The latent conditions clause in various general conditions of contract have traditionally proved to be a source of significant disputes in tunnelling contracts, even when extensive geotechnical investigations have been carried out at the tunnel site and a report of these investigations provided with the tender documents, informing the contractor of the nature and extent of subsurface conditions likely to be met with during execution of the works. This paper discusses the contractual aspects of the new latent conditions clause in the recent Australian Standard AS 2124-1986, General Conditions of Contract, in relation to tunnelling contracts. A comparison of this new clause is made with other latent conditions clauses in general conditions of contract in use in Australia and other commonwealth countries. It is seen that the new latent conditions clause in the recent Australian Standard 2124-1986 has, by providing for a reasonable apportionment of risks, attempted to minimize contractual disputes relating to latent conditions in tunnelling contracts and to provide a satisfactory basis for quick and efficient settlement of such disputes should they arise during execution of these contracts.

At many locations in Australia the decommissioning of mining operations will require the disposal of excess water. If the water is contaminated its disposal may be restricted by government guidelines. The timing of water disposal may be critical to the schedule of close-out. The uncertainty of the annual rainfall input to the water storage and disposal system may determine the success or failure of close-out. The uncertainty associated with any outcome can be used to determine the reliability of the system, or inversely its risk. The technique of Monte Carlo simulation, using the uncertainty in annual rainfall, is applied to quantify the risks associated with water disposal as part of the requirements for close-out in two case studies. In both case studies it is assumed that water disposal is via evaporation only. The first case study is the Nabarlek operation, located about 270 km east of Darwin. This project is required to complete the engineering work associated with its close-out by December 1995. The second study investigates the situation of close-out for the Ranger Uranium Mine, about 250 km east of Darwin. It should be noted that the Ranger mine was examined as part of the annual update of its contingency rehabilitation plan and the probability of implementing the plan is extremely small. The probability of success for the Nabarlek case varied from less than ten per cent to greater than 95 per cent depending on the management strategy. Four possible strategies were investigated for the Ranger mine with the chance of success varying between 20 and 95 per cent. The estimation of the evaporation rate and the area allocated to evaporation was critical in both cases. By applying seasonally based evaporation pan coefficients determined on site, rather than an average monthly value of 0.75, the chance of success was improved by up to 35 per cent for Ranger. Simulation modelling is able to provide information on the likely response of mine water management systems and the level of risk. This information is required to efficiently plan and manage the disposal of water for close-out.

It is common practice to include microspheres or similar density reducing agents in inherently insensitive water-based commercial explosives to achieve detonative sensitivity in the absence of chemical sensitisation. It has recently become possible to similarly include microspheres in LDAN (low density ammonium nitrate). Further to previous studies and publications to determine the benefits resulting from the use of microsphere enhanced LDAN technology in blasting, additional advantages are described in this document. These include range tests at independent testing facilities (Universal Tech Corporation û USA) which reflect results observed in the field, and support theoretical assumptions made when the products were introduced. Additionally, on-site studies in opencast pits using Heavy-ANFO blends incorporating modified LDAN, show that monetary savings can be realised through significant advantages gained in plant throughput and explosives use.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. Although technology and circumstances are in a constant state of change, the principles of managing the human element remain constant. The isolated mining community continues to form the backbone of the minerals industry but the nature of the isolation, along with the economic and political environment of the industry, is changing. These changes require new inputs by management to the workforce. Management must determine an effective working relationship with unions on its mine site and concurrently contribute to the build- up of the expertise of the individual worker through training and communication. It must also retain a proper balance, by way of human contribution, in cost and information reporting and in other areas amenable to computerisation. These comprise the aids to management necessary to achieve the desired operating efficiency and profitability.

