The use of compressive crushing equipment such as gyratory crushers within minerals processing plants can potentially generate large quantities of dust. Remedies to this problem include the retrofitting of shrouds, enclosures, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems and water suppression systems. The single or combined application of these systems must be optimised to ensure they operate efficiently. It is desirable that the future design planning of such facilities include integrated dust suppression and/or removal systems to ensure material delivery rates are maintained and the welfare of the workforce is protected. The characteristic release of dust and the disturbance to the surrounding ventilation airflow is investigated by the construction and solution of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models validated by data obtained from scale experiments. A 3D computational model was constructed using the FluentTM CFD software to represent the background ventilation regime within an underground crushing installation. The falling ore is represented as a continuum granular fluid falling under gravity from the raised bed of the dump truck. Transient path lines are computed to simulate the updraft airflow generated by the tipping process and indicate the dispersion path of any entrained dust. The relationships between the falling ore material, the displaced air and the shear induced flow are determined by an analysis of the computed volume/mass flow rates predicted across the crusher opening. An analysis of the airflow patterns predicted by the CFD simulation models indicates strong shear flows induced between the tipped material and the surrounding airflow in the vicinity of the crusher during tipping, and a strong influence of the background ventilation regime on the path taken by this shear flow. Scale experimental studies were conducted to characterise the induced shear flow and visualise the potential entrainment and transport of dust. An analysis of these experiments is presented.

Dissolution of S02 into water-acetone mixtures results in the formation of 2-hydroxy-2-propane sulphonic acid. The pH, or acid strength, of water-carbonyl-S02 mix- tures can be controlled by varying the concen- tration of the carbonyl compound or the rate at which S02 is added to the water-carbonyl mixture during a reaction. The ease with which the acid strength of these mixtures can be controlled means that they have significant potential for use as a selective lixiviant. We have used water-acetone-S02 mixtures to selectively dissolve phosphate minerals in Christmas Island and Duchess phosphate ores and also uranium minerals in Yeelirrie uranium ore and Olympic Dam copper concentrate.

The design, construction and operation of a 500,000 tonne per year Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) plant at Kambalda embracing the period from 1980 to 1982 has been previously discussed (Sceresini, 1982).Since that time the annual throughput rate has increased to 780,000 tpy.This paper discusses the changes and improve-ment made to allow this increased production to occur with minimal capital expenditure.

P S B Stewart has rightly pointed to a possible obscurity in our paper on drilling patterns, viz. in comparing the improvement of a triangular drilling pattern over a square one, we used percentage improvements without always making clear their base. We hope, however, that other readers, like Stewart, have been able to understand the particular meaning from the context.Although different methods of estimation of an ore deposit will have different local bias (Philip and Watson, 1985), the critical relationship affecting the reliability of estimation of an unsampled location is the scale of local variation of the variable being estimated in comparison with the density and isotropy of sampling. This relationship overrides all other considerations.

The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthermometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10-15 pm in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170-220¦C in early 2A veins, 165-322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190-256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8-11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt. Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 ¦m are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160-268¦C and salinities of 5-8 NaCl equiv. wt %. The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of New Orleans-based Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold of New Orleans, operates a large mining complex on the Western half of the Island of New Guinea in Tembagapura, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The IOZ (Intermediate Ore Zone) mine, one of the underground orebodies, is mined by block caving. The area affected by the cave collects a large quantity of rain and ground waters mixing with fine rock particles. The mixture, commonly called æwet muckÆ, sometimes spills into drawpoints and makes the working environment hazardous to the loader operators. Wet muck is observed in an increasing number of drawpoints in the IOZ mine and remote LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) technology has been implemented to handle the ore. The driving force for this automation project has been the safety of the loader operators. The system has been developed mainly in-house and incorporates state-of-the-art features. Up to eight remote loaders and nine rock breakers are controlled from an underground control room located approximately 400 metres from the active extraction panels. The two underground crushers and nine conveyor feeders are also operated remotely from an adjacent control room. The development of FreeportÆs remote system has taken time and considerable effort. Not only the success of the IOZ mine was at stake but also the fulfillment of environmental commitments pertaining to the mill tailings. Approximately eight per cent of the mill feed must come from underground skarn deposits to neutralise the acid-generating tailings generated by the huge Grasberg open pit ores.

