"On 9 February 2014, bushfire embers landing on exposed coal in a disused pit at the Hazelwood mine in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley ignited a coal fire that burned for 45 days. The fire was the largest and longest burning mine fire to occur in the Latrobe Valley (Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry, 2016). Two Victorian Government Boards of Inquiry have been held into the Hazelwood mine fire. The most recent, in 2015, included consideration of the regulation and implementation of rehabilitation practice at Hazelwood and the other two brown coalmines of the Latrobe Valley (Loy Yang and Yallourn; Government Gazette, 2015).The 2015 Hazelwood Mine Fire Board of Inquiry commissioned Accent Environmental Pty Ltd (Accent) to undertake a review of the financial mechanisms for mine rehabilitation and closure adopted in Australia and overseas (Accent, 2015). Specifically, Accent was engaged to identify ‘any practical, sustainable, efficient and effective alternative mechanisms to ensure rehabilitation of the mines as required by the [Victorian] Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990’ in accordance with Terms of Reference 10 (c) (Government Gazette, 2015).The review by Accent included consideration of a range of financial instruments such as bank guarantees, trust funds and insurance. It considered a number of financial assurance systems in operation in Australia, New Zealand, the European Union, Canada and the United States. These systems included: full and discount financial assurance systems predefined liability proportion systems pooled fund systems the use of post-closure financial mechanisms such as trust funds (Accent, 2015).What lessons can be learnt from other jurisdictions? A comparison was made between chemical analysis and ocular mineral/rock classification in health-based risk assessment of historical mine waste produced between 1625 and 1975. Large parts of the mine waste are heavily weathered and secondary minerals are abundant. The field was divided into several areas from where composite samples were collected. Seventy-five mine waste samples were selected for chemical analysis (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) and ocular mineral/rock classification (silicate, mica, granite/pegmatite, carbonate, iron oxide ore, sulfide ore, distribution between chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite). The waste has been produced in conjunction with mining a complex sulfidic ore with increasing iron oxide content (mainly magnetite) towards the northern part of the field. Elevated concentrations were found for Cd (average 26 mg/kg dw), Cu (average 3500 mg/kg dw), Pb (average 4100 mg/kg dw) and Zn (average 11 000 mg/kg dw). Large differences between average and median values indicated that the data was not normally distributed, ie the metals occur as discrete minerals (eg chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite). The ocular classification indicated low carbonate content, chalcopyrite dominating over sphalerite and galena in most samples and an even distribution between pyrite and pyrrhotite. Both analytical and ocular mineral/rock classification data were combined into a common matrix that was evaluated using multivariate statistics. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed, for instance, that chromium and vanadium were mostly associated with harder minerals and rocks. PCA also indicated that a similar graphical picture could be obtained for chemical data and ocular mineral/rock classification data, respectively. The comparison indicates that ocular mineral/rock classification can replace or at least reduce the numbers of chemical analysis in health- based risk assessment of historical mine waste.

In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.

Controls on environmental loading from acid rock drainage (ARD) are not well understood in waste rock material. In particular, relationships between subsurface flow and the timing, duration, and intensity of leaching of metals and acidity from waste rock dumps remain ill defined. This study investigates field-scale relationships between subsurface flow processes and geochemical processes in unsaturated waste rock. A 12-metre tall, unsaturated waste rock pile, constructed in 1994, was deconstructed and sampled at Key Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada, during the summer of 2000. A detailed sampling methodology was developed to characterise physical and chemical properties of waste rock material within the waste rock pile. Physical properties were characterised by measuring soil-water suction, volumetric water content, and grain-size distribution at 60 random locations within the pile and grain-size distribution at 20 grid locations within the pile. Attempts to develop a field-based soil water characteristic curve from physical field-data failed due to spatial variability and hysteresis of waste rock properties. As a result, grain-size distribution was used as a relative measure of subsurface flow. Paste pH, pore-water geochemistry, mineralogy, and water-soluble extraction results were used to characterise geochemical processes and sulfide oxidation at each of the 20 grid locations. Geochemical characterisation results demonstrated the preferential weathering of marcasite relative to pyrite and chalcopyrite. Dolomite was the main buffering carbonate mineral. Gyspum, jarosite and iron oxyhydroxides were the main secondary minerals. Pore-waters contained up to 800, 11.7, and 6 mMolar (78 000, 690, 1400 mg/L, respectively) of sulfate, nickel, and uranium, respectively, suggesting significant weathering has occurred. Measures of weathering indicators show no discernable correlation with grain-size distribution nor do they show any spatial relationship within the sampled grid. Reasons for this may include limited duration of waste rock exposure to weathering and development of fluid flow-paths, and limitations of characterisation methods used. Indeed, six years may not be long enough for weathering patterns to develop due to fluid flow-paths in this unsaturated waste rock pile.

