At Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system, TVZ, mineral distribution patterns in geothermal wells are analogous to those in epithermal veins. Fluid flow through geothermal wells is focused over vertical intervals >500 m with discharge at rates up to 90 l/s. Focused flow at similar rates also occurs in natural systems where hydrothermal eruption vents provide enhanced vertical permeability. These vents are commonly aligned with the tectonic fabric, indicating fault control at depth. We suggest that host rock strength and structural context exert significant control on the hydrological regime conducive to epithermal mineralisation.

LKAB operates two underground mines in Kiruna and Malmberget, Sweden. Blast furnace pellet is the main product and makes up 70 per cent of total production. The orebodies are hosted by 1910 - 1860 Ma old volcanic rocks. The host rocks and the ores were affected by the Svecokarelian orogeny for 1890 - 1860 Ma ago. The deposit belongs to the Kiruna type apatite-rich iron ore. Magnetite is the main ore mineral but haematite is the dominant ore mineral in some orebodies in the western part of the deposit. Large-scale sublevel caving is the dominant mining method. Three main haulage levels are in operation at present. The ore boundaries and quality can be detected by geophysical logging resulting in reduced waste dilution and subsequent grade reduction. The susceptibility measurements have been used in the magnetite ore since 1991 and gamma-gamma measurements in the haematite ore since 1998. The mining scale has increased during the last 20 years but diamond drilling has remained at approximately 18 000 drilling metres per year. Uncertainties in the ore constructions can lead to unexpected cost increases, ore loss and dilution. The ore boundaries are evaluated with percussion drill holes using in-hole geophysics to achieve satisfactory geological knowledge. The probes are calibrated in all currently mined orebodies. The correlation between core sample assays and measured susceptibility and gamma-gamma values is strong. The cost to determine the ore boundary by percussion drilling with in-hole geophysics is two-thirds lower, and productivity is six times higher compared to diamond drilling. The measurements are made by geotechnicians and the interpretations by a geologist. The results are transferred to a database and presented three dimensionally as holes with iron grade intervals on mine maps. The interpreted holes are used by the geologist in various ways in the geological modelling. Layout planning uses the measurements as a tool to place the drifts at the correct distance from the ore contact especially in the longitudinal sublevel caving and the production hole planning to optimise the final length of the cross-cuts and drifts for best ore recovery.

Online cyanide analysers have been successfully used to control free cyanide in the gold/silver leach process for over 15 years. Use of such analysers leads to cyanide savings and improvement in recoveries. Plants with leach cyanide analysers show both lower and more consistent cyanide levels in tailings. Cyanide code compliance requires meeting residual cyanide targets in tailings. Monitoring and logging of the residual cyanide in plant tailings and effluent is required. Meeting targets may require cyanide recovery/destruction processes to be implemented. The operating cost of destroying cyanide is often the same order of magnitude as the cyanidation cost. Various cyanide destruction and/or recovery processes are reviewed. Choice of a process consistent with the environmental and operational requirements is illustrated. Online weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) analysers have recently been developed and introduced on gold plants. The application of a WAD 1000 online CNWAD analyser at a large gold plant is presented. The analyser ensures code compliance, reduces cyanide destruction process operating costs and forms a historical record of CNWAD values in tailings.

ThePike River coal field is located between 700 and 1000 m above sea level on the West Coast of the South Island. The area contains a resource of some 60 million tonnes of coal in a single coal seam and is part of the Paparoa mountain range that receives between 6.0 and 6.5 m of rainfall per annum. The area has been isolated and has received no on the coal plateau but has been extensively logged in the lower 3.5 km of Pike Stream. The PRCC development proposal recognises this and calls for an environmentally benign development that includes underground development of this resource. The coalfield abuts and is partly overlain by the Paparoa National Park. The underground development will enable a number of environmental goals to be readily achieved: it will be out of sight of the public,it will not impact the national park,noise will be mostly absent,there will be absolute minimal disturbance to the land surface,coal will be transported from the mine to a dewatering complex on PRCC land in a slurry pipeline thus obviating the need for trucks and noise in Pike Stream valley,all water draining from the mine will be collected, treated if required to consent standards and discharged from a single point,the road into the area will allow for an effective predator control programme to be undertaken enhancing native bird life,an environment suitable for the reintroduction of Whio (Blue Duck) will be created, andthe net effect of the mine development on the environment will be positive.

