Zimplats? operations currently consist of the Ngezi Platinum Mine, which is a 1.5 Mt/a open-cast and 0.7 Mt/a underground mine, and a Concentrator and Smelter to which ore is transported 80 km by road. The final converter matte product is transported to Impala Refining Services in South Africa for refining and marketing. The Zimplats Smelter operations consist of a concentrate filtration plant, a Drytech flash dryer, a modified Elkem / Hatch 13.5 MVA circular furnace, two 10? x 15? Peirce-Smith converters, and a matte granulation plant. The Zimplats smelter uses a three-field electrostatic precipitator, supplied by ELB-Brandt, for removal of particulates in the gas streams from both the converter and furnace. Construction of the smelter commenced in 1995, under the BHP / Delta Gold of Australia joint venture. The furnace was lined mid-1996, and smelting operations commenced in 1997. Due to design challenges, the Elkem furnace was modified by Hatch in 1998, and the smelter had not reached full capacity when operations were suspended in 1999. Re-commissioning took place in January 2002.

This project is exploring the potential for developing trees tolerable to degraded un-reclaimed mine site soils and tailings as a solution to re-establishing long-term tree growth on those sites. The project incorporates growing tree seedlings in an underground greenhouse grown from seeds planted in the degraded mine soils in which they will eventually be planted. The outcome of the project is expected to lead to a successful solution for re-establishing tree growth in soils and tailings containing high metal concentrations with minimal post-planting human intervention. The research is being conducted in an underground greenhouse located 100 ft below the surface in the old Orphan Boy Mine Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC) located on Montana Tech’s campus in Butte, Montana.

In the past 15 years the enforced improvement of the public traffic systems caused a boom in urban tunnel construction. In 1961 the City of Paris started to build the Express-Metro. Of the 47 km long double-track line crossing the city center, nearly 45 km are in operation since 1971. Still missing is here only an about 2.6 km long connecting stretch, which is under construction now. From 1963 to 1969 the 21.8 km long Victoria Line was built in London as extension of the existing network,. A little later, in the years 1965 to 1973, the City of Hamburg supplemented its subway network by the construction of a 16.8 km long line between the Boroughs of Billstedt and Stellingen. Also in 1965 the City o Munich started to build a subway system of 54 km f length. Thereof a stretch of 16.2 km could be taken into operation in 1972 shortly before the Olympic Games. These are only some of the better known projectsas examples of the activities in European cities. In nearly all cities with more than about ½ million inhabitants subsurface traffic lines were begun or supplemented. Furthermore, numerous undercuts or other subsurface structures were built. The Ij Tunnel in Amsterdam and the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg may be mentioned, both structures finding international attention.

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. "Mining is the main activity that supports civilization. Actual mining presents contradictory concept to the health of the planet. Its business model is linear, fragmented and characterized by inefficiencies in the utilization of water, energy and mineral resources which generate waste and pollution. Before mining begins, it is critical to determine the vulnerability of the ecosystem and after mining, it is critical to determine the depletion of nature. Attending to these vital matters will require quantifying and measuring them. The purpose of this study is to provide and establish the metric to assess the performance and manage a sustainable future for our existence and that of our planet. This index is defined to measure and control Nature Friendly Sustainability (NFS) based on understanding nature. This index will determine the condition of nature constructed on the measurement of physical, chemical and biological equilibrium. Proposing a new mindset for mining design to satisfy nature’s needs would be to offer the same opportunities to future generations. Hence, sustainability is synonymous with equilibrium under a limited ecosystem. Nature is interconnected. Finally, this index of NFS is readable, standardized and relevant to keep nature’s needs in equilibrium. Establishing and NFS index is the next metric for humanity. INTRODUCTION There are a multitude of definitions of what sustainability is. Most of them are defined in terms of the corporate entity from which they emanate. The classical definition of management states that, “if we do not measure it, we cannot manage it.” Management of ecosystems is the definition of sustainability. Indicators of quantity and quality of sustainability are vital in order to create a metric for sustainability. These indicators will measure the depletion and degradation of nature as they occur through human intervention. The first step is to create a metric of sustainability to simplify its definition. The definition of sustainability is based on whether or not you consider nature to be finite or infinite, which is described in Nature Friendly Sustainability (NFS) [1]. The definition of NFS applies to any anthropogenic activity with an understanding of the equivalent activity in nature. That is to say, human activity with nature requires balance and equilibrium in order to be sustainable. The importance of this equilibrium is quantified in a set of metrics in order to establish measurement and acknowledge indicators for our dependence on nature. Sustainability is synonymous with equilibrium in any ecosystem that is limited and fragile. In the graph is the explanation of sustainability definition. See Graph 1"

