Attracting and retaining workers in mining industry has become an uphill battle to many mining companies. As workers with significant experience retire, it is getting more difficult to attract not only new workers but also top talent to the mining industry to replace professionals exiting the workforce. To make matters worse, students’ enrolment in the post-secondary mining programs in Canada and USA is continuously declining year after year for reasons not directly linked to job market. This raises a question of how can the future needs of mining be met? This paper focuses on avenues for collaboration of industry and educational institutions to meet the current and future needs of mining. It provides effective approaches that mining institutes can engage with program advisory committees, role of the mining industry in supporting both faculty and students, how to harness the benefits of diverse workforce in the country and use of innovative technologies to attract young workers in mining. This work presents Human Resources (HR) professionals with tools that they can use to hire and retain skilled workers with strong interest to work in the mining industry. It also provides HR professionals with an opportunity to re-evaluate their restructuring practices during economic downturns as they reduce number of employees on temporary or permanent basis. The paper stresses the need of working together of the mining stakeholders including mining industry, academic institutions, First Nations’ communities and provincial(state) and federal governments to meet the current and future demands of mining as the industry experiences shortage of labour and low students’ enrolment in post-secondary mining programs. It is shown that mining educational institutes can enhance their programs and recruitments through establishing a better communication with all stakeholders. This communication can be facilitated by creating a national advisory board, to work with all mining programs at the national level for sustainable mining.

The rock quality designation (RQD) was initially introduced by Deere (1963) for civil engineering. But, its application has been largely extended to rock mechanics and has become a fundamental parameter in geotechnical engineering (e.g., Hoek & Brown 1980; Milne et al. 1998). The success of this definition is due, in great part, to its simplicity. However, this index includes a number of limitations. Among these limitations, a critical one is associated with the arbitrarily selected threshold value (e.g., Priest & Hudson 1976). Consequently, the RQD value would vary with different threshold length for the same core. Also, using the customarily and universally adopted but very arbitrarily selected threshold value of 10 cm (for NX cores) in the assessment of RQD, the RQD values usually tend to be either high or low in most rock engineering. Some intermediate values (50%) are less frequently encountered (Harrison 1999). The original definition of RQD does not well represent the actual quality of rock masses. In this paper, an improved definition of rock quality designation (RQDc) is given.

FOR rapidly marking in geological and topographical features on parish plans, the author has used the Veeder cyclometer with very satisfactory results. A simple Veeder cyclometer, usually retailed at cycle depots at 4s., is fixed to the axle of the front wheel of an ordinary bicycle. The cyclometer is desigued to read in miles and tenths of miles, which are recorded through gearing actuated by a striker on a spoke of the bicycle wheel engaging one of the vanes of the cyclometer once every revolution.By using 80 strikers the reading would be in chains and tenths of chains; therefore the use of 8 strikers gives the reading in chains, utilizing all the figures. The cyclometer is designed to be placed on the right-hand side of the bicycle, and takes up a minimum of space, being only about the size of the top joint of the thumb. With some makes of cycles there is insufficient clearance, so the cyclometer must then be placed on the left side, and the 8 strikers made to engage the top vanes, as shown in the sketch (Fig. 1).Very accurate readings can be obtained by this instrument. "Mining companies globally are currently facing severe economic and financial challenges. In addition to global challenges, the South African mining industry has to face other operational challenges that are unique to the country and which threaten the survival and competitiveness of the industry. Profit margins are being squeezed by rising costs and decreasing commodity prices, while labour productivity is greatly affected by intermittent labour unrest. This paper analyses how the South African gold mining industry has performed pre-, during, and post the global financial crisis of 2008. The competitiveness of the industry in terms of labour productivity and industry cost curve position is analysed for the period 2006–2013 to assess the impacts of both the global financial crisis and labour unrest. An analysis of the South African gold mining industry is presented at company as well as mine level. Productivity measure in this paper is limited to labour productivity, in line with limited reporting on productivity. All the data analysed was obtained from the public domain. IntroductionSouth Africa dominated the world as the number one gold producer until 2009 when China took that position, and today South Africa ranks fifth after China, Australia, Russia, and the USA. According to Statistics South Africa (2009), South Africa still had about 30 years of production in the gold sector, a forecast that fluctuates based on the day’s modifying factors. Although South Africa has a comparative advantage in terms of minerals endowment, there are challenges faced by the mining industry that hinder translation of the comparative advantage into a competitive advantage. The industry continually seeks to address these challenges to remain competitive in global markets while addressing national and community needs.Neingo and Cawood (2014) argued that stakeholders in mining are continually concerned with mine management’s ability to translate use inputs effectively into quality outputs. They further suggested close monitoring of effective utilization of people, materials, and money to obtain maximum production of commodities under given conditions. Frequencies of haulage-related accidents in metal and nonmetal surface mines for the years 1988 through 1990 were investigated and compared with those of non-haulage-related accidents. This study was part of the U.S. Bureau of Mines program to improve mining haulage safety. Data were obtained through the U.S. Bureau of Mines Accident Data Analysis (ADA) program. The chi-square test was used to compare frequencies of haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents for each of the following variables: degree of injury, age, total number of years of mining experience, and shift time. Significance was determined for degree of injury between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents. Age of injured did not vary significantly between haulage-related and non-haulage-related accidents, but total number of years of mining experience was found to be significant. Shift time for the accident proved to vary significantly between haulage-and non-haulage-related accidents. Events causing injury for haulage-related accidents were tabulated, and the most frequent determinants of haulage-related accidents were identified. Accident descriptions for both fatalities and permanent disabilities were studied, and the primary causes of these accidents were identified. These findings suggest that haulage-related jobs are among the most dangerous when considering accidents experienced by all workers in the metal and nonmetal surface mining work force.

