In view of the lack of phase equilibria data of vanadium-bearing oxide system and the desirability of them for design or optimisation of vanadium extraction process, the phase equilibria relationships of V2O3-FeO-SiO2-CaO(15 mass per cent) system were determined experimentally and then an isothermal section phase diagram of this system was constructed. Totally, 81 samples of different composition were equilibrated at 1623 K for 48 hours in iron crucible under Ar atmosphere. The equilibrated samples were quenched quickly in cold water, and then the phase constituents of all the samples were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) measurements.

As the iron ore/magnetite boom gains momentum, it is particularly important to question established past trends and explore the potential of alternative design options. Traditionally, ‘rule of thumb’ methods have been used to size dewatering equipment. Greater consideration needs to be given to technological advancements and specific throughput testing of each ore body type based on innovative developments.This paper will describe how an innovative approach resulted not only in significant savings in capital cost and site work hours but also delivered a truly optimised design for the thickener duty at Karara. Test work also played a crucial role and a comprehensive test work program on the ore samples showed the scale-up benefi ts of new technology in thickener designs. Working closely with the Karara team during the laboratory testing proved the old sizing theories for iron ore/magnetite processing have been superseded with the knowledge and results of the industry’s newest feedwell technology. Increased solids flux and rise rates in the testing process proved very successful, resulting in signifi cantly reduced thickener sizes and lower capital expense.Mechanical design considerations such as removal of underflow and pump access led to a preference for an above-ground thickener confi guration, and the economics of a completefabrication and installation package favoured steel construction for the thickener units.The ultimate choice of the bolted/fl anged tank methodology provides both economic and timely solutions for the site installation including reduced man power and quick and safe site-work. A benefits comparison between this design and other fabrication and installation procedures will also be analysed in the paper.

Paste backfill has been adopted by many underground mines in North America and a growing number elsewhere. Paste offers a number of advantages. This paper suggests wider applications of paste technology to surface tailings disposal and water management. Advantages include improved overall stability, potentially easier permitting, smaller water inventory and earlier reclamation. It may be feasible to use the same plant to prepare backfill and to dispose of surplus tailings. Example cost models are given to illustrate potential applications.

