HE Tonopah Extension property consisted originally of three claims, with an area of 38 acres. In 1902 a shaft, now known as No. 1, was started near the eastern end of the property, close to the Tonopah Mining Co.'s boundary line, in the. andesite cap rock' which covers the ore-bearing formations in the western end of the Tonopah district. A short distance below the 60-ft. level, the orebodies pinched out, although the veins continued. This shaft has not been used since 1916. Before 1910, the production was small, coming mostly from small shoots of high-grade shipping ore. In that : year, the, company started its 30-stamp mill and cyanide plant; the mill was later enlarged to 50 stamps, with a corresponding increase in the cyanide-plant capacity, which brought the capacity of the mill up to 350 .tons per day. The total production of the mine to Oct. 1, 1920, is 871,177 tons of ore, from which was recovered 15,267,216 oz. of silver and 156,241 oz. of gold.' This makes an average recovery per ton of 17.5 oz. silver and 0.179 oz. gold. The average price received for silver since' the beginning of operations is 65.87 c. per oz., and the average value recovered from the ore-'is $15.25. The area of the property has been gradually increased by purchases and consolidations of adjoining ground until it is now 647 acres. A new shaft, known as No. 2, was started in 1912, 1600 ft. west .of No. 1, and in the following year a crosscut on the 750-ft. level of this shaft resulted in the discovery of the. GOLD AND SILVER, the monetary metals, have presented in the last year a striking contrast; gold has experienced unusual prosperity, while silver has been depressed more severely than ever before. Gold mining has been hailed as the only basic industry that is able to thrive on depression; the new gold produced is thought by many to be the most important material for the reconstruction of prosperity. Silver production, meanwhile, has been sinking to its level of 40 years ago, and its price to a level never before recorded. These factors have reduced the value of silver produced in 1932 to about the value of the average annual production more than a century ago, that of the decade 1801-1810. No other major commodity in world trade appears to have suffered a greater decline during the present depression.

The Tertiary channel gravel deposits in northern California were selected Or detailed investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as part of a national program to locate potential sources of gold that might be developed rapidly by large-scale mining operations. Five bureau research centers representing mining and metallurgy subsystems coordinated their efforts in a team operation to identify and investigate possible solutions to the problem area, that long have discouraged the resumption of large-scale mining in the deposits. This report summarizes the individual investigations, conclusions and recommendations conducted and prepared by all mining subsystems research groups after the completion of two years of field work at the deposits on San Juan Ridge in Nevada County, California. The studies indicate that modern mining technology can cope with the environmental problems that closed the immense hydraulic mines in 1,884. however, they also indicate that mining can be conducted with only marginal profits its unless the price of gold remains substantially above $70 per ounce or unless sufficient by-products can be recovered and sold to place the average value per cubic yard of gravel into a positive commercial range. The by-product potential of the Tertiary gravels remains to be investigated in more detail.

This report summarizes the fundamental research and technical studies conducted by the Explosives Branch of the Bureau of Mines from July 1, 1943, to June 30, 1949. It is the thirteenth of a series of annual reports, which have aimed to bring to the reader a resume of the research results that have appeared in published form during each fiscal year. The work of the Explosives Branch covers a number of activities - explosives research, explosives testing, flame and combustion research, flammability of gases and vapors, dust-explosions research, and technical studies in the experimental mine. An important part of the work of the branch is fundamental research to advance our knowledge and understanding of explosion processes. Considerable emphasis has been placed on studies of ignition and flame stabilization, as it is felt that an understanding of these processes should assist materially in alleviating explosion hazards in coal mines. The results are also finding important application in the development of jet propulsion. Studies of the explosibility of gases, vapors, and dusts saving thousands of lives and are preventing the destruction of much property. In innumerable instances in which potential explosion hazards exist, safe operating procedures have been recommended from data taken in the Laboratory. Aware of the value to national security of research results of combustion, flame, and explosion, the Army, Navy, and Air Forces are actively supporting important phases of this fundamental research.

