Management of respirable dust on longwall face remains a challenging issue for mine operators, particularly for the new generation of thick seam longwalls. A fundamental understanding of the airflow behaviour around the shearer is critical for dealing with the dust control issue on longwall faces. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling techniques have been used in this study to conduct a detailed investigation of the air and respirable dust flow patterns around the longwall shearer. Three CFD models have been developed to represent different longwall cutting heights. The results of these modelling studies tallied well with field measured airflow data from different mines. The validated thick seam longwall face model was then used for detailed parametric studies to simulate the effect of various parameters and dust control concepts. The dust control options investigated include various spray configurations, shearer clearer, modified cutting sequences and shearer scrubbers of various capacities to minimise the respirable dust migration towards the walkway area of the longwall face. This paper presents a summary of the results of these CFD modelling investigations.

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database. Backfilling was introduced in 1985 and several potential spin-offs were expected. These included improved local strata control for fall of ground and rockburst conditions, regional benefits in rock mass stability and mine ventilation optimisation.

An intensive safety campaign at Mount Isa Mines Limited from 1956 to 1966 saw the lost time accident frequency rate fall to half its original level. A review of the safety programme was carried out in 1967 and in 1968 the Five Point Safety System was introduced. The seven years since its introduction have been years of significant achievement both in production and safety. Improving safety is a fundamental part of Mount Isa Mines Limited's policy and this system has been a major tool in implementing that policy. To be successful personnel need to be prepared and trained for its introduction and subsequently counselled on its use. A carefully prepared programme is required to phase in various aspects of the system and to make use of complementary steps. The system has been a success and it is anticipated that the continued drive to improve the use of principles of the system will further improve safety. It is hoped that this paper will be of value to those personnel concerned with industrial safety in Australia.

Coal slurry pumping was introduced into the U.K. in 1973. Gateside packs were prepared in areas of containment using R.O.M. coal and a special fast setting cement. The packs restricted roadway convergence and moderated spontaneous combustion risks, but costs were high and alternptives were sought. A similar system using OPC and an accelerator had limited success. Much more successful was the Aquapack process which used dilute slurries of a special OPC based cement and an accelerator based on sodium carbonate and bentonite pumped simultaneously into la fabric packbag. The Tekpak system using HAC and a much modified calcium sulphate mixture superceded Aquapack on the grounds of improved cement pumping life lower alkalinity and lower costs. A further modification of this system gave a cement with a 24 hour pumping life thus obviating flushing out pipe ranges except at the week-ends, improved packbags also increased the efficiency of the process. The hazard of spontaneous combustion can be inhibited if air supply channels across the waste can be located and plugged. Using gas samples from pack pipes to locate the heating and injecting a special grout, formulated from bentonite, sodium silicate and thixotroping agents. into the waste on the intake road has proved a successful method of controlling heatings. Mine' roadway and face cavities are being safely and successfully filled with cementitious foams produced in a novel placer machine. The foams are based on fast setting cements with specialised foaming agents. Up to 13 cu. metres per hour of fast setting thixotropic foams can be produced and their use is now widespread throughout U.K. coal mines.

