"Suboptimal performance of clusters of hydrocyclones (cyclones), relative to the performance of the individual cyclones that comprise the cluster, is a common phenomenon. The primary cause is well known: uneven distribution of the slurry feed into the individual cyclones. The direct result of uneven distribution is that each cyclone in a cluster performs somewhat differently. Hence, some, if not all, of them do not work at their intended operating points, and the classification is not as sharp as intended. The impact on grade, recovery and milling efficiency will vary depending on the duty of the processing circuit, but the most immediately apparent consequence of uneven distribution is a difference in wear rates in the individual cyclones; this exacerbates the problems of unequal performance of the individual cyclones. In severe cases, and as differential wear proceeds, flows from the individual cyclones may become visibly different. Uneven distribution, once the phenomenon was identified, was seen to be a significant issue in the high-solids hydrocyclone cluster in the ball mill recycle section of Evolution Mining’s Edna May Operation (EMO, Westonia, Western Australia) gold processing plant. In 2012, a FloCEP® hydrocyclone feed distributor system was installed to alleviate the problem. Over the next four years of operation, this innovation has proven its value in the metallurgical and maintenance areas. Individual cyclones now wear at the same rate, greatly reducing the need for operator intervention, as well as increasing overall plant availability through minimising unplanned maintenance. The costs of the installation can be justified by savings in maintenance alone, though the greatest value, as is described in this paper, is in allowing the plant to produce consistently closer to its operational design limits. The FloCEP® system is a low maintenance, readily installed retrofit, based on two patented devices that are combined with complementary proprietary design methodology allowing customisation for specific flow rates and slurry particle properties. Operations in an underground drill site have to co-exist within the mineÆs ventilation and operational system. The space requirements of a drilling operation have to be adapted to the limitations provided in available site space, which is usually defined by standard mining operations and geotechnical influences. These limitations affect borehole design, equipment positioning in the site layout and possible interactions with mining equipment and services such as water and power supply.The ventilation requirements for drill sites and the means employed vary with depth of the site, space and likely presence of gas. All drilling operations provide a particular service for the mine and in each case, drilling must operate in a manner which controls all gas, water and cuttings returning from the borehole. The various standpiping systems employed have evolved under differing influences and must cater for conditions during and after the drilling operations.The influences that gas content, pressure and flow, rib stability, cleat direction, borehole length, potential water pressure and flow have on a mineÆs operation and ventilation systems have to be considered in the design of standpipe length, diameter and fittings. Past history has a strong influence on common practice while worst case effects of a possible in-hole event should be catered for.This paper describes the early drilling systems and their limitations in ventilation and gas management. The drill site dimensions and set-up are discussed in the context of roadway conditions, equipment layout, ventilation and logistics. The use of standpiping to control all returns from the borehole is illustrated by referring to likely scenarios in a drilling site to achieve the most effective sealed depth to accommodate the worst case possibility of intersecting high pressure gas or water during the drilling operation. The Cooljarloo North Mine has been shaped not only by operational and processing challenges, but by climatic and economic factors. This paper outlines some of these challenges and discusses how the operating strategy has been altered over time to mitigate the impacts.Since commissioning the wet concentrator in 1999, there have been many typical operational challenges to maximising valuable heavy mineral (VHM) recovery. These include: varying in pit feed grades, different slimes types and volumes, sizing extremes between VHM and trash minerals and decreased equipment reliability handling rocky ore. These issues were successfully mitigated by: in pit extraction strategies, upgrade of the de-sliming circuit, thickener modifications and flocculent changes, installing upgraded and additional spiral capacity, and various Feed Preparation Plant screening initiatives. Combined with the ingenuity, persistence and patience of the operating team, VHM recovery >95 per cent has been achieved.However, typical processing challenges have not been the only hurdles. Reduced rainfall and water availability has necessitated the strategic co-disposal of tailings and slime to increase the speed of water recovery: groundwater abstraction and water storage strategies have also been altered. With an observed reduction in the speed and magnitude of groundwater recharge, overburden backfill scheduling has become a priority mine planning function.Combined with the above challenges, the prevailing foreign exchange rate and mineral product prices have impacted profitability. At the height of the Global Financial Crisis in 2009, major changes to the operating strategy were made to maintain a viable dry mining operation in 2010. Working with the mining contractor the existing scraper and semi-fixed Feed Preparation Plant set up was replaced with a movable in pit dozer trap facility. The end result of changes to the mining method and primary screening was a ten per cent reduction in unit costs. This article will elaborate on some of the above mentioned challenges and successes achieved over the past ten years of operating the Cooljarloo North Mine.

