Before proceeding I wish to say that the excellent diagrams by which my paper is illustrated are the work of Mr. C. H. Barnes, Constructing Engineer of the Kalgurli Gold Mines Limited, and I am also much indebted to Mr. F. A. Moss, manager of the mine and for the privilege piIling information not previously made public.The limited time at my disposal has coolled to, curtail the scope of my paper to a few practices in ore treatment which are being worked on the Kalgurli Mine, but which I believe are of more than ordinary interest to thp~e Goncerned in modern treatment of gold ores. As an introduction to my subject it is, necessary that I should give a brief outline of the process by whiGh the gold is won from the complex sulpho-telluride ore of the Kalguili mine.My business is not to enter into any discussion as to the relative merits of the two rival sulpho-telluride ore treatment processes at work on the Kalgoorlie field, viz, the treatment of the unroasted ore after shining by solutions of bromocyanide, as against the treatment of the ore-after roasting by solutions of potassium or sodium cyanide either in filter presses or percolating sand vats. Even if reliable costs and percentages of extractions were obtainable in each case, it would not constitute an infallible basis of comparison, as the larger plants would necessarily have an advantage in cost per ton as against the small plants, and the other conditions obtaining are in many Cases dissimilar.

THE Mount Morgan mine has, from the time of its historical discovery, been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. The first examination was made by Dr. R. L. Jack, in 1884. He came to the conclusion, from theevidence then available, that nothing but a thermal spring in the open air-otherwise a geyser-could account for the formation of the ore body. This report attracted world-wide attention at the time. Since then the mine has been examined by most of the leading geologists of Australia, and by many from elsewhere. In all cases the examination has only extended over a period' of a few days or weeks, and in the light of present knowledge of the deposit we know that sufficient data could not be obtained in such a short time to warrant the statement of definite conclusions. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that a considerable difference of opinion exists as to the genesis of the deposit. That the company considered more detailed investigation necessary is shown by the fact that some thirteen years ago it employed Mr. Charles Walker as geological surveyor on the .mine. At that time also the data available was insufficient to give satisfactory results. It is, however, a matter for comment that none of the geological reports on the property took notice of the increase of copper values in the ore with depth, though the present workings and diamond-drilling...

Metropolitan Colliery has some areas of roof where immedi- ate support is required in development. The disadvantages of percussive roof bolting at the face have led to recent produc- tion trials with rotary boring and rapid=setting resin anchored roof bolts developed at the Colliery. The three innovations involved are: (1) the wet drilling of small holes with an all- hydraulic, portable rotary boring machine; (2) the rapidity of loading a "point anchored" resin bolt; and (3) the consistently high anchorage strength available. All three innovations provide striking advantages over the previously available alternatives. The greatest disad- vantage - that of cost of resin - is not prohibitive, and there is promise of improvement in the future. There are possibilities of variations of the techniques for special support problems in particularly difficult roofs.

The paper is introduced by some general comments on the Electrolytic Zinc Company West Coast Mines operations. An outline of the geology of the Rosebery Mine orebodies preced- es a resume of the mining methods used prior to the current mechanization programme. The reasons for the introduction of longhole stoping techniques are given together with a brief explanation of both sublevel longhole and longhole stoping methods. The application of remotely controlled loaders within these stoping methods is discussed. A description of the remote control mechanisms, used on Atlas Copco 310 and 511 Cavo loaders, is followed by comments on these mechanisms from both a maintenance and production viewpoint. A summary of perform- ance statistics and operator safety records vindicate the selection of remotely controlled loaders for the longhole stoping areas at Rosebery Mine.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

Traditional exploration has been undertaken by both local and overseas experts to discover tin deposits in Indonesia over almost 300 years. Indonesia is part of a tin belt which runs from Myanmar in the north through Malaysia to Singkep, Bangka, and Belitung islands in Indonesia in the south. The discovery of alluvial tin deposits is becoming harder as the more obvious geological targets are exhausted and topographical conditions become more difficult. New approaches are required to sustain successful exploration. There are indications that tin deposits can be found at depth on-shore as well as off-shore. These deposits are found associated with tough clays. On-shore tin exploration is hampered by swampy areas, while the off-shore search is often affected by difficult sea conditions. These factors lead to increases in the cost of exploration as well as the cost of subsequent production. Tin price fluctuations and environmental issues are also of major concern in the planning of the future operation of tin mining in Indonesia.

