"INTRODUCTION The Iron Mountain deposits were examined in the summer of 1943 by engineers of the Bureau of Lanes, and a diamond-drilling project was set up under the Strategic Minerals Program. Actual drilling operations, under the supervision of a Bureau engineer, commenced November 9, 1943, and were completed on November 1, 1944. When the Bureau began detailed exploration of the Iron Mountain deposits, the Federal Geological Survey participated. Dr. I. W. Newhouse, of the Survey, and Dr. A. F. Hagner, of the Wyoming Geological Survey, were assigned to the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This Information Circular , one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines , reports on the methods and costs of mining and concentrating zinclead ore at the Highland Surprise mine in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene region of Idaho . The mine is owned and operated by the Highland Surprise Consolidated Mining Co. , which supervises operations of the Nevada Stewart group of claims , which is adjacent on the northwest . These properties are at the extreme eastern end of a zone of fracturing that strikes northwest across the Pine Creek area . In fractures along this zone are the principal Pine Creek mines ; these are the Highland Surprise , Nevada Stewart , Sidney , Denver , V and Idaho , Liberal King , and Northern Light . Country rock at the Highland Surprise is argillite of the Prichard formation (Belt series ) . Fracturing has permitted the movement of mineral- izing agents that have replaced adjacent walls and crushed country rock with sulfides . Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with accessory pyrite , chalcopyrite , pyrrhotite , and siderite . Three principal ore shoots were found on the Highland Surprise property . The Highland ore shoot was mined from outcrop to the 400 level . The Surprise ore body has been developed to a depth of 1,400 feet on the dip of the vein . The outcrop of the Surprise ore shoot was 150 feet long and 2 to 4 feet thick ; on the 1,150 ( lowest ) level , the ore shoot is 320 feet long and 10 to 17 feet thick , with good zinc content . Surprise ore shoot No. 2 occurs 250 feet west of No. 1 and has been mined from the 500 to the 1,000 level . From 353,000 tons of ore mined between 1910 and 1948 , the property has a recorded production of 256,000 ounces of silver , 7,500 tons of lead , 24,000 tons of zinc , and 412 tons of copper . Both shrinkage and cut and fill stoping methods are used at the Highland Surprise , but shrinkage is unsuitable for mining below the 700 level , because faulting has weakened the walls . Development of the Surprise ore , as well as exploration laterally and along the strike , is prosecuted steadily . A prospect heading is being pushed westward toward Nevada Stewart ground from the 700 level . The mill has a rated capacity of 275 tons per day and operates near capacity . Selective flotation makes zinc concentrate that is shipped to the Anaconda smelter and lead concentrate that is trucked to the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg .

Drive stability is critical in block/panel cave mining. The production levels of these mines are required to remain operational for the entire life-of-mine which can be in excess of 30 years. It is therefore necessary to produce high-quality drives to ensure sustainable mine productivity. In order to improve the quality of drives and pillars, this gold mine instigated a project to optimise their development blasting. The initial aim was to reduce the level of overbreak in development mining, which was averaging approximately 18 per cent. The benefits of controlling overbreak not only included an increase in the integrity of the drives but also a decrease in load and haul and ground support costs. Through focusing on the optimal blasting of the perimeter holes, overbreak was reduced to 4.5 per cent. The project’s focus then moved to drill and charge designs for development faces. In optimising these designs, it was anticipated that improvements in the development mining cycle would be achievable.CITATION:Klaric, P, 2015. THE EL TIGRE MINE is a highgrade silver and gold producer located in the northern part of Sonora, Mexico. It has been worked continuously since 1903, producing 50,000.000 oz. of silver and returning handsome dividends. During 1930 and 1931 falling silver prices compelled the Tigre company to make representations before the Department of Labor in Mexico City showing the necessity for drastic reductions in wages and personnel. The delays in obtaining permission from the Federal Labor Board to make these readjustments caused the company to suffer considerable financial loss during those years. After the reduction in operations was finally effected, the Sonora state government headed by Señor Francisco Elias (former Governor, now Secretary of Agriculture) and Señor Rodolfo Elias Calles (present Governor and eldest son of Señor Plutarco Elias Calles, recently Secretary of War and former President of Mexico) have cooperated with the company to make continued operation possible by revising downward certain state taxes that would have been a factor in forcing the closing of this mine. Also, permission to change our workmen over to another system of mining was essential to continued operation.

On Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, Bougainville Copper Ltd. (BCL) has successfully applied electronic data processing (EDP) techniques to pit operations and mine planning. Though the EDP program is not complete, BCL has realized significant improvements in short and long range mine planning, and equipment and manpower utilization. About 80% of BCL's 4000 employees are Papua New Guinea nationals, and most have little education or training. The operational characteristics of the computer equipment, however, have been quickly adapted by users with low educational standards.

Part 1.- Metal Mines Early experiments with mechanical loaders in metal mines were confined largely to machines of the shovelling type and generally air-operated. Although the first application of the scraper to metal mines dates back to 1910, it was not until about twelve years ago that it came to be used extensively. Generally, the scraper gives better results in metal mines than in coal mines, as degradation due to soft bottom and breakage are not factors, but it has a wide range of application and is successfully used in the mining of salt, potash, gypsum, zinc, copper, and a variety of ores, from soft material to hard chunky ore which settles compactly. Today, the scraper has replaced to a large extent the shovelling type of machine in metal mines. Scrapers have offered an inexpensive solution for the mucking problem and are now employed in most mining districts throughout the world. They are operated by labourers of all colours and degrees of skill. Each installation, however, requires individual study on the part of the mine mechanical department to determine the type of scraper, horsepower of hoist, and most economical speed of rope, as well as method of rope rigging. Unfortunately, the scraper has no power to select pay ore from waste and its suitability for use under circumstances which might require sorting of the ore can only be decided by a weighing of the economic factors involved

THE purpose of this communication is to present activity data of nickel in the Ni-A1 binary system that was obtained for oxidation studies in this system. This data has been calculated from previous aluminum activity data at 1000°C1,2 by two types of Gibbs-Duhem integrations. These results should be of particular current interest to oxidation studies of aluminide coated nickel-base superalloys3 as well as other problems. The aluminum activity of Steiner and Komarek1 is plotted in Fig. 1 as a function of composition in Ni-A1 alloys at 1000°C. The dashed parts of the aluminum curves represent our approximate extrapolations from the directly measured regions. In the terminal solution regions (a and L phases) standard parabolic solution functions of the following form are assumed: where i is the component subscript, Ki is a constant at a fixed temperature, and xi is the atom fraction. The resultant nickel activity curve at 1000° C from the Gibbs-Duhem integration4 of the aluminum data is shown in Fig. 1. The solubility ranges of the phases present in the Ni-A1 binary at 1000°C are also denoted at the bottom of Fig. 1. Corresponding values of the nickel activity, aNi and yNi, are listed in Table I at useful compositional intervals. including phase boundary values. The aNi and yNi data listed in Table I are subject to the uncertainties present in the experimental aluminum activity data1 and to deviations from parabolic solution behavior in the terminal solutions. The errors introduced into aNi and yNi due to the parabolic solution assumption are expected to be relatively small (<20 pct of the values given) in all the phases except the liquid phase. Some deviation from parabolic solution behavior in the liquid phase is indicated

Introduction To enlighten those who may be wondering where anyone could find sufficient data to write a paper on underground concrete work, the author would like to explain that, at Copper Mountain, we have found it necessary to line numerous headings with a layer of concrete in order to keep them in a safe and serviceable condition. The majority of these headings are scram drifts and ore-pass raises. This paper will therefore deal, in the main, with the methods of and reasons for placing concrete in these headings. During recent years, radical changes have been made in the methods of mining ore at the Copper Mountain mine. After considerable experimenting, a mining system has been developed making use of diamond drills for primary breaking and transfering such broken ore through scram drifts with slusher hoists. With the advent of scram drifts, it soon became apparent that some substantial means of reinforcement and protection for the scram drifts themselves would be necessary. Since the orebodies in this mine are cut by numerous dykes or faults, and often both, it was anticipated that some means of support would be required where headings necessarily passed through these incompetent zones. Further, as experience was gained, scram drifts were driven into pillars and in close proximity to old workings so as to recover the maximum amount of ore. In such places, the ground is often severely fractured, either as a result of previous mining or from the effect of excessive rock pressures.