The Savage River open cut magnetite mine is located in rugged terrain in densely rain forested northwest Tasmania. The mine and concentrating plant are both in the Savage River valley. Pickand Mather Incorporated (PMI) operated Savage River as an open cut magnetite mine between 1966 and 1996. Acid rock drainage (ARD) was first noted in the last ten years of the operation, leading to elevated concentrations of heavy metals downstream of the mine. When operations ceased in 1996, PMI returned the mine to the Tasmanian Government along with a remediation fund of $11.4 million. At that time, the assessed cost of remediation was in excess of $120 million. As a result of the ongoing ARD contamination and to facilitate both a new operation and effective remediation, Goldamere Pty Ltd negotiated an agreement with the Tasmanian Government in 1996, which resulted in the Goldamere Act and the Goldamere Agreement. The agreement has allowed Australian Bulk Minerals (ABM) to remediate the Savage River mine in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government while re-invigorating a previously closed mine by providing ABM with an indemnity against past pollution. ABM can configure its mine and waste planning activities to maximise remediation benefits without fear of future litigation for past mistakes. The effect to date has been the development of a long-term strategy to remediate the Savage River and short-term remediation works such as water management, which provide benefits to the ecosystem. After five years, the Savage River is no longer significantly impacted by ARD for 30 kilometres downstream and trout are now reported within the reaches of the mining lease. The arrangements between ABM and the Tasmanian Government are an example of a genuine WIN WIN situation where co-operative environmental management of the site results in significant improvements and where the æregulatorÆ and the æminerÆ are working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals. The end result is a significant benefit to Tasmania.

Traditionally pit optimisation and scheduling is carried out assuming that the resources, the commodity prices and production costs are all known. Once the pit contour and the mining schedule have been determined, geostatistical simulations can be used to assess the impact of the uncertainty in the resources on the pit design and the schedule, and likewise stochastic simulations can be used to test its robustness to fluctuations in costs and prices. But it would be more interesting to have a dynamic procedure for optimising the pit as the resources become better known and as economic factors such as commodity prices and costs evolve over time. This paper presents a novel approach for doing this. Rather than working with millions of small selective mining units, it was decided to work with large blocks, called macro-blocks. Mining sequences are defined as the quantities to be extracted from each macro-block in each time period. Feasible mining sequences are mining sequences that respect the accessibility constraints, and also the geometric constraints on the amounts that can be extracted from any one block over time, or from all the active blocks at a given time. Having defined feasible mining sequences, their mathematical properties were studied. It was found that natural breakpoints occur in the sequences when one set of blocks have been completely mined out, thereby opening up access to others. It was discovered that families of sequences exist, and that they are convex and closed under certain types of row permutation operations. Convexity is an advantage when optimising. The closure property opens up the possibility of mixing and matching subsequences of rows in the sequences. Another interesting property is that the sequences form branching families, rather like the binomial and trinomial trees used to model prices in finance and in real options.It is easy to generate large numbers of feasible mining sequences randomly. A two-step procedure is used to find the best one (or the best few) using three economic criteria: expected NPV,the probability of a negative NPV, and the percentage of years when the cash flow is negative. The procedure was tested on a synthetic gold mine based on the characteristics of the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso. The results were encouraging.

This paper reviews recent advances in geophysical tools for mineral exploration. It does not restrict comments to methods which are usually applied in the tectonically active belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean, where geophysics has often been secondary to geological prospecting (eg visual recognition of surface alteration) and drainage geochemistry; but considers geophysical tools applied to a broader range of both deposits and terrains. For example, the subdued topography of much of Australia and Canada has lent itself to the development and extensive application of airborne methods. In Australia, deep weathering and transported cover have necessitated the use of geophysical methods to not only detect anomalies but also to map and understand basement geology. This same weathering has caused specific problems, particularly for electrical methods, but recent improvements in instrumentation, processing and visualisation have largely overcome them. A great deal of geophysical data is now being collected by government agencies, often from the air, and made readily available to explorers. In several Australian states it is free, often on line, and in almost all cases it is relatively cheap. These regional data sets are often augmented by more detailed local surveys in areas of interest. Although æanomaliesÆ are still important much more is being done with the high quality data which is now available The results are used for geological mapping, to test geological hypotheses, to construct detailed 3D geological models and, together with fluid flow modeling, to predict optimum locations for mineralisation.

