Hudson River Pier 86, home of the historic USS Intrepid Aircraft Carrier and the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, is currently undergoing a $30M reconstruction. This project involves the demolition of the old timber pile supported pier and construction of a new 150 ft wide by 782 ft long concrete pier, built over the footprint of the old piles. The new pier consists of steel pipe piles, precast concrete pile caps, and a composite deck, made up of precast, prestressed concrete planks and cast-in-place concrete topping. This paper focuses on both the structural design and construction of the new pier, with emphasis on the pile foundation. Pier 86 is unique in that it is required to resist the extremely high lateral loads imposed on it by the permanently moored 898 ft long aircraft carrier during severe storms. A total of 360 steel pipe piles support the new pier. These piles, which are 24 in. in diameter and range in length from 58 ft to 175 ft, were driven down to bedrock. The piles, each having 200 ton allowable capacities, work together to resist the significantly large lateral loads exerted on the pier by the ship. The installation of the piles was unique in that all the piles, including the ?super-longs?, were fabricated to-length offsite, delivered to the site via truck and barge, and installed in one piece, eliminating the need for field splicing. The Pier 86 reconstruction will be completed within an extremely aggressive 18 month schedule, from January 2007 through June 2008. The refurbished aircraft carrier Intrepid will return home in September 2008, and the grand re-opening of the pier will be on Veteran?s Day 2008. This paper provides a case history for owners, government agencies, engineers, and construction professionals that will be faced with the challenges of designing and building new piers.

The phase-boundary pressure required to maintain a natural hydrocarbon fluid in a single phase must be considered in planning the recovery of reservoir liquids by miscible-phase processes. The change in the phase-boundary pressure at reservoir temperature that results when a light component or a mixture of light components is added to a reservoir fluid is an especially important consideration. The cricondenbar pressure (maximum phase-boundary pressure) and the critical pressure are unique correlated pressures that have been utilized to calculate the change in phase-boundary pressure that may result when the composition of a reservoir liquid is altered by an additive. In this study one reservoir oil and three gas-condensate fluids are used as examples. Correlations pertaining to the critical and cricondenbar states in chapters 4 and 5 of Bureau of Mines Monograph 10 (3)5 were used to demonstrate how butane and lighter components added to these reservoir fluids affect their phase-boundary pressures.

Cappelen Smith, at a dinner held in the Hotel Commodore, New York, on Nov.' 10, 1920. Prof. Waldemar Lindgren, president of the society, in giving the medal, said: "By the advancement of the science of hydrometallurgy, by the construction of plants on a scale audacious in their conception, by the successful overcoming of all sorts of difficulties, you have placed your name among those who occupy the very front rank among the hydrometallurgists. In recognition of this distinguished contribution to the science of metallurgy, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America now awards you its gold medal."

Minerals are certainly where they are found. The undemocratic distribution of the world's mineral wealth has created an incongruous inbalance: mineral-rich, scarcely populated countries supply highly-populated industrialised countries that in turn consume more minerals than they produce. This has been as much a generating force for colonisation, invasion, and war as religion, political ideals, or megalomania. The Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth century was born in Britain, a country with large domestic resources of coal, iron, lead, zinc, copper, tin, etc., as well as a large population. As consumption outstripped production imports filled the gap, particularly from its worldwide colonies. For example, when Canada was founded in 1867 more than 905 of its investments were British financed, and much of these were mineral-based. The British made similar investments in South East Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, as did the other industrialised Western European countries hungry for raw materials. Later the United States emerged as a leading industrial power, again due largely to its abundant natural resources. Consumption soon exceeded production and foreign sources were saught. American business went exploring abroad ant many a mineral resource was developed almost totally on the basis of the US market many .thousands of miles away. Closer to home, Canada was also an obvious target for the US with its rich mineral resource base, small population, and geographical juxtaposition, so much so that about the time of the 1914-18 War the US took over from Britain as the major investor in Canada, and this peaked in 1967 when the US accounted for 80% of the country's foreign investment. After the 1939-45 War Japan joined the ranks of the USA and Western Europe as industrialised powers, and they too searched the world for the deposits lacking in their homeland.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating possible applications of acoustic energy at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies in petroleum production. A phase of this work involves measuring sound velocity through petroleum reservoir rocks. References and abstracts were prepared as a bibliography to make available to others some of the material obtained from a literature search covering the past applications and the present uses of sound. Laboratory and theoretical studies of the various parameters that influence the velocity of sound in porous media account for the wealth of information now available. Velocity of propagation of sound waves in porous sediments as a function of depth is a quantity frequently measured. Velocity logging systems, capable of measuring speed of sound waves in underground formations penetrated by wells, have been developed for interpretative studies. The close relation between acoustic velocity and porosity makes it possible to determine porosity from velocity logs. Most velocity log interpretation in terms of porosity is based on a formula developed by Wyllie and others known as the time-average relation.

