Some new equipment for drilling vertical holes, cleaning blast holes, hauling explosives, and conditioning Diesel exhaust gas has been developed. at the Bureau's Experimental Oil-Shale mine near Rifle, Colo, The equipment has application, not only in oil-shale mining, but in many of the country's underground mines in which room-and-pillar methods of mining are employed. This report presents the Bureau's experience in testing the following equipment in the Experimental Oil-Shale mine: 1. A four-drill benching jumbo for drilling 23-foot vertical blast holes 2. A jet borehole blower for efficient cleaning of deep, vertical blast holes. 3. An explosives truck equipped with two compartments to provide safe conveyance for dynamite and detonators. 4. A mobile, electric substation to provide switching equipment, low-voltage and overload protection, and transformer facilities to remote locations in the mine. 5. A chemical conditioner for scrubbing the exhaust gases from Diesel-powered equipment used in underground operations. 6. Other units of equipment which have been tested at the Experimental mine.

THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. "A study has been done of the scale-up of laboratory bench-scale flotation to continuous plant circuit performance. It was found that the impellor speed and the air flow rate influenced the results and in this case extreme values of these operating variables were required in order to reproduce the plant rougher results in the laboratory. Despite the experimental uncertainty introduced by these extreme values, it was demonstrated that the plant performance could be predicted and experimentally reproduced with bench-scale tests.IntroductionThe mineral processing industry relies heavily on batch flotation testwork to design flowsheets, evaluate reagent s and compare various types of ore. The batch tests are generally regarded as being directly comparable within themselves, but quite often they relate poorly or not at all to continuous circuits. Obviously this dilemma generates considerable uncertainty with wide-ranging ramifications. One of the manifestations of this unfortunate situation is the commonly expressed opinion that ""it may work that way in the laboratory, but it will never work that way in the plant"".In a previous publication, a method was described whereby the results of batch bench-scale tests could be used to simulate a locked cycle flotation test series. The work to be described here is a continuation of that investigation with an extension to the simulation of an actual plant circuit. It would have been preferable to progress from laboratory batch data to a continuous pilot plant and then finally to a full-scale plant operation. However, because that possibility did not present itself, an attempt will be made to show that the performance of an existing plant circuit can be successfully simulated from batch data. The success of the procedure can be judged by the agreement among the plant results, a locked cycle test and the predicted results based on batch tests."

The Determination of Sound Exposures (DOSES) software was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) specifically for use by mine management and safety personnel. DOSES simplifies the record-keeping and analysis associated with time-motion studies and worker noise exposures, making it easier to identify and solve noise problems. The software relies on a time-motion study that profiles the worker?s daily activities. At the same time, noise measurements are collected with a dosimeter or sound level meter (SLM). Observations about the worker?s location and tasks or other activities are recorded along with times and durations so they can later be matched up with the noise data. After the completion of a time-motion study of the worker?s daily tasks and locations (possible noise sources), which measures the worker?s noise exposures during the recorded events, the information is entered into DOSES. The program then displays information about the worker?s accumulated noise dose over time.

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. The primary objective of this paper is to discuss the hazards and furnish a list of recommendations for the safe operation of quarries and related works. They have been compiled from Bureau of Mines publications covering the safety experience of engineers before and during the year in the mineral industry,5 from a publication of the National Safety Council, Inc.,6 from explosives recommendations made by various explosives manufacturers,7 and from suggestions obtained from quarries visited. The second objective is to describe and illustrate safety devices, practices, and quarrying methods. The quarrying and related industries of the United States had a lower accident-frequency rate than either the metal- or coal-mining industry as reported for 1942.8 However, the quarry industry ranked eleventh in 15 major industries during 1942 in lost-time accident fre¬quency; metal mining ranked fourteenth and coal mining fifteenth.

The tungsten properties of Lincoln Mines, Inc., and North Tem Piute Mining and Development Co. were first explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1942. Work on the project comprised trenching, sampling, a small amount of road and trail construction, and a small amount of core drilling. From April 13 to December 10, 1944, additional diamond drilling was done by the Bureau of Mines to test the lateral and downward extensions of the various tactite zones along the contact south of the Lincoln mine, including the property of the North Tem Piute Mining & Development Co. "In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six-head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin.The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill.The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator's station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt, and mesh sump.The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in tum lowers the miners' roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator's exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore, the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely."

