In recent years, ultrasonic comminution technology has been developed at the Utah Comminution Center. An ultrasonic grinding device was assembled and investigated. An ultrasonic transducer system has been significantly improved by using a special type of piezoelectric ceramic and preloading to 4.1 x le kPa to obtain maximum strength. The improved system provides constant and rapid vibratory promotion of fatigue fracture resulting in more effective breakage. The design principles for an ultrasonic mill are developed in this paper. Size reduction was successfully achieved in the ultrasonic nip-roll device for a variety of materials. Ultrasonic comminution has repeatedly demonstrated the capability of producing fine particles from a variety of materials. A comparison between ultrasonic grinding and dry ball milling of limestone showed that the ultrasonic device produced much narrower size distributions than the ball mill. This trend is especially obvious in the coarse size range where few particles remain, and in the fine size range where overgrinding is prevented. This behavior might have some interesting applications in areas other than mineral processing like powder metallurgy or material science where narrow and controlled product sizes are required for the successful elaboration of high-technology ceramics and glasses. Ultrasonic comminution has a significant advantage in the accurate control of the product size.

Mercury is precipitated from weakly acidic sulphuric acid plant waste liquor at the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited. Factors determining the choice of process and reagent, as well as details of process development including scale- up, and the time scale of implementation are outlined. The plant is designed for a maximum flow of 120 m3/h.of liquor containing mercury and saturated with sulphur dioxide. Mercury is precipitated by fluidised beds of aluminium pellets contained in lead columns. Liquor is then clarified with plate and frame presses. Experimental work on the mercury precip- itation reaction was conducted in three phases involving a scale-up of 100 times in equipment size. Extensive pilot filtration work was carried out on a 1 m2 press. Scale-up of 120 times was required for specification of plant filters. The basis of scale-up is outlined.

Financial risk analysis provides the tools to examine the uncertainty of capital decisions in new mining ventures. This paper explores the methodology by which financial risks can be studied and quantified. The most commonly used risk evaluation methods, such as sensitivity analysis and discount rate adjustment, are presented as an introduction to a more comprehensive discussion of stochastic methods of discounted cash flow analysis using Monte Carlo sampling. The discussion is illustrated with examples of a stochastic discounted cash flow. The advantages of Monte Carlo sampling in risk analysis are discussed together with its problems, particularly those originating from the correlation amongst the variables that determine the economic output of a mining venture, and the difficulties created by insufficient data, imperfect knowledge and complexity. The paper also surveys the most commonly used software used in risk analysis.

Waste rock piles containing reactive sulfide minerals can serve as long-term sources of acid mine drainage (AMD). Within these piles, many physical, geochemical and biological processes can contribute to the production of AMD. The flow of water, for example, depends on internal pile structure, which depends on the dumping methods used to construct the pile. In this paper, the internal structure and grain size distribution of typical waste rock piles are first reviewed with respect to their effect on internal water flow. A numerical model is then applied to simulate unsaturated flow within a waste pile assuming two primary waste materials, different atmospheric conditions and several geometric configurations. The simulations suggest that water movement can be controlled by introducing fine-grained material layers within the coarser host material. However, these layers should not be horizontal because they can lead to localised high-saturation regions as well as preferential flow favouring the production of AMD. A shallow slope towards the pile boundary may be introduced to force drainage to the outside while maintaining low saturation within the interior, thus reducing the production of AMD.

Activated carbon particles obtained from a number of Australian CIP operations were examined with an optical and a scanning electron micro- scope and an electron microprobe. External surfaces, and polished sec- tions through individual particles, were examined with special reference to materials on the surface and to calcium and gold distributions. Photographs are presented of surface contamination of the particles by salts precipitated from the pulp such as calcium carbonate (calcite), calcium sulphate (gypsum), and a magnesium salt; ore minerals such as quartz, hematite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, pentlandite, and various alumino- silicates; and other substances such as grinding media and a fungus. Calcite was very abundant but the other materials were less common. Contamination in the interior of carbon particles was almost exclu- sively calcium carbonate, and extensive contamination extended to the centre of some particles. A possible mechanism for the formation of cal- cium carbonate inside the carbon particles is noted. Gold X-ray dot maps of sections through carbon particles indicated that gold was distributed throughout coconut shell carbons and that although gold was more concentrated near the outer surfaces of extruded peat carbon particles, it was also present to depths of at least 500 ¦m. Various aspects concerning gold are mentioned below. These have no common theme but suggest points of interest any one of which, if warranted, could lead to development later and elsewhere. 'High level' auriferous gravels The gold deposits of Victoria are commonly classified as being either primary or secondary. Most primary occurrences comprise gold present in quartz reefs, together with other lode-like occurrences in which gold is associated with various sulphides, with or without quartz. Secondary occurrences are derived by physical release of primary gold and subsequent concen- tration of it as a constituent of sediments. Secondary gold deposits may be themselves eroded so leading to third or even fourth generation gold.