As shown in former publications there are problems in load sharing of backstops in multiple drives of conveyors. Therefore, detailed calculation methods and design recommendations are required. In this paper various designs of load sharing methods are described and a dynamic torque calculation method will be presented. With this method the loadsharing properties for low and high speed backstops are calculated and compared. These properties depend on the spring characteristic of the drive train between backstop and load. Furthermore, the properties depend on the method of torquearm support and shock absorber configuration. Remarkable differences for external and internal backstops are shown

"GENERAL BACKGROUND/CONTEXT The £300 million Bond Street Station Upgrade project will provide essential congestion relief and step-free access to an important interchange and destination station in the heart of the London Underground network. In 2010 London Underground (LU) let a design & build contract to Costain Laing O’Rourke (CoLOR), with the works to be completed in early 2017. CoLOR’s lead designer is Halcrow-Atkins JV (HAT). The station upgrade works comprise the following principal elements: •,A new satellite ticket hall on the North side of Oxford Street •,Two additional escalators and stairs providing congestion relief to the Jubilee line platforms •,Four lift shafts to provide step-free access between the different levels of the station •,Additional stairs to Central line platform level •,Tunnelled connection to the Crossrail station immediately to the south •,Connecting passageways, including ten connections to existing station tunnels. To achieve this, an existing property at 354-358 Oxford Street has been purchased and demolished, and the basement deepened to make provision for the new ticket hall. From this basement two circular shafts have been sunk, providing construction access for the tunnelled passages and lift and escalator shafts. The tunneling is principally in the London Clay stratum, which is widely recognized as a favorable tunneling medium, although the deepest parts of the works extend into the Lambeth Group strata which consist principally of stiff clays at this level but also contain water-bearing sands. The majority of tunneling has been carried out using mechanical excavation and sprayed concrete linings but other techniques have been used in areas where SCL is not practicable.A key challenge for design and construction of the works has been spatial constraint, in particular due to: •,The existing underground station layout •,The Limits of Deviation for the works •,The small construction site at 354-358 Oxford Street •,Overlaying Third Party assets including Listed buildings, sewers and water mains."

The emerging coal seam gas (CSG) industry has the potential to provide a large-scale energy province for Queensland. Aquifer impacts and management of associated by-product water, both in terms of quantity and quality, are pivotal considerations for the development of a sustainable CSG industry.Legislative changes have been introduced to ensure that the CSG industry manages potential groundwater impacts and beneficial reuse of the by-product water to a level acceptable to both government and the community.The relevant new pieces of legislation covering petroleum and coal seam gas activities include the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004 (P&G Act), Petroleum and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2004 (POLA Act), the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Regulation 2004 and the Petroleum Regulation 2004. Other relevant legislation includes the Petroleum Act 1923 (Petroleum Act) and Part 7AA of the Mineral Resources Act 1989 (Coal Seam Gas Regime). The P&G Act introduces a full regime for managing water rights. This includes provisions for monitoring and reporting on the effects that the taking of underground water under petroleum tenure has on other bores in the area. The P&G Act also imposes a æmake good obligationÆ on petroleum tenure holders, which requires the restoration of bores affected by the taking of water or the payment of compensation. These provisions represent a significant departure from the Petroleum Act, which says very little about water rights and does not specify restrictions on the taking of water under petroleum tenure. This paper attempts to outline the requirements and obligations of the P&G Act for the CSG industry in terms of underground water rights, development impact assessments, aquifer trigger thresholds, monitoring and reporting requirements, as well as the make good obligations.

"Production at the remote Kumtor Gold Mine in Kyrgyzstan commenced on schedule in December 1996.The ore mined during the first few months of 1997 from the upper benches of the pit did not produce the results predicted by the feasibility study. Low metallurgical recoveries experienced at the time were cause for great concern.It soon became clear the recovery difficulties centred around the preg robbing nature of the ore.Procedures were developed to selectively stockpile highly carbonaceous low recovery ore types. Testing methods were developed in the mill to quante the preg robbing activity of the ore. Preg robbing masking agents were added to the process to reduce the preg robbing activity of the ore.The importance of coconut carbon activity relative to the preg robbing activity of the ore was realized. Every aspect of the performance of coconut carbon in circuit was evaluated and optimized to improve carbon activity.Mineralogical analyses were completed defining the deportment of gold in ore and process tailingsBy year end the recovery difficulties had been overcome and plant design production had been achieved. Process improvements continue through 1998."

