GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that had its origin in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the somewhat unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks being returned to earth will, we hope, provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust of the earth is not completely stable, and throughout the geologic past portions of the crust have moved laterally and vertically. Even today, many coastal areas are slowly rising or sinking. More sudden earth movements are recognized by the earthquakes they cause. Throughout geologic history, rises in sea level or the sinking of the land areas have many times permitted the oceans to cover much of what are now the areas of the continents. Formerly great divergence of opinion existed in regard to the influence of copper in steel, as affecting its various physical properties. More recently the investigations of Stead,l Breuil,2 Wigham,3 Burgess and Aston: Ball and Wingham,5 Miiller; Dillner,7 and others have shown fairly good agreement in the major points. Copper steel has been shown by these investigators to possess special properties which make it valuable for certain uses. The general range of composition of the useful alloys of copper and iron, and of copper, iron, and carbon, has been quite definitely established, for the former by Burgess and Aston,8 and for the latter by Breuil9 and Stead.10 Stead11 has removed one difficulty in reconciling certain of the earlier data by calling particular attention to the influence 'of carbon in copper steels. Another point which caused confusion in the earlier investigations, particularly in regard to " red-shortness," was the presence of sulphur. Failure to note the presence of sulphur often led to attributing " red-shortness" to the presence of small amounts of copper. Turner12 has called attention to the fact that where copper exists in an iron ore it often occurs as the sulphide, so that the presence of copper in steel made from such ores might also, necessarily, mean the presence of sulphur. It is evident that the effect in this case might be quite different than where pure copper was added.

It is a time-honored custom in this, as in other kindred bodies, for the retiring President on giving place to his successor, after a year of official duties which have been the means of directing his attention in a more than usual degree to the work and interests of the Association, to report the results of his observations from this outlook, and the thoughts that may be suggested by the view. In looking out over the many fields of activity within the range of this Institute, the attention may be arrested by special features marking recent progress and development, or such as by their meager outline or lack of important detail stand in less pleasing contrast, or. even form unsightly objects in the view. It may be that the special field and particular work in which one is engaged will, when observed from the more distant standpoint, or in the light of the whole outlook of the profession, assume a different aspect or develop features of new interest and importance. In this way some special object may suggest to the observer a, fitting theme for the occasion. To others, again, an outline of the whole view may seem a more useful subject for study and review. All fields are examined and the wide horizon of the whole profession scanned to note and report whatever is new in knowledge and practice—the new permanent bench-marks that appear near the horizon designating ground definitely located; the stakes which mark reconnoissance into new territory, and even the prominent objects that faintly appear through the mist of the distant atmosphere, and which may serve later on as points of attachment for the advancing lines of survey into the unknown. The early history and progress of anthracite stripping, from the first known operation at Summit Hill in 1821 through 1917, was covered in 1917 in a paper by J. B. Warriner,1 then chief engineer, now president of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co., and stripping methods between 1917 and 1931 were the subject of a paper in 1931 by H. H. Otto,2 of the Hudson Coal Company. The present paper is confined to methods used today on pitching beds in the western middle and southern anthracite fields. The anthracite industry, not unlike other large industries, had been affected for more than a decade by the adverse economic conditions of the country. High development and operating costs and the competition of other fuels caused some collieries to be closed temporarily, while others were permanently abandoned. In order to obtain a larger tonnage at a lower development cost, a larger stripping program was put into effect by many companies. In 1932, stripping operations accounted for 3½ million tons, or 7 per cent of the total anthracite production of the year, and in the next 10 years this increased until more than double that amount, or over 14 per cent of the total production, was from stripping operations. These figures represent the total production of the entire anthracite region; unfortunately, the figures have not been separated from the different fields. There are some operations in the southern and middle western fields where the tonnage obtained from stripping amounts to more than 30 per cent of the total colliery production. Stripping operations on pitching beds present difficult problems. Owing to the various geological formations, a different situation is encountered in nearly every stripping pit; and because of the proximity of an overlying bed, it is very often necessary to load the entire overburden into trucks and haul it out of the pit to the dump area, although back filling and casting is done whenever possible. Beds in the areas described in this paper pitch from 20" to 90° and some are on the invert in many sharp folds and faults. Planning The more successful strippings have had adequate engineering analysis. Some work is being done without much preliminary planning, but many strippings would have failed completely if close supervision by the engineering department had not been maintained. Locations of stripping areas are determined as follows: I. By constructing cross sections over the areas and drilling sufficient diamond-drill or well drill holes to study the strata and to determine the location, thickness and pitch of the beds.