The Cadia mine has shifted from an open pit operation to the Cadia East underground panel cave. The resulting increase in milled tonnes, more competent ore and the decrease in fines production through shifting to panel caving were predicted to require an increase of over 25 per cent in installed power. This expansion was accomplished via the installation of secondary and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing of the ore, with the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill receiving a combination of primary, secondary and HPGR crushed feed. This design, criteria and rationale for selection was presented at the SAG Conference 2011. Surface mining activities disturb large areas, produce great sediment loads and tend to be a source of water pollution if they are not managed properly. Coal mining in Indonesia has a very high risk of soil erosion because the coal mining areas are generally located in tropical areas with a high average of rainfall (4000 - 6000 mm/year) and use surface mining methods. The main factors affecting erosion risk are climate, soil type, topography, vegetation cover and management factors. Thus, the monitoring of erosion risk in mining areas is very important due to the characteristics of coal mining in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to determine the ability of satellite images (remote sensing data) and geographic information systems (GIS) to provide an accurate and up to date spatial database for the monitoring of erosion risk in surface coal mining areas using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) method.The erosion risk analysis and spatial data processing are generated by the ArcGIS 9.3 software and need several data, namely: an erosivity map, erodibility map, a slope map, vegetation index map and land management or land cover map. The erosivity map is derived from the rainfall data, whereas the erodibility map is derived from the soil map. The slope map is derived from the SRTM-DEM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission-Digital Elevation Model) and processed using 3D analyst tools. Furthermore, the vegetation index map and land cover map are derived from a satellite image using digital image processing techniques.This preliminary study produced results that show soil erosion monitoring, which is integrated with remote sensing and GIS technologies, has great potential for producing accurate, advance, and low cost erosion risk maps in coal mining areas. This map is very important for getting spatial distributions of the erosion and useful for developing erosion management plans.

Didipio gold-copper mine operation is situated in the island of Luzon, approximately 270 km north of Manila in the Philippines, in an area of high seasonal rainfall. The hydrogeological water flow model implied that there would be high connectivity between regional structures and underground operations. This model predicted that underground mine groundwater inflows were expected to quickly rise as the decline progressed to a peak of 510 L/s. Designing a capital pump station to deal with 510 L/s has its own challenges, however developing the decline down to the required level, always dealing with 300 L/s of water and constructing the pump station is extremely challenging and required a robust water management plan and mine design. When dealing with expected high volumes of water, underground mine design and scheduling plays a key role in protecting electrical infrastructure, equipment, secondary pumps, and the decline from flooding. A good drainage system and controlled dewatering plan is essential for safety and progress. This paper details the dewatering techniques and mine designs required to accomplish decline development with high water inflows as used in the Didipio project. It will describe the learnings and outcomes that are achievable with a flexible design, as new structures are mapped, and water intersections are increased. It also highlights the potential for adaptability in mine planning to provide evolving improvements or to evade problems that are expected from the constant reconciliation of data recorded during development.

Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. The Razorback Iron Ore Project is a high tonnage, low-grade magnetite deposit that defines a new iron ore district in South Australia. Known since the 1960s, the deposit has come into its own as the iron hungry world demands not only larger tonnages, but higher grade and cleaner magnetite concentrate ores that counterbalance the increasingly dirty haematite ores that are coming into production.Razorback is hosted by the Neoproterozoic Braemar Iron Formation, a tillitic unit that is part of the Adelaidean Geosyncline sedimentary sequence. At Razorback, this formation forms the southern limb of the Pualco Syncline, dipping at 42° to the north and outcropping along a prominent ridge. The formation consists of a series of alternating bedded tillitic and interbedded magnetite units that represent cycles of glacial advances and retreats. Seven cycles, resulting in seven stratigraphic members, are recognised. Members B, D, and G are the thickest, at 30 - 70 m each, and are the target of current investigations. While the bedded magnetite has the highest iron content, typically 35 per cent Fe, the tillitic unit, at typically 26 per cent Fe, has similar iron content in the ground mass but is diluted by the inclusion of iron-poor granite and metasedimentary dropstones. The mineralisation forms a simple dipping tabular body with only minor faulting, folding and intrusives. Grades, thickness, dip, and outcropping geometry remain very consistent over kilometres of strike, presenting an excellent mining proposition.Razorback differentiates itself from other Australian magnetite projects in a number of important ways. It is not a banded iron formation (BIF); it will have low crushing and grinding costs; and it is located in an infrastructure-rich area close to open-access, high capacity rail, to a selection of ports and to gas, electricity, labour and engineering services. Royal Resources has announced an Inferred resource of 277 Mt @ 25.9 per cent Fe. The company is targeting a resource of 500 - 1000 Mt to support a 10 Mt per year concentrate production. Davis Tube Recovery work shows that the ore is capable of producing a concentrate of over 68 per cent Fe with very low deleterious elements. Metallurgical testing confi rms the ore is soft, and with near-zero initial stripping ratio the project will have a low opex. With access to existing critical infrastructure, capex will also be low, ensuring Razorback will be a highly competitive iron producer in this emergent mining district.

Sticking and breakage of iron ore pellets during high temperature reduction can result in several operational challenges during shaft furnace ironmaking. With the shift to H2-based DRI processes and decreasing iron ore quality, this issue becomes more prominent. It is therefore important to understand how the iron ore chemistry and mineralogy affects the sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. This study provides a review of the mechanisms that lead to sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. The sticking index of pellets is related to the rate of metallic iron production as well as the precipitation morphology of product iron. Sticking of pellets is also enhanced by the formation of low-melting slag phases. The breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace is often associated with the mechanical load of burden and pellet swelling, which is caused due to iron whisker or protruded iron formation. This paper investigates how the composition of iron ore, particularly the presence of different impurity oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and alkali oxides in the pellets, influences the sticking and swelling indices. The effect of ore mineralogy on these adverse behaviours is also discussed.

Technical disputes, commercial negotiations and workplace/societal conflict are a natural part of doing business and just living itself. Conflict is everywhere û at home (between family and neighbours); in the workplace (between management, co-workers and unions), with contractors and with other companies; and everywhere at the community level, dealing with land access (pastoralists/farmers and indigenous/First Nation people), environmental protestors and NIMBY-ites - Civil Society in general. Exploration and mining companies, operating in more remote, less developed and culturally diverse regions, tend to encounter myriad areas of conflict (typically emotion-charged) and they are outlined. Dispute prevention, management and various binding and non-binding resolution techniques are discussed. The paper gives a general overview of the ADR nomenclature and framework (mediation, conciliation, expert determination, adjudication, arbitration and litigation) encouraging technical professionals to participate. Its thesis is that lawyers should not necessarily be the first port of call when problems arise between the mining workforce, contractors, joint venture partners, purchasers of prospects/mines, traditional land owners, protest groups, etc. If the matter must be litigated, the role of the expert witness is critical in pretrial planning, negotiations, mediation and litigation management, so a few guidelines are provided. Whilst dispute resolution has a legal context, the paper is written from an AusIMM technical professionalÆs perspective, emphasising practical long-lasting pragmatic solutions.