The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

Process mineralogy is an inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and mineral processing. As a predicting and trouble-shooting tool, process mineralogy helps address all mineralogical issues and problems related to mineral processing. It provides useful information on process design and optimisation, flow sheet development and cost reduction. As more and more complex and refractory ores are being discovered and processed, it is believed that process mineralogy will gain more attention and play a more important role in process design and optimisation. This paper will first discuss the scope of process mineralogy and mineralogical factors that may affect mineral processing of various ores, and then focuses on the application of process mineralogy in process design and optimisation through case studies.

Valuable data for geotechnical interpretation and integration into effective Australian underground mine planning may often be available, yet is not always fully appreciated or utilised, particularly in the early stages of mine planning or in due diligence studies. There may be considerable benefits associated with early prioritisation of geotechnical evaluation and impact on mine planning. Unidentified, misinterpreted, or ill-defined adverse geological and related geotechnical resource characteristics can pose significant business risk to underground coal projects and operations. Preliminary resource definition in the early conceptual mine planning stages attributes significant focus (entirely warranted) on resource quality and structural geology constraints. Yet detailed geotechnical data analysis and interpretation, which may have a substantial down stream impact and sensitivity with respect to future mine planning strategies, at times is given lower priority, or scoped and resourced in the later stages of a bankable feasibility study. Through extensive mine planning experience and observation of downstream process impacts, it has been found there is often data available for geotechnical analysis that does not readily stand out or is not adequately understood or utilised, available at the early (conceptual) stages of mine planning. Part of the issue may be that exploration geologists are not necessarily experienced geotechnical engineers and do not necessarily recognise or understand all important parameters. Subject to appropriate application of experienced professionals data can be manipulated to provide key geotechnical hazard assessment at minimal cost, and provide a framework for understanding and optimising the mine planning process. Although there is no single prescribed strategy for resource evaluation from a geotechnical perspective, potential business risks and mitigation approaches can and should be adopted at the conceptual mine planning stage. There has been a recent focus in the metals industry to provide a reporting framework for geotechnical classification of mining projects. This paper outlines the strategies and gives examples of key analyses adopted in mine planning and discusses the relative merits of adopting a reporting framework as a tool for geotechnical classification in mine planning.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and is normally done as a batch process in open kettles.A number of attempts have been made to establish continuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) at Port Pirie have overcome this problem by constructing a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of a novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.INTRODUCTIONLead bullion emerging from the blast furnaces at Port Pirie is at a temperature of about 1100°C and contains, among other impurities, about 1 per cent of copper.The first stage of refining is the removal of this copper by a drossing operation and in the past this was done, batchwise, by allowing the bullion to cool back in 100 ton kettles.At about 700°C, copper dross begins to separate as a crust on the surface of the kettle and this separation was allowed to continue down to about 450°C when the crust was brokenup and skimmed manually using a long handled, balanced, spoon. The dross was then smelted in a reverberatory furnace to produce a saleable copper matte and separate out lead bullion, which was returned to the drossing kettles. Production blasting of Dc Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, Koffiefontein and Finsch Mines involves both uphole trough rings of 9 to I I holes and near vertical 360 degree compound rings of 42-54 holes. The rate of production from these stages is dependent upon being able to achieve a specified fragmentation size range and this has driven the derivation of blasting practices to consistently achieve this target fragmentation. At the Dutoitspan Mine, in Kimberley, where mining of the kimberlite pipe is by block caving, 100 per cent extraction of the undercut level by ring blasting is essential. If this is not achieved, pillars are formed which not only inhibit the efficient initiation of the caving process, but also concentrates load onto the extraction level, causing damage to draw points and pillars. These two case studies demonstrate the importance of achieving optimum blasting performance for downstream mining efficiency; ie fragmentation for increased productivity at Koffiefontein Mine and 100 per cent undercut extraction for efficient initiation of the caving process at the Dutoitspan Mine. The case studies also serve to highlight the long road towards blast optimisation taken by De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd (Koffiefontein. Finsch, Premier and Kimberley Mines) since 1989.

Many narrow-vein gold deposits are characterised by a high to extreme nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold. They rank amongst the most difficult of deposits to produce an accurate and precise resource estimate. This contribution presents a case study from the Nalunaq Gold Mine in Southern Greenland. The mine commenced operation in May 2004 and is currently operating at a rate of 400 tonnes per day, to produce about 100 000 oz gold per annum from a total resource base of 1.2 Moz. Mineralisation is characterised by quartz veins that are hosted within a shear zone that is continuous over about 1000 m. The principal orebody is the Main Vein structure, which ranges up to 3 m in width, maintains an average dip of 35¦SE, and contains significant gold grades (1000s g/t Au). Gold particles are often visible, with 25 per cent being greater than 250 microns in size. Variography using underground development samples indicates a nugget effect of about 75 per cent. For the 2005 resource estimate, a 2D metal accumulation ordinary kriged block model was used to produce a global grade for the Target and South Blocks of the Main Vein. Grade control chip-channel samples are collected from æshantyÆ drive footwalls, and used as the basis for both the kriged block model and to determine the grade of individual stope blocks by peripheral weighted averages. Geology plays a key role in mining efficiency, given the locally variable nature of the ore zone.