This paper gives an overview of the ASHRAE LibHuAirProp, CoolProp and REFPROP software packages. These packages were predominantly developed for heating, refrigerating and air conditioning engineers and the refrigeration and steam power industries, although CoolProp and REFPROP also cover combustible gases. The main aim of this paper is to highlight the existence capabilities and status of the different packages and where they can be used. The paper gives typical examples of the use of these software packages, specifically as Excel add-ins, and provides a comparison of results of typical mine psychometric and gas drainage calculations using the packages and more traditional ventilation and gas drainage calculation methods. The paper also introduces a hybrid method that improves accuracy compared to traditional methods. In typical mine situations, the use of software packages is probably not required; however, with the increasing accuracy of instruments, potential greenhouse emission costs and the sale of mine gas, more accurate measurements and calculations can potentially save (or make) significant sums of money.CITATION:Harvey, T J M, 2015. The large body of knowledge about the relation between chemical process efficiency and mineralogical features is of only limited use. The profession ought to try to improve the methods of using information as well as adding to the knowledge. One attempt isòdescribed. Correlations between process efficiency factors and the mineralogical features of low- grade concentrates have been developed from both a theoretical analysis and experimental measurements. The ultimate recovery of a reactive phase in an inert matrix can be calcu- lated from simple measurements of the particle size, porosity and pore size of the concentrate, and the grain size of the reactive mineral., The rate of recovery, up to 98% recovery, can be calculated from simple measurements of particle size, porosity, proportion of reactive mineral and tortuosity. Some details are given. The correlations are of potential use in process selection and preliminary design. Satisfactory predictions have been made for near-ideal systems. Improvements in the measurement of pore size and tests on more realistic materials are required. The ultimate benefit of the correlations will be determined by the magnitude and frequency of the effects of mineralogical features other than those specified above.

During late 1953 and early 1954, tests were carried out in Sydney metropolitan brickpits in order to determine if some improvement might not be effected in the personal shock, fly rock and possible ground displacement accompanying daily blasting occurrences in the numerous quarrying activities of the metropolitan area. As a result of this preliminary work (Reid, 1954), the Department of Mines decided to further investigate the problem with a view to placing this type of blasting on a sound economical and safe basis for both operator and nearby residents alike. To assist in the work, a Cambridge Universal vibrograph was acquired.Human safety was the first consideration followed by property damage to homes and factories in the extractive areas. Although most of the actual field work has been confined to the Sydney metropolitan area and in particular to the large clay-shale quarries, many cities and country towns have blasting problems associated with the extractive industries, engineering projects both above and below ground level, and in building excavations to which the results may apply.The following figures illustrate how much activity of this type is located around cities and towns:Sydney Metropolitan Area:

The proton microprobe is developing into a vital tool in the geosciences, through its high sensitivity for in-situ detection of trace elements in the ppm regime. This paper will describe the instrument at the CSIRO Heavy Ion Analytical Facility at North Ryde, including features crucial to its successful application in the geoscience. Examples of applications in the basic geoscience and mineral industry related research are described briefly. Conditions required for widescale applications in the minerals industry are Discussed.

The main objective of sulphide flotation in a cassiterite concentrator is to remove sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite and sometimes chalcopyrite) from the ore prior to gravity concentration. Tin losses in the sulphide flotation stage account for a significant proportion of the total tin loss. separate studies of the sulphide flotation circuits of Renison Ltd and Cleveland Tin Ltd were conducted to investigate reasons for the tin losses. Sampling surveys were conducted in the rougher-scavenger and also the regrind-cleaner sections of both plants. In both plants, the rougher circuits recover excessive quantities of liberated cassiterite, while recovery of the desired composite cassiterite-sulphide fraction is low. The regrind mills are successful in liberating the composite cassiterite in the rougher concentrate, but at the expense of increasing the proportion of very fine tin mineral. The cleaner circuits recover between 40 and 60% of the cassiterite received, and this is all lost.

