Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

Tests were conducted in plexiglass and Rockite models to determine if crater blasting could be improved by changes in charge geometry or by alterations to the borehole. Circumferential grooves were placed at various locations in the borehole in an attempt to control the initiation site of the crater. Grooves located at or above the top of the cylindrical charge had no effect on the resulting crater. Grooves placed too low in the borehole were successful in controlling the initiation site but the growth of the fracture system was not sufficient to reach the upper surface. Grooves located at a height of two thirds of the charge length were quite successful in that resulting craters were bigger by at least a factor of six than the normal crater. Testing was conducted in Rockite models to investigate charge geometry. Spherical charges in ungrooved boreholes resulted in crater sizes that were three times larger than those caused by cylindrical charges.

This paper outlines the aims, objectives and means by which a life of mine land use plan was established for Comalco's bauxite mine at Weipa. Comalco realises the need to strategically plan for future mining activities and still minimise the impact of operations on the natural resources of the region. With this realisation long-term forward planning has been implemented to improve the Company's ability to select future sites for mining, industrial use, agriculture, town expansion and conservation purposes.The knowledge of mineral, water, soil and animal resources has expanded dramatically in the past decade. During 1990 Cornalco purchased Geographic Information System technology which has allowed previously collected resource data to be presented in map form. These maps as part of the Life of Mine Land Use Plan are both information based and strategic which can be efficiently updated. The maps allow a broad audience from engineers, geologists, environmental scientists and site managers to government officers and the general public to comprehensively view and scrutinise the operations.

The Ramu chromite deposit occurs in the Marum Ophiolite complex and is the most economically attractive chrom-ite deposit in Papua New Guinea. Its lateritic nickel, chromite and cobalt potential has attracted several compan-ies to prospect the deposit.In the present work, the compositions of chromite in the Ramu lateritic deposit and coexisting olivine-chromite pairs in Marum Ophiolite dunite were analysed with the electron microprobe for Fe, Mg, Cr and Al. The results were used to determine the relationship between the cations in the tetrahedral and octahedral structures of the chromite. In addition, the Fe, Mg, Cr and Al cations of the coexisting olivine-chromite pairs were used to calculate the equilibrated temperatures of crystallisation of the chromite. The variation of Fe", Mg and Cr cation values of the chromite in relation to the calculated temperatures was studied by regression analysis.

A glasshouse experiment was set up to investigate arsenic uptake in rye corn grown in different arsenic rich substrates. Sods of material were taken from various locations and planted with rye corn seeds. The plants grew for 13 weeks after which time the above ground biomass was harvested. Analysis of the rye corn plants showed a narrow range of arsenic concentrations, which did not reflect the arsenic contents of the soil. Comparison of the results from this study with previous work showed the glasshouse rye corn to have lower arsenic concentrations in above ground biomass than rye corn grown in field conditions. The environmental conditions present on the tailings and water-rock interactions were considered the main factors involved with the difference in arsenic uptake between field studies and the glasshouse study. This suggests that bioavailability processes are influenced by a variety of factors and cannot necessarily be predicted by the use of soil factors or glasshouse trials alone as is often done when planning phytoremediation work and mine shut down.

The introduction of many new hydraulic ally and pneumatically powered impact breakers over the past few years demonstrates the growing interest in this technique of breaking rocklike material. The most practical method yet devised to increase the blow energy range of hammer type impactors without incurring weight penalities, is to cushion the impact of the hammer on the tool. This has been achieved in one impact breaker by means of replenisible fluid cushions between the tool and the hammer, and blow energies up to 27,000 joule (20,000 ft. lbs.) have been achieved. Impact rock breaking is becoming an important alternative to the use of explosives in the mining and the construction industry. The design of impactors is discussed and manufacturers data is presented for most of the machines now available. A review of the research and mechanics of breaking rocks with impactors is presented and the benefits of high energy impactors are discussed. The relative merits of three impactor design types are explored with regard to achieving high blow energy.

Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options. The majority of water to the Olympic Dam mine and the nearby townships of Roxby Downs and Andamooka is supplied from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB). There are no permanent local water sources available to Olympic Dam. The use of water from the Great Artesian Basin by Olympic Dam receives considerable attention by BHP Billiton and is extensively regulated by the Government of South Australia. Olympic Dam has robust business management systems in place to ensure the sustainable use of water from the GAB including ISO9001 and ISO14001 systems to deliver the targeted outcomes and obligations of the Olympic Dam Environmental Management and Monitoring Program. The management systems ensure that Olympic Dam retains accountability for its water demand from the GAB over the life of the mine. This accountability has delivered continuous improvement in water use efficiency driven by operating discipline, implementation of water saving projects, using water on a fit for purpose basis including substitution from non-GAB sources, and risk management to prevent and mitigate water supply disruptions to Olympic Dam and Roxby Downs. Since the establishment of Olympic Dam, BHP Billiton has funded a reduction in GAB water flow from bores, previously going to waste, that is greater than the annual average flow used by Olympic Dam.