The application of high technology to monitor and control fire life safety, critical functionality in tunnels and underground spaces generally has progressed at an ever accelerating rate over the past decade. Today these systems comprise some of the most complex and little understood aspects of the tunnel/underground facility construction industry, with this area being perceived as high risk comprising impenetrably complex ‘black box’ technology covered in blinking LEDs. This paper will seek to explode some urban myths and common misconceptions associated with such systems, providing its intended audience with a review of what all this technology comprises and where the real risks lie in its delivery lie.The author contends (and looks to support such contention via this paper) that by applying baseline project and risk management processes to the procurement of this widely misunderstood black box technology, the quality of the final outcome can be much improved, driving innovation, reducing both cost and significantly mitigating delivery risk.CITATION:Taylor, G M, 2014. The rediscovery and recognition of the magnetite potential of the iron mineralisation at the Hawsons Project area 60 km south of Broken Hill has the potential for the development of a new series of magnetite iron-ore operations across the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia. Despite the low-grade of 16 per cent magnetite, the Hawsons project feasibility studies are indicating a positive business case for a large-scale 20 Mt/a of magnetite project for the following reasons:• The mineralisation is on a huge scale, with a major potential for increases beyond the already very large established resource of 1.4 Bt.• The mineralisation is particularly soft for crushing and grinding, with a Bond work index of 6.3 and an overall comminution power requirement of 6.7 kWh/t of ore. This equates to 39 kWh/t of concentrate which is significantly less than for similar projects.• The mineralisation fractures easily, preferentially along grain boundaries.• Location is close to mining infrastructure and a skilled workforce at Broken Hill, 60 km to the northeast.• It is close to road and rail infrastructure for access to the resource.• A high-grade, clean magnetic concentrate can be produced, with the only contaminant being silica.The deposit is a sedimentary siltstone which is considerably different to other known magnetite deposits. This caused significant differences in Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) results between laboratories so that the softness of the ore has required a close focus on, and changes to the laboratory procedures. A DTR procedure has been developed to provide consistent results across the deposit.Crushing and grinding test work has established a clear advantage in the use of the high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing and grinding circuit for this particular ore. The power required for comminution using the HPGR crushing circuit is about half the power required for the Autogenous milling circuit.Therefore, despite the low magnetite grades, the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia has the potential be a new magnetite iron ore province.

The Rise & Shine Shear Zone is a shallow-dipping Cretaceous late metamorphic shear zone formed in a compressional environment. The Shotover mineralised system is dominated by normal faults with well-defined vein systems that cut across Miocene schist folds and faults related to the inception of the Alpine Fault. Despite the geological differences between these mineralisation systems, they share many common features of hydrothermal alteration that have resulted in disseminated gold in altered sheared schist. The most distinctive feature of both systems is the abundant ankeritic carbonate that has formed from decomposition of metamorphic chlorite. Excess iron from this alteration reaction combined with hydrothermal sulphur to form sulphides that host the disseminated gold. The chlorite decomposition reaction was reversed in the latter stages of both mineralisation systems, and this was accompanied by further gold emplacement in the Rise & Shine system.   Both alteration systems involved initial decomposition of metamorphic albite, followed by deposition of albite as a vein mineral in the latter stages. The fluid flow that yielded the disseminated gold was controlled by microshears that pervade host schists, in strong contrast to many Otago Schist vein systems where host rock alteration is absent. The ankeritic alteration in the Shotover and Rise & Shine mineralised systems has increased the volume of mineralised rock, and may have made suitable targets for large-tonnage, low grade gold deposits.

The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

An intermediate scale (8 m + 8 m + 5 m high) constructed waste rock pile experiment was built upon a contiguous grid of 16 gravity drainage lysimeters to investigate the flow of water in unsaturated waste rock. Average net infiltration to the uncovered waste rock pile is 55 per cent of precipitation. Large rainfall events have net infiltration of 55 per cent to 85 per cent. Net infiltration estimates range from 23 to 120 per cent of precipitation between lysimeters. Small-scale lysimeters of less than 4 m2 area are shown to be poor predictors of net infiltration for uncovered waste rock. The appropriate size for lysimeters increases with increasing flow rate. The residence time distribution has an estimated median value of 3.0 to 3.9 years under average infiltration conditions. Water flows within the fine grained matrix, within larger pores (macropores), and in matrix free areas of the pile. In situ tracer concentrations vary between pore sizes, and between spatially distinct areas of the pile, indicating water geochemistry may also be variable. Water samples collected from in situ soil water samplers are dominated by the most mobile water fractions. In situ measurements of water content and matric suction are compared to the measured outflow. The data indicate the focusing of flow in spatially distinct areas can make in situ instrumentation a poor (non-conservative) predictor of volumetric water flow.

Traditionally, operators on mineral flotation plants have relied on visual inspection of the froth surface when making adjustments to process set-points. Machine vision systems are being developed to relate froth surface descriptors, which can be consistently measured in real time, to flotation performance. By investigating the impact of various selected operating variables on both froth surface characteristics and metallurgical performance it is possible to develop a management strategy for the control and optimisation of the process. This paper presents the results of testwork conducted at Kennecott copper mine which investigates the relationship between the froth colour and the concentrate grade and discusses the factors which affect the froth colour. This work shows that the main factors that influence the froth colour in this system are molybdenum, copper and iron concentrate grade, pulp and concentrate per cent solids and pulp iron grade.It goes on to develop models to predict the concentrate grade based on colour information and velocity and stability information. It also shows that the most accurate prediction is made with combined colour and stability information.