This report discusses research being done by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Branch und the Applied Physics Branch of the Bureau of Mines to deter-mine the most effective uses of explosives in shooting oil and gas wells, as measured in terms of rates of production from the wells. An experimental investigation of the effects of detonating explosives in shallow holes drilled in rocks, chosen to be similar to those forming oil and gas reservoirs, forms the basis of this study. Records obtained from strain gages placed in the rock around the experimental shots permit determination of the generation and propagation characteristics of the strain wave. Water-injection tests made on the test holes before and after shooting allow the increase in fluid conductivity resulting from the shot to be determined. By rotating these data to the physical properties of the rock, and by conducting shooting experiments over the range of rock types common to oil and gas reservoirs, it is expected that relationships between the fluid conductivity and the properties of the explosive and rock can be developed and used for designing efficient shots for oil and gas wells. Four series of experiment.al tests were completed during the summer of 1949 and are described herein. The results of these tests confirmed the feasibility of the experimental approach and permitted outlining the plans for future research discussed in this report. This report is presented to acquaint industry with this research program and the progress to date, so that the Bureau may have the benefit of suggestions from interested readers.

Thus far virtually the sole theme of the conservationist has been the preservation of natural resources. Little thought has been devoted to the conservation of America's most significant asset-her people. True, considerable effort has been devoted to conserving man's physical strength by the invention and application of labor-saving machinery. Notable progress has been made also in the conservation of man's health through important discoveries in medicine. However, little if any positive success has been achieved in the conservation of the most valuable attributes of man-intellect, skills, manpower. Human resources are interrelated and interdependent. There is no monopoly on knowledge or skills' or human energy. No one must sell them short. All the knowledge and all the skills and all the energy possessed by all men are required to render all the services needed by all men. One of the major sources of wasted manpower is found in the nation's schools, with an educational system based on the outmoded theory of uniform education for all. Olympic Dam is a world-class deposit and is unquestionably one of the most geologically, structurally and texturally complex orebodies in the world. As development advances into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the geological understanding is rapidly evolving as underground drill rigs are prioritised to provide the additional data necessary to convert Indicated and Inferred Resources into Measured Resources. The SMA represents approximately 70 per cent of Olympic Dam’s total resource and is significantly more complex when compared to the Northern Mine Area with respect to the diverse nature and origin of lithotypes, rock mass characteristics and the extent of major structures controlling primary mineralisation trends.Recent mine development into the central SMA has been impacted by a major structural gouge zone. Sound geological interpretation allowed mine geologists to successfully integrate their local understanding of the distribution of lithotypes with critical geotechnical data, chiefly rock quality designation (RQD), to delineate and better predict this major structural gouge zone. As a direct result, development rates improved whilst also increasing awareness for the importance of sound geological interpretation utilising all available data. In order to maximise predictability across all systems in place through the mining geology value chain, the integration of geological and geotechnical data in a geotechnical RQD block model provides an additional tool to assist in preventative solutions for complex problems to achieve a proactive mining environment.This paper details the methods used to build the RQD block model, the geostatistical estimation parameters, 3D geotechnical domain wireframes, challenges regarding legacy approaches, and collection of geotechnical information and incorporating/linking geotechnical data with geological features, including the use of grade and lithotype domains. Although the geotechnical block model proved difficult and complex to construct, the resultant product has seen successful integration of geological and geotechnical data into mine planning providing higher resolution of critical parameters for local mining areas.CITATION:Clark, J M, Passmore, M and Poznik, N, 2017. "Large-diameter ball mills have traditionally used steel liners—steel being a highly durable material that can be shaped into any desired geometry, among which the double-wave has been the preferred design. Such a design produces a purely cascading charge motion, which is ideal for the shearing action needed to produce a finer product. Today, however, rubber liners, which have been in existence for over forty years, are now preferred over traditional steel, largely because they weigh less and are easier to maintain. In this paper, we show the operating data from the Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia Mine, wherein the liners on a 26-by-40-foot mill were changed from conventional steel liners to PolyStl™ liners. It is then shown that this change reduced the amount of energy consumed whilst being able to maintain previous grind and throughput levels. The design is verified via discrete element simulations.IntroductionThe Constancia Mine (“Our Business: Peru,” 2016) is located in the southeastern Andes of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. It can be accessed via the CU-126 road, about 95 km from the town of Espinar in Espinar Province. The mine also contains both the Constancia and Pampacancha deposits in the Province of Chumbivilcas. Hudbay Minerals, Inc. acquired the mine in 2011, through the purchase of Norsemont Mining, Inc. and currently retains sole ownership of the property. Production of the Constancia Mine began in 2014, with commercial production levels being achieved in April 2015.The Constancia and Pampacancha deposits primarily include hypogene, supergene, and skarn ores. The Mine’s main products, however, are copper concentrate, with silver contents, and molybdenum concentrate. These mineral reserves are expected to last approximately 22 years. Constancia’s open-pit mine supplies a processing plant that is designed for 81,900 metric tons per day of throughput. Average annual copper production is estimated to be 82,000 mT (contained metal in concentrate). Actual plant production can be found in Table 1."