This paper presents the results and findings of geochemical and mineralogical testwork conducted on samples collected from waste rock dumps at two mine sites, located in South Carolina, USA (Site 1) and Sudbury Ontario, Canada (Site 2). Important aspects of the relationship between the physical and geochemical aspects of the dumps are also presented. The overall aims of the project were to 1. determine if the physical and hydrological nature of the waste-rock dumps had any impact on the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the dump materials; and 2. to identify key implications for dump construction for ARD control. The results of geochemical and mineralogical tests indicate that the waste rock at Site 1 had undergone significant in-dump weathering and was relatively advanced with respect to ARD evolution. In contrast, the waste rock at Site 2 had undergone some weathering, however still contained a considerable amount of sulfide minerals. Testing also suggested that flushing of oxidation products at Site 2 had been limited, which therefore promoted the storage of oxidation products at the site. In addition, materials that had a D50 particle size in the range of 5 mm to 30 mm appeared to be more readily flushed than samples that had a D50 particle size of 30 mm. This suggested that preferential water pathways may have developed within the dumps at both sites.

Over the last 20 years the blasting industry has progressed from the stage of being artform to a science as it is today. The use of computers to simulate blasting results has allowed blasting engineers to accurately pre- dict blast results and to optimise their blasting. This paper describes the computer blast simulator called BLASPA and its various applications in blasting. BLASPA allows the blasting engineer to predict blast results given known details of explosive properties, their distribution, rock type and properties, hole size, burden, spacing, collar and subdrill. The simulator runs mathematical situations and outputs numerical estimates of fragmentation and muckpile results. The paper discusses results which show that the mathematical outputs correlate very closely with actual results seen in the field, thus confirming the validity of the simulator. BLASPA can be used to help improve blast design by predicting stress levels in the rock mass and consequent rock breakage.

Improved process control can be achieved through the accurate and reliable on-line measurement of critical process parameters in real time. Over the past few decades on-line analysis techniques have been developed and applied in the mineral and energy industries for the measurement of process stream composition, mineralogy, particle size and flow rates. This has led to increased throughput and product quality while reducing processing costs and minimising emissions. The support of a sustainable mineral processing industry will require the further development of on-line analysis and control technologies. The application of developments in instrumentation combined with improved control strategies will lead to improvements in process efficiency resulting in large economic benefits to the industry, reduced energy usage and lower process emissions. There is a clear convergence of interests in being able to better measure and control minerals processing in terms of the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental impacts. Technology is increasingly becoming available enabling measurement across the entire spectrum of minerals processing from mining to hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. CSIRO is developing a range of these new technologies. A number of these developments are discussed in the present paper, namely: on-line particle size analysis and acoustic emission methods to enhance the control and optimisation of grinding circuits; on-line mineralogy of dry powders and slurries; on-line bulk elemental analysers for application on conveyor belts and in smelters; and the development of new sensing technologies for sorting base metal ores.

Mine life cycle planning and enduring value are taking centre stage to meet corporate goals and deliver socio-economic outcomes for communities over the life of a mine. There is a general agreement in the literature about mining-induced effects on locals adjacent to mining operations and subsequent closure. In response, international regulatory bodies, through the implementation of global agendas, encourage exploration and mining companies to embrace the concept of corporate social responsibility. This concept is designed to provide sustainable outcomes and maintain a social license to operate over the life of a mine. This paper proposes a practical application of the sustainable livelihood approach as a tool for international planning. With this approach as the governing framework, this paper proposes an innovative tool for mine life cycle planning. Based on the findings, this paper discusses the socio-economic impacts of mining and mine closure. It also argues that transferring some of the benefits from mining to create lasting value for communities needs to be considered at the initial stages of planning for the mine and the community. Findings also indicate that conditions such as a strong local government, good governance arrangements, relevant capacity-building for sustainable livelihoods and a diversified economy are important to transferring some of the benefits from mining to create lasting value for communities. The paper is based on a mixed research technique for data analysis and a case study methodology. From E to W the Gympie Province comprises 6 distinct units which can be evaluated as suspect or exotic terranes.

Long Shaft was initially developed using a rail haulage system on every working level comprising battery electric locomotives and granby trucks loaded by rail mounted rocker shovels. Production was commenced using conventional hand held cut and fill mining methods. In an effort to improve productivity and reduce operating costs a mechanised cut and fill stoping method evolved to suit the wider sections of the orebody. To further improve productivity and reduce costs the mechanised levels of the mine are progressively being redeveloped to enable the use of trackless diesel haulage equipment. An added benefit of trackless haulage equipment will be the ability to place development mullock into stopes as Fill.

Comment is made on the application of the legislation and these policies to development proposals in the Northern Territory. A brief review of criticisms by both developers and Land Councils is provided together with responses to these Criticisms.