Introduction Since 1930 numerous improvements have been made in equipment designed for the mechanical removal of broken ore in underground mining operations. New applications of mechanical equipment, as? well as improvements and adaptations of well established systems, are being made continually. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss present-day equipment for the removal or transfer of broken ore by means of a powered hoist and scraper arrangement. The terms used throughout the paper are those commonly employed in the trade literature and by mining men. The terms slusher hoist, hoist, and scraper hoist are used inter-changeably to mean a machine, powered by compressed air or electricity, with drums for the winding of wire rope. The tail rope, also known as the pull-back rope or return rope, drags the empty scraper toward the tail-sheave, that is, back to the loading point. No attempt is made to cover the entire field of application of scraping methods. Rather it is the? writer&apos;s desire to emphasize the fundamental principles of scraping practice and design and to relate them to some modern applications. The available literature on scraping practice has been freely used. together with personal observation and information and advice of practising engineers and representatives of companies manufacturing slushing equipment.

"IntroductionThis paper is the seventh of a series describing an investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines on underground communication. A review of past work and results obtained has been published. The present paper deals with a study of line-radio or wired-wireless methods of communication, herein electrical energy is transmitted by metallic conductors.The use of line-radio over metallic conductors has been practiced for a number of years, and at present is being used on a large scale in long-distance carrier-current telephone and telegraph. The early work of the U. S. Army Signal Corps and the Bureau of Standards in using ordinary radio transmitting and receiving apparatus for communication over metallic conductors was been descried. Later publications describe commercial applications, and an excellent treatise and resume is given by E. Colpitts and C. B. Blackwell.Scope of ReportThis report contains (1) a discussion of the chief factors affecting carrier-current transmission, with particular reference in application to underground communication for mines; (2) a description of typical underground circuits used for power and lighting; and (3) description of apparatus used and results obtained in line-radio experiments in coal mines near Pittsburgh, with circuit diagrams, and conclusions as to power requirements and limitations for mine use."

Double benching has been utilized as an excavation technique in open pit mines for many years. This process involves drilling, blasting, and excavating the material for the design bench height. A second bench is then excavated without the creation of a catch bench, i.e. only minimal offset from the first bench face is allowed when drilling off the second bench. The result is a double high bench face or double bench. When drilling off the second bench, the offset of the drill from the bench face projects the lower bench face into the pit up to an extra five meters. This reduces the maximum attainable bench angle, enhances the probability of rock escaping the catch bench and increases the overall strip ratio. The generally utilized process of trim blasting also can impact on the final bench profile by contributing to blast damage of the face. BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc., Ekati Mine Diamond MineTM, has pioneered the usage of a technique that eliminates this offset. Double benching is accomplished by drilling a single, 30m pre-shear (two 15m benches) to define and protect the final bench profile. This article provides a comparison of the attained face angles obtained in the field utilizing both of the above methods, as well as a comparison with the analytically predicted angles prior to excavation.

Paper presented at the Mining Institute of Scotland's annual general meeting held in Glasgow, 8th April 1916. Although there is nothing novel or difficult about the sinking described, circular shafts are not numerous in Scotland so the details connected with such a sinking may be of interest. The shaft was sunk at Dykehead Colliery, Larkhall, which has been worked for over 50 years from the upper seams. It became necessary to sink another shaft to serve as a replacement downcast, by which the output might be maintained and some of the lower seams won. As the sandy clays regularly caused bulging into the rectangular shaft and sinking of the surrounding ground it was decided to make the new shaft circular and to enclose its mouth in a foundation-block of concrete resting on the solid clay. Details are given of the sinking, brick seating and lining, kettle strike, water-rings and doorhead lintels as well as the permanent fittings, winding gear and the cages themselves