Atlas Copco is one of the worldÆs leading providers of industrial productivity solutions (Atlas Copco, 2009). Furthermore, the company spans 160 markets and held 34 000 employees at the end of 2008. The company is organised under three ætechniquesÆ whereby the Construction and Mining TechniqueÆs business division is located within +rebro, Sweden. This paper is aimed at briefly facilitating information on how the company and more specifically, the Construction and Mining Technique is run. Also, by sharing my experiences, this paper is intended to encourage and motivate students currently studying for a degree relevant to the minerals industry, to apply for this extremely beneficial scholarship. Through a number of presentations relating to the various divisions, products and aftermarket services of the company, I came to realise that Atlas Copco extends beyond simply selling equipment suitable for the mining and civil industries. This tour through Sweden also contained highlights of visiting the Underground Rock Excavation factory, Surface Drilling Equipment factory and Secoroc divisions. I was also fortunate enough to participate in a tour of the LKAB mine in Kiruna. In addition, time was allocated to less industry related activities, and I was able to go dog sledging, sip vodka cocktails out of ice glasses at the Ice Hotel and enjoy traditional Swedish foods of moose and reindeer. Most important and memorable to me; however, was the ability for employees of Atlas Copco to speak of the company and their products with such passion and enthusiasm, which truly made this a motivational and unforgettable experience.

The aim of this paper is to present an innovative method to help delineate potential target volumes for haematite-goethite mineralisation as opposed to more magnetic ores. This is achieved through interpretation and modelling (2.5D and 3D inversions) of ground magnetics and gravity surveys over the Koolanooka South prospect in Western Australia. The targets are assumed to be dense and weakly magnetic and hosted within banded iron formation (BIF) horizons. Geophysical interpretation (2D map) was performed using a variety of processed magnetic and gravity images (Betts et al, 2007) to determine the distribution of lithologies, to understand the structural architecture and to map out any anomalous areas of excess density (possibly indicating goethite alteration). The created geological map is used to build geological cross-sections (geometrically consistent) that were modelled (in 2.5 D) against both potential field datasets. The crosssections are consequently used as the framework to build a 3D geological model. The model defines 3D volumes of rocks including several BIF horizons. The distribution of densities and magnetic susceptibilities of the BIFs is inverted within the GOCAD«-VPmg environment to reduce the misfit between the response of the model and the observed gravity and magnetics. By combining the results of both petrophysical property distribution it is possible to map out (using classical GIS type queries in 3D) volumes of higher density and lower magnetic susceptibility.

Based upon specialised experience of rope mechanics spanning over 20 years, this paper reviews the processes of degradation and fatigue that are relevant to hoisting ropes in mines. The review is brought up to date with an account of the most recent work in this field, which identifies a torsional fatigue process and quantifies the impact of degradation upon the residual service life. A proper understanding of these processes is important in determining how different parameters of hoist design and operation interact to determine rope life. This knowledge is also important in informing decisions relating to rope discard based upon observed condition, as well is identifying the critical features that must be quantified reliably during inspection.

Underground mines often rely on ore pass systems to ensure the transport of ore and waste. Consequently, it is important to ensure the smooth operation of such systems. Ore pass degradation that may require rehabilitation results in production delays and high operational costs. The occurrence of hang-ups within an ore pass also leads to disruption of ore production. There are important safety concerns when worker intervention is necessary to re-establish material flow in the ore pass. In order to facilitate the design of ore pass systems, mining operations often rely on past experience, or semi empirical guidelines. This paper describes recent efforts to establish a comprehensive database on current practices; encountered operational problems and solutions in ore pass design in Quebec underground mines.