Laboratory amenability studies as well as a pilot heap-leaching investigation of low-grade sandstone uranium ores from Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado are described. Sulfuric acid heap leaching with oxidation, for 120 days, extracted up to 98 percent, 90 percent, and 79 percent U308 from Wyoming, New Mexico, and Colorado ores, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines determined the costs associated with the production of chromium, in the form of chromite and high-carbon ferrochomium, from the demonstated resources of 10 market economy nations. The analyses evaluated the relative geologic and economic position of these chromite resources contained within 80 producing or potential mining operations. This report presents cost evaluations of a demonstrated resource of chromite, contained within the nations studied, of appoximately 1.2 billion metric tons (t). Of this total, 70 pct is contained within the southern African nations of Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa. The majority of current chromium mining and smelting capacity is contained within these two countries as well. India and the Philippines have recently demonstrated greatly increased chromite resources and hold the most promise for expanding both chomite and ferrochromium production outside southern Africa. Their demonstrated resources represent approximately 7 and 16 pet, respectively, of the cost evaluated total tonnage. Chromite resources, on an identified or hypothetical basis worldwide, are highly concentrated within Zimbabwe and South Africa, with these two nations containing in excess of 95 pet of the total. Given the present market structure, a majority of chromium contained within the demonstrated chromite resources of the nations studied is economically recoverable; but from a long-term resource and economic perspective, South Africa should inceasingly dominate the markets for both chromite and high-carbon ferrochromium. In addition, it is anticipated that an increasing percentage of chromium traded on the world market in the future will be in the form of high-carbon ferrochromium as opposed to chromite, as this additional processing stage continues to relocate from the industrial nations that account for a majority of chromium consumption to those nations that mine chromite.

This report has been prepared, not only for the purpose of recording the results of the first series of coal-dust tests conducted in the experimental mine of the Bureau of Mines, but also to place before the mining public a description of the mine and an account of the objects sought in its establishment. Soon after the organization of the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey, J. A. Holmes, then chief of the branch, concluded that for the solution of various problems relating to the causes and prevention of mine explosions it would be best to carry on large-scale tests in a mine rather than in a surface gallery. The idea of utilizing the underground passage of a mine for making explosion experiments did not at' first meet with general approval among investigators in this country or abroad. Many thought a mine passage was not a proper place in which scientific tests could be conducted, as great difficulty in controlling conditions was expected. However, after all arguments for and against such an investigation had been carefully considered, plans for opening an experimental mine were definitely adopted by the Bureau of Mines in 1910, and an allotment of funds was made to carry out the project. The first endeavor was to find an existing mine suitable for the purpose, but the mines offered by owners were either worked out, were wet, had poor roofs, or presented complications of various kinds, so that it was finally decided to open a mine if a site could be obtained having natural conditions that would fill the various requirements. A most desirable location was found on property of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., near Bruceton, Pa. The president of this company, Mr. W. K. Field, the general manager, Mr. G. W. 1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1980, 13 companies operated 33 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 62% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 30% of the total production; Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas 19%; Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina 15%; other central and eastern States 36%. Based on published producer prices output of primary metal in 1980 was valued at over $7 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 26% of domestic consumption in 1980, building 22%, transportation 21%, electrical 12%, consumer durables 7%, and other uses 12%.

A new series of reports called ?Mineral Perspectives" (MP's) has been initiated by the Bureau of Mines with the publication of MP-1 titled, "Far East and South Asia" by K.P. Wang and the staff of the Bureau of Mines. This new series parallels the creation of the recently announced "Minerals Commodity Profiles" (MCP?s). Both series are designed to provide current information on important sectors of the mineral economy to assist professionals in government, industry, and education in monitoring supply-demand relationships that have significant impact on our domestic economy as well as on the international scene. The orientation of the "Mineral Perspective" series is a geographic one which examines the mineral situation of a region or a country. The "Mineral Commodity Profile? series examines individual mineral commodities. They are in this sense complementary.