Reflectance spectroscopy is now an established technique for mineral exploration and ore characterisation. The efficacy of the technique as a tool to characterise the main iron ore and gangue mineralogy at African Minerals Ltd’s Simbili iron ore deposit in north-central Sierra Leone was tested through reflectance spectroscopic analysis of 13 000 pulped drill reserve samples using CSIRO’s HyLogger-1™ system. Specifically, integration of reflectance spectral data with more traditional methods of analysis, such as geochemical analysis and Satmagan measurements, characterised the mineralogy (ie hematite versus goethite) of the oxidised ore at Simbili, quantified the Al associated with goethite and hematite and evaluated the distribution of the main gangue minerals – kaolinite and gibbsite. Relative changes in the Fe2+/Fe3+-bearing oxide and silicate mineralogy, based on mineral indices derived from reflectance spectroscopic measurements, appeared well-related to changes in the ore profile mineralogy consistent with the main ore types identified at Simbili, as representative of an oxidised banded iron formation sequence. Spectral calibration models, developed from a well-characterised training set of mineral mixtures, representative of the oxidised ore zone mineralogy were used to quantify the distribution of Al associated with kaolinite and gibbsite and the iron oxides, goethite and hematite. Combining these mineral spectral parameters with compositional data enabled the differentiation of Al-substituted goethite and hematite and resulted in the identification of low Al-bearing, or ‘clean’, goethite and hematite from high Al-bearing, or ‘dirty’, goethite and hematite. Spectral quantification of the iron oxide Al composition provides a far more rapid means of quantifying the Al substitution in iron oxides at the deposit scale compared to traditional techniques such as X-ray diffraction analysis. It also enables a level of volumetric characterisation and the potential for large-scale (ie three-dimensional) mapping, which was not previously possible with other techniques. The potential of the technique was also highlighted when mapping the distribution of the main Al-bearing contaminants (gibbsite and kaolinite) identified in the oxidised ore zone at Simbili. Delineation of such zones provides a guide to managing the most appropriate processing options (ie upgrade potential) within a mineralogical framework. Three-dimensional modelling of the gangue phase distribution may also allow the mapping of lithological and/or structural controls that may be prevalent at Simbili. This work highlights the value in the application of HyLogging™ technology for rapid resource characterisation, particularly for volumetric identification and mapping the distribution of both the economic and gangue phases, which otherwise would be difficult to achieve. As such, the technique can provide a fast and inexpensive means to evaluate ore and gangue mineralogy at the deposit scale and provide a first-pass assessment of the mineralogy and compositional attributes, with the potential to better predict ore metallurgical properties.CITATION:Wells, M A and Ramanaidou, E R, 2015. The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O. These features indicate that Phase 2 skarn and Cu-Au (REE-U) mineralisation may be related to unexposed intrusions at deeper levels.CITATION:Sha, P, Spandler, C and Chang, Z, 2015. Glencore Coal Assets Australia (GCAA) operates five coalmines in Queensland and has rehabilitated thousands of hectares of mined land across these sites. Accordingly, GCAA seeks to continually improve rehabilitation outcomes over time and work towards progressive rehabilitation sign-off. The ultimate test of rehabilitation success is the attainment of an agreed land-use target, whether for biodiversity conservation or some type of agricultural production, and the ability of the rehabilitated landscape to resist degradation and retain desired functions (eg biodiversity protection or grazing productivity). However, success must be based on documented evidence that can demonstrate adequate progress towards rehabilitation targets and is assessed at appropriate intervals. To assist this task, a stepwise decision guide for the GCAA monitoring program was developed to ensure consistent monitoring data is collected across the range of sites. This presentation will discuss some of the processes that were followed to allow GCAA to identify appropriate metrics to assess rehabilitation success efficiently over thousands of hectares.CITATION:Erskine, P, Fletcher, A and Swart, P, 2016. In 1985, ZC Mines (now Pasminco South) had been unprofitable for some years due to a combination of high operating costs, low metal prices, low head grade and an aging and inadequate mining infrastructure. However, the resource of metal in the ground was still of world class, even after some 80 years of mining. A major study, which was to be of two years duration, was therefore commenced to establish a practical and profitable long term mining strategy and to cost the infrastructure options needed for its support and thus form the justification for a capital expenditure program to take the mine profitably into the 21st century and its second century of operation. This paper discusses the rationale behind the methodology adopted and the nature of the results achieved in one aspect of the study - the determination of the mineable resource and the relationship between the head grade/quantity of the economically mineable resource and the variables of cut-off grade, cost structure, annual production rate and metal prices/exchange rates. The basis of the study was the designing of some 5000 scopes to mine out the entire resource for a range of cut- off grades and the assembly of the detailed physical data thus obtained in a stope-by-stope data base for financial and other analysis. Those scopes which were shown to be economically mineable were then scheduled for two optimum annual production/cut-off grade/metal price combinations to provide life-of-mine cost and value of production cash flows.

There has been an ongoing research on coal and gas outburst for the past two decades at the School of Civil, Mining and Environmental Engineering, University of Wollongong. Research study began with a humble beginning, initially conducting basic laboratory studies on the coal and gas properties, progressing into the determination of gas content of coal by sorption technique and the effect of gas pressures on coal strength. The present laboratory facilities and research interests are extended to include the study of coal permeability and shrinkage properties and their effect of gas drainage characteristics with respect to gas type, and pressures. All the changes are examined with respect to changing in-site geological conditions of the coal deposit investigated. The aim is to provide a long-term support to industry in establishing a data bank for Australian coal deposit characteristics and properties.

