This report describes the design, development and manufacture of a prototype quiet hard rock stoper drill and results of its field tests. It is shown that the stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using this design. The design concept of this drill is based on a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and pivot mount. The drill was manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

One of the most attractive subjects for technical writers is the gigantic industry of the manufacture of sulphuric acid. This is no doubt, natural when we take into account that it has grown in this country during the past twenty years, from a production of 60,000 tons in the year 1867, to that of nearly 450,000 tons in 1887. We may well excuse much of the literature which but repeats the same old story, as it serves to bring to the public notice, at proper intervals, the hidden resources of our land; and this constant application of essential truths will sooner or later be the means of freeing us from dependence upon the Old World for necessary chemical products. The present increase in manufacture of this acid in the United States is almost wholly from pyrites ores, which we have in unlimited quantities close at hand. The largest consumption of such acid is for treatment of other native products, petroleum, rock-phosphates, etc.; and, considering the knowledge we have gained during the past twenty years, it is safe to say that the industry is but fairly established, and the causes which have operated to place us in our present proud position are but natural incentives for a further growth and an increased consumption of the many other undiscovered or undeveloped resources of our American soi1. In one of his earlier editions Muspratt says: " It would seem that the manufacture of sulphuric acid, though as extensively carried on as any other business, yet seems to be the least understood; and the ignorance of some manufacturers appears to be only equalled by that of writers, who, in their description of the production of this acid, give figures of apparatus, and vaunt as improvements, things which have been exploded for years. It is possible to find in the works of eminent men drawings of apparatus, for the production of sulphuric acid, which never could possibly have worked one day—some, in fact, could never have worked at all."

Introduction Only a person fresh from an information vacuum could not know the status of this nation's economy. The inability of the US to compete in the world marketplace is manifested in many industries, from shoes to computer chips, from cars to copper. What industry will next fall prey to world competition? Perhaps the question should be, what insustry will next fall prey to declining productivity? American industry is being forced into an era where the focus must be on productivity, quality, cost control, and competition in the world marketplace. It is approaching a change that could rival the American Industrial Revolution. The future of the US is bright only if it can increase productivity by trying different and new ways to manage its businesses and people. Unlike the easy successes during the 60s and 70s, success in the decades ahead will depend on an ability to compete in the world market. Any operation can achieve unlimited productivity by developing the resources within its employees. As an industry, mining has harvested the earth's resources. As an industry in trouble, it now has to learn to tap human resources to release the energy and creativity in each person. Recently, I worked with a mining operation to reopen a mine and implement a different management approach. The extensive changes resulted in a 50% reduction in cash cost of producing silver (from $0.40 to $0.19/g or from $12.50 to $6 per oz). Thus, an unprofitable mine became an attractive business venture without technological changes or significant capital infusion. The operation is union-free, in spite of being in a highly unionized area. The mine implemented a real productivity improvement process called "gain-sharing." Employees now recognize their individual success is tied to the success of the business. They recognize the day of the free lunch is over for mining employees. This paper will explore three areas related to productivity: • some of the unspoken "whys" of the mining industry's paralysis and how management has caused unproductiveness in mining operations; • major components of a productivity improvement process; and • characteristics common to companies with successful productivity plans. Unspoken whys When things go wrong, everyone tends to point a finger at someone, anyone. This industry has blamed every conceivable person, corporate group, government agency, foreign government, and private group for its failures. The fault finger will not work anymore. Nobody is listening. It is a characteristic of winners in management to assume responsibility for less than acceptable performance. Excellent people tend to blame others less for problems. Everyone involved in mining should shoulder part of the blame for the industry's illness. Is the problem low prices or our high operating costs? To regain our status in the world marketplace and increase our productivity, we need to painfully and honestly talk about our mistakes.

IN 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd., at Timmins, Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only-the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitalization, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee-mother, father, or other relative-who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. This paper, describing the mining practices at the Pilares mine, Pilares de Nacozari, Sonora, Mexico, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts. At present (1930) practically all the mineral production from the Nacozari district is from the Pilares mine of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation. The ore is mined for its copper but contains associated silver in small quantities.