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

"INTRODUCTION Compressed air for operating coal-mining equipment is seldom considered in conjunction with modern methods and appliances. But the Jamison Coal & Coke Co. has proved the economy and efficacy of compressed air for this purpose at its Mine 8 near Farmington, 8 miles west of Fairmont, Marion County, W.. Va., and the mining industry as a whole concedes its superior safety in gassy or dusty coal mines.The uses for compressed air in coal mining are now generally associated with such equipment as coal punchers, chain-breast machines, and to a lesser extent the ""radialaxe"" type of mining machines.Electricity has rapidly superseded compressed air for power in coal mines during the past 20 years; and in the last few years the general, and often unwise, use of electricity at the face region has taken on added impetus through the widespread use of mechanical loading equipment.Some of the unfavorable results of this increased use of electricity are shown in the growing number of mine explosions and fires of electrical origin. In the past four years 59 explosions of this type took the lives of 672 men, or 74.8 per cent of the total number of deaths from explosions were due to explosions of electrical origin.3In 1926, an explosion in Mine 8 of the Jamison Co. killed 19 men. The exact source of ignition was not determined, although it was definitely decided that it was of electrical origin and probably was at an electric coal-cutting machine.Prior to this disaster the company had done some experimenting with compressed-air-driven mining machines, and its Mine 9 had been completely equipped with air-driven chain-breast machines; a few of these machines were also in use in Mine 8. The explosion, however, gave impetus to the adoption by this company of compressed air for operating face equipment. The chain-breast machines were as satisfactory as electric machines of the same type; but the trend in the industry was toward faster cutting machines, which required less physical exertion on the part of the operating crews. A track-mounted machine of the arcwall type was found to be suitable for the conditions and system of mining, so that one of these operated by compressed air was developed by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. working with the officials of the Jamison Co.The first of these machines was installed in the latter part of 1926 and additional machines were delivered from time to time, until at present there are nine of them in the mine. Necessary improvements have been made, with the result that a fast-cutting, easily handled, efficient, and safe mining machine has been developed for cutting the hard Pitts¬burgh bed coal of the Fairmont field."

Control of respirable dust produced by auger type continuous mining machines is normally attempted by water sprays from fixed nozzles mounted on the frame of the machine. In tests conducted under this contract, a &apos;wet auger&apos; system was used, where the spray nozzles were mounted on the rotating auger itself. The tests were conducted at the Hunter mine of Smith and Stover Coal Company using a Jeffrey 1.00L auger miner. Operating the mining machine in the wet auger mode, it was found to produce 47 pct less respirable dust than when the fixed conventional sprays were used. On section dust levels were reduced too 3.5 mg/m3 which is equivalent to approximately 2.0 mg/m3 for a full shift portal to portal sample. The major difficulty that had to be overcome was the development of a simple reliable water transfer mechanism to get the water into the rotating augers. This was successfully achieved by the development of a water-through-the-shaft water system. This system can be retrofitted to existing machines and is available in kit form.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

The uranium mine environment is characterized by airborne radon-222 and its daughter products to which miners are exposed through breathing and by gamma and X rays from the uranium-235 and uranium 238 chains to which the miners are exposed externally. The nature of the radon-daughter concentrations and the methods used to define and measure the exposures are explained through an extensive review of the literature. An improved passive track-etch dosimeter for personal use is proposed which has a measurement range of about 30-400 WLH with a 95% confidence interval to ~25% for individual detector measurements in relatively stable mine air. Some measurements of these dosimeters adapted to environmental use are also presented. A program of development for enhancement of dosimeter sensitivity and greater accuracy of measurement is outlined. Extensive gamma-ray survey measurements were made in two Colorado and three New Mexico mines. Follow-up personal miner dosimetry with LiF TLDs was done at the mine with the highest exposure rates, The average miner exposure rate measured was 4.27 mR per day, or 9.3 of the maximum permissible level averaged over 13 weeks. Comparisons are made with previous mine surveys and their value in estimating miner exposure is discussed. Some depth-dose measurements made using Lucite as the absorber are evaluated.

Kimbley v. Luckey, Okla. - 179 Pacific 928, p. 831. OWNERSHIP OF MINERALS LACHES NO BAR. The owner of minerals in land can not be barred by laches for failing to assert his ownership where his title had not been ques- tioned and his right invaded. No lapse of time bars one's right to property and it is only in case his right has been invaded that it can be barred by laches.