Underground mine development begins with the positive investment decision to mine and ends with the inception of full-scale exploitation. It incorporates all activities, personnel, and equipment required for creation of underground access to a mineral deposit. Because of the depletion of near-surface mineral resources, the reduced mobility of large surface mining equipment, increasingly stringent environmental constraints, and the introduction of promising innovations to rock penetration and rock excavating equipment (e.g., continuous miners, rock borers), under-ground mining is projected to account for an increased share of worldwide mineral production in the foreseeable future. Without proper engineering during the mine development phase, failure of the underground mining project is axiomatic. A frustration attendant to coverage of the complex area of underground mine development lies not only with the need for treatment of the many disparate specialties within the area but even with the lack of systematization of these specialties in what is recognized as a vital precursor to successful mining. The U.S. economy continued to grow moderately in the third quarter, but at a slightly higher rate than in the previous quarter. According to the Department of Commerce's preliminary estimate, real gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.3% during the third quarter of 1985, compared with a revised 1.9% for the second quarter and 1.6% for the third quarter of 1984 (table 1). Civilian unemployment dropped from the constant 7.3% rate between February and July to 7.0% in August and 7.1% in September. Employment on nonagricultural payrolls continued to increase (table 2), resulting in a continued rise in personal income, which in turn supported growing consumer purchases. Although purchases of services continued to provide the underlying foundation for the economic growth, the manufacturing sector received additional stimulus from significant increases in consumer purchases of durable goods, particularly automobiles. The increased demand for durable goods resulted in significantly higher industrial production for August and September, compared with levels attained previously this year (table 3). Capacity utilization increased to 80.5% in August but returned to 80.2% in September, matching the 1985 low previously reached in July (table 4). The real net export deficit grew only $0.2 billion in the third quarter; at $34.0 billion, however, it continued to exert a negative influence on the economy. On September 22, in an effort to reduce the deficit and make U.S. goods more competitive on world markets, the U.S. Government agreed to cooperate with the Governments of France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, and the United Kingdom in attempting to lower the-value of the dollar in relation to other world currencies. Low inventories, rising factory orders and construction spending, the possibility of a lower U.S. dollar, and aggressive automobile production plans announced by domestic producers for the fourth quarter indicate the potential for an increase in manufacturing activity in the United States.

IN the past few years and especially since the beginning of World War No. 2, gold has attained a new, important. and critical place in the international scene, and in world affairs. In the past, as far back as history records, most wars have been waged for the purpose of acquiring it from someone else by conquest. But now, the most titanic struggle of all time is being waged with the avowed purpose of not only destroying it, but of destroying all that it stands for and represents. A tradition dating back to ancient Rome, affirms that battles are fought by men with weapons, but wars arc eventually won by gold. The validity of that tradition is now being subjected to its major test. Hitler has proclaimed that in his new world order, the work dollar or reichsmark, a beautifully engraved paper currency representing only a theory of value, based on unit of work and production, will become the supreme medium of world exchange, and that gold eventually will he valueless and obsolete.

It is a pleasure to submit to the National Critical Materials Council (Council) some of my thoughts concerning the important tasks which lie before you. It long has been my belief that America's economic health and national security may depend to a substantial degree on whether we have available to us an adequate supply of critical and strategic materials at reasonable cost. To the extent the Council can contribute to the identification and implementation of wise public policies which facilitate the achievement of that goal, we and our children should be grateful. Even before assuming office, President Reagan warned of the danger of undue dependence on imported materials essential to the Nation's defense and economic well-being. After his election, he appointed a transition task force on strategic and critical materials, and he later directed the Cabinet Council on Natural Resources and Environment to prepare .a National Materials and Minerals Program Plan and Report to Congress, which he forwarded to the Congress in April 1982. In 1984, my predecessor, Secretary Clark, established the National Strategic Materials and Minerals Program Advisory Committee, popularly known as the "Mott Committee" because of its distinguished chairman, retired Admiral William C. Mott.