"In the base metals industry of today, operations required to continuously improve productivity and reduce unit production costs. Consistent with these goals is the improvement of the muck haulage cycle from open stopes with the No. 12 Mine.Existing haulage from open stopes occurs with LHD units experience at Brunswick indicates that LHD units have a higher unit cost per tonne mucked than loader-truck combinations when the haulage exceeds approximately 150 m.The reintroduction of open stoping at Brunswick made existing loader-truck combinations unsuitable. It was recognized that application of recent continuous loading technology could potentially result in significant unit cost savings and productivity increases.A review of the technology resulted in the testing of the Voest Alpine AL60 loader in the open stopes located on the 1000m Le vel. Testing began in January 1988 and finished in late November 1988. The test will provide experience as well as quantified production and maintenenace parameters f or the purpose of quantifying production unit costs and system productivity, ultimately resulting in a decision to further utilize or not utilize the loader as a primarymucking unit at Brunswick .INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. produces approximately 10500 tonnes per day from the No. 12Mine located 35 km southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick Mining is the largest (single mine) producer of zinc in the world having mined over 52 million tonnes since 1964. Many years of production still remain with proven and probable reserves in excess of 90 million tonnes. Reserves grade at an average of 3.65% Pb. 8.99070 Zn, 99g/mt Ag and 0.32% Cu . The operation employs 1446 people with approximately 800underground including operations and maintenance staff.In the No. 12 Mine two major mining methods are presently utilized . The primary method is Mechanized Cut and Fill (MCF) accounting for approximately 6500 tonnes per day from four major areas. The remaining 4000 tonnes per day is produced from open stopes with the majority of 2800 tonnes per day being produced by the 1000 level.The 1000Level contains 30 million tonnes segmented into open stope blocks 30 m high, 15m and 30 m on strike , with a transverse width of 10m to 50 m (Fig. I). Stopes are organized on a primary secondary stope arrangement along strike. Primary stopes are undercut and overcut full size with the back fully cablebolted. All stope and lateral development is driven 4.0 m high. All stopes to date are flat bottom (Fig. 2). Primary stopes are filled with cemented rock- fill , secondaries with conventional rockfill, Haulage from the stopes is primarily with 8-yard LHD units ; mucking is approximately 50% conventional and 50% remote. Haul distance to date has averaged approximately 150m with current stope haul distances of approximately 300m. Haulage is presently to a small jaw crusher situated on the 1000 Level. From August 1989on, haulage will be to a set of ore passes feeding to a large gyratory crusher situated on the 1200 Level. Start up of the gyratory crusher corresponds to an increase in tonnage from 1000 Level to 4100 tonnes per day."

It is important to recover and reuse the metal values contained in various industrial wastes in a viewpoint of environmental preservation. Most of industrial products are made through the processes to separate impurities in raw materials, solid and liquid wastes being necessarily discharged as industrial wastes. Chemical methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange and membrane, and physical methods such as heavy media separation, magnetic separation and electrostatic separation are considered as the methods for separation and recovery of the metal values from the wastes. In this paper, some examples of the application of solvent extraction to the treatment of wastes are introduced. The treatment of solid wastes such as Ni-Co alloy scrap, Sm-Co alloy scrap, fly ash and flue dust, and liquid wastes such as plating solution, the rinse water, etching solution and pickling solution are accomplished using solvent extraction technique.

Although near-term prospects are poor for recycling most present wastes, urban refuse is an important exception. Such wastes comprise a mine above ground, and much less processing energy is normally required to recycle the constituents of urban ore than to obtain them in equal amounts from natural raw materials.

"Specialized numerical modeling codes have been developed over the years to estimate ground stresses during the excavation of coal in underground mines. One of these tools, MULSIM, a displacement discontinuity boundary element code, was last developed by Zipf into a version called MULSIM/NL [USBM 1992a, 1992b]. The code was used frequently in years past, but closure of the Bureau of Mines in 1996 marked the beginning of a pause in its development. A similar tool with distinctly different treatment of overburden idealization, LaModel, was subsequently developed [Heasley 1997] and largely displaced MULSIM/NL in the literature. However, recent work modeling deep western longwall coal mines [Larson and Whyatt 2013] has demonstrated that MULSIM has distinct advantages for regions with relatively stiff and strong overburden. This work required that MULSIM be revived and updated into a version called MulsimNL/Large. Updates include larger array sizes, greater precision, greater number of materials, and the addition of a five-point, six-segment pillar load/displacement model that provides the user a more flexible coal-strength model allowing hardening and softening before a final residual strength. MulsimNL/Large has the ability to calibrate to large load transfer distances observed in some western U.S. coal mines that appear to be caused by strong, massive units in the overburden and/or floor of a coal mine. Also, it provides the ability to calibrate gob stiffness to simulate measurements or estimates of overpanel weight distribution between gob and abutment, while still maintaining load transfer distance with minor adjustments. MulsimNL/Large can easily implement material strengths calculated from various pillar strength models. The five-point model gives MulsimNL/Large the ability to easily simulate pillar behavior that is extracted from detailed pillar models, such as FLAC3D. MulsimNL/Large or similar approaches should be considered for evaluating mining layouts where stratigraphic conditions are known to cause overpanel weight to transfer to an extent significantly longer than the empirical method widely used to calculate load transfer distances in the U.S. [Peng and Chiang 1984; Mark 1987; USBM 1990]."