Paddington processing plant is located approximately 30 km north of Kalgoorlie on the Menzies Highway and is owned by Placer Dome Asia Pacific. First mining was from the Paddington Pit, but in subsequent years the plant has had a history of treating ores from a large number of sources, and has used several different methods to reconcile mining and mill production. Reconciliations are necessary to keep a check on the quality control of mining and grade control processÆs. There is a need to be able to identify and resolve issues that will affect the profitability of the organisation quickly. They are also used to check the quality of the resource/reserve statements, and allow the accurate and timely payment of royalties to stakeholders. During the formation of the Kalgoorlie West operations when Delta Gold Limited and Goldfields Limited merged in 2001, the complexity of reconciliations increased dramatically. The expansion of the scope of reconciliations to include two mills, four underground mines and seven open pits, and ore from one deposit to both mills meant that a revised strategy was essential. A variety of issues have arisen over the years with discrepancies occurring when reconciling both tonnes and grade. There are many ways to approach reconciliations, and in recent times these philosophies have been widely debated on site. A consistent and logical approach that takes into account many different sources of ore, as well as different methods of delivery to the Run of Mine stockpiles is therefore necessary. This would standardise the different approaches taken by the various operations that combined to form Kalgoorlie west. The new method reconciles mill production back to the individual ore sources, and produces reconciled-mined tonnes and grade based on the mill throughput and the change in stockpiles. There will generally be a small discrepancy between the claimed mined tonnes produced (and grades) and the mill production. This needs to be highlighted to the operations concerned if it considered unacceptably large. Paddington mill over the last few years has had up to ten sources of ore each year, and up to 15 different stockpiles being processed during each month from those various pits. This combined with the need for a blended oxide/fresh feed, whilst striving to deliver a consistent (grade and hardness) product to the mill, has meant that reconciliations have been very difficult.

More and more coal in Australia is extracted by underground mining methods especially by longwall mining. These methods can be particularly sensitive to relatively small-scale structural discontinuities and variations in roof and floor rock character. Traditionally, information on these features has been obtained through drilling. However, this is an expensive process and its relevance is limited to the immediate neighbourhood of the boreholes. The geological uncertainty remains. Seismic surveying, especially by 3D seismic, is an alternative tool for geological structure delineation with growing credibility. In fact, it is one of the most effective geophysical methods available for identification of geological structures such as faults, folds, washouts, seam splits and thickness changes which are normally associated with potential mining hazards. Seismic data even can be used for stratigraphic identification. The information extracted from seismic data then can be integrated into mine planning and design. In this paper, we demonstrate computer aided interpretation techniques for maximising the information from seismic data and illustrate the ability of seismic reflection methods to resolve localised geological features. Both synthetic and real seismic data obtained in recent 2D and 3D seismic surveys from Australian coal mines will be used. Compared with results obtained with drilling programs, the structural definitions from seismic are of unprecedented quality.

Nickel and cobalt mineralisation at the Murrin Murrin deposits, in the North Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia, occurs within laterites developed on Archaean serpentinised peridotite units. Lateritic weathering of the peridotite has produced a resource of 116.8 Mt at 1.10 per cent Ni and 0.082 per cent Co (resource at May 1996 with a 0.8 per cent Ni cut-off; see Fazakerley and Monti, this volume). The mineralogy of the Murrin Murrin laterites was investigated to identify the minerals hosting significant Ni mineralisation. Laterite profiles were studied using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), impregnated polished thin sections, and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) Electron Microprobe analysis, of RC percussion drill chips. This paper summarises the results of these studies, and briefly discusses the nature of the minerals hosting Ni mineralisation.

Exploration of a coal deposit provides the data on which a range of mine plans can be developed during project feasibility. The stages of exploration use methods and procedures which initially outline the deposit with more detailed data gathering and analysis of the specific site complexities. The in situ coal resource and reserves are calculated. The mine plan is a function of the mining method chosen and can have significant impact on the recoverable reserves. Other factors which can impact on the recovery of the reserves and the ability to maintain planned production levels are those which were either undetected during exploration or were misinterpreted. Exploration programs should be detailed enough to minimise to an acceptable standard the recognised and potential risks. Past programs which explored to achieve a minimum exploration density required to satisfy measured reserve status have generally proven to be inadequate, placing reserves and production at risk.

This paper discusses the key issues in Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis including the importance of data verification and the shortcomings in DCF analysis. Stockmarket valuation measures and valuation methodology for exploration and pre development projects are examined through examples and pitfalls are identified. The use of valuations in corporate transactions and their strategic value is also discussed.

