The Halmahera Contract of Work is a sixth generation contract held 82.5 per cent by Newcrest Mining Limited and 17.5 per cent by PT Aneka Tambang and takes in the Gosowong Project area. In 1991 Newcrest Mining Limited established a small exploration office in Jakarta and proceeded to seek exploration opportunities. The Halmahera area was identified as a substantial prospective ground position in a relatively unexplored area. In late-1991 Newcrest Mining Limited and PT Aneka Tambang agreed to explore in Halmahera. Initial field work commenced in July 1992. A vigorous ground reconnaissance programme led to the discovery of the Gosowong deposit a little over 12 months later in September 1993. In April 1997 the Contract of Work was approved covering much of the island of Halmahera. Between September 1997 and November 1998 activities were directed principally towards obtaining the necessary permits required to commence construction activities. Some particularly ambitious targets were set for achieving this outcome. An aggressive construction programme commenced in late-1998. Construction took place during a period of unseasonally high rainfall, which in itself presented additional challenges to the construction team. A key milestone for the project was achieved on 1 July 1999 when wet commissioning of the process plant commenced. Construction of the Gosowong Mine was achieved on time and within budget. A period of some six years elapsed from the initial discovery of the Gosowong deposit to the time of the first gold pour. Much of the permitting, construction and commissioning activity took place between September 1997 and July 1999. This coincided with a period of significant social, economic and political upheaval in Indonesia. During the construction period a high level of importance was placed on the structured recruitment and training of local people, as well as fostering appropriate community and local business development programmes in the communities nearby the project. Emphasis was also placed on environmental management with detailed long-term planning and progressive rehabilitation commencing during the construction phase. The permitting and subsequent development of the Gosowong Project has demonstrated that even during the difficult times, with commitment, it is possible for mining and exploration companies to conduct business in Indonesia.

"A number of silver producers have identified a need for a system to recover silver and gold from base metal flotation concentrates on site rather than sending the concentrate to third party smelters to improve mine economics. Historically intensive cyanidation has only been used for coarse gold gravity concentrates in batch machines but Gekko have applied the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) to these difficult to leach concentrates.The ILR’s unique ability to operate at various solid to solution ratios, high mass capacity, the ability to handle fines, the use of peroxide to aid silver leach kinetics and simple operation has resulted in significant economic benefits to Hochschild PLC’s Selene and Arcata operations. This paper describes the commissioning phase of the ILR5000BA intensive cyanidation reactors on concentrates from the Selene mine at the Ares Concentrator.INTRODUCTIONIntensive leaching of high grade concentrates in gold ore treatment is now commonplace and is considered an essential feature of most gold circuits (Lane, Fountain and LeBrooy, 2008). The devices commonly used for intensive leaching (InLine Leach Reactor, Acacia Reactor, etc) are specifically designed for the typical coarse nature of the concentrate.In some of these intensive leach applications, significant amounts of silver are co-recovered with the gold. In fact, the intensive leaching conditions of 1 to 2% NaCN in solution and high dissolved oxygen levels, overcome the issue with silver’s slow dissolution rate in traditional CIL/CIP circuits and avoids the formation of insoluble silver sulphide minerals on the surface of the gold (Marsden, 2006).There are a significant number of mine operators producing silver in the form of mixed base metal sulphides flotation concentrates. Typically the mine operators are paid for the silver after processing of the concentrate by the base metal smelter whom recovers the silver during the refining process."

