Iron ore screening plant productivity is strongly affected by the performance of the shuttle operation, with the control system robustness and associated strategies having a direct impact on utilisation and throughput rates. A number of aspects intrinsic to the methods and technologies traditionally applied on the motion control of shuttles are often observed to decrease the efficiency of the ore distribution process across multiple screening modules, which ultimately impacts the plant’s production. Those include the number of operational scenarios that are unmanaged by conventional discrete control logics which may intermittently lead to undesired events, such as ‘high level alarms’ and ‘low level interlocks’ in the screening bins. This outcome usually demands excessive manual intervention by Control Room Operators. A Reinforcement Learning (RL) Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution was deployed to control the motion operation of the scalping and products screening shuttles in an iron ore handling plant. The RL algorithm was trained in advance to handle multiple operational scenarios and generate optimised outputs. In nominal operation, the shuttles are moved in a modulating and highly predictive fashion over the whole range of safely reachable bins. When the need occurs, the AI control agent deviates from that modulation behaviour, limiting its travel range or moving to other groups or clusters of available bins by employing ‘bin jumping’ or ‘ore break’ strategies. The RL platform capabilities include the ability to learn in real time to account for and auto-adapt to new operational patterns and process changes whilst applying improved strategies for shuttle dwelling times, target setting and speed control. The deployed Reinforcement Learning AI solution has better managed the existing challenges associated with the shuttle operation and control, and resulted in a more efficient ore delivery process, superior operations stability and increased production rates.

This research presents a snapshot and insight into the trends, patterns, and common considerations identified in the current standing of real-time tailings dam monitoring practice. Based primarily on information derived from concurrent research by the author (in form of a Catalogue of Real-time Instrumentation and Monitoring Techniques for Tailings Dams), challenges and opportunities when transitioning to a real-time monitoring system are discussed. Learnings and key considerations between different monitoring approaches are explored, including themes of limitations and advantages that were observed consistently through global supplier feedback.

The implementation of robust, reliable and accurate sampling systems is the key to the successful management of any mineral processing plant. The representative sampling of a mineral processing plant is the only way to determine what is coming into the plant, what is going out as fi nal product and what is going to tails. In plants with high gravity gold components, where high recovery effort gravity circuits are installed, the use of a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) sampling system can assist in the online monitoring of the performance of the circuit. The typical installation location would be in CIP or fl otation feed (ie cyclone overfl ow), downstream of the gravity circuit. A GRG sampling system generally consists of the following equipment: true proportional, continuous drive, linear cross cut sampler, secondary vezin sampler operated on a timer, a batch centrifugal concentrator, and sample dewatering module. The operating philosophy of the GRG sampling system is that the primary sampler operates on a continuous basis, generating a constant stream of truly representative sample. Consep's H&S drive system is unique in its ability to be able to operate in a continuous mode, therefore enabling a continuous stream of representative sample to be generated. The primary sample stream reports to the secondary sampler. The secondary sampler operates on an intermittent basis (nominally ten minute interval), resulting in a relatively small sample volume per shift. Normally the sample volume would be ten to 15 L per shift. The secondary sample rejects stream reports back to the batch centrifugal concentrator. The sample generated from the secondary sampler can be dewatered using a Consep H&S dewatering module. This device produces a final sample that consists of separate filter cake and filtrate. These are suitable for taking directly to the laboratory. The continuous stream of truly representative secondary sampler rejects is passed through an appropriately sized Knelson Concentrator, typically a KCMD7, KCCD10 or KCCD12 sized unit. This unit recovers any available GRG from the stream. The Knelson Concentrator is also purged of its gravity concentrate at the end of the shift. This sample, which is nominally around 1 - 2.5 kg of concentrate, is also taken to the laboratory. At the end of the shift the client will have a measure of the gravity recoverable gold content of the target slurry stream, as well as a true representative sample of the complete stream. Through the addition of a Knelson Concentrator to an otherwise typical sample station, it is possible to generate a true measure of the performance of your gravity circuit. This will take the guess work out of the daily variation in gravity circuit gold recovery, as the site knows whether the changes are due to gravity circuit equipment performance, or due to the natural variation of ore GRG contents. Maintenance planning can also be designed around the system, as the site will have a composite sample