Longwall mining has historically been considered an application for only deep reserves. This has changed in the recent past as longwall has become competitive with surface mining. Many resources marked for stripping now he in the domain of longwall. Today, the best longwall mines compete with strip mines operating in even the lowest stripping ratios. Longwall mining has become more widely applicable than it ever has been in the past and it is now generally considered the method of choice in situations where high levels of coal production are required. But the best way to use longwall mining has become less certain with the opportunities that highwall access provides. Wall-to-wall mining is the use of retreating longwall developed from and retreating toward a highwall. As a surface mine reaches its ultimate highwall, the opportunity for longwall punch mining or wall-to-wall mining is obvious. There are several clear operating advantages to operating a longwall in this way and where highwalls are available, the best economic decision will generally favor planning a direct approach. Yet wall-to-wall is not applicable in every situation even when highwalls are available. Moreover, the advantages of wall-to-wall mining do not always justify the cost of trenching or box cuts to access coal . However, many tactical advantages of operating from the highwall can be realized with the use of specially equipped blind drilled or raised bored shafts. This paper discusses novel techniques for a shaft assisted mining system which permits the addition of conveyor structure and mine systems from the surface to the face for advance and retreat mining with longwall, shortwall or room and pillar panels.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. Underground, 7 level (897 ft.) was the lowest producing level. Many gold deposits were mineralised by fluids and processes that also altered the host rocks. This alteration may often be a useful visual aid that distinguishes barren, low-grade from high-grade regions in a rock mass. Alteration intensity is commonly used in gold deposits as a visual tool, along with face sampling or grade control support, to define oreblocks and guide excavation in underground and open pit mining. However, alteration is not often used at the resource estimation stage. Mineralised lodes are usually defined by geologists using a ægeo-grade envelopeÆ, where a number of constraints are considered, including an (arbitrary) cut-off grade; the ænaturalÆ grade break between high- and low-grades; and geological features including structural, lithological or alteration continuity. The geo-grade envelope is usually thought to satisfy the requirements of stationarity for grade estimation, and is considered a single domain. This paper examines a modelling technique combining gold grade and alteration, applied to the Wallaby deposit in Western Australia, to imbue a greater level of detail to the grade estimation in a region tested by relatively sparse drilling. This was achieved by utilising the correlation of gold grade and alteration, along with the spatial characteristics of the alteration, when estimating grades within a number of lodes. The alteration-driven estimation was utilised in conjunction with an unfolding approach, and the use of probability estimates, to overcome geometric data constraints. This technique allows greater control and most likely provides a more reliable estimate of the mineable resources than a global grade cut-off when visual control is to be a major vector in grade control.

The Ernest Henry Copper-Gold mine, the third largest copper deposit in Australia, is located 35 km NE of Cloncurry in the Mt Isa-Cloncurry mineral district of NW Queensland. Ernest Henry Mining Pty Ltd (EHM), a wholly owned subsidiary of Xstrata Copper Australia, operates the mine. Approximately 10.2 Mt of ore grading 1.12 per cent Cu and 0.56 g/t Au were processed during the 2001 - 2002 financial year. The Ernest Henry plant produces copper-gold concentrate, which is trucked to Mt Isa for smelting. The Ernest Henry deposit is a member of the diverse Fe-oxide-(Cu-Au) class of deposits. The orebody is hosted within a sequence of moderately SSE-dipping, intensely altered Paleoproterozoic intermediate metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. Copper (chalcopyrite)-gold mineralisation occurs mainly within the magnetite-biotite-calcite ¦ pyrite matrix of a 250 m + 300 m pipe-like breccia body. The breccia pipe comprises two anastomosing lenses separated by a lower grade, clast-supported breccia zone. Several anastomosing brittle faults affect the macro-geometry of the orebody. Copper grade is proportional to the degree of matrix support in the breccia. The July 2002 Ore Reserve was 88.7 Mt @ 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.5 g/t Au. Resource estimation at Ernest Henry is based on a large database of predominantly diamond drill hole information. Drill spacing is typically 50 m + 50 m. Ordinary kriging is used to estimate Cu, Au, SG and IST (oxidation indicator) into model parent cells of dimension 20 m E + 20 m N + 16 m RL. The block model is comprised of five geological-geochemical domains represented by 3D wireframe surfaces. Zonal control, where samples and blocks are assigned the same domain number, is used to control grade estimation. The geometry of the domains defines hard grade boundaries across strike and soft boundaries along strike A Deep Drilling Project was initiated in August 2002 with the initial aim of testing the down-plunge extension of the orebody to a vertical depth of over 1 km. The encouraging intersections to date have resulted in a significant increase in the mineÆs open pit Mineral Resource together with the identification of an underground Mineral Resource. Added benefits of the project included an expanded and updated geological legend and an improved understanding of the host geological sequence.