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

The underground metalliferous mining industry continues to change under the influence of many factors including, to name a few, new mining techniques and equipment, new approaches to risk management, more stringent safety and health standards, new employment practices and orebodies become deeper and often lower grade. In addition, the same technological revolution and plummeting cost of technology that has brought the GPS, smart phones and digital cameras to the general population is also working its way through the mining industry impacting on communications, automation and process control as well as introducing major efficiency and productivity dividends. However, not all factors are positive including, in particular, the issues of carbon costs and electrical power. This paper explores some of the trends affecting ventilation in hard rock mines, some of the existing and likely future challenges and some of the potential future solutions to these issues.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2013. Good morning ladies and gentlemen, and may I thank you for inviting me once again to address your conference. I would first like to welcome you all, especially international delegates and conference speakers. ItÆs a pleasure to be with you all and I hope that you have the time to enjoy the many beautiful sights that the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty have to offer.   Holding your conference in Waihi is particularly apt, especially bearing in mind the conference theme û 'Mining in the Community'. There can be few venues in the world that can boast a world class gold deposit of the likes of Martha Hill located right here in the centre of a rural service town. ItÆs a deposit that has a mining history active now in its third century and that to date has yielded some 7.5 million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver. I doubt that when John McCombie and Robert Lee discovered gold at Martha Hill in 1878 that they had any inkling that their endeavours would be the foundation for a mine that would become such an inseparable part of the economic and social fabric of Waihi for the next 130 years.   This is now my fifth appearance at a New Zealand minerals conference, I especially value such occasions as it allows me to comment on your industryÆs performance over the past year, share my thoughts on matters affecting your industry, and also to give you some feedback from central government.

The demand for gallium has increased significantly over the last few decades due to the expanding use of Ga compounds in the electronics industry. Because it is widely dispersed and rarely found naturally in concentrations greater than 0.1%, Ga is expensive (approximately US$500/kg) and difficult to produce in large quantities.   A previous study of metals in geothermal systems reported significant quantities of Ga present in the muds on the northeast margin of Lake Rotokawa, an acidic lake associated with a high-temperature geothermal field situated in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Similar muds are present in many other geothermal fields in the zone, suggesting that geothermal muds could be a commercial source ofGa.

Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. Successful closure of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is an environmental issue faced globally by metalliferous mines. During the initial feasibility and design phase of the mine life importance is placed on the physical stability of above ground TSFs, largely driven by legislative requirements, whilst closure planning is often a secondary consideration. However, as the landform is further developed and constructed attention must be paid to regularly revisit the original closure plan and update it to achieve the best (sustainable) possible outcome for both the environment and stakeholders. A mine in northern Queensland is in the process of developing a closure strategy at their TSF. Appropriate closure measures for the TSF are required to mitigate the impact of any seepage emanating from the TSF on the groundwater and surface water receptors. O’Kane Consultants Pty Ltd (OKC) have provided the mine assistance with the development of a TSF cover system design in order to appropriately manage tailings during operations and to prepare for the facilities’ closure. OKC has collected data since 2007 from cover system field trials located on the TSF. To enhance engineering judgement in the design of future cover systems, calibration of soil-plant-atmosphere numerical models to field data (referred as ‘field response modelling’) were completed. Calibrated model inputs can be used to provide insight into long-term cover system performance as well as a tool for design of the final landform.Following a site investigation, materials characterisation and numerical modelling program various cover system alternatives were developed. Two of the preferred cover system alternatives referred to as Test Plot #1 (TP#1) and Test Plot #2 (TP#2) (Figure 1), were constructed at the site and instrumented. Monitoring instrumentation comprised several nests of in situ volumetric water content and thermal conductivity sensors to measure changes in water content, temperature and matric suction within the cover system materials and underlying tailings waste.