to measure the performance of the circuit, therefore indicating where performance has dropped and maintenance is needed. The Argyle AK1 orebody was discovered in 1979 and subsequently found to be a large, economically viable reserve with high grade diamondiferous ore. Production began via an open pit operation at the end of 1985 and has continued for some 25 years to present day. This, however, will come to an end in the next few years with production moving to an underground operation via block-cave mining methods.A series of studies from 2001 - 2005 was carried out; diamond drilling commenced after approval in 2006, from an exploration drive to determine the likelihood of the current proposed block cave operation.In 2006, development of the block cave project began, in order to realise the part of the orebody below the extent of the open pit mining operation.Development of the block cave technique, comprising an undercut level beneath the target zone of the orebody with subsequent extraction level 15 - 20 m beneath, relies largely on a number of block-caving parameters (hydraulic radius, rock type, structure and orientation of stress and grade of the orebody). These all have an influence on cave ability and eventual profit of the operation. Evaluation of further potential for taking this orebody beyond the block cave phase with options such as sublevel-caving are being considered for the UG-2 portion of the resource/reserve. Diamond drilling for this work is currently under revise.The challenges faced in transitioning form the surface operations to the underground, comprising a changing workforce, converging development drives, underground aquifers, major excavations and transportation of ore via automation are intriguing.

The Hidden Secret ore body is located within the Mt Charlotte underground mining system in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Mineralisation of the Hidden Secret ore body is lode style and therefore differs from the typical economical mineralisation mined at Mt Charlotte and consequently demanded a novel approach to the mining methodology. The ore body is lens like in shape, extending 200m along strike, 210m vertically, and dipping at 55 degrees. The lode width varies from 1.5m at the extremities to over 22m in the central zone of the ore body. Average grade is 3.4 Au grams per tonne. The initial mining methodology was Modified Avoca utilising Longhole Open Stoping with pillars, in a bottom up stoping sequence. However, as Hidden Secret became better defined and wider than initially modelled, it was identified that a high portion of gold would remain in the pillars and other mining concerns emerged such as remote backfilling large open voids and potentially unsafe vertical standoff distances between levels and wide open stopes. A re-evaluation of this method was undertaken and a new approach adapting a variation of Avoca methodology was identified to remove the rib pillars and replace them with a sill pillar separating the 4 levels into 2 distinct blocks. This new approach provided an immediate advantage by removing the bogger backfilling activity from the same level of the active stope front, enabling stope drilling and prepping to occur during the backfilling cycle. Bogging productivity has also improved as the fired ore is funnelled to the draw point by the backfill rill, significantly reducing the requirement for remote bogging thus improving bogging productivity. This mining method is currently in progress in the first of the two mining blocks and is on track to realise the targeted recovery of 7,700 ounces from the rib pillars.

Recent advances in the disciplines involved in simulating large mining operations provide increasingly precise and accurate methods for the study of cave mechanics; however, in large regional-scale models, hydrological aspects are often neglected or studied independently from the mechanical problem. There exists a great demand for a unified approach to study and simulate both the mechanical and hydrological phenomena that allows for a more detailed understanding of the effects of groundwater flow, dewatering and the impact on block cave mining operations.This paper presents a numerical framework that combines three-dimensional regional-scale hydrological simulation techniques for groundwater flow, together with non-linear continuum–discontinuum rock mechanics models, provides such a unified modelling approach. The underlying simulation technique is based on a coupled parallel solution formulation adopting single-phase fluid flow formulations into a discontinuous, strain softening and dilatant finite element model. This approach is adopted for the presented case study of a realistic block caving example in a simplified unidirectional coupling formulation, to investigate the effects of the mechanical analysis on the hydrological response. Here, particular emphasis is on the non-linear coupling of the deformable and strain-softening solid skeleton and fluid phase; eg the change of hydraulic properties with evolution of damage in the rock mass and large-to-intermediate scale structures due to ongoing caving operations. Zinc-Lead-Silver (Zn-Pb-Ag) mineralisation at the George Fisher Mine occurs in multiple structurally-disrupted stratiform orebodies hosted within a mid-Proterozoic sequence of calcareous siltstones and variably pyritic shales (e.g. Valenta, 1994; Chapman, 2004). The geological model for the mine has been constructed based on a large number of stratigraphic domains which have been defined using recognised patterns of the constituent rocktypes, aided by recognition and mapping of K-rich tuff marker beds (TMBs). The