Molten salt reactor (MSR) is a promising advanced reactor system aiming to the transmutation of minor actinides such as americium in order to reduce the inventory of ultimate nuclear waste. The fuel is a molten salt in which actinides are homogeneously dissolved in the liquid phase. A chloride salt may be retained for this concept, as it provides low melting point, high solubility of actinides, harder neutron spectrum. To avoid corrosion and precipitation issues, molten salt composition has to be carefully controlled with impurity content as low as possible. Obtaining pure actinide chlorides without contaminants such as oxide, oxychloride, hydroxide and water is still a challenge. To prepare actinide-bearing salt, the chlorination of actinides oxides was investigated in an unstirred reactor under flowing gas as solid-gas reaction. The carbochlorination of PuO2 were performed in the temperature range of 600 to 800°C with chlorine gas as a chlorinating agent and the presence of solid carbon. PuCl3 was successfully synthesised by this method and characterised by X-ray diffraction measurements but some impurities such as oxide phase remain inside the formed product. Refinements of anhydrous and hydrated PuCl3 phases by Le Bail method were also performed for crystalline materials definition. Conversion mainly depends on the chlorinating temperature and the contact between the oxide and the chlorinating agent. A conversion value of 70–80 per cent was achieved at 700°C from PuO2 with quite high specific surface area. The conversion rate was not improved with increasing the chlorination time. The volatilisation of Pu was observed during the carbochlorination experiments. To avoid a loss of Pu caused by sublimation, the chlorination temperature should be limited to 650°C despite that the conversion of PuO2 to PuCl3 was enhanced by increasing temperature. Both carbochlorination and hydrochlorination of AmO2 were also carried out leading to the formation of AmCl3. These first results suggest that americium oxide was chlorinated more readily than plutonium oxide. The purity of produced PuCl3 and AmCl3 still deserves further investigations.

Gold deposits in Eastern China have characteristic of belted distribution. The concentrating belts of gold mineralization are about parallel to the island are belt in Western Pacific Ocean. Gold deposits are mainly concentrated in the aged metamorphic rock series on the upwarping zones and upwarping fault zones, and obviously controlled by the deep fractures and their deriva-tive secondary faults. Gold mineralization had genetic relation to the Mesozoic (especially Yanshan period) magmatic activity. The distribution and genesis of gold deposits can be explained by the assumption of wavy structure. The formation of wavy structure is related to the process of Pacific plate and India plate.

The concept of precise, accurate timing with Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was first seriously addressed in the mid-1980s and much was made of the cheapness and profusion of digital watches in terms of the likelihood of EDDs also being cheap and easy to produce. Ten years later, with every major explosives company and many electronics groups having instituted projects to capitalise on the promise of these devices, production devices are still to come into general use. In South Africa, Expert Explosives units have been used in most applications during proving trials and more recently for production blasting in underground ring stoping and open cast coal. The outcome has been valuable learning both as to the benefits and technical requirements for electronic delay blasting, and especially, safety aspects. Examples are shown of production blasts which utilised the power of EDDs. It is evident that it is not delay accuracy alone which determines the value of these systems, but the whole robustness, flexibility and ease of delay allocation when harnessing blast engineering knowledge. Muckpile movement and shape, fragmentation and vibration frequencies have shown to be greatly influenced by designs which can be implemented no other way. The flexibility of a system and the power of the software controlling it are crucial in capitalising on blasting potential, which lies in integrating control of blast timing with other developing electronic Technologies.

On January 21, 1986, a methane ignition and subsequent mine fire occurred in the under- ground workings of the Jim Walter Resources, Incorporated No. 3 Mine located near Adger, Alabama. The fire, which began on a longwall face and eventually spread into the adjacent gob area, could not be extinguished directly and raged out of control for several hours. Sealing operations were begun underground by Mine Rescue Teams and the fire area was successfully sealed with the mine able to resume production in about one month. The No. 3 Mine liberated over sixteen million cubic feet of methane in twenty-four hours. The operation was unique, in that, the successful underground sealing of a fire in an ultra-gassy mine had not been attempted or com- pleted for several years. Maps and charts are included to give explanation of the typical data used to manage the recovery effort.

