"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. Marrow vein deposits will continue to be an important source of valuable minerals. Productivity per manshift is not keeping pace with operating costs. Increased mechanization of stoping operations must be obtained to create greater productivity at a reduced cost per ton. This application of mechanization may be to either present methods or to newly developed concepts. The total mine unit operations will be effected by increased productivity. Two approaches to increasing the mechanization of narrow vein stoping were studied with the intention of increasing stope productivity and decreasing stoping costs. A method of bringing efficient rubber-tired equipment into narrow cut and fill stopes was designed. It proposes to provide stope access by way of a ramp constructed on the stope fill. Impact breaking equipment was studied and specific applications proposed.

A simulation model RoadSIM using the ARENA modelling system has been developed to evaluate roadway development options for a given development panel configuration. The RoadSIM simulation system has provisions for variability/randomness in operations including cutting and loading at the face, tramming and discharge of coal to the boot end and availability of equipment. The modelling system provides a means for assessing the operational limitations of roadway development practices at a particular coalmine. It is a ?what if? tool that allows a range of equipment, configurations and operating practices to be assessed in terms of achievable advance rates and equipment utilisation. Output from the system is in the form of a dynamic visualisation as well as summary reports and detailed logs of operations over time.

"Una de las enfermedades más extendidas en la industria minera es la pérdida de audición inducida por el ruido. La exposición de los mineros a niveles de ruido superiores a los niveles de exposición permisibles resulta en la pérdida de audición de aproximadamente el 80% de los mineros del carbón a la edad de jubilarse. En este contexto, el Instituto Nacional para la Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH, por sus siglas en inglés) está realizando investigaciones para desarrollar controles de ruido aplicados a los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos. Este método de minado es usado para extraer la mitad de la producción nacional de carbón subterránea. A partir de las mediciones en campo, se determinó en investigaciones anteriores que los componentes dominantes que generan sonido en el cizallador de un sistema de tajeos largos son los dos tambores de corte utilizados para extraer el carbón. Debido a las dimensiones y complejidad de los sistemas de minado de tajeos largos, el proyecto NIOSH desarrolló un modelo de elementos finitos validado del tambor de corte para utilizarlo en la predicción del sonido generado por este debido a las fuerzas de excitación experimentadas en las operaciones subterráneas. Este mismo modelo se utilizará para desarrollar controles de ingeniería para el ruido del tambor. Las fuerzas de excitación surgen de la interacción de la broca de corte y el carbón, y se transmiten al tambor de corte a través de los sujetadores de brocas. Debido a las condiciones adversas en el frente y la falta de instrumentación aprobada para uso subterráneo, las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón no han sido evaluadas anteriormente. Para este fin, NIOSH, en colaboración con la Universidad Tecnológica de Michigan, desarrolló una broca instrumentada autónoma con seguridad intrínseca para medir estas fuerzas. Este artículo describe el desarrollo de la broca instrumentada y la medición de las fuerzas operativas de corte de carbón en tres minas. Las mediciones revelaron que las fuerzas tienen un espectro plano, algo característico de la naturaleza del impacto de estas fuerzas, hasta alrededor de 100 Hz. It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

Pneumatic conveying of coal underground is not widely used in the United States, although it is becoming increasingly popular in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, and South Africa. The question of safety has been raised repeatedly: Will the system be prone to dust or gas explosions, and, if so, can it withstand such occurrences safely? The work reported here was done under a Bureau of Mines contract and deals with the safety aspects of pneumatic transport of underground coal, as well as the hazards inherent in more conventional haulage systems. Included are three designs for different applications of pneumatic haulage: off-loading a continuous-mining machine on a room- and-pillar section, vertical hoisting through a 1,200-ft shaft, and off-loading a tunnel-boring machine driving a 2,000-ft tunnel.

The volcanic rocks lie to the north of a belt of Timiskaming sediments.