The effect of temperature on the physical properties of structural materials has been the subject of many investigations during the past decade. The literature on the effect of elevated temperatures. is voluminous, and during the last four years a great deal of experimental work has been carried out on the effect of low temperatures on the impact properties of steel. For many engineering purposes it is important to know the shock resistance of steels at low atmospheric temperatures, and with the ever-developing field of refrigeration and separation of materials at low temperatures, the normal limits of atmospheric temperature have been exceeded in practice. Iron and its alloys in the unnotched condition have a high impact strength at low temperatures, but in practice variations in type of notches result either from design or accidentally through scratches and surface or internal defects. A study of notched bar impact tests is, therefore, highly important to the engineer. A survey of the literature on low temperature impact testing indicates that chemical composition, heat treatment and method of testing have been the variables which have been considered in most previous work. In only a few instances has any mention of the steel- making method been mentioned and in these the comparison was between steel-making processes and not between steel-making methods on the same process. In view of the wide variations in impact properties at room temperature, in quench and strain ageing and in grain growth of steels of identical chemical composition, (by this is meant the usual five element analysis reported), it was felt

THE lattice parameter of the ß form of pure titanium has been measured at elevated temperature.', ' No attempt was made, however, to correct the parameter obtained to room temperature. In the course of phase diagram studies at Armour Research Foundation and elsewhere, the variation of ß-phase lattice parameter with composition has been established in a number of binary and ternary systems involving titanium. It was possible to extrapolate in these instances to 100 pct Ti to find the apparent lattice parameter of ß titanium at room temperature. Table I lists the results thus obtained. The suggested value for the lattice parameter of ß titanium is the average of the extrapolated values 3.276 ±0.003 kX. This suggested value gives an interatomic distance in ± titanium of 2.837 kX and hence a Goldschmidt atomic diameter (coordination number 12) of 2.925 kX. The latter agrees closely with the value of 2.93 given by Hume-Rothery." From the data of Adenstedt and coworkers' it was possible to determine by extrapolation the mean coefficient of linear expansion for /3 titanium in the range from room temperature to 1000°C. This value, 10.1x10-8 per degree C, compares with about 11x10-8 for a titanium in a similar range." It was thus possible to calculate the parameter at 900 °C. The value of 3.305 kX agrees well with 3.3065 given by Eppel-sheimer.' The majority of values reported in the literature7-', ' were given as Angstroms. In at least one case, ref. 8, it was shown that they actually represented kX units. The source of this confusion appears to be that a large number of tables of X-ray emission spectra list wavelengths as Angstroms and give values in kX units. The accepted conversion factor for kX units to Angstroms (10.' cm) is 1.00202. Thus the parameter of ß titanium suggested corresponds to 3.282A. References J. H. de Boer, W. G. Burgers, and J. D. IN THE operation of oil properties there are various difficulties with pumping wells which can often be overcome or greatly lessened if sufficient attention is, directed towards pump and tubing problems. The difficulties referred to are the wearing out of pumps, sanding up of pumps, and the sanding up of the hole. As the perforations in the oil strings are large and the oil and sand loose and unconsolidated considerable trouble is often encountered in pumping wells due to the ease with which' the sand can come into the holes. DETERMINING FLUID LEVEL In determining the proper depth at which to tube a well it is essential to first find out something about the behavior of the fluid in 'the hole: Facts in regard to this natter can be