Lihir operations of Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) are on Lihir Island (PNG) which is located approximately 900 km north-north-east of the national capital Port Moresby. The mine is located within the Luise Caldera of the Luise Volcano which is located on the east coast of the island. The caldera is an extinct volcanic crater that is geothermally active. Volcanic activity on Lihir Island is limited to remnant hydrothermal venting in the Luise Caldera in the form of hot springs and fumaroles. Steam and gas (including H2S) naturally discharge within the pit area and along the Kapit beach and near shore region. The hydrothermal reservoir temperatures can reach 100°C at the water table and exceed 200°C at depth. Newcrest maintains a Geo-hazard Management Plan to identify and manage the various geotechnical and geothermal hazards on-site. The major geothermal hazard to mining at Lihir is the occurrence of geothermal outbursts, which have occurred in the past with varying intensities and caused two ‘near misses’, production delays and material losses.

Viscosities of CaO-aluminosilicate ternary melts were estimated using a structure-based model. The model considers depolymerisation effects and related breakdown of the silicate network structure on the addition of metal oxides to the melts. The predicted values are in good agreement with the experimental values over the whole temperature and composition range.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

The Vienna Wood hydrothermal is hosted by mid-oceanic ridge type basalt in graben morphology and is located in the Central Manus Basin. The hydrothermal field is about 300 metres in diameter and consist of a sulphide mounds and tall huge death and active chimneys. From the three distinct ore types collected from the Vienna Wood site, the dominant ore minerals recognised are pyrite, wurtzite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, Fe-oxide and gangue minerals of anhydrite, gypsum, barite and silica. The consistencies in the paragenetic sequence and in the spatial distribution of the sulfides across the three ore types suggest that similar hydrothermal process exist across active and death chimneys. Fluid inclusion studies reveal a homogenisation temperature of 190-260¦C and an average salinity of 5.1-5.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. The pH of the hydrothermal fluid ranges from 4.2 to 6.1. Bulk chemical analyses indicate that the mineralisation in the Vienna Wood can be classified into the Zn-(Cu-Pb) type of mineralisation. The tenors of the ore and mineral assemblage resemble those of the Mid-oceanic ridge system and ancient ophiolite hosted massive sulphide deposits of Cyprus and Oman.

The Mt. Wright Underground Mine is located near the town of Ravenswood in North Queensland and is operated by Carpentaria Gold – a wholly owned subsidiary of Resolute Mining Limited. The establishment of the world’s first Sub Level Shrinkage (SLS) mine from a tradition Sub Level Open Stoping operation has proven to be a geotechnical challenge which has required tailored solutions to overcome unique issues. This paper will be broken into two distinct sections that will outline: a brief overview of the mining method and how the SLS method was chosen; and how the SLS is managed and key geotechnical learnings. The story of the world’s first SLS originated from the need of a bulk mining method to ensure the viability of Mt. Wright into the future. Traditional bulk mining methods such as; Block or Sublevel Caving were originally ruled out due to the low natural ‘cavability’ of the orebody and the proximity of the orebody to existing major infrastructure (Decline, Ventilation Rises and Egresses). The first section of the paper will outline the key geotechnical information that helped decide the SLS method in addition to how continuous backfill influenced the design. The second section is intended to address issues that the geotechnical engineers encountered since the inception of the SLS. The feature topic of this section is mining induced stress. Like most bulk mining methods, Mt. Wright had success when the production front was running parallel to the stress (production front being ‘shadowed’ from the stress). This was until a design change, forced by a splitting ore body resulted in this shadowing effect becoming harder to achieve. As a result, rehabilitation and production hole re-drilling become a regular occurrence, which teamed with a strict set of access controls made the production cycle longer and harder to complete. Drilling and sampling are responsible for most of the costs during mineral exploration, especially in multi-elements and polymetallic deposits, such as iron, manganese and bauxite deposits. On these deposits, often it is necessary to estimate multiple attributes at several granulometric fractions, ie distinct particle sizes. This paper investigates the effect of sampling at a close spacing grid only the head grades for the multiple chemical species in iron ore deposits. The remaining required data at the various grain sizes are sampled at a sparse grid. The derived geological model is checked for precision and accuracy comparing the output obtained against a model obtained using a complete isotopic data set including head grades and chemical analysis at each granulometric fraction analysed at all sampled positions. Among the several tested alternatives, the best procedure for dealing with the posed problem involved utilising the correlation coefficients between the grades at distinct fractions to obtain an isotopic database prior to interpolation. Cokriging was the method used, based on the intrinsic coregionalisation model. Estimates were obtained with the quality needed for the proposal of the study. Results showed that at least 50 per cent of the blocks were estimated with errors less than ten per cent relative to the grades obtained at the reference model, using only 15 per cent of the granulochemical data employed to obtain the reference model. The methodology also preserved the correlations between the attributes in their several granulometric fractions on the estimated model.