"The aggressive industrialization of America, the development of powered tools which generated massive amounts of respirable-sized dust particles, a latency period which may mask the relationship between exposure and development of disease, inadequate (or perhaps even careless) understanding of the relationship between dust exposure and disease, and respiratory protection which has later proven to be inadequate have resulted in a series of epidemics of silicosis which have caused the premature death of many workers.1-11 Emphasis on the regulatory control of dust levels in the workplace has greatly reduced the development of pneumoconiosis in the United States and in other developed as well as underdeveloped countries, yet the prevention of silicosis or coal workers' pneumoconiosis has not come close to being accomplished. Despite the public health perspective that pneumoconiosis arc totally preventable illnesses, there appears to be little evidence that this is the case.Cases of pneumoconiosis continue despite aggressive enforcement policies by regulatory agencies, attempts at dissemination of very readable materials aimed at workers and management 12.13 and respiratory dust exposure standards which are in place and appear, for the most part, protectivc.14- 16 It is more than frustrating for all parties associated with advocating workers' health to see reports of workers with aggressive silicosis. On another level, both the physician and the affected worker are helpless when a diagnosis of silicosis or coal workers' pneumoconiosis is made. Both realize that there is no proven way to affect the natural history of these progressive inflammatory and fibrotic processes. Neither is there any ""compassionate use"" therapy. What must be developed, at the very least, is a ""salvage therapy"" which has the potential to reverse, or at least dramatically lessen, the aggressive natural history of silicosis which develops over relatively short time periods. Because of the aggressive nature of silicosis (compared to coal workers' pneumoconiosis) attempting to develop a therapy for this illness should be a priority."

During the past 6 years the Mining Division of the U.S. Bureau of Mines has prepared many information circulars containing valuable technical data covering the operating details of mining and ore-dressing plants throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. These papers, written for the most part by operating officials in the field, have been designed to comprise a reference library for the operating engineer. In order to make the information contained in these publications more readily available to the busy engineer the enclosed series of reference tables has been compiled. The tabular arrangement is by subject rather than alphabetical order, thus avoiding the bulk of an alphabetical index.

IN addition to its base-metal and coal mining operations, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has, for the past quarter century, been one of the few large American mining companies interested in dredging. Its activities in this field are confined to gold, and to Alaska, but it is the largest operator in that territory, with twelve huge dredges available to work during the summer on the frozen ancient beach sands at Nome and the gravels of Fairbanks. These operations will be described separately.

This information circular, which describes mining methods and practices at the Baguio Gold Mining Co., Philippine Islands, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs. Since January 1952, Baguio Gold Mining Co. has operated its rehabilitated mine and mill in the Baguio district. Postwar labor and supply costs are three or four times prewar costs, whereas ore tenor and tonnage are about the same. Ore reserves remain approximately the same, but deeper and more spreadout operations add to increasing costs. Recently the company has acquired an adjoining property, which may lengthen its life substantially. Costs and general operations are more or less typical of the district, which includes three other active gold mines. Gold ore mined in the district totals approximately 4,300 tons per day.

Mineral raw materials produced in California, other States, and foreign countries were purchased for consumption in quantities valued at over $60 million at 800 of the 1,200 chemical plants operating in California Fn 1960, according to questionnaires completed by company officials. These and other data received from mineral consumers, producers, dealers, and Government agencies formed the basis for this the first of a series of reports designed to present the intricate features and relationships controlling mineral raw material supply and demand in California industries. The results of this study indicated certain changes in use patterns of minerals in chemical manufacturing; a shift in requirements from metals to nonmetals, from inorganics to organics, from natural to synthetic materials, and from distant to local sources of supply.

THE genial assistant to the president of the New York Trust Co. is the latest addition to the Institute's board of directors, having been elected at the March meeting of the hoard to fill the unexpired term of the late E. E. Ellis. Usually when a banker is appointed to the board of a company the reason is obvious; the difference in this case is that the New York Trust Co. has some of the Institute's money, instead of vice versa. But Harry Hamilton is not really a banker-at least not primarily. Frefluently big financial institutions have a good mining engineer on their staffs to keep them from financing too many "cats and dogs." At any rate Mr. Hamilton gave up his consulting practice in San Francisco back in 1927, to accept his present position in New York. Until then, from the time he graduated from Yale in 1904, lie was constantly engaged in mining operations of one kind or another in the West and in Mexico. His first job was at Christmas, Ariz., where lie did "sampling and miscellaneous work" for the Saddle Mountain Mining Co. The writer tramped up to, all over, and through that property one hog day many years later, when it was run by the Christmas Mining Co., and carp assure the reader that without doubt the young Yale graduate got some good experience and was well broken in. From there Mr. Hamilton went to Cananea for a time, and then to the Copper Queen, at Bisbee, where he was a valued member of the rigging gang. An assignment of assaying and sampling for the Shan¬non Copper Co. at Metcalf lasted for a few months and then he accepted a job for a year with the geological department

This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

The objectives of this study were to examine a representative cross section of formal safety analysis techniques developed for the nuclear and aerospace industries, to recommend those methods that would be suitable for application to the mining industry, and to include those methods in a user's manual. Volume II of this report, the user's manual, describes several methods that were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of the methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry.