obtained by finding the fluid level on pulling the tubing, by making a pumping test on the well tubed to various depths, and by bailing tests during cleaning out work. In ordinary oil field operations it is customary to take the fluid level at the time of pulling the tubing. This 'can only be done when the pump is not sanded up. The high-grade orebody at Miami was mined successively by top-slicing, shrinkage, stoping and under caving. The method described in this paper was developed to enable the low-grade orebody (36,000,000 tons assaying 1.06 per cent copper) to be mined at a low cost without further dilution of the grade. The method is clearly described and illustrated by drawings and photographs, and the original paper should be consulted as it is impracticable to abstract it, beyond noting that the mining cost is just under 40 cents per ton and the average grade of ore now being produced yields less copper than the mill tailing of 1915, the tons mined per day having increased from 4000 to 18,000 in the same period. Vertical and Incline Shaft Sinking at North Star Mine By Arthur B. Foote, Grass Valley, Calif. (Tech. Pub. No. 324: Class A. Metal Mining, No. 36) THE main shaft of the North Star mine is an inclined one following the main vein at an average dip of 26 deg., a vertical shaft intersects it at the 4000-ft. (incline) level, the incline continuing to the 6300-ft. level. At this point the vein was found to give out and a new vein, called the No. 1, was found to dip in exactly the opposite direction.

IN giving a sketch of the geology and mining of the tin-deposits of Cape Prince of Wales, a short description of the geographic and climatic conditions may be of special interest on account of this being a part of the world of which very little is known, even by the reading public. As shown in Fig. 1, the location of the Cape is lat. N. 65° 35' and long. W. 168°. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic ocean ; on the west by Bering strait and on the south by Bering sea. It is the western-most point of the mainland of North America, and to the west, across the strait, one can see East Cape, Siberia, which consists of a rugged, steep coast of granite cliffs. The climatic conditions are of interest because of the part they have had in the surface geology, and also because they affect mining from an economic standpoint. In connection with the climate and geography, it does not seem out of place here to quote a few lines from the prologue of The Wandering Jew, written by Eugene Sue, under the caption '1 The Land's End of Two Worlds."

Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, AIME Vol. 121, edited by Dr. C. R. Hayward in 1936, remains a document of importance today even though 34 years have passed in the meantime. Since nothing in this world seems to be permanent, however, and progress brings new and better ways to do things, a two-volume set has just been published to bring the state of the art of 1936 up to date. This two-volume set, Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc and Extractive Metallurgy of Lead and zinc, incorporates the papers to be presented during the Proceedings of the 1970 World Symposium on the Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc. The Symposium is being held October 20-24, 1970, in St. Louis, a site near to the famous Lead Belt of southeast Missouri. Some eighty papers are bound in these two volumes covering exploration, geology, mining, concentrating, roasting, smelting, electrolytic processing, residue fuming, refining, etc. All of this is laced with data on tonnages, processes, assays and efficiencies obtained, and the man-hours and equipment needed to achieve these performances.

Paradoxical is the word. The coal industry, despite reach- ing a 22-year high in production (590 million tons), has been tagged as having its back to the wall vis-a-vis its valiant attempts to quench the nation's still unabated craving for coal. What must be even more reassuring to the industry, infected once with rumors of a uranium takeover, is a nation's almost insatiable appetite for electricity. Between 1967 and the summer of 1970, utility stockpiles were being gobbled up, diminishing to 79% of the January 1968 level.

