This paper describes the risk management strategies adopted to control unstable slopes in the east open pit of the Daye iron ore mine. Extensive experience has been developed over the last 35 years in the management of pit wall instability resulting in the successful excavation and reinforcement of pit slopes over 350 m in height.

The environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations of mining companies promote the consideration of water and land resources as well as the post-mining employment opportunities following the cessation of mining operations. This work aims to outline the potential for a mining operation to use their brackish mine water resources to support microalgae production, generating high-quality organic carbon sources to support their mine rehabilitation and closure outcomes. Microalgae production is an established commercial process for high-value products including vitamins, cosmetics and food supplements. On mine sites, microalgae production offers several major environmental and social opportunities: (i) carbon capture, (ii) metalliferous water treatment, (iii) acid mine drainage prevention, (iv) beneficial reuse of brackish mine water, (v) accelerated soil formation and (vi) post-mining employment (Levett et al, 2023).

The Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited. The Operation lies within PanAust’s 2600 square-kilometre Phu Bia Contract Area in northern Laos. Commencing production in 2012, Ban Houayxai is operated by PanAust’s Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining. PanAust owns a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 per cent. The Operation mines an intermediate sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposit and comprises an open-pit feeding ore to a conventional carbon-in-leach process plant. Metallurgical recoveries for gold and silver are approximately 75-85 per cent and 55 per cent respectively. To year-end 2017, the Operation had poured 0.65 million ounces (oz) of gold and 4.7 million oz of silver. The Ban Houayxai Ore Reserve supports a mine life of approximately four years from the end of 2017. The Ban Houayxai deposit is in an early Permian volcano-sedimentary unit which is part of a late Carboniferous to early Permian (310–270 million years ago) volcanic-plutonic sequence of the Truong Son Fold Belt. The deposit formed when hot saline (240–415°C, 2.7–13.0 weight per cent NaCl equivalent) fluids ascended from a geologically fertile island arc porphyry into overlying volcanics along a fault or faults in the early Permian (290–256 million years ago) (Manaka et al, 2014). East Nelson and Marlborough, in the northeast of the South Island, contain a wide variety of metallic minerals, including gold, silver, copper, chromite, antimony and scheelite, but no sustained metallic mining industry has evolved. Gold was the most sought-after mineral during the first century of European settlement and numerous discoveries were made but these failed to live up to expectations. While traces of gold are widespread in east Nelson, including in quartz veins in Nelson City, no payable deposits were found. In Marlborough the probability of a gold discovery had initially seemed remote but all this changed with the finding of rich deposits in the bed of the Wakamarina River in 1864, which provided a much-needed boost to the provincial economy. However, the decline of gold mining in Marlborough began virtually as soon as it had commenced. Extensive floods in 1865 hastened the exodus of miners to the profitable new fields of the West Coast.

In the raisebore industry, there are two known methods of removing large diameter reamer heads once the reaming of an underground shaft is complete: 1. Lower the reamer head to the base of the shaft and use a thermal lance to cut the drill string and drag the reamer away from the hole. This method exposes the person doing the job to falling rocks from the unsupported mineshaft, a hazard which is difficult to control and has caused fatalities. 2. Install breast plates in the backs above the reamer head at the top of the hole, and use air hoists to lift the reamer out of the hole. Steel beams are then placed across the hole which the reamer is lowered down onto, dragged forward away from the hole, disassembled, and removed. This method is time consuming, expensive, and complex in the controls required to ensure safe completion of the job At Carrapateena, the air hoist method had been successfully used, however, with the cost involved and the complexity of this process, development of an improved and fit for purpose reamer removal method was pursued. OZ Minerals collaborated with Pybar to develop an industry first application of Enerpac SL100 lift and shift technology; a track mounted system with hydraulic lifting units that can both lift the reamer out of the hole and tram it back along the tracks away from the hole. A key component of turning the idea into a reality was by establishing a truly collaborative relationship between client and contractor. When the SL100 mobile gantry arrived, it was set up in Adelaide and trialled with the whole raise bore crew attending the two-day workshop and risk assessment; a rare opportunity for drillers. There have now been five successful reamer removals with the SL100 mobile gantry at Carrapateena. It has proven to be an efficient process with the entire process from setup to demobilisation taking less than 48 hours. This new way has completely removed hot works and uncontrolled hazards from working at the bottom of a shaft. It has also saved the reamer stabiliser from being cut and thus wasted. Exposure to the open hole has been minimised significantly as assembly of the SL100 is completed well forward of the open hole. This new process is exponentially safer, quicker and cheaper.

