Barrick Gold Corporation is proceeding with development of the Buzwagi Mine in the Lake Victoria Greenstone Belt District of Tanzania. The Buzwagi orebody occurs in the Nzega Shear zone within the Greenstone Belt and is hosted in a K-Feldspar rich granite in contact with mafic volcanic. The orebody presents 2.6 M ounces in 41 Mt of reserves, at 2.0 g/t. Over the ten year mine life, total material movement will be 261 Mt. The feasibility study was completed in 2006 and presented several technical challenges. Two principle challenges are grade control and the impact of dilution on the economic viability of the project. The principle challenges for grade control will be quality control and quality assurance in the sampling of the massive coarse grained granite, which comprises 70 per cent of the deposit. The principle challenge with dilution will be with the selective mining of the narrower mineralised zones contained within the mafic volcanics. This paper will focus on the mine planning methodology which has been applied including selective mine unit (SMU) and dilution estimation, net smelter revenue (NSR) calculation and the effects of cut-off grades to the project economics and mine schedule.

Study on Basic Theory of the Grain Settlement in Fluidised Bed This paper takes thick goal grains (less than 1.5 cm) as research object. According to different densities and particle sizes, thick goal grains are divided into 20 kinds of narrow density and narrow size level average grains. Free settling and hindered settling tests are respectively carried out in ?100 fluidised bed thick goal separators. Hindered settlement includes hindered settling velocity test and measurements of suspension density. Results show follows. (1) Fluid state in separator belongs to transition region. Alien's law is the appropriate formula of thick coal particles free settlement terminal velocity. (2) The main factors affecting hindered settling velocity are the number of solid particles in medium and the structure feature of the particle group. The bigger volume fractions of solids ? is, the smaller decreasing velocity coefficient of particle hindered settlement ¯ becomes. In the organism from bottom to top, density of suspended particles in fluidised bed gradually decreases, but near the top of the suspended particles, the density increased slightly. With increase of density and size, suspension density reducing extent increases from bottom to top of separators.

Technical Challenges in the Flotation of Molybdenite from Porphyry Copper Ores

Core samples, which were collected by the author from the Busang prospect, East Kalimantan, reflect a progressive evolution of a large magmatic-related hydrothermal system that is comparable to that encountered in many similar systems elsewhere in the Pacific region. The initial, localized deposition of sheeted porphyry quartz-molybdenite veins took place at high temperatures and fluid salinities, and at relatively deep levels. This was followed by an extensive phase of phyllic (sericite-quartz-pyrite ¦ tourmaline-apatite) wallrock replacement and vein formation. Propylitic (epidote-chlorite-carbonate-quartz) alteration was formed marginal to the phyllic assemblages. These porphyry-related events were centred in the Southeast Zone, and are probably associated with the emplacement of a felsic intrusion at depth. This event contributed only trace gold to the system. The early stages of hydrothermal activity were followed by an episode of quartz (¦ adularia) û carbonate û base metal sulfide veining, which was accompanied by argillic (illitic-kaolin clay) wallrock alteration. This event was sulfide-rich in the Central Zone and carbonate-dominated in the Southeast Zone. Gold mineralisation was observed in Central Zone drillcore to be associated with both sulfide, as well as carbonate, deposition. A final stage of epithermal-style quartz ¦ stibnite û realgar veins are, in the Central Zone, locally gold-bearing. The latter two events are interpreted to be associated with the late-stage exsolution of metal-bearing brines from the felsic intrusion that formed the earlier porphyry quartz-molybdenite veins and widespread phyllic-propylitic alteration.

The mercury, gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc values of soils over altered and mineralised rock were determined to establish the potential use of mercury as an indicator element in geochemical prospecting. The results are presented to show that mercury can be used successfully in prospecting for precious metal mineralization in the Thames-Waihi area.

Caval Ridge Mine (CVM) is one of the newly established open-cut coal mines of BHP in Queensland, where no tailings dam is planned to be built in order to minimise environmental impacts from mining activities. The waste streams from the Coal Handling and Processing Plant, including fine tailings dewatered by belt filter presses, coarse rejects, and mixed plant rejects, are co-disposed within waste dumps built with pre-strip and dragline spoils. Due to high rejects output (35 – 60% of feed) and low spoil to reject ratio (< 5) the large quantities of rejects bring significant geotechnical and operational challenges to CVM, which are exacerbated by increasing annual production rates and additional rejects from washing coal from an adjacent mine. Further in-house geotechnical review commenced in mid-2014 based on the initial geotechnical studies during the project stage of CVM between 2011 and 2013. The outcomes have enabled rejects disposal at CVM by constructing large belt filtered tailings cells, coarse rejects only dumps, and co-disposal of the mixed plant rejects at dump tip-heads. This paper presents the rejects disposal strategies at CVM from both technical and operational aspects. It also discusses future projects for belt filtered tailings moisture reduction including assessment of tailings clay mineralogy, as well as mixed plant reject co-disposal verification and optimisation.CITATION:Li, J, Payne, D and Hooi, H, 2018. Geomembranes selected for various applications often start with considering target properties developed by industry organisations such as Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI), and test methods developed by ASTM and other Standards organisations The geomembrane types are typically, initially selected based on manufacturers recommendations and chemical resistance data from the manufacturer or industry knowledge. Geomembranes considered for this project included materials with material properties that exceeded the minimum target values of various test methods. The difficulty is in selecting which parameters are most important for a particular application and also what service life can be expected for the geomembrane under various chemical and environmental exposure conditions. Accelerated aging testing of candidate geomembranes in simulated exposure conditions can be useful to select the preferred geomembrane and predict the service life of the geomembrane under different exposure conditions. The exposure conditions of immersion in acidic tailings liquor, splash zone and freeboard zone were considered for evaporation ponds on a site with significant heat and UV radiation. Candidate geomembranes considered a range of different types of polyethylene liners. The results of the accelerated aging testing have allowed the selection of the geomembrane for the range of exposure conditions and evaluation of the expected service life of the geomembrane.