continuity of these domains has been affected by the presence of several sets of faults which are extensional in the plane of stratigraphy, leading to the common occurrence of fault-related stratigraphic gaps in drillholes. Recent improvements to the detail of the geological model have led to significant improvements in the head grade of ore at George Fisher, with relatively small loss of metal. Recognition and accurate logging of these domains requires a high level of knowledge and expertise amongst mine geologists. In order to aid this process, the George Fisher mine installed a Minalyzer CS (core scanner) on site, with the aim of using high resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) geochemical data and core photography to increase the speed, accuracy and consistency of the site geological logging system. This contribution describes some preliminary results from a research project aimed at using the Minalyzer CS XRF data to perform high-resolution rocktype identification and domain boundary mapping in drillcore at George Fisher. "Sandfire Resources NL- (‘Sandfire’) DeGrussa definitive feasibility study (DFS) identified geometallurgy as a major factor in achieving optimum plant performance at the DeGrussa mine. A geometallurgical initiative was created to proactively investigate this issue, and a key initial achievement was the 2013 paper by Condon et al (2013) on developing a working geometallurgical model from first principles. Significant advancements in Sandfire’s geometallurgical understanding since that publication now shape how information is presented and communicated.The main geometallurgical parameters so far identified as critical factors affecting plant performance are Cu:S ratio, iron sulfide mineralogy, talc carbonate content and sphalerite content. Apart from specific mill strategies, geometallurgical issues have been managed through communication between departments and strategic run-of-mine (ROM) pad management.This paper uses the current theories of geological evolution of the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit at DeGrussa, to discuss the variability between the orebodies C1, DeGrussa (sea floor mounds) and C4, C5 (sub-sea floor replacement) to highlight the different issues each orebody is expected to encounter when processing.A zone of altered low-grade mineralisation surrounds the main orebodies at DeGrussa, referred to as a halo. Talc minerals are often patchy within this halo and often cause significant recovery issues during processing. This halo has been successfully modelled using MgO as a proxy. The ability to model the talc material assists with both identifying potentially problematic zones for processing and geological interpretation of the ore deposits evolution.Early in geometallurgy studies at DeGrussa it became apparent that it would be useful to identify processing performance prior to mining. This necessitated the incorporation of specific sulfide species into the mining block model. These attributes are interpolated from the logged sulfide estimates allowing a clear picture of the abundance of each mineral type within a defined area.In conjunction with the block model a geometallurgical factor (GMF) graph was developed, identifying sulfide mineralogy based upon mineral assays. These two recent additions to the model provide a clear picture of the nature of the ore sources that will be presented to the processing plant.The future of geometallurgy at DeGrussa will see these tools used to aid mine scheduling with a view to further improve processing recoveries.CITATION:Butler, C, Dale, R, Robinson, S and Turner, A, 2016. In this paper current net present value (NPV) based mine valuation techniques that take into account market and private risk are discussed and analysed. Potential pitfalls that arise from the application of a portfolio, market or commodity based risk metric to a mining project are identified. An alternative non-simulative framework for quantifying and factoring market and private risk in NPV calculations is proposed and then applied to a hypothetical case study in an attempt to overcome identified pitfalls. Mathematical proof that a static discounted cash flow (DCF) calculation can underestimate or overestimate mine NPV is presented, the conditions for each are outlined and the degree of underestimation defined.CITATION:Dube, T Y, 2012. In skewed distributions seen in many geochemical data sets, samples at the extreme ends of the distribution are often termed ‘outliers’. Samples considered as outliers can often make exploratory data analysis and resource estimation more difficult and less reliable. Such outlier samples may be legitimate because they are part of a natural high- or low-grade tail in the distribution. How these samples are identified and dealt with in resource estimation can often be a material issue for the Competent Person, particularly under the latest edition of the JORC Code (JORC, 2012). This paper discusses the identification and characterisation of outliers and high- and low-grade tails and proposes methods to deal with them in estimation.For dealing with outliers and high-grade tails ,very simple approaches, such as top-cutting through to more advanced geostatistical approaches, are discussed. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are also outlined. Some examples of how the underlying geological understanding of a deposit influences the view of outliers and low-/high-grade tails is provided. The importance of documenting, communicating and challenging a given geological model is also discussed. Many mine accidents will affect the mine ventilation system when they occur. At present, there is a lack of monitoring means to capture the occurrence of accidents in time by monitoring the ventilation system, so as to take emergency measures to reduce the loss of personnel and property. Pressure wave is an elastic wave existing in air. Most accidents in mine will cause obvious changes of pressure wave. It is an innovative idea to monitor the occurrence of accidents in mine by measuring pressure wave. The development and functions of the pressure monitoring device and related software are introduced in detail. The pressure wave monitoring test is carried out in San Xavier underground mining laboratory, and the D-wave and S-wave waveform data are collected. The waveform characteristics are analysed, and the main frequency distribution of the pressure wave is found to be within 1 Hz by using FFT. At the same time, the influence of the propagation distance of the pressure wave on the waveform is analysed. The propagation velocity of D-wave and S-wave are roughly calculated, and they are 279.6 m/s and 397.3 m/s respectively. S-wave is slightly faster than D-wave. Although there are errors and uncertainties in the test, the test verified the feasibility of the existence and collection of pressure waves in the ventilation roadway, and provides a method for the future study of the propagation of pressure waves in the mine ventilation system.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (Cliffs) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three separate hubs and trucked to Koolyanobbing. There it is crushed and screened to lump and fines finished products and railed to Esperance port for export to Asian customers. Cliffs is renowned in the marketplace for its consistent product quality. In 2010, 9 Mt of ore was exported to Asia.Over the last three years, Cliffs has systematically refurbished its product quality system (PQS), to improve efficiency of production while maintaining its high standard of product quality. Particular attention has been given to reducing inventory, which has required significant modifications to the production process design.In redesigning the production process, emphasis was placed on maximising the application of the inherent blending in each of the production process steps and dedicated blending was only introduced where essential. Simulation modelling and statistical analysis of process capabilities were utilised to develop a system that optimises inventory, minimises rehandle, eliminates several decision-making steps and maintains a pull focus throughout the value chain.The new planning functions are now fully integrated and effectively control long-term grade variability rather than relying on long-term stockpiling. The production process design and the daily crusher blend plan are used to control short-term grade variability. With the upgrading of the planning processes the accuracy and consistency of algorithms for lump per cent and lump and fi nes grades became more important and an increased geometallurgical function has been added to the company.The continuous stockpile management system was upgraded to increase the effectiveness of the daily crusher blend planning process and is now the sole intervention point in the production process for grade-based decisions. Grade control systems were modified to utilise advances in software and geostatistics to deliver accurate short range planning models. The reconciliation and sampling systems have also been refurbished with an emphasis on practical application and feedback loops.Accountability and transparency are provided by management reports that are generated from a centralised data warehouse and the introduction of a corrective action system. Standardised reports are available to all stakeholders and a quarterly KPI scorecard assists the management review process.The successful rejuvenation of the PQS has culminated in operational efficiency through the implementation of an integrated end-to-end process flow. Shareholder value is maximised through maximising recovery of the resource and minimising costs. Customer focus is maintained by reliably delivering product with acceptable and low grade variability.

Record iron ore prices and a renaissance of infrastructure in the Pilbara have Flinders Mines poised to move from explorer/developer to an iron ore producer. The potential of the company’s Pilbara Iron Ore Project was first highlighted by the announcement of Rio Tinto’s Caliwingina North deposit to the north and the Fortescue Metals group’s Serenity deposit in the southeast. The success of Flinders Mines’ exploration has been based on incorporating landscape studies into an existing geological framework, and using this to understand the iron-rich materials that were emplaced during the Tertiary. The development of the Delta and Eagle deposit resource models highlights this process. There are three main mineralisation styles at the project; detrital iron, channel iron and bedded iron deposits. They have textural and mineralogical similarities with comparative deposits in the region. Gaining an insight into the geological processes unique to detrital iron deposits and more distal channel iron deposits has been important to understanding the geometallurgy of the mineralisation. The model sits comfortably with other regional oregenesis models and allows a contextual framework to be developed around the timing of deposition of the Fe-rich detritus and pisolitic nodules that dominate the deposits. The exploration model also allows Flinders to explore more effectively for bedded iron mineralisation developed prior to, and since the development of the Tertiary weathering landscape.