"OZ MineralsÆ Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator is located 650 km north-east of Adelaide, 130 km north-east of BHP BillitonÆs Olympic Dam operation and 130 km south-east of the regional township of Coober Pedy, in the Gawler Craton region of South Australia. The concentrator was built in 2008 and commenced commercial production in early 2009. The Prominent Hill concentrator is comprised of a conventional grinding and flotation processing plant with a 10 Mt/a ore throughput capacity, operating well over the design rate of 8 Mt/a. Increased throughput rates have seen a decreased water recovery from the tailing thickener due to operating above design. Subsequently, greater pressure was placed on the site water balance and bore field off-take rates due to increased evaporation losses from greater volumes of water reporting to the tailing storage facility. This resulted in a trade-off between water availability and milling rates as part of the operating strategy.Two projects were implemented to increase the tailing thickener underflow density, thus improving water recovery directly back into the operating plant, reducing water losses via evaporation and decreasing the reliance on the bore field system operating at maximum rates to maintain mill throughput. The two projects were: tailing thickener feedwell redesign implementation of the Manta Cube control system.This paper discusses the background, implementation and benefits attained from these two key projects. Combined they have allowed a two to three per cent increase in tailing thickener underflow density to be consistently achieved, which has allowed greater water recovery. As a result, the processing plant has been able to operate at higher throughput rates when required, with greater water availability in the process plant recirculating system and a reduction in occurrences of the plant being æslowed downÆ due to water supply shortfalls. Rope guides, consisting of ropes spanning between anchor points at the top and bottom of shafts, have frequently been considered as a viable alternative to fixed guides, comprising buntons and guides. However, their design has generally been based on empirically derived rules, arising from European hoisting practice of 50 to 100 years ago. This paper describes a recent technology development project aimed at defining and quantifying the important forces acting on rope guided conveyances, calculating the resulting displacement of the conveyances and assessing whether the displacements are acceptable or not. The paper describes the derivation of aerodynamic force coefficients based on CFD analyses and other significant forces acting on the conveyance and rope system. The conveyance displacements may be calculated using computer simulation of the mechanical system, or approximately using simplified equations given in the paper. Measurements taken to confirm the suitability of the proposed formulation are described. The combination of displacements and assessment of the rope guide system design are proposed, based on the ratio of design clearances and the predicted displacements.

This paper investigates the causes of low effective utilisation of the production drill fleet at the Telfer Underground Gold Mine, as measured by the percussion hours per shift. The first part of this paper focuses on a site time and motion study conducted to accurately identify shift time allocation and optimal drilling parameters (manual versus automatic, and suitable flushing mediums for varying ground conditions) as well as quantifying the business potential for automated or remotely operated production drilling. The second part of the paper focuses on the rate of successful hole completion for automated production drilling during shift changes. Two main areas of drill optimisation were identified. Firstly, a site-specific drilling procedure was established so as to ensure that all operators were drilling using optimal parameters. Total production metres per rig increased by 10.7 per cent as a result of the implementation of this standard. It was observed that a 25 per cent faster overall drill cycle was achieved using air mist flushing, and that manual drilling achieves a 19 per cent faster overall drilling cycle in comparison to automated drilling. Secondly, routine provision to the maintenance department of automation reliability reports that outlined the principal causes of unsuccessful hole completion led to an increase in production metres of a further 4.1 per cent, measured between January 2007 and August 2007. First hole automation reliability increased from 39 per cent to over 77 per cent over the same time period. Second hole automation completion was increased to 74 per cent, leading to a higher proportion of production achieved through automated technologies.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. Industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. Longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin-encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised that an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called ‘spin-to-stall’ (STS) into Australia. STS was first introduced by Anglo American Coal in South Africa, where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African STS resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible. Therefore, a new STS development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia. Increasing attention is being focused by regulators and industry on the residual environmental liabilities associated with mining projects following site relinquishment (termed surrender in Queensland). Even sites that have been rehabilitated to a high standard and to the satisfaction of the regulator are not completely risk free and may require some degree of ongoing management. As well as ongoing monitoring and maintenance costs, considerations should include how costs associated with potential risk event occurrence can be quantified and, if considered material, how provisioning should be undertaken to minimise the risk to the state and to taxpayers. In Queensland for example, once a resource site is fully rehabilitated and meets its environmental authority conditions or rehabilitation completion criteria, the tenure and environmental authority can be surrendered. During the surrender process any ‘residual risks’ resulting from the use of the site for the resource activity must be considered, and, if requested, a payment given to the government to cover any ongoing management and risk costs. Accent Environmental, in conjunction with Lane Associates, was engaged by the Queensland Government as part of the government’s financial assurance framework reforms to develop an innovative, ‘one-size fits most’ Residual Risk Calculator for the Queensland resources industry. The calculator is an Excel-based tool that uses detailed user inputs to estimate post-surrender management requirements and liability at resource sites. If residual environmental risks associated with rehabilitated mine sites can be identified, quantified and managed through pragmatic regulatory tools and effective provisioning, site relinquishment/surrender can be achieved without compromising environmental and social outcomes or exposing the state to unreasonable financial risk. The effective management of residual risk can also help facilitate operations as well as relinquishment/surrender of sites where a ‘walkaway’ solution may not be otherwise technically feasible.