This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guidelines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer simulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. Tin mining on Seward Peninsula, Alaska, has been intermittently active since the early 1900's. Most of the recorded production (over 2,200 short tons of metallic tin) has been obtained from placer deposits, but recent production also has resulted from development of lode deposits associated with intrusive rocks occurring in the western part of the peninsula. Generally, the lode deposits containing tin minerals (principally cassiterite) are found in dikes, in granite masses, and in silicate zones in limestone overlying the granite. Both the placer and lode deposits have been of considerable strategic interest to the Government because of the almost total absence of a domestic supply of tin. The most important tin-lode deposit discovered to date is in the Cassiterite dike at the Lost River mine, on Cassiterite Creek about 85 miles northwest of Nome. This highly altered, rhyolite porphyry dike averages 12 feet in thickness, strikes N. 75° to 85° E., and dips steeply to the south; it can be traced on the surface for about 8,000 feet. Throughout its explored length of about 2,200 feet the dike everywhere contains some tin and tungsten in veinlets and disseminations; economic concentration of the are minerals, however, is confined to definite shoots. The ore minerals include cassiterite, stannite, hulsite, paigeite, wolframite, scheelite, and base-metal sulfides; gangue minerals include fluorite, boron silicates, and lithium-bearing minerals. Some ore minerals also occur in the numerous other dikes and in the granite and intruded limestone in and adjacent to the mine.

The report is the first in a new series called "Mineral Commodity Profiles" (MCP's). Designed to give an updated review of important events affecting critical minerals, it also presents a comprehensive description of industry structure, supply-demand relationships, technology, and outlook for the future.

NICKEL Plate mountain coincides closely with that portion of the Hedley mining district which is of economic interest. From it has come almost the entire past production, and the active mines of the present epoch, Nickel Plate-Sunnyside and Hedley Mascot, lie in a compact group near its summit. The Hedley district, which is 210 miles due east of Vancouver, is situated in the Okanagan range of southern British Columbia, where this rather gentle uplift is deeply dissected by the canyons of the Similkameen and its tributaries. The region is essentially part of the Interior Plateau of the Province (Figure 1), but is adjacent to easterly elements of the Coast Range. The Similkameen canyon, 4,000 feet in depth and frequently less than 4 miles from rim to rim, traverses the district from northwest to southeast. The deepest and narrowest portion of the canyon lies between Hedley and Keremeos, 18 miles to the southeast. At Hedley, an important tributary, Twenty Mile creek, enters from the north in a bold canyon, making a focus of unusually rugged topography. Nickel Plate mountain occupies the sector to the east of this junction (see Figure 2) and its flanks are ringed by the cliffs of Twenty Mile canyon on the west and by those of the Similkameen canyon on the south. On the east, it slopes gently to the hanging valley of Eighteen Mile creek, and on the north, with only slight loss of elevation, it merges into the moderately hilly surface of the plateau.

"Zinc is a relatively abundant element which occurs as both high-grade sulphide ores {sphalerite ZnS) and oxide ores which the ancients collectively termed ""calamine"" (smithsonite ZnC03 and/ or hemimorphite Zn4Si201(0H)2 - H20 and/ or hydrozincite Zn5(C03) 2(0H)6). Although oxidic zinc is readily reduced by carbon, the process becomes thermodynamically viable only at - 1000°C, and at this temperature the zinc is released as a vapour (B.P. 907°C). Casual cooling of the vapour results in its re-oxidation by excess combustion air or even the carbon monoxide product of the reduction reaction. ZnO + C = C09,, + Zn vapom Only fairly rapid quenching of the zinc vapour and the isolation of the reduction products from the combustion gases will yield metallic zinc; these conditions were not produced deliberately until the advent of distillation technology. Until quite recently, the principal use of zinc was in brass manufacture; galvanized iron was not discovered until the 19th century and zinc casting alloys are a relatively recent invention. As will be seen, brass could be produced without recourse to a pure zinc intermediary, and the discovery of brass preceded that of zinc by many centuries. The purpose of this paper is to outline the discovery and early development of both zinc and brass with special reference to the European scene."