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

From the title of this chapter the reader could expect an attempt to outline the anticipated shape of things to come, mineralwise. We have no crystal ball and if we possessed one we could claim no expertness in its use. In the first place no one can tell the future status of man. No one has any way of knowing to what extent peace will prevail, nor to what extent changes may occur in national sovereignties or forms of government or in international relationships. So future man is an uncertainty. Nor can we predict new developments that may result in significant changes in man's status or in the mineral industry or both. If, for example, this chapter had been written in the middle 1930's, nearly everything that has happened since in the field of atomic energy would have been missed. Yet what a vast change this has made in the status of man! Also the changes in the mineral industry have been important. A writer would have been bold indeed had he prophesied that uranium would play such an important role. But we need not confine our foggy vision to the atomic energy field. The steep rise in the use of aluminum, titanium, and germanium reflects the unpredictable in what may be thought of as the more normal pursuits. This should not discourage one from using the past and currently observable trends as bases for limited predictions. To do this, however, it is desirable to make certain assumptions about man's status without even a pretense that these assumptions have a high probability of fulfillment: 1. Only minor changes will occur in the geographical boundaries of the nations of the world. 2. World War III will not take place in the near future. 3. As a consequence of (2), man will not destroy himself by wanton use of atomic weapons. 4. Disarmament will take place, if at all, gradually rather than all at one time. Under the above assumptions the world will enjoy a period of relative peace even though the status may be one of an armed truce. The assump-

The increase in metals demand in the electrifying globe means significant growth in the smelting of copper, nickel, zinc, and lead, produced from primary sulfide sources or using sulfide mattes as the intermediates of the process chains. This means that leaner and complex mineral deposits will be evaluated as ores and are in the future traded in the commodity market for smelting and refining to pure metals. An important issue in the trend is the technology metals, like antimony, tellurium, and gallium, which exist as trace elements in sulfide ores and form no ores of their own. Their recovery becomes important in the coming decades as will be the case with growing slag amounts without use in other industries. The key is to produce environmentally acceptable slags in the smelting operations. It sets new boundary conditions to the treatment of flue dusts. This means that all material streams of smelting and refining must be re-evaluated for the deportments of the main and minority metals. In copper smelting, the recoveries of precious metals are today important for the feasibility of the custom smelters but due to low prices of many minority metals they are discarded in slag landfills. It is one of the emerging issues also in the secondary copper smelting today and once the demand grows, the same question will be faced also in the mining-beneficiation-smelting-refining chain of the primary production of nickel, zinc, and lead. The distributions of many technology metals in the copper and nickel smelting have been recently studied using methods where the chemically bound trace elements in the slag and its phases at the smelting conditions have been studied. Thus, the key data about options for process modifications and additional processing steps are piling up. Short processing routes in the metals smelting and refining are attractive due to their simplicity. At the same time, complexity of many raw materials challenges the fluxing at high oxygen partial pressures in low silica slags with high metal concentrations. The compromise between high primary recovery and safe operation is a demanding task in conditions where slag foaming outside the processing window is evident. The increase in the demand of pure nickel is challenging the raw material basis where low-grade sulfide ores are soon smelted along with nickel laterites to matte. It is a demanding task at high MgO concentrations. The low solubility of MgO in iron silicate slags requires new fluxing strategies and new smelting end points for the operation at reasonable temperatures; the direct nickel matte smelting in one-matte mode may be an option.

A small static bed was used to study the thermal cycles required for the heat hardening of pellets based on synthetic magnetite concentrates and a naturally fine hematite. This apparatus can be employed to yield broad process data for the design of a recuperative strand system operating on the magnetite concentrates.Various alternatives are given for a process to heat harden the hematite ore but a preference is given to the production of a self fluxing pellet. Bond types and general mineralogical structures are interpreted against the optimum firing cycle necessary to produce a defined quality of pellet.INTRODUCTIONThe work reported in this paper extends that on the "Heat Hardening of Artificial Magnetite Pellets", which was described at the International Symposium on Agglomeration, sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers at Philadelphia, U.S.A. in April 1961. Whereas that work was of a more basic nature, serving to illustrate the suitability of artificial magnetites with various admixtures, to the application of heat hardened pellets, on this occasion the aim is to illustrate the procedures which were used to establish the dimensions of commercial recuperative strands for Australian raw materials.The nature of the pellet feed, Le. relatively uniform spheres of + i in.-Yi6 in. diameter, makes it possible to use small scale static pots for test work. This study is an extension of our previous work in the area of coal transportation Its subject is the comparative costing of competing transport erodes. A wide range of costs and aspects of costs are dealt with in terms of engineering - economic analyses of the cost of the components which make up the facility and operating system descriptions of each coal transport mode. The cost comparisons, though analyzed, are not meant to be statements of policy but, rather, an input to decision making. The technical material presented in the succeeding volumes, alone with the earlier work cited above, forms the basis for the analyses. This material may also broaden the general understanding of coal transportation issues and problems. The project is divided into two main sections: (1) lone distance coal transport and (2) gathering and distribution systems. Within each section economic and technological comparisons are made of the available modes. These are used as the basis for comparisons among the modes. Inter-modal compatibility is studied with respect to both mixed trunk line shipment anti with respect to feeder to trunk line and trunk line to distribution systems. The engineering and technological data form the bases for the costing and economic analyses.