Goonyella-Riverside mine is an open cut coal mine in Central Queensland. One component of the mining operations at this site is an uncompacted spoil dump some 50 m above the natural ground surface and over 300 ha in extent formed as a result of bucket wheel excavator operations. Plateau area slopes are 0.5¦ to 1.5¦ with irregular outer dump slopes of 9.5¦ - 17¦Investigation was undertaken and a series of trials planned to assess the suitability of a variety of stabilisation proposals to meet the client's requirements and to conform with Department of Resource Industrystabilisation guidelines.

The strength reduction method (SRM) has been implemented in the FLAC3D finite difference software and applied to coalmine entry support evaluations. The FLAC3D numerical models have been calibrated against instrumented field sites in varying geologies, depths and field stress conditions. The calibration between the field and model results obtained a satisfactory match for rock deformation and support response. Previous research has also developed good correlations between numerical model stability estimations using the SRM and empirically derived stability estimations using the analysis of roof bolt systems (ARBS) software and the coalmine roof rating (CMRR). The purpose of this paper is to further apply the SRM to investigate how specific geotechnical and support parameters can impact coalmine entry stability. Results from different studies demonstrate how the calibrated models were used to investigate a few of the well-known questions in both mine design and support design. For mine design the impact of strong and weak beds in the roof strata, rotating the principal stresses and weakening the floor on excavation stability is investigated. For support design the impact of support length, support spacing and adding cable bolts to the design is demonstrated. These scenarios are evaluated in developmental coalmine entries for a variety of geology and field stress conditions. Stability factors are calculated for each scenario using the SRM. The SRM allows the impact of each parameter to be quantified and allows the support system to be optimised for given geotechnical conditions.CITATION:Esterhuizen, G S, Murphy, M M and Bajpayee, T S, 2014. In July 2006, ten Mining Engineering students and Associate Professor David Laurence from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) participated in the universityÆs inaugural overseas mining field trip. The ten-day trip to western Canada involved visits to two mines in British Columbia, the Diavik Diamond Mine in the Northwest Territories and the Syncrude oil sands operation in Alberta. Importantly, the groupÆs main objective was to gain a global understanding of todayÆs mining industry by observing the different cultural, legal, social and environmental setting found in Canada. It should be noted that the entire trip was planned, organised and directed by the students and benefited from extensive industry support both in Australia and Canada. This report intends to provide an overview of the field trip and describe to a limited extent the Canadian approach to mining.

Professional engineers need to be able to apply university learning to practice. In particular, they have to take responsibility for interactions between technical systems and the complex social environments in which they operate. The most effective way of building this competency is through active experiential learning. We have been developing an advanced educational integrated simulation system to provide mining engineering students with an interactive and immersive learning experience that is not otherwise possible. This will give students an authentic experience in working with industry software packages, while also contextualising the learning in terms of the broader and longer-term impact of technical decisions. We have been piloting the system, in undergraduate courses in order to establish its effectiveness in building systems thinking competencies for mining engineering. For postgraduate students and professionals, the same tools and methods can support studies of more challenging and complex scenarios where mining engineers have to place their decisions within complex global industry contexts.

fhis paper describes investigations into drainage of gas from the solid to control outbursts. Initial studies conducted on drainage of shear zones showed that, given enough time, these can be successfully drained. Once drained, they can be intersected and driven through without any activity of outbursts. The results of programme of investigations to determine parameters for drainage from the solid show that gas flow rates from the Bulli Seam on the average are about 2 litres/min/metre length of borehole. But when shear zones are intersected, the flow rates could be as high as 8 litres/min/ metre length of hole. Shear zones can be picked up from pressure measurements 50 - 60 m away and this could give sufficient time to drill through these zones and drain them in advance. Systematic drainage of Bulli Seam at West Cliff Colliery could eliminate or reduce frequency of outbursts considerably. At present drainage holes are being drilled systematically in the seam, with drainage installations on the surface. Gas purity of 80% methane is being delivered at the surface plant.