In the province of Alberta the coal measures dip at so many different angles, between the horizontal and the vertical, that many different systems of haulage are in use. I will, however, only touch briefly upon the general -systems in use, and devote the major portion of this paper to a discussion of endless-rope haulage and its adaptibility to various conditions in coal mines; dealing in particular with the endless-rope haulage that was installed at Brule during the month of August 1923. In coal seams that are approximately level, and newly opened, hand-putting or tramming from the face is the cheapest, but when the mine is further developed tramming is out of the question, and the use of ponies is the next consideration. The time arrives, however, when mining reaches a point where the economical haulage of coal by horses cannot be done profitably, and then some system of mechanical haulage must be installed. The installation of any system should be carefully considered before any particular type of haulage is adopted, because a great deal depends upon the grade or dip of the seam. Motor haulage is impossible to operate profitably on a grade of over 6 per cent and, while it is possible to use ponies, on short runs, up to 9 per cent, some other means of main and secondary haulage must be installed when a 9 per cent grade, is exceeded. I will, therefore, deal first with secondary haulage, because even though a main haulage is established, secondary haulage can be used to feed the main haulage.

Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

Quarry accidents in 1963 caused 61 fatal and 3,468 nonfatal injuries which occurred at respective frequency rates of 0.31 and 17.91 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality record in 1963 was better than in 1962 but was appreciably worse than in 1.961. For nonfatal injuries, the 1963 record was slightly worse than in 1962 but was better than in 1961. The injury--severity rate of 2,913 days lost or charged per million man-hours in 1963 was better than that of 3,046 in 1962, the first year for which such data became available. The average severity of all injuries in 1963 was 160 days lost or charged per injury, 15 less than in 1962. An average of 91,960 men were at work on active days in 1963 and these men had an aggregate worktime of 193.7 million man-hours during the year.

In an effort to further attempt to understand the function of these devices, field and laboratory research conducted with various stemming devices was performed to enhance existing data sets and analyze otherphenomena that occur when these products are used.

Deep-sea mineral SMS deposits present some of the world’s most challenging conditions for drilling equipment. As robotic seabed drilling services mature so too the ways that clients engage with service providers to maximise their data requirements. This presentation reviews key considerations for planning and executing a successful seabeddrilling program in variable mineralised deposits. Some of the means of collaboration between robotic seabed drilling contractors and those hiring their services are explored; where improved efficiencies and recoveries over the period of a drilling programme could be achieved. Potentially new technology or methodology can be looked at to further improve these approaches.

The contractor examined L.T. White's Patent No. 3524680 and, finding it in need of engineering refinements, proceeded with a conceptual design of a variable wall mining machine. The contractor then proceeded to assess the feasibility of the variable wall mining machine measured against the criteria specified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The feasibility was judged from a physical aspect, a health and safety aspect, and an economic aspect. The Variable Wall Mining Machine was judged to be feasible on all three aspects provided that certain specified practices were adopted. Description The specifications and design and performance parameters of the Variable Wall Mining System as conceptualized are summarized in Tables I and II. The system consists of a side-cutting auger operating in a string of identical 12 ft. sections, along a 500 ft. retreating longwall face. In addition to the 41 identical sections, there is a special drive and discharge section at the head gate.

A general discussion of the structure of the junk automobile recycling system shows that the generation of stripped automobile hulks and scrapped automobiles is price inelastic. As a result, it is extremely difficult for the price mechanism to automatically achieve an equilibrium that will prevent the accumulation of excessive automobile wrecker inventories and vehicle abandonment by the last owners of scrapped cars. The new shredder processing technology and the new portable flattener technology have altered the structure of the junk automobile recycling system. The shredder technology has increased the demand for processed automobile scrap. This increased demand is reflected in higher prices paid for hulks by scrap processors. The portable flattener has reduced the transportation cost of shipping hulks to processors. The two new technologies have eliminated, at least potentially, the net cost of shipping stripped hulks so frequently incurred by wreckers in the past. The elimination of this cost eliminates the economic incentive for excessive wrecker inventories. Unfortunately, the incentive for last owners to abandon their cars does not appear to have been eliminated by the new technologies. The last owner of an automobile with no spare parts value is still likely to incur a cost by delivering his automobile to the recycling system. Although a subsidy payment is probably unnecessary to reduce excessive wrecker inventories, such a payment might be one solution to the problem of automobile abandonment. However, there are a wide variety of subsidy programs that could be introduced. Before any Federal subsidy program is introduced to reduce automobile abandonment, it is recommended that the program be tested on a limited basis in many different parts of the country.