As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. A number of examples illustrate the use of the new advances and a final example indicates the development of risk analysis curves in the coupling of sampling precision to sale of a commodity.CITATION:Lyman, G J and Bourgeois, F S, 2015. Ore from the Browns deposit near Batchelor, in the Northern Territory of Australia, is a fine-grained polymetallic sulfide ore hosted in graphitic black shale. Minerals of economic significance are seigenite (Co,Ni)4S3, Galena (PbS) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with minor Sphalerite (ZnS). Gangue minerals include quartz, carbon and K-feldspar. The grain size is fine, with a significant amount of the seigenite present as Early flotation work determined that a grind size of around 20 microns was required to achieve clean sulfide concentrates. This work recommended oil agglomeration flotation, in which small sulfide minerals were collected, then loosely agglomerated with oil ahead of flotation into a heavily mineralised froth. In the 400 kg/hr prototype plant this froth proved unmanageable. A conventional flotation circuit after grinding to a P80 of 24 microns and using very low flotation pulp densities resulted in an 86 per cent cobalt recovery.The paper analyses further laboratory work which has increased cobalt recovery to 91 per cent by grinding to û250 microns ahead of flash flotation. The real cobalt recovery breakthrough comes from flash flotation of the whole mill discharge rather than the more usual flash flotation of cyclone underflow. Flash flotation tailings are ground to û38 microns and are floated under normal flotation conditions with only the scavenger concentrates being reground to 20 microns.A one tonne per hour prototyping campaign is scheduled to demonstrate the robustness of this circuit.

The AusIMM is concerned about the longer tem sustainability of the minerals sector in Australasia. Our contention is that the sustainability of the sector is at risk if we do not:   ò encourage more exploration in Australasia by removing impediments and         increasing incentives; ò fund our university and research centres appropriately to increase both our   prospectivity, and our processing efficiencies; and ò manage our human resources better.   This paper will focus on how we can better manage our human resources to assist in ensuring sustainability of the sector in Australasia .   From a production point of view:   Economic output = f (Land, Labour, Capital, Environment) where Land refers to all of the natural resources used in production. As well as land itself it includes water, forest, fisheries, oil, gas and mineral deposits. Labour refers to the skills and capabilities used by humans in the production process. Capital describes all of the manufactured aids used in the process of production1. The challenge for management is to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of labour in the production process whilst maintaining sustainable development.   The 1992 Rio Summit defined sustainable development as maintaining and enhancing:   ò natural capital û defined as all natural resources, both environmental and   those of traditional economic value; ò manufactured capital û made by human kind, including produced goods,     infrastructure and built environment; ò human capital û defined as the health, well being, intellectual capabilities and   spiritual welfare of individuals; and ò social capital û defined as social relations and consultations within and   between societies, their norms and functionality2.   The minerals sector in Australasia has successfully focused on the technical aspects of each of these components of sustainable development with primary attention applied to natural capital and efficient utilisation of manufactured capital. The technical aspects of human capital and social have also been addressed through an emphasis on occupational health and safety and interaction with local communities however I suggest that, to date, insufficient emphasis has been placed on labour (human capital) to maximise economic output1.   It has become increasingly common practice to identify land as natural capital, labour as human capital and capital as physical capital. That is labour has been treated as a commodity rather than an opportunity to create a comparative advantage and this will be the greatest challenge for mine management to show leadership over the next decade of the 21st Century.   This paper will outline characteristics of the sector which are relevant to the management and utilisation of labour, outline the outcomes of recent AusIMM surveys, review the reasons for the current and future anticipated skills shortages, some innovative responses to the challenges and finally, suggestions on how mine management can show leadership.

Three computerised sets of minerals information are being developed by New Zealand Geological Survey in co-operation with the Resource Management and Mining group of the Ministry of Energy: 1. Geological Resource Map: a file of information on the location, geology, geochemistry, production, and potential use of individual occurrences of aggregate, mineral, geothermal, coal, oil, and gas resources. The computer program can be used for search and retrieval of information and the production of maps and tables. The data is being published as a series of 1:250 000 maps with accompanying text and tables. 2. Minerals Bibliography: an index and retrieval system for mineral exploration related; open-file company reports, N.Z. Geological Survey files, scientific research publications and university theses. 3. Minerals WhoÆs Who: an annotated directory of geologists involved in mineral exploration, mining and research.