Grain boundary attack in 16 pct HCl was found to be substantially the same at low penetrations in zone-refined aluminum (individual impurities 0.1 at. ppm), superior electrolytically refined aluminum (51 at. ppm), and aluminum with various impurities at much higher levels. It was concluded that impurity atom segregation affecting corrosion would have been detected and that the corrosion susceptibility did not originate in this segregation but in the structure of the boundary. It was pointed out that the significance of most previous studies in this system had been obscured by an unrecognized autocatalytic copper reaction. Although general corrosion rate was also impurity-insensitive , there was shallow pitting attributed to iron seg-regation and a hillocked surface texture associated with copper; these were interpreted as due to cathodic damage affecting- cathode distribution. THE grain boundary corrosion suffered by high-purity aluminum in hydrochloric acid has been the object of some interest (the earlier work is summarized in Ref. 1). The central metallurgical question here is whether the corrosion susceptibility of a boundary originates in its structure or in impurity atom segregation. An attempt to study this question revealed large catalytic effects associated with small quantities of the copper impurity in the aluminum, 220 ppm, or in the corrodent, and these magnified the preferential boundary attack and obscured the intrinsic susceptibility question.' After the catalytic effects had been examined,"' test conditions could be designed to avoid them and methods developed for studying the shallow boundary penetrations prevailing when they were absent.= It then became possible to determine whether intrinsic boundary corrosion in aluminum involves impurity segregation. The older work provided no firm information on grain boundary segregation of specific solutes influencing corrosion although several studies suggested iron segregates.4,5 perryman4 found in 10 pct HC1 that the slowly developing (microns per month) grain boundary grooves were deeper in material of higher iron content (range 10 to 550 ppm, with 5 to 80 pprn Cu) but he did not measure the depths of general corrosion, which were probably several times greater, and his reference surfaces may have varied more than did the groove depths. Metzger and Intrater's results for 20 pct HC~,' which yielded higher time-average rates (mm per month) and deeper penetrations, suggested that boundary segregation of iron (range 4 to 230 ppm, with 22 pprn Cu) decreased the penetration rate. IMD effect of the copper impurity is greater1,2 and it is now evident that their corrosion rates had been much magnified by this effect and did not provide a proper basis for the analysis of segregation. In exploratory studies of other solutes (made under the same conditions), 1000 ppm additions of Mg, Mn, or Si or 100 ppm Ca were without effect.1 Montariol6 noted that boundary attack in 22 pct HC1 persisted after zone refining although with fewer deep fissures (ranges 0.06 to 4 ppm Cu, 4 to 23 ppm Fe). Autocatalytic effects may have influenced these results also and those of Perryman.4 The present objective was, as a first step, to see whether quantitative tests designed to exclude autocatalytic influences would indicate the existence of low-level impurity effects on intrinsic boundary corrosion. Comparison of electrolytically refined with zone-refined aluminum of lower copper and iron contents revealed no differences in boundary corrosion, but certain impurity-sensitive differences in general corrosion morphology were noted and investigated further at higher impurity levels. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material. A selection from commercially available material was made with the cooperation of several producers. An electrolytically refined lot (III-A, 1 ppm Cu, 2.4 ppm Fe) studied previously3 provided a starting point. Since material of substantially higher copper content could not be used if the autocatalytic corrosion reaction were to be avoided,2,3 a lot (III-B) of about the same purity was added as a check, two zone-refined lots (I-A and I-B) with copper and iron an order of magnitude lower were selected for comparison, and an intermediate lot (11) was included. Analytical data are given in Table I. For copper in I-B and iron in I-A and I-B, the actual concentration is thought to be near the limit given, i.e., about 0.1 ppm. For titanium, vanadium, and chromium in III-B, the actual amounts are thought to be, like those in III-A, substantially lower than in the zone-refined lots (these elements concentrate in the solid on freezing). Data are given later for some additional lots surveved. B) Specimen Preparation and Procedure. one by 3 cm blanks with a notched stem were cut from 1-mm cold-rolled sheet, annealed 24 hr in air at 650°C, and