Separation of dolomite from phosphate is the most challenging problem in phosphate mineral processing. Over 50% of the future phosphate reserve in Florida contains too much dolomite to process using the current industry practice. The current phosphoric acid production practice requires less than 1% MgO in the phosphate concentrate as the feed material. The Florida Industrial and Phosphate (FIPR) Institute has collaborated with worldwide experts in the field to address this issue. As a result, the industry is now offered three feasible options. Option 1 offers three methods for reducing MgO content in the concentrate from the Crago process, including adding a dolomite depressant in the rougher flotation step, dolomite flotation of the cleaner concentrate, and scrubbing the cleaner concentrate in quartz sand. These methods could reduce MgO content in the final concentrate by 20–40%. Option 2 involves crushing and grinding of high-dolomite phosphate pebbles followed by dolomite flotation at slightly acidic pH using a new collector that does not require phosphoric acid as a phosphate depressant, achieving a final concentrate analyzing less than 0.9% MgO at about 87% P2O5 recovery. Option 3 is a gravity separation technique using an innovative separation jig, and its full potential remains to be demonstrated.

The definition and shortcomings of traditional cutoff grades are discussed. The concept of optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the Net Present Value (NPV) of annual cash flows coming from a mining project is introduced within the basic framework outlined by K. F. Lane. Several examples are used to demonstrate the shortfalls of cutoff grade policies obtained by various heuristic optimization techniques. An algorithm to obtain an optimum cutoff grade policy which maximizes the NPV of a project is given and described in detail.

Ilmenite smelting furnaces must be operated with a freeze lining of frozen slag to protect sidewall refractories from chemical attack by liquid slag. The process has two main control objectives: Firstly the slag TiO2 content must be controlled according to specification, and secondly a safe freeze lining thickness must be maintained. This text only concerns itself with the second objective. Freeze lining thickness cannot be measured directly due to conditions inside the furnace. It is therefore inferred from signals of thermocouples installed into the furnace sidewall. These signals are used as the 'controlled variables' in the freeze lining thickness control loop. The dynamic characteristics of these signals are the focus of this text. During this study a model of the process was constructed to study interactions between the slag bath and the freeze lining. This model was used to conduct simulation-type experiments to study the influence of various parameters (temperature, slag composition, ilmenite feed rate, reductant feed rate, power input, etc.) on the slag bath, freeze lining, metal bath, furnace wall and other parts of the process. In the case of the furnace wall, the modelling results were first plotted in the form of time-dependent isotherms. The dynamic thermal behavior of the furnace wall became evident from these results. To illustrate the dynamics of sidewall thermocouple signals, the results were also plotted as time lags between events occurring in the slag bath, and the time when a thermocouple registered a temperature change. The events studied included sudden changes in slag bath state (composition and temperature), changes in operating setpoints (ilmenite feed rate, reductant feed rate, power input), and operational errors (complete loss of reductant or of all feed). All of the result sets showed significant lags between occurrences in the slag bath and temperature changes in the refractory wall. The delays are such that it appears impractical to rely on sidewall thermocouple signals for warning of impending damage to the refractory wall, or for purposes of actively controlling freeze lining thickness. Some measures are suggested to improve the usefulness of these signals during furnace operation.

Early laboratory experiments on it American colas dealt with pressures developed in test bomb by explosions of dust clouds and with, the effects of gas in the dust atmosphere.5/ Later, the emphasis shafted to evaluation of the relative fleet flammability and the ignition temperatures of coal dusts.6/ Much worthwhile effort was devoted to the development of Laboratory apparatus and test procedures that gave good correlation with large-scale explosion tests in the Experimental cost mine. The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets. To develop the potential of precast concrete sets as a support medium in underground mines, a three-piece precast concrete drift set was designed for a small opening and tested to destruction in an underground straining frame. Thirty-six tests were made with three sizes of members using three different loading conditions. In addition, 14 members were tested individually in the laboratory. Test results are compared with theoretical calculations. A cost comparison shows the use of concrete sets would be advantageous where conventional wooden timber requires excessive replacement.