Magnetic separation equipment has long been used to upgrade and beneficiate a wide variety of minerals and materials. Over the years, significant advances in both wet and dry magnetic separators have improved their operability and separation performances, broadening their use.But no one answer exists to the question: what is the right type of magnetic separator? For many minerals, including ilmenite, both process routes may be viable. There are technical, production, as well as economic reasons for choosing wet versus dry. However, recent developments illustrate that a new generation of wet magnetic separators is approaching performance once seen only in dry magnetic separation. With quality and production performance becoming similar, the choice between wet and dry magnetic separation is not as cut and dry as it once was.

At its simplest, the classification and characterisation of an orebody is a matter of Where, What and When. Where and with what spatial resolution are measurements taken, What properties are measured, and When are the data acquired, processed, and delivered to create the most value. This paper delves into how existing and near-term advances in measurement technologies, field automation, and whole-system-digitisation are combining to open new routes for mine and exploration productivity improvement. Commencing when the initial exploration hole is dug, the advancement in deployment of survey technology—from expert-operated, to driller-operated, to driller-integrated—is used to demonstrate a template for adoption of higher technology measurements. We then introduce and discuss the multi-use measurement as offering outsized returns from a single measurement run, highlighting two new technologies that acquire rock strength while drilling and downhole assay data as examples. For rock strength, we highlight a novel approach to determining Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) while drilling, its relationship to and advantages over Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), and how it offers utility to multiple downstream processes. For downhole assay, we detail how a back-tophysics approach to Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) analysis offers significant advantages over other measurement methods and earlier implementations of PFTNA, generating a rich data set that can significantly extend and improve the information on which mining decisions are made. Finally, we discuss the possibilities enabled via optimising data delivery, collection, and curation— noting a fundamental limitation of historical systems and exploring the possibilities that will be unlocked by soon-to-market solutions that better enable Orebody Characterisation data to (virtually) move in space and time with rock material post-blasting. Ultimately, the value of optimising the Where, What, and When from point of measurement to the moment it generates maximum value will create greater life-of-asset production for a lower cost and energy input.

This paper is a step in the direction of developing a computer model of the near source dispersal of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in planetary boundary layer (PBL). Since Surface Mine blasting is done during daytime, study of daytime dispersion in convective boundary layer (CBL) is relevant to the mining engineers. The scope of this paper covers dispersal after the blast in any type of PBL ie stable, convective and neutral but only under weak wind condition. Mathematical analysis of the dispersion of vertical dust column has been carried out during weak wind conditions in a tropical meteorological environment. It is noted that dust concentration reaches its maximum value some distance away from the point of blast, immediately after the blast (t*=1) and thereafter rapidly decreases. After a short interval from the time of blast at t*=11 the dust concentration shows linear decrease in concentration with distance. Dust concentration also rapidly drops during the interval t*=1 to t*=11, thereafter, rate of drop is nearly the same at any distance from the point of blast.