Over the past 15 years, the mining industry has begun to incorporate the concepts of sustainable development and sustainable mining practice across the life cycle of mineral operations. This requires addressing economic issues, community impacts and concerns and environmental protection, and is captured in part by the phrase ‘design for sustainability’ (McClellan et al, 2009). Over the same period, the industry has seen a gradual decline in ore grades for many mineral commodities. As a result, large volumes of tailings and mine waste rock are being produced around the world, and it is expected that the annual production volumes of these materials will increase, even if there is not a significant change in the demand for materials.Another related thread of change has been the realisation that societies need to move away from linear economies (raw materials, production, consumption, disposal) towards more circular ones. This will help societies become more resource efficient, which is defined by the United Nations Environment Programme as reducing the total environmental impact of the production and consumption of goods and services, from raw material extraction to final use and disposal. The goal is to create more with less and deliver greater value with less input. Circular economies require thinking in terms of the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, recover, landfill).The challenge is that the waste hierarchy was originally designed to address embodied mineral content in products rather than mine waste and tailings generation. It will need to be reconsidered in a mine life cycle context, focusing on a value-based conception of waste (Van Ewijk and Stegemann, in press).In parallel to these changes, it has remained an imperative in the mining industry to dispose of these waste materials as economically as possible while protecting the environment. Single handling of these materials has been the main target, which reduces the life cycle costs of their management but may make reuse of waste and tailings technically more difficult or economically infeasible.This presentation explores a rethinking of the large volume earthen material waste issue at mines. The underlying theme is that some or all of these materials can be valuable resources for the future that can positively contribute to sustainable development. These resources can offer economic gains to firms, communities and societies; contribute to environmental well-being; enhance social interactions with the previously mined landscape if handled properly; and, with proper policies in place, reduce governance commitments. Each of these topics will be briefly explored. In the present work, the process of dephosphorisation of stainless steel was developed in laboratory scale by adopting a high frequence induction furnace, using BaCO3 base flux. By using BaCO3 - CaO - BaC12 - Fe2O3 Flux of about 110 g/Kg-metal, 30 per cent dephosphorisation degree was obtained a stainless steel containing 18,8 per cent Cr and carbon between 0,08 and 2,0 per cent. In addition, a dessulfurisation degree of 89 per cent was achieved too.

This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

On 26 June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19 000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine, which caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at NormandyÆs zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the mine adjacent to Scuddles, Gossan Hill had progressed to a point where a self-supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high-grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16 July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in situ performance.