A major advantage of the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process is the conversion of sulphide sulphur in zinc concentrate to elemental sulphur during pressure leaching. Elemental sulphur can be recovered as a marketable byproduct by flotation of the leach residue, and melting and filtration of the sulphur flotation concentrate. The behaviour and deportment of sulphur during pressure leaching, flotation, and melting and filtration are discussed in this paper using data obtained from the treatment of a wide variety of zinc concentrates in the laboratory miniplant at the Sherritt Research Centre. The quality of the elemental sulphur byproduct and a process for purifying the sulphur are also Presented.

The empirical stope design techniques developed by Mathews et al (1981) and refined by Potvin (1988) and others, have gained rapid acceptance in Australia in the 1990s as a simple, æfirst-passÆ means of designing primary stopes. However, it is recognised that these æstability graphÆ methods can only provide broad design guidelines. Recently published stability graphs (Hutchinson and Diederichs, 1996) encompass a wide range of geological environments, which are not discussed, and the influence of time and blasting practices cannot be easily reviewed. The æscatterÆ in the graphs must reflect, to some degree, different operating practices as well as subtle but important differences in the pre-mining conditions that are not adequately accounted for in the æmodified stability numberÆ. Development of a ælocalÆ, site-specific stability graph may overcome some of these problems. At NormandyÆs Golden Grove Operations, Western Australia, detailed reviews of stope stability performance, including Cavity Monitoring System (CMS) surveys, are undertaken for every stope, with the objective of developing a series of local stability graphs, customised to site conditions and calibrated in terms of æAverage Falloff ThicknessÆ (AFT). Cablebolting of stope hangingwalls is used to develop reinforced æbeamsÆ on each sublevel, effectively dividing the full span into smaller, more stable æsubspansÆ. By analysing stope stability performance in terms of fall-off, cost-benefit studies can be undertaken of the effect of cablebolting and other options for modifying stope spans. The approach used to develop the local stability graphs, and their integration into routine stope design procedures at Golden Grove, is described. The experience gained during stope extraction in the Scuddles orebodies has been successfully applied to the Gossan Hill æC-PanelÆ orebody. This methodology should be applicable to other underground mining operations.

The aim of this work is to assess the performance of different constructive solutions against explosions on the strength of masonry walls. The solutions tested, namely an external metal mesh, a glass fibre film on the external face of the wall and a basalt fibre film located on the inner face of the wall, have low to medium cost and are originally designed for other purposes, like seismic protection. Four cubic boxes 3 × 3 × 3 m were built using each of the solutions and typical masonry blocks. In the tests, a spherical plastic explosive initiated in the centre was placed at scaled distance of 2.9 m/kg1/3, so that moderate damage would be caused on the wall. In order to assess the performance of the explosive, pressure gauges were placed at the wall and at different distances from the explosion. Additionally, vibrations were monitored with seismographs in the far field and a high-speed camera was used to estimate the shock wave velocity during the tests. The resulting damage has been evaluated on 13 points of the external wall of each box using a rebound hammer. Damage maps have been drawn for each wall based on these measurements and damage has been assessed inside the box considering the fragments mass launched during the test. The use of external metal mess leads to a decrease of 34 per cent on damage of the external wall and 38 per cent reduction of spalling. A review of the most widely used global extraction sequences in sublevel is undertaken. The review includes techniques used to extract massive as well as single or multiple steeply dipping tabular orebodies. The paper also deals with thick flat lying orebodies suitable for open stoping. Techniques used to minimise the effect of stress redistributions on a global scale are discussed for all the extraction sequences analysed.

Utilisation of modern 3D visualisation tools, can improve our ability to correlate between different datasets, and thus to produce more accurate geological models. Here, we present an application of such techniques to the Century Zinc Deposit, northwestern Queensland, Australia. This stratiform orebody is the second largest Zn resource in the world (167.5 Mt at 8.2 per cent Zn, 1.2 per cent Pb, and 33 g/t Ag). It is hosted in the Page Creek Syncline affecting Mesoproterozoic shales and siltstones of the Wide Supersequence of the Isa Superbasin. As in other deposits, (eg McArthur River, Lady Loretta, George Fisher and Dugald River), the mineralised sequence is bound by an important regional structure, the Termite Range Fault, which partly intersects the deposit along its Eastern side. This fault is thought have been active during sedimentation and probably also during mineralisation of the lowest part of the Wide Supersequence. The anastomosing geometry of this fault system and crosscutting relationships with other NE trending structures indicate that it was reactivated several times from Mesoproterozoic to at least late Devonian times (>1000 million years in total); as a result, the ore sequence is subdivided into several fault blocks.Using two different computer modeling packages (GOCAD and 3ds max), we have reconstructed and restored the stratigraphic horizon with the highest Zn content, realised a series of isopach maps for each mine scale stratigraphic unit, plotted the three-dimensional distribution of Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe and SiO2, and have begun to evaluate the degree of correlation between thickness changes and sulphide zoning. With this approach it is possible to better understand the timing of mineralisation from a genetic perspective, because the origins of the orebody are controversial. Three-dimensional reconstruction is a vital tool for identification of syn-sedimentary and post-sedimentary fault activity. In conjunction with sulphide precipitation, these are factors that greatly influence the stratigraphic thickness distribution. Post-sedimentary deformation can be recognised directly by core logging and pit mapping, but the effect of tectonic movements during sedimentation (growth faults in particular), that represents a substantial variable when we attempt to reconstruct basin evolution, is difficult to evaluate without this methodology. The 3D models improve our understanding of the local basin architecture, identifying similar grade characteristics at different structural levels and thus suggesting that much faulting and folding are post-mineralisation events. In addition, we identified several growth faults adjacent to thickened layers, representing two possible sedimentary depocentres. These thicker domains apparently relate to the highest Pb content. If further analysis of rocks, thickness and grade distributions support this preliminary correlation, then a syn-sedimentary model for mineralisation might be applied, and would contrast with the sub-surface model for mineralisation of Broadbent et al (1998).