quenched in an air stream (42°C per sec initial cooling rate, 100 sec to cool to 100°C). The high annealing temperature maximized diffusivities and approach to equilibrium impurity distributions. A water quench, in principle more efficient in preserving the distribution established, was undesirable because the boundaries were almost plane and they tended to shear and migrate during the quench and thus to be separated from any existing impurity atmosphere. MOST important of the naturalcalcium silicates is the meta¬silicate, CaSi03, known as wollastonite, after W. H. Wollaston. A large deposit of this mineral was dis¬covered some seven years ago near Code Siding, Rademacher mining dis¬trict, Kern County, Calif., the deposit being some 7500 ft. long and of an average width of 300 ft. It consists of a series of small domes striking north¬erly and southerly and with a dip of 81 ° to the south. This deposit was opened up by a series of small quarries showing a potential tonnage of 12,000,¬000 tons, allowing of cheap mining and transportation, the Southern Pa¬cific R.R. spur track being one mile north of the workings. Numerous sam¬ples taken from different points on the deposit, tested by Mr. Brinker, of the California Testing Laboratories, Los Angeles, showed an average as fol¬lows: Per Cent Silica (SiO2) 47.12 Lime (CaO) 41.72 Magnesia (MgO) 2.72 Alkalies (R,0) Trace Iron (Fe.,O,) 1.60 whereas the theoretical composition of of wollastonite, as given by William Shirley Bayley, is as follows: Silica 51.75 Lime 45.25 The tonnage and purity of this de¬posit led to investigations into its com¬mercial development. Early work es¬tablished the fact that wollastonite was ideal for the manufacture of a tough, almost unbreakable, glass similar to Pyrex. It also established the fact that wollastonite was particularly adapted for use in the manufacture of mineral wool, towards which further research was then directed. Briefly, the prin¬cipal advantages were the substantially unvarying chemical composition of the naturally occurring mineral and its characteristic of being relatively flexi¬ble and highly resilient when fused into a glass. A mineral wool produced therefrom is thus not only of highly uniform composition and color but is most desirable because of the high mechanical strength and length of the individual fibers constituting the wool. It is well known that mineral wool may be prepared by melting a suitable charge of raw material and then intro¬ducing a stream of a suitable fluid, such as air or steam, into a stream of the molten raw material. By this means the molten material is blown into threads or fibers, which are collected in a suitable chamber similar to a tun¬nel, from which they are removed from time to time or continuously. The surface tension of lead-tellurium alloys (in the range 0 to 6.70 at. pct Te) ad lead-arsenic alloys (in the range 0 to 10.53 at. pct As) has been examined by the maximum bubble pressure method. The surface tension of high purity lead can be expressed over a range of temperatures (M.P. to 750°C) by the relationship = 512 — 0.133t. Arsenic and lellurium were both found to be surface active in lead. The surface excess concentration at 700°C was .found to be constant at 0.74 x 10-10 moles per sq cm for tellurium. The surface excess of arsenic at 700°C varied between 0.26 x 10-10 moles per sq cm at 0.16 at. pct to 1.5 x 10-10 moles per sq cm at 8.3 at. pet. The surface tension of lead has been investigated sporadically over the last 90 years. The first recorded study was made by Quincke1 who used a rather crude application of the drop-weight method. Hogness2 obtained the first reliable value for the surface tension of lead by measuring the pressure necessary to force the liquid metal from the end of a small capillary of known radius. Hogness gives the empirical formula: ?(surface tension)= 444 - 0.077 (l-327) which describes the relationship between surface tension and temperature ("C); This work was followed by that of Bircumshaw3 who applied the two-capillar maximum bubble pressure method of Sugden.4 The values published by Bircumshaw are in good agreement with those found by Hogness. Matuyama5 examined the surface tension of lead by the drop weight method. However, the values found are somewhat higher than those previously reported. More recent investigations by Greenaway6 and by Melford and oar' have resulted in data which are not in close agreement, but which are well within the expected range at most temperature levels. The study of the surface tension of lead alloys began with Drath and sauerwald8 who examined the lead-bismuth system. They found that the surface tension values of the alloys in this system deviated only slightly from the ideal mixture rule. Matuyarna5 examined the lead-antimony system. Bircumshaw the lead-tin, and the lead-indium system was studied by Hoar