Just as geophysics, in the form of 3D seismic and wireline logging, plays a key role in petroleum reservoir management, so too will geophysics play an important role in mining of coal, metals, and minerals in the 21 st century. The commercial and social imperatives driving greater use of geophysics are reduced costs, increased revenues, and enhanced safety. In short, superior utilisation of capital and management of risks. In relatively undeformed sedimentary environments it is possible to adapt petroleum-style 3D reflection seismic to image mines. This has been demonstrated most impressively in the Witwatersrand. Anglo-American, for example, completed a $1 million 3D seismic survey at Western Deeps in order to site a new $300 million shaft with confidence. Likewise, 3D seismic has gained rapid acceptance at Australian coal mines in recent years. Encouraged by these successes, metalliferous mining companies are supporting research in Canada and Australia, as well as South Africa, to adapt 3D seismic for more highly structured, metamorphic terranes. Because the mining industry is far more diverse than the petroleum industry in terms of commodities and geological environments, 3D seismic is not always cost-effective. A plethora of other geophysical techniques can be applied, many of which are employed in mineral exploration. Mine applications of geophysics differ from traditional exploration applications in two main ways: time scales and length scales are shorter, and boreholes are more plentiful. Borehole geophysical techniques therefore play a more significant role, both for logging and imaging. Logging systems detail the variations of in situ physical properties down the borehole at scales measured in centimetres, while geophysical imaging techniques can map features located tens or even hundreds of metres from the sensors. While geologists tend to think of boreholes in terms of chips and core, geophysicists perceive them first and foremost as access paths for instruments. Borehole logging has been employed at iron and coal mines for decades, mainly to accurately define ore boundaries in delineation holes. In base metal mines, Outokumpu implemented logging widely for orebody delineation in percussion holes in the 1980s. The benefit was a direct cost-saving, arising from substitution of core drilling with percussion drilling plus borehole logging. The practice has since spread to other companies. INCO, for example, defines nickel boundaries in blast holes at Sudbury using conductivity logs. The benefits are in the form of reduced dilution and enhanced ore recovery, flowing from a more accurate mine model. Density, natural gamma radiation, magnetic susceptibility, and conductivity are the principal metalliferous mine logging parameters because they can be recorded in both dry and water-filled holes. Sonic velocity is the premier geotechnical logging parameter, given its sensitivity to rock strength, stress, porosity, and degree of fracturing. Sonic is recorded routinely in exploration and geotechnical holes at coal mines. With the advent of slimline dipmeter, full waveform sonic, and optical and acoustic scanner tools, the role of borehole logging in geotechnical evaluations is expanding. Monitoring of strain and micro-seismic activity enhances safety during mine production. While qualitative interpretation of logs is adequate for stratigraphic identification or definition of boundaries, a wealth of quantitative information, eg density, can be derived from properly calibrated, repeatable geophysical logs. Moreover, geophysical logs can sometimes serve as surrogates for geochemical assays, and not only for magnetite and uranium. At OutokumpuÆs Kemi chromite mine, for example, gamma-gamma logging provides the basis for grade control. By reducing reliance on assaying, three benefits can be realised: reduced reliance on core drilling; lower core handling and assaying costs; and shorter turn-around times. Conventional downhole EM and borehole magnetics are used for near-mine exploration, and for ground sterilisation. Inco has enjoyed considerable success with borehole UTEM in the Sudbury Basin, for example, and Geopeko has applied three-component borehole magnetics successfully in the Tennant Creek area. Electrical techniques such as applied potential and magnetometric resistivity (MMR) are also finding application at mines. For higher resolution, borehole seismic, radio imaging, and radar have been invoked, with varying degrees of success, to delineate orebodies and map structures, or to geotechnically characterise the rock mass and identify hazards. Success mapping nickel sulphide shoots with borehole radar has been reported by WMC at Kambalda. There are no universal geophysical panaceas, and each mine imposes different geological, logistical, and economic constraints. Geophysics will not always be cost-effective. However, the greatest single impediment to expanded use of geophysics at mines has been the low level of awareness of geophysics on the part of most mine geologists, engineers, and managers and, equally, the limited understanding of mine geology and engineering exhibited by the majority of geophysicists. This myopia will be remembered as a 20th century affliction! Blue Sky areas for mine geophysics in the next ten years include integration of geophysical data acquisition with drilling, enhanced grade estimation and rock mass characterisation, and the incorporation of geophysical information into mine models using geostatistical techniques. All these advances will be predicated on an expansion of petrophysical knowledge.