This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. As the theme of the conference is ære-discover Otago' from the minerals point of view, it is also timely. Of the eight million ounces of gold recorded produced from Otago, perhaps a quarter of this came from the goldfields of St Bathans, Vinegar Hill and Cambrians. The most notable among them was the Kildare Hill Mine, which is the so-called Blue Lake at St Bathans today. The bottom wash encountered in this mine contained the famous Kildare lead, which averaged 7 1/2 dwt to the dish, and is still one of the richest leads of alluvial gold known in the world. The richness of this lead, the best encountered in these gold fields, is otherwise stated to have yielded more than 42 ounces of gold to the cubic yard. It should be borne in mind that this equates to about $22 000 per cubic metre, in todayÆs values. I have been told by older residents of this district that in fact about 1 million ounces came out of the Kildare mine and associated workings. In todayÆs values, this would be about 530 million dollars worth of gold. The largest mines in the district were at Surface Hill, Kildare Hill, Nicholsons, Vinegar Hill, the Never Fail claim at Shepherds Flat nearby, and at Cambrians. It would appear that in almost every case, work stopped when the bottom wash progressed too deep down dip of the anticline hills on which it was initially found. The mining methods were sluicing and hydraulic elevating, and although the gold bearing ground did not stop, eventually it exceeded the ability of the mining methods then available years ago, to work it further. When it is realised that the previous mining has removed what is likely to be only a low percentage of the gold resources in these fields, a tantalising situation presents itself today in that mining technology now available will enable another cut to be taken off these fields. As in the past, I believe this will be million ounce plus and multi-million dollar scenarios, where the economic and social benefits will become widespread prizes.

The Julius Kruttschnitt semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill model was developed by Leung in the 1980s and extensively updated to the variable rates model by Morrell and Morrison in 1996. Since then only minor upgrades have been incorporated in the version distributed in the JKSimMet simulator. A number of improvements, developed over the course of the AMIRA P9 project and in recent independent work, have now been incorporated. These improvements are based on a power-based model that directly relates the degree of breakage with energy consumption. The new size-dependent breakage function has been incorporated. The upgrades include more accurate predictions for a wide range of mill fillings (ten - 40 per cent), slurry hold-up in the mill, pebble discharge rate and the influence of changes in feed size and ball load.The paper presents the status of progress in the model development. In the early-1990s, Tad Golosinski, the former the head of mining department at WASM participated in a review mining engineering courses in Australia. The review team asked various industry executives what subjects they thought graduates needed to be taught. Tad made the comment to me that the more senior executives thought that history and ethics were very important. The outcome was that the mining engineering courses were required to contain at least five per cent content dealing in ethics. The course was to be modified to reflect this. Tad thought at the time the students would think that subjects dealing in history and ethics came from retirees and professionals that were over the hill. So let me talk to you today about ethics.

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

Mining is a water intensive sector, contributing to declining water resource quality around the world. Improvements to current mine water management practices can help reduce the amount of water utilised by the mining sector and the impact on water resources. Creating a water account can help companies understand water use in their operations and identify areas where water reduction is possible. Water accounting methods include the Water Footprint Network method and the WaterMiner tool.The Water Footprint Network method is used to determine the amount of direct and indirect water used by an organisation either in a process or to manufacture a product. The total water footprint is divided into the blue, green and grey water footprints. Blue water is the amount of water abstracted from surface and ground water resources. Green water is the amount of rain water utilised. Grey water is the amount of freshwater required to assimilate the waste stream to the natural resource and still conform to ambient water quality standards.The WaterMiner tool is a program available via the internet, which can be used to model water use of mineral processing sites. The program reports the amount of raw, worked and treated water used by the process and recommends flows that can be added to reduce the amount of fresh water required by the process.To gain information on mine water management practices in South Africa, a water account for a platinum mine was developed using the Water Footprint Network method and WaterMiner tool.