In this study, the use of carbon neutral biochars as reducing agents in the pyrometallurgical treatment of nickel slag was investigated at 1400°C in order to recover valuable elements such as copper and nickel from the slag. A large amount of slag is generated during the nickel matte smelting. Nickel slag contains valuable elements such as copper, nickel and cobalt, which can be recovered. Disposal of this slag results in loss of resources and may cause pollution of the environment. It is important to retrieve these metals for environmental and economic reasons. In this study, the slag was reacted with non-fossil reducing agents (biochar) which were produced from hydrolysis lignin and black pellet biomass pyrolyzed at 600 and 1200°C and with metallurgical coke for comparison. The reduction experiments were done at 1400°C for 15, 30 and 60 mins under inert gas atmosphere. The samples were quickly quenched and analysed with Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The results showed that the use of biochar resulted in faster reaction kinetics in the reduction process compared to coke. The fast reaction kinetics is attributed to the relatively high content of volatiles in this biochar, leading to gas formation and thus mixing of the sample material. Moreover, thermodynamic modelling was also performed using FactSage™ to simulate equilibria with different amounts of biochar. The metal to slag distribution coefficient calculated from the results of thermodynamic modelling were consistent with experimental results. In addition, thermodynamic calculations confirmed that nickel is reduced rapidly and it deports to the metal alloy phase. As the reduction progresses or extra reductant is available for reactions, more iron is deported to the metal phase. The calculations also revealed that Zn vaporises into the gas phase.

Implementation of a well planned and executed Management Operating System (MOS) can result in widespread improvements to operational performance but its success relies heavily on the investment by and engagement of the larger workforce with the project. Over the seven month period of the Telfer MOS project, significant improvements were achieved; a 20% increase in monthly hoisted tonnes from the open stope and sublevel cave operations and a 45% increase in square metres of ore extracted from the narrow vein operation. The Telfer MOS was undertaken with the intention that the project wasn’t solely about producing new tools, it hinged on the investment and behaviours of the personnel affected by these tools and alterations. To ensure that the project ran smoothly, the Byrnecut senior leadership team and their operators were heavily involved in the project’s development. In the initial stage, Telfer’s MOS project determined that the quality and accuracy of the information received in the form of radio calls to mine control and completed operator plods was questionable. This required an overhaul of the data collection and verification process in the form of altered operator plods, which was then cross referenced with the operator’s radio calls to mine control. Once the data collection and verification process was implemented, the Telfer team was then able to produce several tools with the aim of providing visibility to the data being captured and its implications. These tools allowed the mine foremen to determine whether equipment was being under-utilised and where they should focus their production efforts to meet monthly targets. Whilst the initial underground project is now complete, the implementation of MOS across the entire site is ongoing with significant operating improvements occurring.

Aitik, a Boliden owned and operated open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand production from 18 Mt per year today to 36 Mt per year copper ore during 2010. The challenge for the mine operation is to double production with a planned increase of the shovel and truck fleet of only 50 per cent. This will be achieved through improved shovel and truck utilisation and productivity. In early 2005 Aitik started projects to enhance the utilisation of truck engine hours and to reduce fuel consumption. Both projects were successful, within a year efficient2 utilisation of engine hours increased from 60 per cent to 75 per cent and fuel consumption was reduced by six to eight per cent. The truck utilisation project focused on minimising idle truck hours by for example four operators on three trucks thus reducing idle engine hours to minimise lost time for breaks and shift changes. Other measures included focusing on improved dispatch usage, parking trucks when overtrucked, etc. Eco-driving was a project together with Swedish Road Administration with the objective to combine economical and environmental savings. To keep the focus on eco-driving a reward was set up for the shift team with the lowest fuel rate over rolling 15 weeks periods. Both activities included a comprehensive training program for mine foremen, dispatchers and truck operators focusing on efficient use of trucks from economic driving to optimised truck dispatching and minimising idle engine hours. Online monitoring of trucks activities and fuel consumption combined with continuous reporting gave shift foremen and management a tool to discuss and follow trends and individual shift team performance. The combination of close monitoring of mainly organisational practices and operator training resulted in significant productivity increase and lower operating costs without any capital investments.