Major diamond pipes discovered in Western Australia in the late-1970s exhibited a number of unique features that not only resulted in Australia becoming the largest diamond producer in the world in volume terms by 1986 but also changed geological thinking on the primary occurrence of diamond. They were: - lamproite is an alternative primary diamond host to kimberlite. - the extremely high mean grade of the Argyle lamproite pipe at 5 ct per tonne. - the tectonic setting of the lamproite pipes in mobile zones mar- ginal to the Kimberley Craton in contrast to the traditional African setting within stable cratons. Diamond was one of the earliest economic minerals discovered in Australia but 128 years elapsed between its first recognition and the first Australian economic pipe discovery (Argyle). During that period some 200,000 ct of alluvial diamonds were mined in Australia (mostly in New South Wales), but such alluvial output is insignificant on the world scene where annual production today runs at 95 million ct of natural stones some 76010 of which comes from primary pipe sources such as Argyle which alone produces 30 million ct per annum. Of particular significance therefore is the geological nature of the primary diamond source rocks in Australia. The Argyle and Ellendale Pipes are lamproites, differing from kimberlite in their mineralogy and geochemistry, and characterised by the presence of typical lamproite minerals such as leucite, priderite, potassic richterite, and the abnormally high content of chemical elements incompatible with ultramafic rocks. Carrapateena is a copper-gold sub level caving operation located in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. One of Australia’s largest undeveloped copper deposits, the project will be a 4.25 Mtpa underground operation, with an estimated mine life of 20 years (OZ Minerals, 2017). First concentrate production was achieved in December 2019, within the Iron Ore Copper Gold (IOCG) hematite breccia complex. The Carrapateena orebody is overlain by 500 m of barren sediments of the Stuart Shelf, which hosts two aquifers. The cover sequence is dominated by shales, quartzites and sandstones in order of thickness. The cover sequence presented challenges to the mine ventilation system as a result of highly variable rock strengths. On this basis, the site developed the first vent rise, Vent Rise 5 (VR5), earlier than required as a means to test the empirical stability assessment. Assessment for VR5 was completed in 2017, with the mine yet to develop through much of the cover sequence. Due to the geotechnical data available at the time, it was anticipated that break out would occur within the vent rise walls as a function of the low strength Woomera shales. VR5 was developed to 4.5 mᴓ in late 2018. The timing of the VR5 development enabled the site technical team to calibrate empirical stability factors for the assessment of future vent rises. At the time of writing, four additional vent rises have been successfully developed to a diameter of 5.5 m. No significant overbreak has been observed within any of the vent rises. This paper is intended for geotechnical practitioners designing large-diameter vent rises in geological environments similar to the Stuart Shelf where a similar approach to vent rise design may be warranted.

The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

This paper describes the development of an approach to sustainable development for application at the feasibility study stage for a proposed bauxite mine near the community of Aurukun, south of Weipa on the western coast of Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia. The general environment for development was complex in all dimensions. In particular, the socio-demographic profile of the Aurukun community (population 1200) characterised it as being amongst the most disadvantaged communities in Australia. The traditional owners of the area, the Wik and Wik-Way people, were at the forefront in the efforts of Indigenous people in Australia to secure land rights over the past 30 years, and they had previous experience negotiating an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (the Western Cape Communities Coexistence Agreement) with Rio Tinto Alcan, the operators of the Weipa bauxite mine. Through this they had shown a well-founded sense of entitlement with respect to the development of resources on their traditional land. The Queensland State Government had recently cancelled an existing mining lease over the bauxite resource as the holder of the tenement had not fulfilled the terms of a development agreement that had been in place for 30 years. The Government was anxious to avoid any future æbankingÆ of the resource, and had decided to offer tenure to the resource on an international competitive basis, subject to the requirements of the Commonwealth Native Title Act 1993. This would require a negotiation process with traditional owners and potentially involve companies with whom the traditional owners had no existing relationship (typically developed during the projectÆs exploration phase) and who possibly had no project development experience in Australia. As well, the State Government envisaged an approach to development that drew on the significant work that industry and other stakeholders had undertaken over the previous ten to 15 years, commencing with the mining, minerals and sustainable development (MMSD) process. This work was aimed at rectifying acknowledged deficiencies with industry recognition of stakeholder interests, in particular with respect to environmental management and socioeconomic development. The approach adopted aimed to define the strategic community interests and sustainable development outcomes to which the development of the resource would be expected to contribute, and to embody these within an easily usable management structure that could be applied to each stage of project development from feasibility study through to mine closure. The logical framework (AusAID, 2006; ICMM, 2005) was the management tool utilised to order the identified interests and desired outcomes. The structure included components aligned with the key areas of development interest expressed by the community, and the initial baseline sustainable development plan (SDP) developed established component objectives, outcomes, indicative outputs and activities for the feasibility stage of the project. This established an objective framework to guide potential bidders when developing their response to the State GovernmentÆs Request for Proposal. The paper will describe the evolution of the competitive process and the parallel process for development of the SDP. While the institutional environment was politically and socially complex, the use of simple visual representations of the environment and the analysis and ordering of issues, objectives and criteria through methods such as stakeholder analysis and the logical framework approach, enable the development of a dialogue on the contribution that the development of a mining project can make to sustainable community development, and for the development of an agreed program of community support to capture the contribution. The use of the logical framework was found to have good functionality for plan development. Achieving plan outcomes though, is highly dependent on the skill of key project personnel in facilitation, team building, conflict resolution and leadership, as well as their ability to influence the behaviour of key stakeholders with the capacity and authority to require the integration of local economic development criteria in to key project development decisions.

