column experiments during æsteady-stateÆ were 2.25 + 10-13 and 8.45 + 10-14 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Pyrrhotite oxidation rates, as an alternative, were 2.31 + 10-12 and 1.24 + 10-11 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Natural microbial activity was confirmed in both the tailings and the leachates; therefore, the obtained oxidation rates are not strictly abiotic. It is thus concluded, based on the experimental results, that tailing heterogeneity will result in zones with different oxidation rates, related to their physical and chemical properties.

Mr Chairperson, respected leaders of the mining industry, ladies and gentlemen;   Good morning, Kiora, Nihao.   I am very honoured to give a speech to the 2005 New Zealand minerals conference. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the Ministry of Economic Development to invite me to be part of this important event.   Today, I am going to talk about two themes: a brief introduction of ChinaÆs economic development, including ChinaÆs energy strategy; the good bilateral relations between China and New Zealand, its potential for further development and its relevance to our cooperation in the field of minerals and energy.   It is a well-known story that over the past 27 years, great changes have taken place in China. In 1978 when ChinaÆs reform and opening up just started, its gdp was near to only 150 billion usd dollars. By the year of 2004 it reached to 1.6 trillion usd, an average of yearly growth rate 9.4 per cent.   ChinaÆs great achievements are widely appreciated both in China and abroad. ChinaÆs development has not only improved the living standard of its own people, but also produced a huge market and brought about great opportunities for the world. Since ChinaÆs entry into WTO in 2001, China has imported near to 1.8 trillion usd dollars of goods, averaging a yearly imports of 500 billion usd dollars, creating for other countries and regions more than ten million jobs.   Our prediction is that in the next five years, ChinaÆs imports will be well over three trillion usd dollars. China will continue to serve as one of the leading growth engines for the future world economic development. Now China is on its great strive to achieve the goals of improving living standard for all the Chinese people. We are trying to reach a quadruple gdp of 2000 by the year of 2020, namely to reach gdp four trillion usd, a gdp per capita 3000 usd dollars.

The extractive industries response to community engagement due to social and political pressures in the 1980s and 1990s was the starting point of development leading to the modern function of corporate social responsibility.Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater transparency and responsibility of corporate organisations and who possess greater awareness of the communities they participate in, the mining sector faces another step change in how it approaches and integrates corporate social responsibility, transparency and engagement.Mining is seeking reserves of lower grades, in more sensitive environments and in countries with minimal transparency and governance. Not only are the locations changing but so to the stakeholders to engage with and issues to contend with. An increasingly savvy opposition, including not just the ‘green hippies’ but the Gen-Ys interested in the wider sustainability debate and Baby Boomers moving to life style environments, are now questioning mining’s behaviour and encroachment into ‘their space’. Issues including effect on lifestyle amenity, property value, energy efficiency, social provision; concepts such as ‘doing more with less’, participatory engagement, increasing transparency and balancing economic, environment, cultural and social aspects are becoming the norm.The traditional model of supporting local communities, communicating plans and providing employment, community investment and indigenous support programs is not enough. Our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities and play a role in addressing the global sustainability issues.This paper draws on corporate social responsibility trends, integrated functions and implementation approaches through the application of activities within Newmont operations across Asia Pacific.The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities do not necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

The first 12 m diameter rakeless thickener in the Australian gold mining industry was installed to treat plant tailings at the St Ives gold plant in April 2000. The plant processes approximately 3.2 M tonnes of ore producing about 430 000 oz of gold per annum using conventional crushing, grinding, gravity and carbon in pulp processing methods.The main benefit sought from the thickener was to improve water recovery in the plant and provide water for a 55 000 oz per annum heap leach operation. The thickener design indicated that more than 128 m3/h of overflow water could be returned directly into the plantÆs water circuit, relieving the demand on the borefields. The resultant surplus in the water circuit would then be available for the heap leach project. Based on laboratory and pilot plant scale tests conducted by EIMCO the thickener was designed to handle up to 700 m3/h of tailings slurry (450 tph of solids) with a 40 per cent oxide component in the ore blend. The normal plant throughput is 565 m3/h of slurry (400 tph of solids). Gold mineralisation in most areas at St Ives comprises quartz-sulphide vein and breccia lodes with common albite-biotite-chlorite alteration assemblages. There are well developed supergene gold horizons in the clay-oxide profile above most of the deposits (Osborne, 2002). This results in a wide variety of ore types being treated. At times 40 - 50 per cent of the ore may be oxide in nature. After some commissioning difficulties associated with instrumentation, the thickener has performed satisfactorily although it has not reached its design capacity. The maximum density achieved under normal operating conditions with 20 per cent oxide ore is about two per cent below the design. The thickenerÆs performance deteriorates further with increasing amounts of oxide ore in the blend. The thickener has provided sufficient water for the successful operation of the heap leach and has also provided some down stream benefits for the gold plant by way of pH and cyanide conditioned thickener overflow water.

George Fisher Mine, near Mount Isa in northwest Queensland, has been producing Pb-Zn-Ag ore since the late 1980s. It consists of two separate underground deposits, George Fisher South and George Fisher North. These two deposits are drilled and modelled separately but are crushed and hoisted as a single stream. The Pb-Zn concentrator in Mount Isa processes ore from George Fisher Mine and Black Star Open Cut, with production also from the Isa Lead Mine until January 2006. This paper outlines the steps involved in setting up a robust reconciliation system for George Fisher Mine, in conjunction with requirements of the Pb-Zn concentrator, Black Star Open Cut Mine and the Mount Isa Lead Mine. Good quality input data and commitment to training have contributed to establishing a robust and effective reconciliation system. Reconciliation data has highlighted several other continuous improvement opportunities.

Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The value of Raman spectroscopy to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation of iron ores was assessed by applying the technique to representative samples of banded iron-formations (BIF) and a BIF-derived, martite-goethite ore. The common iron oxides haematite, magnetite and goethite as well as gangue minerals such as quartz and carbonates all show distinct Raman spectra that enables these phases to be easily detected and mapped in situ for either samples prepared as polished blocks or unprepared material. Raman spectroscopy also offers the potential of in situ chemical characterisation. Shifts in the excitation bands of carbonate detected in BIF were related to the Mg content of Fe-carbonate and confirmed the first world-wide occurrence of a high Mg-bearing siderite (pistomesite) in BIF.The discriminatory power of Raman spectroscopy coupled with the potential of the technique to offer large-scale (volumetric) characterisation of iron ore will be of great value not only to the existing BID and CID ore types, but also to the newly emerging magnetite iron deposits (MID).