The Hidden Secret ore body is located within the Mt Charlotte underground mining system in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Mineralisation of the Hidden Secret ore body is lode style and therefore differs from the typical economical mineralisation mined at Mt Charlotte and consequently demanded a novel approach to the mining methodology. The ore body is lens like in shape, extending 200m along strike, 210m vertically, and dipping at 55 degrees. The lode width varies from 1.5m at the extremities to over 22m in the central zone of the ore body. Average grade is 3.4 Au grams per tonne. The initial mining methodology was Modified Avoca utilising Longhole Open Stoping with pillars, in a bottom up stoping sequence. However, as Hidden Secret became better defined and wider than initially modelled, it was identified that a high portion of gold would remain in the pillars and other mining concerns emerged such as remote backfilling large open voids and potentially unsafe vertical standoff distances between levels and wide open stopes. A re-evaluation of this method was undertaken and a new approach adapting a variation of Avoca methodology was identified to remove the rib pillars and replace them with a sill pillar separating the 4 levels into 2 distinct blocks. This new approach provided an immediate advantage by removing the bogger backfilling activity from the same level of the active stope front, enabling stope drilling and prepping to occur during the backfilling cycle. Bogging productivity has also improved as the fired ore is funnelled to the draw point by the backfill rill, significantly reducing the requirement for remote bogging thus improving bogging productivity. This mining method is currently in progress in the first of the two mining blocks and is on track to realise the targeted recovery of 7,700 ounces from the rib pillars.

"A shored enclosure was required to access a control structure upstream below the dam of a deep lake. The shoring involves the interaction of the structure, soil, and water and the loads imposed include the hydrostatic forces of the water, soil pressures as well as dynamic forces due to currents and waves. Deep excavation support systems have traditionally been designed using classical methods that involve direct computations of earth pressures. However, traditional analysis does not take into account soil-structure interaction. Numerical modelling offers better means to analyze soil-structure interaction. This paper presents a 2D finite element (2D-FE) analysis of a deep excavation support structure that was required to remove and replace a control structure at the upstream toe of a dam. The sheet-piling shoring was designed to withstand the lateral pressures from 14 m deep free water and 5.5 m deep excavation below the free water to reach the required excavation level to replace the gate structure. Elastic-plastic analyses were performed to predict the stresses and deformations of the complicated shoring structure and excavation bottom. The soil parameters, procedures used to develop the 2D-FE model, and the results are discussed in this paper. The shoring system is currently under construction.INTRODUCTIONA deep shoring system enclosure is required to keep out water and soil and to provide a support for unbalanced loadings due to dewatering and/or, excavation in order to permit construction of the permanent structures in the dry. A braced shoring system consists of a single wall sheet piling which is driven into the ground to form a “box” around the excavation site and is braced on the inside. After bracing the sheet piling, seal concrete is placed into the bottom to prevent water from seeping into the open excavation from underneath the sheet piling, and the water is pumped out to provide the dry work area. The braced shoring involves the interaction of the structure, soil, and water and the loads imposed include the hydrostatic forces of the water, soil pressures as well as dynamic forces due to currents and waves. Deep excavation support systems have traditionally been designed using classical methods that involve direct computations of earth pressures, (active, passive, or apparent pressures). There have been some uncertainties regarding the actual distribution of earth pressures due to influence of the support wall flexibility, as these traditional methods do not take into account soil-structure interaction. Numerical modelling offers better means to analyze soilstructure interaction."

