Water-jet-assisted cutting involves the use of a mechanical cutting bit in combination with a high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip. Such a jet can offer benefits in terms of improved cutting, reduced dust and fines, and improved bit wear. The Bureau of Mines, through a contract with the British National Coal Board, has researched the use of water-jet-assisted cutting on roadheaders. After several engineering design problems were overcome, this program led to the successful underground testing of these roadheaders. Today, more than 60 water-jet-assisted roadheaders are in operation around the world and numerous others are on order. This paper details the evolution of these machines and the benefits to be gained by their use.

There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg skarn system (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production from the third lift deep ore zone (DOZ), has reached 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd) during 2010, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody was proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the deep mill level zone (DMLZ).

Borates are minerals that contain boron. Trace amounts exist in rocks, soil, water and people. Boron-containing ores are rare and U.S. Borax, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Borax, controls one of the world’s two world-class borate deposits. Through its global systems of mines, refineries, ports, sales offices and distribution centers, the company supplies nearly 45 percent of the world’s demand for borates. Borax has been mining borates in California for more than a century. This year the company celebrated 131 years of continuous business in the Golden State and 76 years at its operations in Boron, the site of California’s largest openpit mine. It also has mines and refineries in Argentina, refineries and ship-ping facilities in Europe and technical staff in the United States, North and South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. So, with the 130±years of borate mining and processing experience behind it as well as its global marketing and distribution centers, there is very little that Borax does not know about borates.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. An exasperated voice on the other end says, “There has been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men.” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There is something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we are trying to figure out what is wrong” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings. An excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks.” If this is not enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again. A stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Co. No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine.” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, though, if this happens, what do you do? Most people think: “It can’t happen to me.” But mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. A mine’s response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This article examines the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical disaster. The authors then present a systematic crisis-management response.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County constructs twin Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnels through cohesive soils and rock beneath the Allegheny River and a narrow city street in Pittsburgh, PA. The tunnel alignment includes an historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and an office building constructed directly over the alignment during the design of the tunnel sections. This paper provides an overview and update of the general site conditions, TBM tunnel design, and support of excavation for the TBM launching pit. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed.

Machine-related injuries are one of the major safety concerns in underground coal mines. Severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck, crushed, or pinned by mining equipment such as a continuous mining machine (CMM), shuttle car, or a scoop. Proximity detection systems (PDSs) have been applied in mining to reduce these types of injuries and fatalities. All of the PDSs that are currently approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for use in underground coal mines are magnetic-field based and could be affected by metallic objects such as trailing cables. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated the influence of trailing cables on the performance of PDSs. In particular, the magnetic field coupled from proximity system generators to a de-energized trailing cable was characterized. The results show that significant energy can be coupled from the proximity system generators to a trailing cable when there is a closed loop in the cable. The effect on PDS performance from the magnetic field radiated around an energized trailing cable was also quantified for different current amplitudes in the cable. It is shown that the magnetic field caused by the electric current in the trailing cable mainly consists of a 60-Hz signal and its harmonics which causes little interference to the PDS. The results presented in this paper can help PDS manufacturers to design better systems that are more immune to these effects.

The mixshield will excavate the 8,534 linear m × 6.7 m ID (28,000 linear ft × 22 ft ID) tunnel for the City of Portland Oregon?s, Bureau of Environmental Services (Owner) East Side CSO Tunnel Project. TBM selection was conducted under a preconstruction contract in which the Contractor, Owner, Construction Management Consultant and Designer collaborated on TBM selection prior to commencement of construction. Uranium has been mined in Namibia since the 1970s. The worldwide increasing need for energy in the early 2000s has led to the development and opening of a second uranium mine in 2007 and has triggered an increased interest in uranium exploration, often referred to as “the Namibian Uranium Rush.” In all, four mining licenses have been granted by the Namibian Government, which currently has two mines in operation, a third undertaking trial mining and the fourth in project finance negotiations. In addition, highly intensive prospecting activities at additional deposits are at an advanced stage. The finalization of the strategic environmental impact assessment (SEA) on uranium mining in 2010, the first of its kind and scale in the world, has enabled the Namibian government to assess this uranium rush and its tremendous legal, socioeconomic and environmental impacts and to prepare for the different future scenarios conceivable when this article was written in 2011, including both a skyrocketing and a complete breakdown of demand scenario. The Fukushima disaster and plans of the Namibian government to significantly increase royalties and company taxes in 2011 have threatened the market situation, forcing investors to reevaluate Namibian uranium mining projects. However, with the tax and royalty increase initiative since withdrawn, most projects are back on track at this point in time.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attention in a wide range of process engineering applications including process operations. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies applying the latest technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Goals of real time performance monitoring includes maximizing the profitability by maximizing production, improving efficiency, attending product quality, costs, maintenance, environmental and safety regulations. Designers must consider the greatly expanded desktop computing, Microsoft object technology, Internet and how to build these systems. This paper discusses some opportunities and challenges using objects, components in designing applications and integrating intelligent systems tools. Two examples using performance equations and IS technologies applied to mineral processing are presented.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

It is indeed a rarity for a non-engineer, let alone a lawyer, to even be considered for a mining-related award, especially where that award is for significant contributions to technical progress in the mining and exploration sectors. So, when I was notified that I had received this award, I struggled for a topic that would meld the legal world that I operate in with the engineering driven world of exploration and extraction. The most exciting part of my job has always been the opportunity to absorb the technical details of the cases I work on and, in effect, translate them for a lay audience. Too often, I have found, lawyers, judges, legislators and yes, even regulators who lack a technical background simply give up trying to understand the details of the very conditions or processes that they are trying to describe and simply repeat phrases told to them by their client or by a retained expert.

Four companies mined ball call in four states in 2009, H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co. (owned by Imerys Group), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. Washington?s King County is constructing a new regional wastewater treatment facility, called Brightwater, in response to growth in the greater Seattle region. Planning conducted in the late 1950s identified the need for two regional treatment facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these plants have served the region well. However, an eventual need for a third facility was also recognized. The Brightwater project implements the final phases of the long-term plan. The project includes a new treatment plant and an extensive conveyance system. When completed in 2010, the Brightwater facilities will treat sanitary sewer flows from growing populations living in northern King County and southern Snohomish County. The new system will fulfill commitments to provide wastewater services to local jurisdictions and sewer service providers in the King County Service Area. It will also provide more flexibility in the operation of the King County regional wastewater system. The Brightwater wastewater treatment plant will provide secondary treatment capacity using membrane bioractor technology in 2010 for 36 million gallons per day (mgd), with anticipated expansion in 2040 to 54 mgd, using membrane bioreactor technology. These capacities are for average wet-weather flows. The plant will also accommodate peak hourly flows of 130 mgd by 2010 and 170 mgd by 2040. Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.