The key aspects of process metallurgy that distinguish platinum group metal (PGM) concentrate smelting from that of other base metal sulphide concentrates are presented. These differences include considerably higher input chrome and magnesia contents that directly raise the slag liquidus temperature and have the potential to increase accumulations of refractory spinels. Most importantly, the higher processing temperature required for PGM smelting, and the resulting very high matte superheat lead to considerably more onerous smelting conditions than those typical of other smelting operations. This has presented challenges to furnace design and integrity, especially when coupled with the progressive intensification of smelting, involving doubling, and then redoubling, of furnace power input over the past 20 years. These power increases have been enabled by increasingly more advanced furnace cooling and structural technologies. Key technologies include strong constant-force spring-loaded bindings acting in three dimensions to minimize infiltration of superheated matte into brick joints, and robust well-cooled tapholes for reliably tapping the superheated matte. The result has been substantially improved productivity, and reduced smelting capital cost outlay per unit of production. A significant challenge that was not anticipated, presented itself in the form of insidious corrosion of the furnace lining, and especially high-intensity copper cooling elements. Investigation of corrosion in related industries eventually identified 'chloride-accelerated sulphidation', and this term has been retained as it generically describes the most pertinent aspects of the accelerated low-temperature wear of copper coolers observed in PGM smelting. In addition to discussing the corrosion mechanism, this paper describes a number of solutions that were developed jointly by Anglo American Platinum and Hatch to address the copper corrosion problem. First, new monitoring technologies allowed furnaces to be operated more safely for a longer period of time. Second, a system for replacing corroded coolers from outside the furnace during a fast 'hot' shutdown minimized the impact on furnace operating factor and hearth life. Finally, a corrosion-resistant graphite-protected cooler design significantly improved furnace campaign life, and heralds a more lasting solution to cooler corrosion in PGM furnaces.

Working in thick coal seams presents many problems, included in these is obtaining the maximum recovery of coal under safe working conditions. In order to obtain maximum extraction it is important to understand the behaviour of pillars left for support purposes. However it is not always the practice to maintain pillar stability it is often required to design for pillar failure. The greatest hazard of pillar mining is uncontrolled pillar collapse. Many major and relatively minor collapses of pillar workings have been recorded in the history of mining. Notable among the collapses was that at Coalbrook Colliery in South Africa in 1960 (Bryan et al 1964). This led to recommendations on the design of bard and pillar workings in South Africa. (Salamon 1967) These design recommendations were based on the statistical analysis of stable and unstable pillar workings and introduced the concept of probability of pillar failure and safety factor. On the basis of this study a safety factor of 1.6 was prescribed for production panels in South Africa. A general review of pillar design procedures, reveals that a new phase of reinterpretation and modification is in progress. This takes into account for instance the effect method of working, whether by conventional drilling and blasting or continuous miner, has on coal pillar strength, and the necessity to review the methods for increasing depth of working. Also, as more is being understood about overall rock mass properties and advanced computer modelling techniques become more readily available, the mine planning engineer is faced with numerous approaches to pillar design.

"Finely disseminated minerals in ores require intensive size reduction to achieve sufficient liberation for the subsequent concentration process. The use of small grinding media in conventional ball mills as a replacement for the usual 2.5 to 3.8 cm balls (1.0 to 1.5 in) produces a finer size distribution at a lower power drawn by the mill motor. However, the conditions ensuring a successful application of using small media for fine grinding are still not fully understood and some plants faced issues to keep the newly introduced steel charge inside the mill during industrial trials. The retention conditions of small media are investigated in this paper using a continuously operated 40 x 40 cm laboratory grinding mill. The tests assess the effect of the steel charge level, the slurry solids concentration and the feed rate on the rate of ejection of the grinding media. The dominant variable is found to be the filling of the mill with the grinding media, followed by the mill feed rate. Results show that increasing the slurry solids concentration within a grinding mill may be favorable for the retention of the media inside the mill.IntroductionProcessing of complex ores often requires the use of fine grinding to liberate finely disseminated minerals. Grinding requirements for a P80 of less than 0.02 mm are not uncommon, and different grinding mills are available for such application (Leonida, 2014; Pease et al., 2006; Davey, 2006; Orford et al., 2006; Nesset et al., 2006). Even conventional horizontal ball mills charged with of 2.5 cm or larger grinding media can be used for fine grinding.