Close economic cooperation was established among the countries in western Europe during the seventies. As a consequence, among others, a need for harmonized technical specifications for civil engineering works arose. Technical specifications for design and execution of building and civil engineering structures exist in most of the European countries. In some countries such technical specifications are part of the building regulations and in other they are independent codes of practice and standards. The works on the Eurocodes was initiated by the Commission of the European Communities about 1976. The Eurocodes are intended as common unified design codes for different load bearing structures constructed from different materials. They are also intended to cover design of geotechnical structures. They are established with a view to promote the free movement of goods and services within the member states of the European Community - the so called Internal Market - and within the member countries of the European Free Trade Association, EFTA by removing obstacles arising from different rules for calculation and design.

The separation of certain minerals by electrostatic techniques can be difficult due to their similar electrical conductivity, and any technique to improve this can be useful in certain difficult separation applications. Triboelectric differences between mineral scan result in certain minerals acquiring small positive or negative charges prior to inductive electrostatic separation. By changing the polarity of inductive separation, relative changes in mineral recovery can be observed, which may be beneficial. In this brief study a JKTech mineral liberation analyser (MLA) was used to evaluate the effect of polarity change on selected minerals present in the Richards Bay Minerals deposit, and an approximate triboelectric series based on this behaviour is presented.

Hydrometallurgical operations and many processes in the chemical industry require the separation of dissolved material from solids. One of the decisions which has to be made in designing a plant for such an operation is how this separation shall be accomplished. It is the purpose of this paper to set forth the general principles involved in such separations in order that the optimum flowsheet and equipment may be selected. Countercurrent Decantation with thickeners, or C.C.D. as it is generally known, is, of course, only one way of separating dissolved material from undis-solved. Other unit operations such as Countercurrent Filtration (C.C.F.) and Countercurrent Classification (C.C.C.) are widely used. The same principles may also be applied to centrifugally assisted decantation, as with nozzle or solid bowl type centrifugals, and to separations using screens, either gravity or centrifugal type. Another form of countercurrent washing applicable to granular materials is practiced in continuous ion exchange operations. All of these operations depend on two basic principles, or combinations of these principles. In C.C.D. type operations the solids are concentrated into the smallest possible volume of liquor in each step and the resulting pulp then mixed with a more dilute liquor and recon cen trated, the liquors separated from the more dilute stages being advanced to dilute the more concentrated liquor in a previous solids concentrate, as is shown in Fig. I. This will be termed the solids concentration-solution dilution principle, or, for short, solution dilution. countercurrent decantation- type circuits. The second principle used in washing solubles from solids is that of solids concentration-solution displacement. Here the solids are restrained from movement while wash solution is forced through the interstices in a counter-current fashion, as in Fig. 2. In the simplest application of this principle, once the "cake" has been formed, it is not disturbed until the operation is completed. In continuous filters, the cake is merely moved under the successive washes and the displaced filtrates removed as in Fig. 4. Often, however, after one or two displacement washes, a repulping step is introduced, the cake reformed and washed again. This procedure brings the solution dilution principle into play as well as the solution displacement principle. The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user's computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