A general review of grinding mill steel liner evolutions/developments in recent times. The driving force behind these developments has been the mill operators desire to minimise the nett cost of their operation. These developments have resulted from a team approach between supplier, operators and reline crews. The move towards larger diameter high aspect mills, faster mill speeds, pebble ports and the use of large diameter grinding media has affected the traditional liner designs, which is placing higher demands on the supplier to meet these new working parameters and expectations. Operators are also taking closer ownership in the liners being supplied, as demonstrated by the development of their own mill liner specifications. Sampling of grain, animal feeds (solid and liquid) including important mineral mixtures in the Danish agricultural sector is subject to an ongoing investigation with the objective of improving existing (suboptimal) sampling procedures. Results from the first six months are presented here; the project will continue for two more years and will include international collaborators (Australia and Canada). The Danish authorities have instituted a system of control analysis, which contains a set of mandated sampling and analysis methods. From a preliminary survey it was concluded that in fact all of the existing sampling procedures are not optimised in the light of Pierre GyÆs Theory of Sampling (TOS).

In almost all copper mining companies, mine planning is done considering different time frames, leading to long-term (life-of-mine) (LOM), medium-term (first three years) and short-term (first year, monthly, weekly, and up to daily plans). Shorter term plans are usually associated with more abundant information, hence models with lower uncertainty. However, they capture more of the variability found on the geological attributes. In long-term models, usually estimation methods tend to hide this variability, providing smoothed interpretations.Medium and long-term plans consider average values for the parameters and optimisation techniques are applied aimed at maximising the economic profit. Short-term plans, on the other hand, are made to comply with the medium-term promises, maximising the use of the available resources (equipment and processing capacities) and dealing with the variability not characterised in the previous planning stages. This generates an important gap between the short-term and the medium and long-term plans. A case study was made using an important oxide copper mine, where the variability found in the short-term plan has a large impact in the productive process, thus reducing the daily ore grade variability is an important goal. In this paper, this planning issue is addressed by creating medium-term mine plans using mixed integer programming which are compared using the output of a simulation of the daily extraction that is aimed at satisfying the daily constraints of the processing plant, the availability of mining equipment and the variability of ore grade. The result shows the expected gap between these mine planning processes, which suggests correcting some of the parameters used in future medium and long-term plans.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. Effective minesite water management requires that this issue be treated as a risk management exercise. The management process is generally far from simple and by necessity must involve a range of personnel covering a siteÆs commercial, operational and environmental interests and responsibilities. The challenge to be collectively faced by these stakeholders is to strike the correct balance between risk and cost. On the other hand, the challenge to be faced by technical services support personnel is to provide stakeholders with information in a format that they can use with confidence. This paper presents the application of continuous operational simulation (OPSIM) modelling techniques to establish appropriate risk profiles for minesite operations. It is necessary that the format of these risk profiles be generic and equally applicable for defining the risk of occurrence for a relatively comprehensive range of activities û eg from of a non-compliant discharge, to the risk of failure to meet production targets. What is more, the profiles need to be quantitatively based and capable of reflecting change in system response to varied operational or management strategies. The techniques presented in this paper are based around a key assumption that long-term records of the climate contain within them sets of sequences that are representative of what can be expected in the future û that is, the droughts, floods, cyclones, good years and bad, long or short, and everything in between. Therefore, if these historical records are run through an OPSIM model for a particular site, then the simulated operational characteristics can be taken as being representative of what can be expected in the future, in the long-term. This lends itself to statistical analysis and translation into the required risk based format. Water Solutions Pty Ltd have been working with Capricorn Coal Management to develop a relatively comprehensive OPSIM model of their operations at German Creek Mine, Central Queensland. Outcomes from the modelling have been used in recent times to provide mine management with risk-based guidelines for both securing and containing mine water inventories. One of the more interesting tasks has been to establish risk based inventory levels that, if reached, would trigger the immediate implementation of a contract for the desalination and re-use of mine water, at predefined rates. Also, lead-time warning of the occurrence of a possible trigger is of importance to operational and commercial planning. To service this requirement the OPSIM model is regularly used to produce lead-time estimates to defined levels of confidence. Case studies of these, and other, applications of the OPSIM model at German Creek Mine are presented in this paper and serve to demonstrate an effective methodology for practical risked based water management.