and Me1ford.10 The results of these investi- gations are summarized in Fig. 1. It may be seen that the data vary only slightly from the ideal mixture rule. As none of the metals studied and reported in the literature has a very interesting effect on the surface tension of lead,*the next logical step might be to examine the effect of metals of low solubility or nonmetals having some liquid solubility. Baes, and Kellogg11 have pointed out that the elements most likely to be surface active in liquid metals are ones of limited solubility in the liquid state and possessing weak intermolecular bonding forces in the solid state. Therefore, Group V, VI and VII nonmetals are most likely to be surface active. It was decided to examine the effect of a borderline metal, arsenic, and a nonmetal tellurium. Arsenic forms a eutectic with lead having a melting point of 290°C and a composition of 6.9 at. pct As.13 Pure arsenic sublimes when heated above 610°C. Even though alloying with lead lowers the vapor pressure, fumes containing arsenic are evolved at a very noticeable rate when lead-arsenic alloys are heated above 650°C. Tellurium raises the liquidus temperature of lead sharply to 904°C,14 the melting point of PbTe (lead-telluride). The solid solubility of tellurium in lead was determined by Greenwood and worner15 to be 0.0007 at. pct at room temperature. THE heavy shrinkage in the production of bituminous coal has reflected adversely in the matter of tonnage produced by stripping arid mechanical loading machinery. The purchase of stripping and underground loading equipment has likewise been circumscribed. How- .ever a growing percentage of bituminous coal is being loaded by stripping and mechanical loading machinery. This situation is due to the fact that numerous strip pits were able to operate in Illinois and Indiana when under- cover mines were subjected to labor interference, a further advantage gained by their ability to produce and market coal at a price below that of the undercover mines. The mines equipped with mechanical loading. apparatus have enjoyed more continued operation for the double reason that the companies using coal-loading machinery are, generally speaking, more substantial and in better financial condition than many of the smaller properties who maintain hand-loading methods, and the market advantage due to lower production costs also reflects to the advantage of the undercover mines using mechanical loading equipment. Where a number of mines are con- trolled by one company, those not equipped with loading machinery and suffering from higher producing costs have often been closed, with the available tonnage concentrated in the more modernly equipped mines.

The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 Stat., 190; 30 U.S.C. Sup., Secs. 321- 325) was approved by Congress April 5, 1944; it directed the Bureau of Mines to build demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shale, and agricultural products. The most important oil-shale de- posits in the United States are in the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The oil shale of western Colorado generally is more amenable to exploitation, more persistent, and apparently richer than elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region. It occurs at the top of a high plateau surrounded by bold, nearly vertical escarpments 500 to 600 ft in height. The top 400 to 500 ft of these escarpments comprises an oil-shale measure that averages 15 gal of shale oil per ton; the bottom 70 to 100 ft of the measure, called the Mahogany Ledge, averages over 30 gal per ton. The full measure in a 1000-square-mile area is estimated to contain 300 billion barrels of shale oil;' the Mahogany Ledge is estimated to contain 100 billion barrels of oil. These estimates are based on numerous surface samples and on core-drill holes drilled by the Government and by private enterprise. The oil-shale beds are undisturbed and lie nearly horizontal. OVER the past two decades, the Cr-Ni stainless steels, popularly termed 18-8 steels, have been used in ever increasing amounts in the aircraft, automotive, chemical, transportation, and building industries.' The contribution of nickel to these steels is associated with its strong austenite forming tendencies which assure good hot and cold forming characteristics, and with its beneficial influence upon corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing acids. The adjustment of the chromium and nickel contents has been used advantageously in controlling the rollability and the response of the mechanical properties of these steels to cold reduction. With the advent of the jet age and the government stockpiling of nickel, considerable emphasis has been placed upon the development of satisfactory low nickel or nickel-free substitute austenitic stainless steels, especially for