"This paper outlines the development and inplementation of functional training at the Thompson Mine of Inco Metals Company, Manitoba Division. This training is an extension of similar methods implemented throughout the company to meet safety and health and productivity objectives. It consists of the orientation to the mine, induction in the basic mining skills, and specific training in drilling and other skills in the mine. Initial results indicated a positive effect on the safety performance and proficiency of the mine workforce.IntroductionThe primary mining method at the Thompson Mine is mechanized cut and fill, with secondary recovery of pillars by undercut and fill . These methods require a workforce of about 900 hourly operating employees to obtain capacity production of 6500 tons of ore per day.Historically, turnover of mine employees has been high and large numbers of new recruits are introduced to the mine every year. These men are recruited primarily in Manitoba, but also from distant areas of Canada; most of the se people have no previous mining experience.Training has always been an important component of mine operations. Mine supervisors and experienced miners have committed an appreciable amount of time and effort to training these new recruits. As well, training efforts have been directed toward upgrading the skills of experienced workers.Recently, a growing awareness of the significance of this training effort and its impact on accident frequency, productivity, turnover and other important parameters of the mine operation has led to a review of training methods. The training program described in this paper has resulted from this review."

Overexposure to hazardous noise has been found in most mining sectors, with up to 100% of the surveyed workforce experiencing a noise dose that exceeds the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure level (PEL). As a result, miners show elevated rates of hearing impairment of 70-90% by retirement age. To help manage noise exposures, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software and implementation guide for use by mine management and safety personnel. This paper describes the development, functions and basic operation of the initial-release version of DOSES. A revised version is being developed to incorporate additional user-suggested functions, and its development and implementation to assess noise control solutions will be described in a future article. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker’s daily activities. Observations about the worker’s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with the start and end time, to determine the duration of the tasks so they can later be matched up with the noise data. The software gives the user the option of assessing dose relative to the MSHA PEL, the action level or the NIOSH recommended exposure limit. The software generates a variety of interactive on-screen displays showing where, when and how the worker’s noise dose accumulated. It also can generate customizable printed reports. These outputs can be used to highlight the tasks, locations and times that are associated with the greatest amount of a worker’s noise exposure. DOSES simplifies and streamlines the record keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, so mine management can make engineering noise control or administrative control decisions to limit the noise overexposure of their workers.

The combination of Stage 1 Geoinformatics legacy data intervention processes with the Stage 2 ultra-detailed airborne geophysical prospecting demonstrates a new approach to converting data to information to knowledge, and converting that knowledge into exploration results.   The Coromandel region of the North Island of New Zealand has long been know to host gold deposits of economic viability (Hauraki Gold Fields). To the SE of this area lies the Taupo Volcanic Region (TVR) where the geology and structural setting mirror the Hauraki Gold Fields, however mineral exploration in the past has been hindered by the blanketing volcanic ash deposits. Glass Earth Limited recognised that this whole potential epithermal gold province could be effectively explored utilising rapid, risk orientated processing to review legacy geoscience data: The Geoinformatics Data Intervention Process; which in turn directed ultra detailed airborne geophysical surveys over the TVR. Results have outlined 21 new drillable potential epithermal gold targets; and a plethora of other targets with high prospectivity.

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

HISTORY AND LOCATION SEAL HARBOR GOLD MINES, LIMITED, was incorporated in January, 1934, to take over 116 acres of mining lands in the Stormont gold district, Guysboro county, Nova Scotia. The nearby ten-stamp Mulgrave mill was also purchased, and since that time 974 acres of adjoining properties have been secured from the Government by direct lease. The property is served by a motor road and is about two miles from the village of Goldboro, situated on the shore of Isaac's harbour. The bulk of ?the supplies are brought in by coastal steamer from Halifax, a distance of about 100 miles, since the nearest railway connections are at Antigonish, some 40 miles distant. EARLYY WORK The Seal Harbor properties include the old Partington and Beaver Hat mines. A small tonnage of ore was mined from each and treated on the properties in stamp mills, which were later torn. down . A survey of old records shows that this ore averaged about $8.00 gold per ton. Development work by the present Company was confined to the 100-foot level until February, 1935, but after that rime the incline shaft was deepened to 425 feet and the 300-foot level was explored east and west of the shaft. Six belts of ore were intersected to the west of the shaft. The ore from these belts was hand sorted and the ore portion was put through the 10-stamp Mulgrave mill to defray operating expenses and to serve as a sample of the deposits. The average recovery per ton from this sorted ore was $6.10. Samples of the ore were sent to the testing laboratories of the Mines Branch, at Ottawa, and of Canadian Industries, Limited, at Toronto. Recommendations from both of these authorities were for removal of the coarse gold by concentration and barrel amalgamation, followed by cyanidation of the residue.