Understanding the mineralogy and liberation of gold particles in an ore is key to the development and optimisation of gold processing operations, being cyanidation or gravity separation. This can be achieved through basic historic geological information, gold deportment studies, chemical speciation and metallurgical test works. The present study assessed the nature of the occurrence of gold particles (mineralogical composition, liberation, associations and surface chemistry) and its effect on the process route (cyanidation and gravity separation) of a typical paleo placer gold ore deposit within the Tarkwaian Rock system. The investigative approach used involved chemical assay, quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) and quantitative evaluation of minerals using scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN). The ore samples (A, B, C, D, E, F) used were obtained from six active pits of a gold mine working on this orebody. The results of the mineralogical analysis revealed that the ore is highly oxidised and comprised quartz (>80 per cent) and Muscovite mica (>6 per cent) as the major mineral phases in all the samples. Trace amounts of hematite, kaolinite and todorokite were also identified in all the samples. The chemical analysis showed presence of gold (Au) in all the samples with samples B (3.62 g/t) and C (3.96 g/t) containing the highest concentrations. Trace amounts of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), sulfur (S), aluminium (Al), arsenic (As) were also detected in all the ores. The QEMSCAN mineralogical liberation and gold association results revealed that the gold grains were relatively coarser in all samples (P80 > 80 µm Au in size) except F (P80 < 32 µm Au in size). Gold grains were highly liberated especially in sample B with the majority of the locked gold grains forming complex associations. All the samples responded well to cyanidation and gravity separation except samples C and F, respectively.

The behaviour of tailings under cyclic loading has an impact on the stability and deformation of tailings dams and a good understanding of the cyclic behaviour of the tailings under earthquakes is important for tailings engineers and tailings operators for the design and safe operation of tailings dams. This paper presents an investigation into the cyclic behaviour of tailings using both laboratory cyclic direct simple shear (DSS) testing and numerical modelling. The laboratory testing involved cyclic DSS tests on gold tailings and zinc-copper tailings under different loadings and loading frequencies. The gold tailings specimen tested at a higher loading frequency and a higher cyclic stress ratio experienced spontaneous liquefaction during cyclic shearing and the zinc-copper tailings specimen tested at a lower loading frequency and a similar cyclic stress ratio exhibited ductile behaviour and liquefied due to cyclic mobility. The liquefaction behaviour of the tailings was modelled using an advanced constitutive model (UBCSAND), which was developed specifically to model soil liquefaction and strain softening under cyclic loading. The constitutive soil model presents the nonlinear soil behaviour under dynamic loading using a hyperbolic stress-strain relation. Dynamic analyses were carried out using a finite difference program FLAC. The cyclic stress-induced excess pore water pressures measured in the laboratory were modelled using numerical simulations of the laboratory tests under different loading conditions. The results of the non-linear dynamic analyses demonstrated the capability of numerical modelling of cyclic shearing induced excess pore water pressure and the onset of the spontaneous liquefaction. The laboratory investigation and numerical modelling technique provided the key properties and parameters for the dynamic analyses to assess the stability and deformation of tailings dams under design earthquake events. A method is presented for calculating the number of cycles of stress to failure of a drill rod from operating variables; a mathematical analysis by Cooper of the stresses present in drill steels is applied to the forged collar, i1i-in. hexagonal hollow drill steel in common use in Australia; and an estimation is made of the dry fatigue limits at various points along a drill rod.It is shown that these calculations predict failure at a &apos;point where failure rarely occurs, and do not predict that failure should occur where it does in practice. The reasons for this anomaly lie in the neglect of bending stresses in the stress calculations, and in failuredue to corrosion fatigue at a preferred section rather than to simpler fatigue under non-corrosive conditions.INTRODUCTIONIt has long been recognized that failure of metal sections by fatigue is influenced both by the number of cycles of stress imparted to the section (N) and by the magnitude of this cyclic stress (8).