Several technical and economic factors have to be taken into consideration in developing an optimal mining method. This paper describes some of the important factors learnt during the evolution of the sublevel cave mining method at Trojan Nickel Mine, part of the Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) in Zimbabwe. Sublevel caving (SLC) has been successfully implemented at Trojan mine since its introduction in 1994. The method has evolved over the past six years into a system that has brought about improvements in efficiencies and productivity. Although the original design parameters used were sound and provided a solid foundation for the system, they needed to be optimised to get the best out of the mining method. Improvements and changes have been made in areas such as the drilling process, charging and blasting techniques, ring pattern design, development size and shape, and the draw control system. This has enabled the mine to develop an SLC operation that is efficient and innovative. Experience gained, together with the theory available has given us a much better understanding of the system. This knowledge will be used in the future to enhance the system further. Given the low grades of the BNC Mines, management recognises that only through technical excellence and efficient mining can the mines reduce mining costs and maintain profitability and competitiveness on the world market. In the Zimbabwe mining industry reaction to technological change, mechanisation and advancement have been relatively slow, due to isolation and economic constraints, compared to the rest of the world. Economic difficulties prevail, with high inflation levels, a poor exchange rate, lack of foreign currency and other associated problems. Despite these constraints, the bold steps taken have transformed Trojan mine into a more efficient and competitive operation, presenting itself as the leading mine in the BNC group. Appendices give data to illustrate the benefits obtained.

Australians are at the forefront of exporting their mining expertise in a number of areas. Minerals education is just one example. The growing economies of Southeast Asia host some of the most prospective mineral fields in the world. Laos for example, hosts the world class Sepon and Phu Kham copper-gold deposits. The Philippines has the fifth largest global mineral resource inventory. These and other countries in the region lack the mining engineers, geologists and metallurgists required by international mining companies to ensure their operations are sustainable. This paper describes the author’s experience in working with mining schools in Southeast Asia and specifically the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Various strategies to ensure sustainability and lessons learnt are presented.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

An important aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineral processing attributes, which leads to improved orebody understanding. One of these attributes is flotation performance. Several methods have been developed as indicators for flotation performance, including batch testing leading to kinetic information and the standard grade-recovery curve. This paper makes a preliminary statistical comparison between a newly proposed geometallurgical batch flotation procedure and the æstandardÆ batch flotation test commonly used to measure flotation performance in the laboratory. The new test uses much less material than the standard test, and is much faster. It is concluded that the new method follows the final recovery of the standard method well, suggesting that it will be effective in reflecting ore variability for geometallurgical purposes. Comparison of the methods based on the full grade-recovery curve shows less agreement, but this may be due to the fact that the curve is sensitive to the particular experimental set-up and conditions, which make such comparisons quantitatively challenging. Ranger is a uranium mining operation located within one of the most environmentally sensitive regions of Australia. Geology has played an important role in mine planning, operations and rehabilitation since discovery of the deposits 25 years ago. The Ranger orebodies have a reserve total of 166 300 tonnes of U308 including 90 400 tonnes of U308 at North Ranger. At current milling rates these reserves give a mine life greater than 40 years. The uranium is hosted in Lower Proterozoic rocks of the Cahill I ormation and is associated with strong chlorite alteration. In pit grade control involves the use of calibrated probes and a radiometric truck discriminator allowing fast, accurate grade determination of material. Ore is defined at a cut-off grade of 0.2 per cent U308. Mineralised material is defined by the Uranium Mining (Environmental Control) Act 1979 (UMEC Act) at a grade of 0.02 per cent U30s. Natural water levels in the #1 Pit area vary as much as 7.5 metres between wet and dry seasons. Ground water inflow into the pit during the dry season is 600 m3/day. No significant slope failures have occurred in the pit. The environmental impact of mining operations is constantly monitored. Rehabilitation of non-mineralised stockpiles is ongoing. This paper discusses the interaction between geology, hydrogeology, rock mechanics and grade control with the present mining operation.

A paper describing dewatering at a base metal mine in Queensland includes an account of the investigation techniques employed to establish a conceptual model as a basis for the evaluation of various dewatering strategies. Of considerable interest is the use of a field gravity survey to delineate a zone of highly weathered rock which forms the major aquifer at the site.

JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The considerations that determined the installation of entirely new plant were as follows:(1) The need for more compressed air for underground work and more electric current for the extension of the slime-flotation plant for the recovery of zinc, as well as lead, as slime concentrates. Scale build-up in titanium palladium alloy spent electrolyte heat exchangers in the residue treatment plant commissioned at Risdon, Tasmania in 1971 was shown to be a mixture of manganese dioxide and anhydrite (CaSO4). The manganese dioxide was deposited as a result of thermal decomposition of permanganate ions present in the spent electrolyte. It was shown that deposition of manganese dioxide and associated anhydrite scale could be prevented by prior reduction of permanganate ions to the manganous (Mn++) state by the addition of ferrous ions. In the plant this was conveniently accomplished by injecting into the inlet line to the heat exchangers sufficient zinc plant solution containing ferrous sulfate to decolourise the spent electrolyte. This action prevented deposition of such scale for another 21 years, until the heaters were finally decommissioned in March 1992. Measurements indicated that addition of the reducing solution lowered the anodic potential of the titanium alloy by 200 - 300 mV (depending on the solution resistance), but that it was still +300 to 400 mV with respect to a standard calomel electrode. It was shown that, if necessary, a small impressed current could be applied to provide anodic protection. Before scale deposition was overcome by the addition of ferrous sulfate solution, badly scaled heat exchangers were cleaned by recirculating a solution of hydrogen peroxide in spent electrolyte or dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, after laboratory testing of a variety of possible solvents for the scale. Corrosion tests indicated that attack on the titanium alloy by the acidic peroxide cleaning solution was insignificant.

A large open pit is planned at the site of an existing underground mine. Strategic planning work has been undertaken to investigate the project value associated with an expansion of underground operations in conjunction with the proposed pit. Previous analysis determined that any depletion of the available pit resource that changes the optimum pushback sequence has a significant negative impact on overall project value. Therefore, to investigate the viability of an underground expansion requires a system to identify the stope resource that would add value to a combined operation if mined ahead of the pit. The key solution to this problem was to generate a resource model variable that defines the blocks, which have greater discounted value if mined by stoping rather than by the open pit. A key assumption was that the open pit is the main driver of overall project value. From the identified potential underground resource, series of mineable stope shells were generated at a range of cut-offs. This stope reserve data formed the input to a mixed integer program based software tool that was developed and used to optimise the underground mining plan, at conceptual level, for various project configurations. A dynamic programming tool was then applied to evaluate the optimum value of a combined open pit and underground operation. The overall objective of this project was to determine the strategic plan that yields the optimum value for a combined undergroundûopen pit operation. The results provided a clear focus and direction for more detailed design and planning.

In flotation where a bulk flotation concentrate is produced or a gangue sulfide such as pyrite contaminates a concentrate, residual collector has to be removed from the sulfide surfaces to allow selective separation in a subsequent flotation step. Depending on the sulfide mineral, the main species that needs to be removed when using a xanthate collector is either a metal xanthate or dixanthogen. For the identification of surface species, specific solvents may be used to remove each species û metal xanthates are known to be soluble in acetone whilst dixanthogens are known to be soluble in non-polar solvents such as diethyl ether. Xanthates break down with time, temperature and pH into various decomposition products. The major decomposition product is dixanthogen which can aid flotation but other products such as perxanthate and carbon disulfide can have an adverse effect on flotation. Various analytical techniques can be employed to monitor the formation of decomposition products on the surface of the mineral and in solution. The best of these is ultraviolet spectroscopy as it has diagnostic peaks for decomposition product determination. In this work two approaches were taken to understand the relationship between the flotation of a chalcopyrite and pyrite from an ore containing these two minerals. One approach was to remove the xanthate species with an organic solvent and then use ultraviolet spectroscopy to determine the concentration of dissolved species. The second method involved measuring xanthate decomposition in solution by measuring the residual xanthate concentration using ultraviolet spectroscopy. These experiments confirmed the species adsorb at the surface of the mineral and how these species affect the recovery and grade of the valuable mineral. In both cases pH and temperature were varied and two xanthate collectors (SEX and PAX) were used to study these relationships. These relationships could be applied to industrial flotation systems and allow for more accurate determination of optimal xanthate dosage and hence save on reagent costs.