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pinpoint the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable temperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity. Hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples; reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis; and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimization and troubleshooting. In addition, these catalyst management tools will give continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed, providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking operating data, temperature optimization and good record keeping.

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. Un modèle de démélange linéaire, appliqué pour estimer les minéraux dans le spectre des échantillons de poudres mixtes, indique que ce modèle a atteint une valeur R2 de 0,88. The Boston Marine Industrial Park (BMIP) VENT 6 project is a cut and cover tunnel, part of the Central Artery / Tunnel (CA/T) in the city of Boston. The BMIP job will serve as the south approach to the Third Harbor Tunnel crossing. The alignment is approximately 2500 Ft long and is made up of four sections starting from west to east: 1. West Tunnel 2. Boat Section 3. East Tunnel 4. Tunnel inside Vent 6 Cofferdam and connection to the Third Harbor Tunnel. The support of excavation (SOE) system for the West Tunnel, Boat Section, and East Tunnel are all a part of this project whereas the SOE for Tunnel inside the Vent 6 Cofferdam was a part of the contract for the Third Harbor Tunnel.

Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. High-grade hematite ores in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia are associated with hydrothermal magnetite-apatite and magnetite-hematite-carbonate-apatite proto ores below the modern weathering surface. In addition, hydrothermal alteration of country rocks, once believed to be absent, is now recognised widely in shales and dolerites up to several hundreds of metres away from the ores. Both observations appear to exclude a simple supergene model for ugrading the host iron formations to high-grade hematite ore. Similar hydrothermal proto ores and country rock alteration are now being recognised in other high-grade hematite deposits worldwide, or have been recognised in the past.

Critical to understanding and controlling phase mixing and separation in metallurgical processes, is the development of reliable experimental techniques to measure interfacial properties of melt systems. A series of experiments has been carried out to determine the effect of oxygen potential on the surface tension of liquid copper. Using an electromagnetic levitation method, a surface tension-oxygen chemical potential adsorption isotherm was produced for the Cu-O system at T 1400 K. The surface tension results show good agreement with the literature values e.g. within 3 per cent for pure copper. The Belton `ideal' adsorption isotherm was applied, and the following equation derived to best fit the experimental data ? =1251-77.5 1n41+ (2.79x105 . pO1/2)](mN.m Using this equation, the surface tension of copper was calculated/predicted as a function of oxygen potential at 1400 K, and showed excellent agreement with the experimental values. This confirmed that the adsorption behaviour of oxygen in liquid copper is ideal. The saturation coverage of oxygen on the surface of liquid copper was determined to be T0 = 6.65 µmoles.m,-2 corresponding to an area per adsorbed oxygen atom of ao ? 25 Å2. These values agree well with those cited in the literature, and our experimental data cover a very wide range of oxygen potential (10-5 to 10-17 atm). "What is the primary responsibility of geo-engineers in mining? Early in my career, I was asked this question by an experienced engineer. After explaining some various tasks, I was informed that the main responsibility was to monitor. Although this proved true for many cases, I came to understand that monitoring is merely one means to achieve the primary responsibility of a geo-engineer — ensure the safety of all personnel. The potential for groundwater to impact stability allows this responsibility to be shared with hydrogeologists as well. Inherently, we monitor to identify risks; we analyze designs and develop models to mitigate risks; and we are provided opportunities to explain to supervisors the geo-risks to personnel and mine plans that will result from particular courses of action. A couple years ago, I took an opportunity to share experiences from the first several years of my career as a geotechnical engineer with junior geoengineering staff within my company. The intent was to share situations that were a part of my development, so they could learn and understand their responsibility to the safety of all personnel. Similarly, the purpose of this article will be to share these thoughts with new geo-engineers in the industry in order to help prepare them for the challenges they will face.What is our purpose?A senior hydrogeologist shared an experience that occurred in their career. The experienced hydrogeologist had spent some time with the hydrogeology staff, most of them relatively new to the mining industry, to understand how they viewed, and carried out, what they perceived as their responsibility at an active mining operation. After a couple months of observing and mentoring, the senior hydrogeologist met with everyone and posed the question “What is our purpose?” I am sure that most junior geo-engineers would start explaining different tasks or projects that they must complete. The list would include monitor ground water levels, track slope movement, evaluate designs, build models, oversee drilling programs, etc. These individuals did as well their supervisor. After going around the room allowing each individual to answer, the experienced hydrogeologist provided them the real answer to the question: Safety. If you examine the root intent of nearly every responsibility geotechnical engineers and hydrogeologists have, it is to apply our professional skills to ensure the safety of our workforce. When the objective of safety from the geotechnical and hydrogeology disciplines is achieved, inherently accomplishing the mine plan should follow suit, or it should significantly minimize the impact by gravity or ground water."