In 2000, after six year intensive exploration for high-grade haematite deposits, Rio Tinto included the channel iron deposits (CID) as a specific iron ore target in the Hamersley Province iron ore exploration program. The exploration model was simple and based on the then current understanding of CID genesis. Fundamental to the model was an interpretation that CID deposits after their final accumulation stage could be entirely concealed in their channels. Inversion to mesas and therefore exposure of the CID profile would only occur in areas where the modern drainages follow the ancient and have significantly incised their current bedrock. The model took encouragement from observations at Bungaroo Creek, where large CID accumulations occur in a deep valley incised in the Wittenoom Formation concealed below recent valley fills derived from the surrounding BIFs. Also, in the headwaters of the Yandicoogina system CID occurs below a more recent cover of calcrete and clay. After a number of failed or partially successful attempts, exploratory drilling in 2002 in the Caliwingina valley in the northern Hamersley Range identified significant CID mineralisation. Subsequent drilling programs from 2003 onwards revealed the presence of a large CID system, which stretches from the middle reaches of the Caliwingina Creek to deep under the sediments of the Fortescue Valley, a channel length of more than 30 km. Although the drilling is still somewhat sparse, the geological resource estimation suggests that Caliwingina is presently the third biggest CID system of the Pilbara (after Yandicoogina and Bungaroo Creek) and is of comparable size to the premining Robe River system (1.6 Bt), with comparable Fe-grades to the Yandicoogina global resource grade (57.7 per cent Fe). Large detrital and canga deposits overlie the Caliwingina CID, or interfinger with it, and although the economics of these are presently unfavorable, could ultimately present a low-grade iron resource of slightly smaller size to the CID mineralisation at Caliwingina Creek. Together with the recently discovered Serenity and Solomon deposits, as well as Cabbage Gum Bore and other smaller occurrences, the Caliwingina Creek deposit is part of a major new CID district in the central Hamersley Ranges, approximately halfway between Yandicoogina and Robe River. Although exploration in this new district is still underway, the preliminary indications are that this area will provide a total CID resource well over 3 Bt, and is on a par with the major known CID systems in the Hamersley Province.

The introduction reviews the tunnelling carried out in Singapore since the early 1980s. Between 1983 and 1990, Phases 1 and 2 of the mass rapid transit system were constructed. These included some 20 km of bored and cut and cover tunnels together with 18 underground stations. Some particular points of interest in this massive project are briefly commented upon. Reference is also made to other underground or underwater schemes undertaken during this period such as the proposed large caverns project and the submerged tunnel to Pulau Seraya. A description of the subsurface works, now under construction in Singapore, follows. This includes an all underground North-East railway line 20 km long with 16 stations. At a budget of US$ 3 billion, this is a major civil engineering undertaking. Another project is the extension of the railway to Changi Airport which involves 3.5 km of twin tube tunnelling together with a major underground station which is fully integrated into the airport terminals. An on-going program of further major railway extensions over the next 10 to 15 years is in place and an outline is given of some of the most important underground sectors. Other proposed projects such as the underground roads system and the deep level sewers are briefly described. Together they demonstrate the very significant volume of underground construction scheduled for the next century in Singapore.