The Middle and Lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt is one of the most important polymetallic resource areas in China. Iron oxide-apatite deposits, mainly distributed in Ningwu and Luzong volcanic basins, are a distinct type of iron deposits in this region. These deposits have a close temporal and spatial relationship with Mesozoic dioritic porphyries and are characterised by magnetite-apatite-pyroxene/actinolite ± anhydrite assemblage and large-scale sodic-calcic alteration.Widespread multiphase inclusions in pre- to main-mineralisation stage pyroxene and garnet in Meishan (in the Ningwu basin), Luohe and Nihe (both in the Luzong basin) iron deposits were trapped at ~780°C in extremely saline brines (~90 wt per cent NaCl equivalent), consisting of Na (13–24 wt per cent), K (7–11 wt per cent), Ca (~7 wt per cent), Fe (~2 wt per cent), Cl (19–47 wt per cent) and SO4 (3–39 wt per cent), based on petrologic, microthermometric, Raman spectroscopic studies and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of natural fluid inclusions and synthetic analogues. The high Cl/Br, Na/B and S/B ratios in brine inclusions and the heavy sulfur isotopic values of anhydrite and pyrite (d34SAnh = +15.2 to +16.9‰, d34SPy = +4.6 to +12.1‰) suggest a significant contribution from both halite- and anhydrite-bearing sedimentary rocks. The involvement of evaporites caused the production of large amounts of high-salinity brines with apparently enhanced capacity to extract iron from the dioritic intrusions.According to their geologic features and the above characteristics, these iron oxide-apatite deposits are considered to be a special type of iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits characterised by high contents of Na, Ca, Cl and SO4 in the ore-forming fluids. The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. At the last MassMin Conference in Sudbury, Caterpillar’s vision of a continuous mining concept for block caving operations was presented on the background of global raw material demand and its continuous increase. By analysing today’s structure of mining processes in block caving, the paper (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012) highlighted the main bottlenecks in the process chain and identified conceptual solutions by help of a case study. The main focus was the paradigm shift from discontinuous batch type operation to a continuous mining process of the blocks.In 2016, the strategic vision has taken major strides forwards and remote continuous operation has become a reality. Caterpillar’s continuous operation system – the Rock Flow system – was successfully installed in Codelco’s Andina mine and start of operation is scheduled in the first half of 2016.Based on continuous product developments, this paper sets the focus on two main aspects of continuous mining. First, field experiences of the Rock Flow system will be shared, highlighting the Andina project course from system installation, to commissioning and successful system start. The second aspect concentrates on the system and mine layout as discussed in the case study scenario in MassMin 2012 (Krings, Steinberg and Frenzel, 2012).Based on Caterpillar`s continuous product development, the Rock Flow system set-up and panel design were modified for a general roadway design and drawpoint layout. The new design allows an optimised use in block preparation phase (spreading) and full production phase (reaping), operating a fleet of load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and Rock Flow systems. The combined use of the two technologies optimises the mining process in every stage of block life and significantly increases the performance of the continuous block caving operation in the production panel to pave the road for the next generation of super caves.CITATION:Frenzel, M, 2016. As has been the case since the early Phoenician traders, the minerals used by modern man come from deposits scattered around the globe. The price received is more and more being set by worldwide supply and demand. Thus the price component in the profit equation:Profits = Material sold (units)x(Price/unit û Cost/unit) is largely determined by others. The recent price history for two of the major metals, copper and iron, are given in Figures 1 and 2, respectively. As can be seen there has been a steady decline in the prices (when expressed in constant dollars) over the 20 years which have lapsed since the first of the International Conferences on Mass Mining, æDesign and Operation of Caving and Sublevel Stoping MinesÆ was held. If one would look back over the entire 20th century this would also be the trend. Cost containment/reduction through efficient, safe and environmentally responsive mining practices is serious business today and will be even more important in the future with increasing mining depths and more stringent regulations. A failure to keep up is expressed very simply as: Profit This, needless to say, is unfavourable for all concerned (the employees, the company, and the country or nation). The mining companies have had to look at ways of reducing the expense part of the profit equation while maintaining safe, environmentally conscious operations. Table 1 summarises the rules for working in todayÆs economy.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

The problems associated with achieving adequate accuracy for on-site axial flow fan performance measurements are discussed. The ability to test accurately rests heavily on equipment and installation design detail.Aerodynamic performance trials frequently cannot be carried out due mainly to the poor standard of installation design. In a majority of cases this results in unsteady, non-uniform inlet flow conditions to the fan. Details of installation design features and instrumentation, necessary for successful testing, are given for different types of installations and methods of testing. These cover both conventional practice, and new innovations which can provide solutions to difficult problems. Quantitative aspects of flow measurement are considered for various fan and duct configurations.Although the main emphasis is on large primary mine ventilation units which require on-site testing, the principles outlined have wide application to many other types of fan installation.