Miners in underground coal mines experience prolonged exposure to high noise levels, often with A-weighted sound levels in excess of 90 dB. Field tests have shown that the continuous miner conveyor is a dominant noise source. This paper will identify the most significant noise-radiating surfaces on the continuous miner tail section using vibration levels and surface areas to estimate the sound power levels of each surface. In addition, using five test cases, this study will examine the effects of three engineering noise controls on the surface-averaged vibration levels and average sound levels measured with four microphones located two meters from the tail section. The noise-radiating surfaces of the conveyor’s tail section include the top and bottom decks, the sideboards, and the flex plates. Emphasis is placed on the changes in the estimated sound power levels in the 500 – 2500 Hz 1/3-octave bands since this frequency range accounts for 80-85% of the sound energy near the tail section. The results show that the bottom deck is the most significant noise radiator for the untreated miner. Installing a coated bottom deck reduces the estimated sound power level radiated from the bottom deck by 11 dB and the average sound level by 2 dB. Using a coated tail roller results in reductions of the estimated sound power levels for individual components from 1 to 4 dBand reduces the average sound level by 2 dB. Coating the slide plate has little effect on both the estimated radiated sound power levels and the average sound level. The test results indicate that modifications that reduce flex plate vibration and reduce energy transfer from the tail roller into the tail section will be effective in reducing noise when combined with a coated tail roller and coated return deck.

Atlas Copco Construction and Mining Australia identified a number of issues in regard to the skill levels, labour turnover and productivity of our service technicians. In 1994 we were experiencing a labour turnover rate of 42 per cent per annum amongst our technicians. Exit interviews were held with each individual and one of the major areas of dissatisfaction was the degree of product training provided on our equipment, compared to what is required to be competent across the range of our products. These tradespersons were prepared to accept the reduced remuneration that an OEM offers, for the benefit of comprehensive, professional training that, in theory, could be provided. The truth is that we were achieving approximately 40 per cent of our target for training hours because of the demands of field service, pre-deliveries, etc. So, the summary was the same as the industry was experiencing at that time because of skilled labour shortages, production demands, etc people were employed and thrown in at the deep end. A recipe for failure that will be successful every time.

Waste filling has been employed for many years for supporting the walls of stopes and preventing failure and subsidence of the surrounding and overlying rock formations, and its effectiveness for this purpose has long been recognized. It is used for permanent support in ground where timbering (including square-setting) is inadequate for more than temporarily supporting the walls of the excavations. It should be rioted, however, that effective as a good, solid fill may be in resisting heavy side pressure and direct weight, its usefulness for supporting large areas of back and preventing breaking and movement of the overlying rocks is limited. Even the strongest and most uniform rocks will break if the unsupported span becomes too great; and since filling cannot be packed tightly against a horizontal back there is always a possibility of the back breaking and consequent subsidence if the maximum self-supporting span is exceeded. Planes of separation, such as bedding and fault planes, slips, and joints, are common in all rock masses; these may occur above the stoping area where their presence cannot be ascertained by observation. If too much reliance is placed upon filling for the support of a large horizontal area of back (as contrasted to support of vertical or steeply inclined walls) large masses of rock may break along a. plane of weakness, compress the fill, and leave an open space into which caving of the overlying rocks may continue until the space is filled. In this paper the term "waste filling" includes any filling material other than ore - waste mine rock, rock from surface quarries or opencuts, sand and gravel, mill sands, or slags from smelting operations.

Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.