All industrial water users are required to hold Water Rights, which are in effect licences to take, use, dam, divert or discharge water. Water Rights are obtained through a legally defined process and any potentially affected party has the per to object to their granting. A special tribunal hears the evidence for and against an application, and issues its decision, which is reviewable in a higher court on Appeal. Rights, if granted, are issued subject to conditions and, in the case of mining discharges, limits would be set on flaw rate, suspended solids concentrations, turbidity, pH and the concentrations of any potential toxicants. This paper presents a case study of an integrated, catchment wide water management plan for Lake Waahi, that was prepared by the author, and others while the author was in the employ of CoalCorp, and its predecessor, State Coal Mines. With the progress of modern mining engineering, one of the features of which is the mining from greater depths and the hoisting of greatly increased loads, it becomes a matter of increasing importance that the engineer should be able to determinewith some degree of precision the character of the strains on the hauling rope. But a wire rope is a complex structure; it is made up of spirally-twisted strands, which in turn are composed of spirally-twisted wires, and it is not particularly easy to say exactly what happens when this "doubly-twisted structure is wound round a drum or over a pulley.. The difficulty has been generally evaded in ordinary practice by the simple device of adopting a large factor of safety for the rope-usually from 8 to 10-a factor which experience has shown is sufficiently large to cover the bending strains set "up when the rope is passed over pulleys of the sizes commonly considered appropriate.When, however, we add the stress due to the bending of the rope to the stress produced by" the direct pull, we find that the actual factor of safety is usually more nearly 4 than 10, and frequently the bending stresses in the rope are so large compared with the simple tensile stresses that their neglect may easily lead to disastrous results when dealing with problems a little out of the common run. BHP-Utah Coal Limited's Peak Downs Mine is located in Cen- tral Queensland, approximately 200 km south west of Mackay. The annual raw coal production of the mine is over 8 million tpa, requiring the removal of about 40 million cubic metres of prime overburden. This is achieved through the use of five large draglines. The large depths of overburden (up to 55 metres) encountered over half the strike length of the mine enables cast blasting to be carried out in conjunction with draglines employ- ing the chopping method of digging. The objective of cast blast- ing is to use explosive energy to move as much material directly into spoil as possible. The additional costs of drilling and blast- ing are offset by reducing dragline rehandle. Two factors which are of primary importance to the design of cast blasts are initiation control and material velocity. High speed motion picture photography is a powerful diagnostic tool to quantify these aspects of blasting (Winzer, Montenyohl and Ritter, 1979; Chiappetta et al., 1983; Anon., 1983). The objec- tives of such analysis are to: 1. Determine the burden velocity, 2. Determine the time to initial movement (that is, the inter- val between a face hole firing and the initial movement of the burden), 3. Check the accuracy of the initiation sequence. BHP Central Research Laboratories (CRL) and Peak Downs Mine monitored a cast blast in the mine's Winchester Pit on 18 August, 1988. The objectives of this exercise were to: 1. Quantify current cast blast performance, providing a base case for comparison with modified blast design. 2. Compare two orientations of angled holes within the blast. 3. Assess the effectiveness of cast blasting utilising an air-deck. 4. Check blast timing with respect to burden movement times.

Associated Tin Smelters, Sydney, are developing tin smelting operations in a prototype commercial SIROSMELT plant comprising two furnaces of 5 to 8 tonnes capacity. Features of the plant and its operation are discussed and results of its application to tin slag reduction and high-grade tin concentrate smelting are presented. Development work is still in progress but experience indicates that the technology has potential for lowering the costs of tin smelting and relieving constraints on grade and iron content of concentrate imposed by conventional technology.