The precise measurement of NO2 was historically difficult in road tunnels, hence criteria and design analysis was based on converting from NOx concentrations via a set NO2:NOx ratio. The reliable direct measurement of NO2 is now possible, however design analysis is still dominated by emissions tables and formulas specified in terms of NOx. For converting from NOx to NO2 in a road tunnel environment in Australia, the ratio has typically been assumed to be ten?per?cent. This has generally been based on the recommendation in PIARC (2000) and on the ‘average’ value cited in PIARC (1995).Determining this ratio is important as changes in engine technology and in-tunnel pollution criteria along with improvements in CO and particulate emissions control, may mean that NO2 will become the driving factor for future ventilation requirements. Correct selection of this ratio can directly impact the ventilation capacity and system design.Recent research has indicated that choosing a constant ratio of ten?per?cent for all tunnels may not be appropriate. The in-tunnel ratio has been estimated to be as much as 20?per?cent to 30?per?cent and depends on the location in the tunnel, the type of ventilation system and the traffic/fleet characteristics. This paper discusses the effect of some of these parameters on the NO2:NOx ratio in road tunnels.The findings indicate that the ten?per?cent upper limit on the NO2:NOx ratio in PIARC (2000) may be a conservative value for design purposes for longitudinally ventilated road tunnels of typical length in Australia. A value of seven?per?cent to eight?per?cent may be more appropriate in some circumstances. However, the value chosen will depend on the specific tunnel in question and the confidence in traffic conditions expected. RME has a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by modifying liner design for maximum life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. Following the introduction, the first section of this paper provides an update describing recent and significant developments within RMEÆs range of Mill Relining Systems, the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The second section outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ commercial model, developed either intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

Sprayed concrete has played an integral role in underground rock support for nearly a century. However, concrete is also considered to be one of the biggest environmental problems in construction and mining, largely because of the high carbon footprint of cement and aggregates production. This is driving the industry to find ways to cut concrete usage where possible. Improving sustainability by cutting concrete material consumption also reduces application time and costs. Improving concrete properties can make it possible to design thinner linings, but as awareness of safety and longer design lifetimes are driving developments in the opposite direction, it is not realistic to see this as a major factor in cutting concrete consumption. More accessible solutions are focusing on layer thickness control and minimising rebound and wastage. Digital technology and innovation offer excellent tools for improving sustainability while optimising other aspects of the spraying process at the same time. A digital layer thickness control system gives near-real-time information to the sprayer operator with full coverage of the sprayed surface. This enables the operator to achieve consistent layer thickness on the first pass, in comparison to the traditional methods of overspraying with the aim of achieving sufficient layer thickness, probe drilling after the concrete has set, and respraying at a later stage if needed. Operator competence is the single biggest variable in a successful sprayed concrete process, affecting rebound and wastage levels. Unfortunately, the learning curve to become a master sprayer is quite steep and training on a real sprayer and real concrete requires a significant amount of time and money. Training in a virtual reality (VR) environment enables operator training to be carried out in a low-risk environment and provides a way of measuring performance and assessing and certifying the operators. After the VR training period, a novice nozzle operator has the basic understanding to start working on a real sprayer, and an experienced nozzle operator can benefit from the possibility of assessing their performance.