nonmilitary applications.2 Fer-ritic 17 pct Cr (AISI Type 430) stainless steel has been effectively substituted for the austenitic grades in applications with mildly corrosive exposure. However, the limited formability and ferromagnetic behavior of this grade do not permit its satisfactory use for many applications. To achieve better formability in a nenmagnetic steel and conserve nickel, a number of low nickel substitute austenitic grades of stainless steel have been developed in recent years. In most of these steels, manganese and nitrogen have been substituted for a portion of the nickel content, for example, 17 pct Cr-4 pct Ni-6 pct Mn (AISI Type 201), 18 pct Cr-5 pct Ni-8 pct Mn (AISI Type 202), and 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, all of which contain approximately 0.15 pct N.1 The precipitation of ferrite when large ingots of these Cr-Ni-Mn-N steels are heated to temperatures high enough for conversion to slabs on conventional universal slabbing mills has seriously affected the hot workability of these steels. This has been especially true in the case of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn (sometimes referred to as 15 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-15 pct Mn) composition." Because it is possible that little, if any, nickel will be available for nonmilitary stainless steel applications in the event of a national emergency, a need has existed for a nickel-free austenitic stainless steel containing hot and cold forming characteristics similar to 18-8 steels and corrosion resistance at least comparable to the 17 pct Cr ferritic steel. The aforementioned deleterious effect of ferrite upon the hot working characteristics of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, steel indicates the importance of establishing the austenite-austenite plus ferrite phase boundaries as the first step in the development of nickel-free or low nickel substitute steels. This paper presents the data collected in an elevated temperature constitutional study of the Cr-Ni-Mn-N system at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp. Experimental Procedure The 300 compositions used in the investigation were melted in a 26 Ib induction furnace and cast in 3 14 in. diam by 18 in tall hot-tcpped ingot mo1ds.

The Candelaria deposit was first discovered by Spanish prospectors in 1863; but its silver ore was not exploited on a large scale until 1873, when the Northern Belle mine was opened. The first Northern Belle mill was built at Belleville, 13 km (8 miles) to the northwest. From 1876 to 1886 the Northern Belle paid over $1 million in dividends each year. In 1882 a 43 km (27 miles) pipeline was built to Candelaria from the White Mountains to the west to furnish water for the mills and town at Candelaria; it was 100 mm (4 in.) in diameter, hand- riveted, and made in England. Sections of this pipe are used. as claim posts today. At its terminus at Metallic City, above Candelaria, a large concrete reservoir was built and called Metallic Lake. It is being used today by Candelaria Partners. Production at Candelaria declined after the mid-1980s, revived for a short period in the early 1890s, and during the 1920s a 300 ton mill operated for three years. Candelaria Partners is owned jointly by Occidental Minerals and Congdon and Carey, with Occidental being the operator. An engineering study done in mid-1979 resulted in engineering for the plant commencing in late that year and heap leaching being started in September 1980. Two million tons of ore per year containing 108 g Ag and 0.28 g Au per mt (3.15 oz Ag and 0.008 oz Au per st) will be mined from the Lucky Hill and Mount Diablo .areas about 1.6 km (1 mile) up Pickhandle gulch from the heap leaching operation. Waste -to -ore ratio is about 2:l. Ore is mined by front-end loaders and hauled by 85 ton trucks to the primary crusher, a 1,070 by 1,780 mm (42 by 70 in. ) gyratory. Primary crushed ore is conveyed to a stockpile of 10,000 tons live capacity from which it is reclaimed by hydraulic reciprocating feeders and conveyed to the crushing and agglomeration facility. This unit is composed of a 1.8 m by 2.6. m (6 ft by 12 ft) double deck screen, a 2.1 m (7 ft) standard cone crusher, and three conveyors. At the conveyor transfer points NaOH and NaCN solution is sprayed on the ore as it falls through a row of 75 mm (3 in.) hanging steel bars. During this process of turning and dividing the ore, the fines agglomerate with the coarse ore to give better percolation for the leach solution on the heaps. Provision was made for the later addition of 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st) of cement to aid in the agglomeration. Agglomerated ore at minus 50 mm (2 in.) size is then conveyed to a 390 mt (430 st) loadout bin where it is transferred to 85 ton rear dump trucks for haulage to the leach pads.