The Kidston breccia pipe is situated approximately 280 km west northwest of Townsville, north Queensland. It is currently Australia's largest gold producer with production varying between 8,000 and 16,000 tonnes of ore per day. Current reserves are estimated at 36.2 million tonnes averaging 1.74 C/t Au and 2.21 g/t Ag. Alluvial gold in the gullies surrounding the deposit was first discovered in the 1880's and between 1907 and 1948 small scale open cut and underground mining was undertaken. Advances in extractive metallurgy and an increase in the gold price were major factors influencing the recent exploration and development of large scale mining of the deposit by Placer Pacific and Kidston Gold Mines. The breccia pipe is trapezoid in shape with surface dimensions of 1100 m by 900 m. Clasts show only limited evidence of mixing during brecciation, with the pre-breccia stratigraphy still discernible on the basis of clast types. This lack of mixing together with the intimate association with intrusive activity, suggests that the brecia formed by collapse, probably associated with the escape of a large volume of irothermal fluid from a crystallising hatholith. Mineralisation and alteration are also sratially and temporally associated with rhyolite emplacement and brecciation. Pre-breccia mineralisation consists of laminated stockwork quartz veins associated with muscovite, quartz and orthoclase-epidote alteration. Stockwork veins contain either anomalous molybdenite or gold. Uneconomic early stage post-breccia mineralisation and alteration consists of cavity infill quartz-epidote and calcite associated with potassic and propylitic alteration respectively. Economic late stage post-breccia cavity infill and sheeted veining consists of quartz-carbonate-sulphide infill associated with phyllic alteration. The grade of gold mineralisation generally decreases downwards in the system with an increase in the amount of pyrrhotite relative to pyrite. "Pierre Gy showed in his early works that the results in estimating the variance of the mean value of continuous lots depends on sampling mode (random, stratified or systematic), except in the theoretical case that the measurand is randomly distributed in the lot. The experimental variance estimate calculated from samples taken from the lot is independent of sampling mode but depends on sample size and the type of the lot heterogeneity. Production of oic at BHP Minerals Pty Ltd's Cannington Mine commenced in May 1997. The initial sloping blocks at the [nine are located in the upper part of the Footwall Lead lode, and the Hangingwall Lead and Glenholme Breccia lodes. This paper discusses the geological investigations, interpretation and modelling that was undertaken for the Footwall Lead lode production block at Cannington Mine, as well as providing a basic geological introduction to the Cannington deposit.

The mining industry has a well deserved reputation earned over the years for innovation, engineering, management and the quick application to mining of emerging technology. The cumulative result is the economic exploitation of lower grade resources. The developments during the last decade have done nothing to tarnish the reputation. There are many that come easily to mind: the use of contractors for both surface and underground operations, a trend toward mine management contracts, the increasing recognition of the economic potential of ground support, and the development of physical measures to achieve it, - sophisticated measures to analyse blasting , and thus improve fragmentation, - instrumentation to assist geotechnical appraisal, - the development and application of the powerful and flexible, excavator, - the evolution of measures to improve grade control, - massive improvements in equipment productivity and reliability built largely around the application of hydraulics, - the development of powerful computer packages for orebody modelling, mine design and extraction, - simple "dense" fill systems, - maintenance management techniques including the greater use of off-site maintenance of exchange components, - the utilisation of communication systems for data transfer.

Many mining companies, by their remoteness of location from source of power, have to generate their own power and must experience the same problem that had to be met when deciding to increase the capacity of the power station. At present the Company is treating approximately 54,000 tons of ore mined per month, and the present shift average load. is approximately 8,500 kW. at 0.8 power factor, generated at the power plant, the observed peak load being 10,500 kW.It is proposed to increase the tonnage of ore treated to include 36,000 tons of copper ore, in addition to the present 54,000 tons of lead ore. The average load is estimated to be approximately' 16,000 kW. with a peak load of 17,500 kW. The estimate provides for power of 1,000 kW. to be supplied to the north end leases in the next 12 months, also for increased ventilation in the mines.There are installed in the main power station three turbo alternator sets each of 5,000 kW.; normally two sets are run in parallel and one set is a standby unit. A 12,500 kW. set is being installed and proposed loading with the increased tonnage will require the 12,500 kW. set and one 5,000 kW. set, or alternatively, the three 5,000 kW. sets When the 12,500 kW. set is down for service. The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. In a given equatorial plane, the fraction gftharge undergoing detonation decreases with an increase in the booster-plane distance.