The main access decline at Carrapateena mine was excavated through two different underground aquifers. In these areas of decline, pressurised water finds the path of least resistance through the rock and into the excavation. In some locations the ground water would upwell underneath the roadway resulting in rapid deterioration of the running surface. The deterioration of the road was so rapid that the two areas of decline required significant roadworks every single shift or it would become impassable by mine traffic. With a full fleet of underground trucks hauling to the surface, managing these sections of roadway was impractical and unproductive. The site team resolved this issue by installing Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) to the affected sections of decline. RCC is a specialist concrete product that is delivered to the site near dry and is installed using a grader and roller similar to road base. This product can be installed quickly and be trafficked within hours of installation, making it ideal for mines with single access declines and unfavourable road conditions. RCC roadways were successfully installed at Carrapateena mine in conjunction with under-road drainage. These roadways have proved to be a very effective solution which requires minimal maintenance and are resistant to water ingress from the aquifer. This paper discusses the technical aspects of the RCC, as well as the practical implementation of the solution as a whole.

Loubert Witbank is a defunct coal mine situated near Ermelo in South Africa. Mining ceased in 1992, and within a short period acidic decant occurred, with a significant impact on the regional catchment. The problem was studied during 1996/1997, and the site remediated in 2001/2002 by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry. Remediation involved primarily submerging of carbonaceous material, backfilling of voids, and capping of the site. Acidic water with high iron levels was also neutralised and discharged. The project was used to assess the cost benefit of different options to the downstream users, from which target expenditure was derived for the various improvements. The cost benefit analysis for neutralisation provided a basis for the investigation of low-cost neutralisation options that are robust enough to be applied in a remote environment.

In an open pit mining, ensuring stability of rock slope has been one of the major challenges. As the instability of rock slopes can results in slope failures; consequently, endanger the lives of workers, affect mining operations, and often lead to economic losses. Therefore, it is practical important to study the stability of rock slopes to ensure safe, smooth, and effective mining. The stability of rock slope of about 130 m height at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry, which has experienced slope failures four times since 1996, was assessed. The rock mass at the quarry is consists of mainly limestone, schalstein and slate rocks intersected by clay seams of about 70 m thick at footwall of the rock slope. Previously, the effects of limestone excavation at the foot of the rock slope and shear failure due to rainfall infiltration have been investigated. Although clay is widely known to plays a vital role in the stability of slopes in engineering projects including mines, but its impacts on slope deformation at the study quarry are not adequately examined. Therefore, the present study addressed the impact of presence of clay on slope deformation at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry by employing both field displacement measurements and numerical simulation. Firstly, surface displacements measured by automated polar system (APS) for over eight years were analysed to understand the overall characteristics of the slope deformation. The measured results show that the displacement gradually decreases with time. The maximum displacement of about 100 mm was observed at middle of the rock slope. Secondly, the effect of deterioration and plastic behaviour of the thick clay layer were simulated using two-dimensional finite element method (2D FEM). The simulated results reveal that the clay exhibited deterioration by water contact and plastic behaviour arising from mining activities at the footwall of the clay zone. Based on the characteristics of the measured and simulated results, it was found that the displacement induced by the effect of deterioration of clay is more noticeable at the north side of the quarry whereas displacement induced by excavation is quite significant at the south side of the quarry if clay behaves as an elasto-plastic material.

This paper reflects on the author’s experience working in site-based technical and management roles over a 29 year period, and the past 12 years in internal and external consulting roles. It discusses the author’s experiences and observations of operations management, and the significant value of the technical specialist’s role in providing management with information on what to base tactical decisions, which may or may not be part of a defined strategy.The landscape of mine management changes with the cyclical nature of commodity prices driving operating and capital prudence, as operations change their focus from expansion and growth to staying in the game. The role of the mine manager and management team in navigating through these changing times, attitudes and stages of the project life can influence the success or otherwise of many projects.Technical knowledge is one of the key drivers in realising or destroying the value of a project or operation. As managers focus on people management, management systems and processes, recognising and understanding value in underlying technical knowledge, and getting back to the fundamentals/basics, can be overlooked. In reaction to the fluctuating commodity cycle, managers implement changes through optimisation, fast tracking or parallel streaming, expansion projects and changes in the application of technology. These responses occur against the background of changes in the appetite for risk, acceptance of project uncertainty and changes in personnel which result in a loss of knowledge and experience – often at critical times.This paper shares the author’s experiences and lessons learnt in dealing with and observing these issues.