"INTRODUCTION The Connellsville mine of the Yolande Coal & Coke Co. is in the southwestern part of Jefferson County, Ala., about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham. The mine is on the Blue Creek bed, which is about 6 feet thick and dips at a angle of 18º. The bed is worked by the room-and-pillar method and is mined by both machine and hand methods. The Blue Creek bed at this point yields a high ash, low-volatile coal with excellent coking properties. Because of its exceptionally low volatile content and high coking strength, this coal is excellent for blending with Alabama coals of higher volatile content and weaker coking properties to form blends suitable for production of metallurgical coke.A sample of washed coal taken during this investigation gave the following analysis on an as received"" basis: Moisture, 8.3 per cent; volatile matter-, 20.2 per cent; ash, 8.0 per cent; fixed carbon, 63.5 per cent. The high ash content of this coal limits the quantity which can be utilized when low-ash coke is required. In the Birmingham district it is usually difficult to sell as coking coal a product that contains more than 8.0 per cent ash. To produce a. coal with this ash content at Connellsville presents a somewhat difficult washing problem. This paper gives the results of an investigation that was conducted by the Southern Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Yolane Coal & Coke Co. for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the coal and the possibility of reducing its ash content on coal-washing tables.The practice at the Connellsville washery at the time of beginning this investigation was to crush the run-of-mine coal to pass a 1 1/2-inch round-hole screen and to treat the satire output on two primary, 3-compartment jigs. A. middling product was recovered from the primary jigs which was re-treated on a single-compartment rougher jig. This system yields a product of acceptable ash content, but the yield is low and the loss of good coal in the refuse is high."

THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

Many of the worldÆs larger iron ore deposits are hosted by rock sequences of Archaean to early Proterozoic age. Most models for the genesis of these deposits are influenced, either directly or indirectly, by the nature of the atmosphere at the time of their formation, and more specifically by the presence or absence of oxygen in the early atmosphere. Since the early-1950s, the geological literature suggests that the Archaean atmosphere was æreducingÆ, and that it may not have contained significant amounts of free oxygen until ca 2 Ga. There are many different definitions of the term æreducingÆ, but the criterion adopted here is whether crustal iron was limited to Fe2+, or whether Fe3+ was also widespread, ie was there scope for redox changes in the state of iron? Significantly, major Australian banded iron formations span this period of inferred atmosphere transition, eg Mt Goldsworthy, Mt Tom Price, Middleback Ranges. Geological evidence for a reducing Archaean atmosphere is both ambiguous and controversial (see review by Phillips, Law and Myers, 2001). Many earlier ideas (eg no Archaean redbeds; all very large iron ore deposits being post-Archaean) have been disproved by dating, whereas other evidence (eg homogeneous detrital gold grains, inferred palaeosols) has not withstood geological scrutiny. The interpretation of some data sets (eg inferred detrital uraninite and pyrite in some Archaean meta-sedimentary rocks) is still controversial. In fact, some lines of evidence now suggest that oxygen was present in the atmosphere well before 2.5 Ga (eg sulfates in the Pilbara craton, carbon distribution in clastic sedimentary rocks). An oxidising Archaean atmosphere has important implications for the development of iron formations. First, the atmosphere is an obvious potential source of oxygen to stabilise ferric iron minerals. Second, reduced fluids in equilibrium with ferrous iron are commonly inferred to transport iron in solution to the depositional site. The redox state of the atmosphere thus provides critical constraints on the solution chemistry of surface waters, effective transport paths for iron and particularly on viable precipitation mechanisms. Iron formations developed from fluids in equilibrium with the atmosphere also have the potential to provide important constraints on the evolution of EarthÆs early atmosphere. If an oxygenated atmosphere is a necessary condition for the development of iron formations, then the Archaean atmosphere must have been oxidising since at least 3.5 Ga. If the redox state of the atmosphere is not a necessary condition, then the time distribution of iron formations cannot be used to provide constraints on atmospheric evolution. Given these uncertainties, models for the genesis of iron ore deposits of Archaean or early Proterozoic age should not rely on a reducing atmosphere in the absence of independent evidence and the alternative of an oxidising atmosphere should also be considered.