INTRODUCTION When mining underground it is necessary to support the roof quickly to prevent it from collapsing after an area has been mined. Since the 1950s, the primary method for supporting the roof has been the installation of roof bolts. Roof bolting is one of the most basic functions yet one of the dangerous jobs in the underground mining operation (1). The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Health and Safety Accident Classification injury database showed an average of 660 roof bolter operator accidents per year over a 5-year period (1999-2003) (2). The numbers show that roof bolting is the most hazardous machine-related job in underground mining. It represents 39 percent of all machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. In 1993, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study that has shown the activity of drilling as the most hazardous job task performed by a roof bolter operator, accounting for 31 percent of all roof bolting injuries (3). Almost half (46%) of these drilling injuries were due to falling rocks or coal from the roof. All of these injuries occurred under supported roof. The majority of these injuries (about 99%) are not caused by a major roof collapse but from falls of smaller rock from the immediate roof. This type of roof failure has also been termed “skin fall.”"

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing mineral substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and materials.

This paper describes metal- mining practices at the Harrington -Hickory lead - silver - zinc mine at Milford , Beaver County , Utah . The operations of the Harrington-Hickory incorporate a number of features that should prove of interest and value to other operators of small mines . These features include employee participation in profits , a well- laid -out electrical system, adequate financing , a well - balanced equipment and supply inventory , a well - organized system of bookkeeping , adequate roads , and good management . As crude ore is shipped directly to smelters and mills in the Salt Lake Valley , close attention is paid to see that the ore is segregated by classes and treated where it can bring the greatest not return . A combination of these features has resulted in maintaining relatively low costs, considering the grade and size of ore shoots at a time , during and following the war , when equipment , supplies , and labor were costly and difficult to obtain . The period covered in this report includes two war years and two years following , from April 1, 1944 to June 30 , 1947 .

The first Report of Investigations of the present series (No. 4562) was on the fundamental properties of lead compounds, and the manner in which they set limits to the richness of lead products treated in the usual sintering-blast furnace units. These properties of the compounds were emphasized, as' it was desired, also, to learn the limitations of smelting the same compounds in present ore hearth practice; the hearth has a competitor in these "usual" units, even with the rich lead feeds best adapted for the hearths. Operating conditions that were followed in older metallurgical processes, when rich products, were treated, were outlined. The second report of the series (R. I. 4563) was on the development of the ore hearths of the types now used in the Tri-State from the viewpoint of the features, functions, and dimensions of the earlier hearths that had been most changed. Experimental data, for both well and poorly desulfurized charges being considered, were given to show the relative changes in the sizes and compositions of the charges after they were added to the ore (Scotch) hearths. A general picture was given of the charge column and of the conditions prevailing there when the operation was satisfactory. In this third paper, the composition of the gases prevailing in the charge column at various elevations will be correlated with what has been learned of the nature of the charge column in order to trace the steps of operation by which lead sulfide is converted into metallic lead. The metallurgical factors that govern operation and the lines along which improvements may be made will be noted.

Asbestos first became an issue to Minnesota?s iron industry when it was revealed that mineral fibers similar to those in Reserve Mining?s tailings were being found in drinking water for several communities that used Lake Superior as their primary water source. This discovery turned what had largely been an environmental court battle into a case concerning public health. The courts listened to much conflicting and uncertain scientific testimony on the size and distribution of the mineral fibers and on the potential health effects imposed by them. In April 1974, the plant was ordered to shut down by a federal judge but the company quickly appealed the decision. The appeals court granted a stay and ultimately ruled that the plant?s closure could not be justified based on the unknown health effects of the mineral fibers since the consequences of such an action would have immediate and severe social and economic impacts. The plant was allowed to continue operation, but ordered to abate emissions to air around the plant and to switch to a land-based tailings disposal system. Much of the scientific uncertainty and public concern over mineral fibers in Minnesota?s taconite industry remain today. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Gentlemen: I'm glad to see the crowd that's here this morning, glad to renew acquaintances with many old friends, and if you'll look at the program you'll see a heading there which states that as President I have the honor and pleasure to be here to address the membership of this meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, this being the 49th regular meeting. The tentative schedule of this gathering lists on the program the "President's Address," and I want to assure you that this will not be an address or a lengthy speech. It's said that a good speaker is one who arises to the occasion and then promptly sits clown, so please be at ease for I intend to sit clown very soon. There are other men here who have spent time writing and preparing papers on subjects that are to come up for discussion at this meeting, which will be, I'm sure, more interesting than what I have to say this morning; so again I'll say, we'll get this part of the program under way promptly.

MEXICO embraces one of the great metal and petroleum producing provinces of the world. In this respect its history dates back to the overthrow of the Aztec empire by a Spanish force under Hernando Cortes between 1519 and 1.521. Even before then, its richness in silver and other minerals was not unknown. But it was a treasure house for the Spanish conquerors until the country became independent in 1821. It has been computed that in the 400 years following 1521, Mexico yielded 1.55,000 metric tons of silver, worth $3,000,000,000, two-thirds of the entire world production. In 1935 the country accounted for 36 per cent of the world's silver output, 14 per cent of its antimony (in 1934), 13 per cent of its lead, 3 per cent of its zinc and copper, and 21/2 per cent of its petroleum. Contrary to the impression of some, its gold output is now comparatively small, though important in the past. Its oil, as well, formerly hulked much larger than now, in 1921 being one-fourth of the world output.