Fragmentation is one of the most relevant parameters in the design and operation of a mine using the caving mining method. Fragmentation affects all subsequent operations, including extraction, comminution processes, secondary blasting and transportation.There are a number of different models in the literature to estimate the size of the ore fragments that report to the drawpoints; however, there is still no industry consensus about which one to use. This paper proposes a new model for predicting the fragmentation reporting to the drawpoints that is based on the geotechnical unit characteristics, extraction height and column of primary ore. The model is developed from observations of fragmentation measurements in different mine sectors of Codelco’s El Teniente mine in Chile.This work focuses on the following three steps:collecting fragmentation and hang-up data from several mine sectorsdeveloping a geotechnical block model using oriented core placed within the main geotechnical unitsanalysing the data and modelling the fragmentation process.The proposed model is used to discuss the mechanisms and the influence of preconditioning on the size of the ore fragments that report to the drawpoints.CITATION:Brzovic, A, Vallejos, J, Arancibia, E, Burgos, L, Delonca, A, Gaete, M and Barrera, V, 2016. It is now becoming mandatory in Australia to rehabilitate ponded fine grained coal mine tailings, which may well have been deposited initially with no consideration as to how or whether this could be done nor to the costsinvolved. Of prime importance to the rehabilitation of tailings ponds are the bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the tailings. Since the tailings are fine grained, time effects will govern the self-weightdeformation of the tailings initially deposited as a slurry and the subsequent deformation of the deposit under the weight imposed by rehabilitation fill. The engineering properties of a particular deposit of ponded tailings havebeen investigated and its response to the placement of fill monitored and analysed.

Tonnage and grade are the principal reported components of mineral resource estimates but tonnage is a derivative of two more fundamental estimates; volume and bulk density. Typically, most of the effort in a resource estimation study is directed towards grade and volume, yet poor application of bulk density data to resource models can result in significant biases. The impact on tonnage estimates is easily recognised but poor density estimates may also introduce subtle biases into the grade estimates. Methods for measuring bulk density have been discussed previously. This paper focuses on the manipulation of bulk density data and the extension of bulk density from essentially point measurements to block estimates within resource models. Bulk density is a continuous, geologically controlled, spatial variable and should be treated as such. Issues such as combining data from multiple sources, sample support and the interdependence of bulk density and grade estimates must be resolved. The statistical and geostatistical techniques used for grade estimation are, under the right circumstances, equally applicable to bulk density. The importance of bulk density needs to be recognised. With robust raw data and correct estimation procedures, better estimates of bulk density can be obtained and both local and global tonnage and grade estimates can be improved.

The objective of this paper is to examine some modern forms of auxiliary ventilation fabric ducting with streamline design fittings and the efficiency of construction practices. The most dynamic form of auxiliary ventilation is a moveable fan and ducting, which is easy to install and uses light weight fabric. The porous nature of some ducting construction results in leakage and loss of efficiency. Flexible fabric ducting is primarily associated with metalliferous mining and industrial material quarrying. Some applications are found in coal in stone/rock development and with use of dust scrubbers.Forcing auxiliary ventilation systems employing circular fabric ducting have been examined. Leakage of air from ducting is affected by ducting material and construction methodology (such as welded or sewn), quality of installation, number of joints, total length, pressure differences between the inside and outside and diameter. The best ducting system with welded construction can have up to four times less leakage as compared with some systems with sewn construction. It is also evident that the sewn type ducting will deliver less air to working faces and require more fan power, hence higher operating costs to run when connected to the same fan.A case study has also been undertaken to compare predicted operating costs of auxiliary ventilation systems connecting various types of ventilation duct fittings. The study also assesses the technical importance of streamline design with low aerodynamic resistance to reduce the shock losses of the duct fittings. It was found that the system connected with streamline designed fittings is able to provide some power cost savings and deliver more air compared with the system fitted with conventional fitting pieces.Using a ventilation ducting system with a lower leakage and frictional characteristic represents a sound solution to new challenges faced by the industry for increasing demand for better quantities and quality of air delivered to working faces; this is due to higher production schedules and stricter mine health and safety regulations within the Australian mining industry.CITATION:Wu, H W and Gillies, A D S, 2017. This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

The dissolution of the naturally occurring mineral zircon (ZrSiO4) is examined after ball milling it with magnesium oxide for up to 100 hours in a laboratory mill. There was little effect on the solubility for the initial two hours where size reduction of the zircon was considered to be the dominant effect. Beyond two hours the dissolution increased as a function of the square root of milling time. X-ray diffraction of the powders did not reveal the identity of the soluble phase. However, a nanocrystalline phase was present after milling and this is thought to be the soluble phase.