One of the most common critical areas of longwall mining in terms of ground stability are the gateroad and bleeder entries. These critical entries provide much-needed safe access for miners and allow for adequate ventilation required for dilution of hazardous airborne contaminants and must remain open during mining of a multi-panel district. This paper focuses on the stability of the longwall entries subjected to a single abutment load such as bleeders, first tailgate, and last headgate. First tailgate and last headgate are also referred to as blind headgates and tailgates. A study of a longwall district through conditions mapping, support evaluations, and numerical modeling was conducted and evaluated by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The condition mapping and support evaluations were performed on entries that spanned the previous five years of mining and relied on a diverse selection of supports to maintain the functionality of the entry. Numerical modeling was also conducted to evaluate various support types with further investigation and comparison to the condition mapping. The study demonstrated the importance of the abutment load decay versus distance from the gob edge, the potential for a reduction in material handling related injuries, as well as optimal usage of secondary and standing support.

Titanium is not yet being produced on a commercial scale despite the facts that it has some impressive properties, and that it occurs very abundantly in easily-mined, highgrade oxide ores. One important reason for this is that the excellent mechanical properties of the metal were not widely recognised and appreciated until about twenty years ago.Another factor which has tended to retard progress in titanium metallurgy has been the realization that the oxide minerals of titanium are very stable; in other words, considerable energy has to be expended to reduce the oxide to metal. Table 1 presents the minimum energies which would have to be expended to produce one ton of each of the metals, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and iron from their respective oxides under theoretically ideal conditions at normal temperature and pressure. At higher temperatures, the minimum energy requirements are different, but the values for the various metals still fall in the same order as indicated in Table 1.In actual fact, the energy consumption in the case of any particular metal is higher than the ideal value by an amount which can be determined only by' the results of plant practice. In underground mining and tunneling, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Australian companies WDS Limited and Cram Fluid Power, the engineering department of J.H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture roof bolting modules to be mounted off both sides of a roadheader, providing in-cycle bolting. The objective was to produce a boom and bolt module that would allow an operator to bolt from a remote location, eliminating the need for miner to work in unsupported ground. The bolt module needed to operate in front of the cutting boom, but retract to a parked position out of the way during the cutting cycle. Due to Australian electrical approval requirements, it was desirable to design the module with minimal use of electrical controls. The need for multiple, complex, drill steel and bolt handling steps led to the need for a custom hydraulics package to automate several of the movements. The result of the design is dual drill and bolt modules mounted to a multistage boom with over 24 feet (7.31 m) of extension. Each unit rotates and tilts to meet the bolt pattern requirements in conjunction with the stow and load requirements. The bolt module builds on previous designs incorporating a modular assembly with each sub-component designed to be replaceable and adjustable independently from other machine components. Each major component is painted a different color to help the operator make the connection visually from the module to the operator?s control valves. Hydraulic package valves were designed to automatically control several of the sub-components during the drill cycle, reducing the number of steps a drill operator would, otherwise, have to do manually. This design removes the operator from working in unsupported roof and away from other inherent hazards, putting them at a safe distance on the operator?s platform. The cutting and bolting equipment has been combined into one machine, which is advantageous in single entry drifts because there is no need to place change equipment. The hydraulic package valves eliminate the need for any electronics, thus avoiding any electrical regulations with respect to the controls. The addition of these modules to the roadheading machine increases miner safety and streamlines production while meeting the ground control support requirements.

A flowsheet is being developed for processing Thompson ultramafic low-grade nickel ores. This type of ore is characterized by high content of serpentinized magnesium silicates which generate slimes during comminution. Flotation of this type of ore proves difficult due to problems associated with the slimes. The flowsheet, based on extensive laboratory and miniplant flotation tests, consists of two key components: desliming by hydrocyclones prior to flotation and using soda ash for pH control in flotation. Satisfactory metallurgical results have consistently been achieved in laboratory full circuit simulation and miniplant tests.