"Dust control is an increasingly important consideration for all mining operations from a health, safety, environmental and maintenance perspective. Modern mining operations incorporate a variety of mechanical dust control techniques into design however in many cases these engineered systems are unable to meet desired fugitive dust level targets. In these cases a variety of chemical dust suppression options are available to operators to assist in meeting their targets. This paper provides an overview of available chemistries, discussion of application techniques and equipment requirements and available performance monitoring technologies. This paper will also include a number of case histories discussing the treatment approach chosen, challenges encountered, chemical feed, storage and application equipment, monitoring techniques employed and results achieved.INTRODUCTIONDust FundamentalsFugitive dust by definition is an aerosol consisting of particulate matter suspended in a gaseous medium. Aerosols can include suspensions of particulate (solids) or sprays (liquids) or a mixture of both. Of particular concern from an occupational health and safety perspective are aerosols of particulate matter due to their involvement in classical occupations lung diseases such as silicosis, poisoning through chronic exposure to compounds such as lead and beryllium and expected involvement in more modern identified conditions such as cancer, asthma, and a host of other respiratory and non-respiratory conditions which may be caused or influenced through exposure to dust.According to the ""Glossary of Atmospheric Chemistry Terms"" (IUPAC, 1990), ""Dust: Small, dry, solid particles projected into the air by natural forces, such as wind, volcanic eruption, and by mechanical or man-made processes such as crushing, grinding, milling, drilling, demolition, shoveling, conveying, screening, bagging, and sweeping. Dust particles are usually in the size range from about 1 to 100 µm in diameter, and they settle slowly under the influence of gravity."" It should be noted that the behavior of particulates with respect to settling rate in air is a function of particle mass and shape and therefore the geometric size of the particle can be misleading. Occupational hygienists utilize the concept of particle aerodynamic diameter as a more representative reflection of particle size. Particle aerodynamic diameter, is defined as ""the diameter of a hypothetical sphere of density 1 g/cm3 having the same terminal settling velocity in calm air as the particle in question, regardless of its geometric size, shape and true density."" The expression of particle size as aerodynamic diameter allows for a more consistent understanding of particle behavior both from a settling perspective as well as from the perspective of how dust particles will behave in the respiratory tract. Figure 1 illustrates settling rates for particles of various aerodynamic diameters. The relationship between particle size and settling rate is important for understanding what size of particles must be addressed by dust control strategies as well as what particle sizes represent the most danger from an exposure and occupational health perspective."

A new mode of coal transportation based on the principles of pneumatic conveying has been recently, proposed by Soo, et al. [5]. Pneumatic transport is not a novel concept and commercial experience with pneumatic pipelines for short haul distances is plentiful. The list of applications is long and includes transporting ores, chemicals and pharmaceutical products, agricultural products, and domestic and industrial wastes. The study by Soo, et al. [5] updated an earlier one [l0] and presented the most recent economic evaluation of pneumatic transportation of coal. Their preliminary study concluded that there are immediate advantages for short-distance transport (less than 100 miles) and that it is both technologically and economically feasible. That study also concludes that pneumatic transport has a higher potential and more promising profitability in long-distance applications than rail if new track and roadbed must be built. Some of the advantages of long and short distance pneumatic pipeline transport of coal compared to rail and slurry transport are: 1) Replacement of diesel fuel consumed by unit trains, as the pipeline can be powered by coal-generated electricity; 2) Reduction of the skilled-labor costs required for upgrading and maintaining railroads; 3) Elimination of signaling, rerouting and overpass costs due to increased rail traffic on' mainline trackage;

Pumice and pumicite are siliceous volcanic substances quite similar in chemical composition , but somewhat different in physical properties , manner of formation , and mode of occurrence . Production in the United States has increased from 23,271 tons valued at $ 94,943 in 1910 , to 56,843 tons valued at $336,099 in 1930. Both pumice and pumicite are included in these figures as it has been impractical to collect statistical data on the separate commodities .

This report is a proceedings of a briefing recently sponsored by the Bureau of Mines at which Bureau personnel presented findings from their research efforts to improve steelmaking techology currently used in the United States. The papers contained in this report address many areas of concern to the iron and steelmaking industry. Among these are improving arc stability in electric arc furnaces, preheating ferrous scrap to reduce energy consumption, fluorspar substitutes in steel-making, basic steelmaking refractories, corrosion of iron-based materials, improvements in stainless steel acid pickling processes, recycling of stainless steel dusts and other wastes, and use of wastes as a source of zinc for electro/galvanizing.