INTRODUCTION The goal of any development drilling program is the drilling of the exact number of holes necessary to adequately determine grade and dimensions of an orebody, no more and no less. This cost of development drilling represents a large part of the total development budget. Any technique which eliminates unnecessary drilling costs produces beneficial results, both to the company and to the person who can claim the savings. This high development cost factor has produced a quantity of research to develop techniques, for efficient control of drilling programs. Recent mining literature is full of articles describing methods for measuring and increasing the effectiveness of these expensive projects. The method described in this paper was developed during the latter part of a major development drilling project at the Christmas Mine of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company in Gila County, Arizona. It was used to test the need for drilling individual holes but could be expanded to control an entire project. This technique was used at Christmas as a practical means for evaluating adequacy of drilling on an individual hole basis, and it was possible to eliminate several previously approved holes. Application of this method involves an evaluation of geological conditions present and a good bit of common sense. Projects involving large disseminated, rather homogeneous orebodies of the porphyry-copper type would be the most likely candidate for application of the technique. Discontinuous orebodies would not be amenable to this technique. The method is based on the measurement of the linear correlation between the spatial distribution of two sets of data. The Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient is used. This is a standard statistic commonly used to measure linear correlation between two sets of data. The statistical significance of the correlation coefficient at a 95% confidence level is the main criterion for controlling the project. For purposes of reference we will call our technique the "correlation method" in this paper.

In a German governmental funded three-year research project, a closed loop recycling process for Nickel-Metalhydride-Batteries (NiMH) is under development. Today the discarded batteries are used in the steel industry as a cheap nickel source. Cobalt and rare earth (RE) are slagged and lost for reuse. The entire value of the metals in discarded Ni-MH is estimated to be 4?-4.5 ?/kg. Spent NiMH-batteries containing 36?42 per cent Ni, 3?4 per cent Co and 8?10 per cent rare rarth (Ce,La, Pr, Nd). The dismantled and processed NiMH-batteries are melted in a DC electric arc furnace producing a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase highly enriched with RE-oxides. The key to success in this process is to find a suitable slag system, which ensures best separation of NiCo-alloy from the rare earth oxides and high concentration of RE in the slag. Different oxidic and halogenic slag systems are investigated in the melting process. So far a slag system based on 65per cent CaF2 and 35 per cent CaO delivers the best separation of the two phases and metal yields. A slag with a composition of 20?25 per cent La, 13-16 per cent Ce, 1.5?2.5 Pr, 4.5?6.5 per cent Nd is obtained and further treated to misch metal hydro-/electrometallurgically. The first results of the influence of rare earth oxides on the density of CaO-CaF2slag system are shown at 1600°C. The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. The Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of southwestern Newfoundland merit investigation because of petroleum, salt and gypsum possibilities and indications of base metallization along the equivalent of the Horton-Windsor con-tact. In this paper, Lower Mississippian (Anguille) strata are divided into three formations: (1) the Cape John below, (2) the Snakes Bight and (3) the Seacliffs. A correlation between these formations and the Craignish, Strathlorne and Ainslie formations of the Horton group? in western Cape Breton Island is suggested. The criteria for the Anguille subdivision are essentially lithological, but preliminary study of included spore assemblages suggests more precise interformational correlations between Anguille and Horton sequences. The re-measured lower portion of the type section of the Codroy group is presented to define more clearly the stratigraphic position of numerous gypsum and limestone beds. This report summarizes the principal activities and results of 15 years of research by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, on methane control in coal mines. This research has investigated fundamental factors regarding the occurrence and movement of methane in coal beds, removal of methane prior to mining, and control of methane during mining. The report includes a bibliography listing the more than 150 publications resulting from the Bureau's methane control program as well as numerous other references, a section on methane recovery and use, a look at the upcoming Bureau of Mines research program, and a brief review of methane drainage practices in other coal-producing countries.
