This paper presents the design and construction of a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. Three issues related to sensor placement are addressed in this paper: 1) sensor placement in long, horizontal boreholes, 2) development of simple, robust, MSHA-acceptable clamping unit, and 3) orientation of the geophones within the borehole. Improved imaging capabilities will produce energy, environmental, and economic benefits by increasing exploration accuracy and reducing operating costs.

On Aug. 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the city of Richmond, VA. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This article describes the fast track design, bidding and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft-sinking methods and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, VA with up to 305 mm (12 in.) of rain that, in some areas, caused widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed and caused local combined sewer and stormwater flooding. The collapsed sewer was a 2.4-m x 76-mm (8-ft- x 3-in.-) wide by 2.7-m- x 152-mm- (9-ft- x 6 in.-) high arch sewer that was constructed in the 1920s and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to cur-rent elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately 18 m (60 ft ) deep and 31 m (100 ft) in diameter. This caused the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage, contaminated floodwaters reached depths in low-lying areas in excess of 8 m (25 ft).

Strabag, in partnership with Arup, is constructing the Advance Tunnel for the Scarborough Subway Extension (ATSSE); a project by Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (Sponsors). The 10.7 m internal diameter single bore tunnel represents a significant departure from the traditional arrangement of twin subway tunnels in North America. ATSSE is the first-time steel fibers are used to solely reinforce a tunnel of this size in Eastern Canada. This paper discusses the challenges with design and acceptance of SFRC segments and the state-of-the-art numerical models employed to check the joint performance. The advance procurement approach for TBM and PCTL’s procurement to accelerate the project schedule is also presented.

With the passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), and the implementation of state permanent programs, underground coal mining operations are for the first time subject to government regulations regarding subsidence. These regulations now and in the future will directly affect the manner in which mining companies mine their coal. Since the promulgation of the original final regulations by OSM, numerous changes in those regulations have been made and many additional changes are pending in the near future. This paper will discuss state and federal approaches to regulating underground coal mines and examine issues surrounding future subsidence regulations.

Local community acceptance is a key aspect of planning and managing mining projects, whether through sustainability assessment and reporting or corporate social responsibility programs. However, there has been very little research to understand the determinants of community acceptance. This paper seeks to identify key mine characteristics and demographic factors that influence individual acceptance of mining projects. Six demographic factors and 16 mine characteristics were selected based on literature review. Four of the six demographics factors were confirmed to be significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with people?s attitude of the importance of the mine characteristics. All sixteen mine characteristics are identified as important factors. The most important mining factors are Job opportunities, water shortage or pollution, air pollution and land pollution. Both the mining and control groups have same opinion of 12 mining characteristics and differ on four (infrastructure improvement, labor shortage for other businesses, noise pollution, and mine life). During design and management of mines, this data can be used as a reference. This result will facilitate better choice experiment (survey) design for discrete choice modeling. Such discrete choice models can provide a viable framework for data-driven community engagement and sustainable mine management.

Flexible Dilatometer Test (FDT) is one of the in-situ test methods for determining the deformational characteristics of rock masses. In this study, several dilatometer tests have been conducted in different geotechnical phases of site investigations by means of two types of FDTs. The purpose of this paper is comparison of the performance of these two types of dilatometers and analysis of the differences in the results of the tests.

Thee Brightwater water treatment facilities, currently scheduled to be completed in 2010 and begin operating in 2011, will serve the northern part of King County, WA. The facility includes a new treatment plant and extensive conveyance system consisting of more than 21 km (13 miles) of influent and effluent conveyance tunnels and five portals. The majority of the conveyance system tunnels are mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Tunnel and portal construction is divided into three main contracts. The Ballinger Way receiving portal, constructed under the central tunnel contract, is the terminus for the BT-3 leg of the central contract and the BT-4 terminus of the west contract. The shaft has a 7.3-m (24-ft) finished inside diameter (ID) to accommodate removal of the central project TBM and the west contract TBM and extends to a depth of 66 m (216 ft) below grade through a complex and challenging soil profile characterized by multiple ground water tables. Vinci Grand Projects/Parsons/Frontier-Kemper Constructors (VCFK) was the joint venture team for the Ballinger Way portal. Frontier-Kemper was responsible for the shaft sinking. VCFK evaluated either slurry wall techniques or ground freezing for earth support during excavation of the portal and liner installation. The selection process took into account the vertical depth, cost, past practice, geology, water tables and a 9-m- (30-ft-) thick zone of contaminated soil at the top of the shaft. Ground freezing, which would also act as a hydraulic barrier, was deemed the better option for this project. The contract was awarded to New Jersey-based geotechnical contractor Moretrench. Typically, frozen walls, by design, key into an underlying cutoff. At the Ballinger Way portal, however, the [ ] freeze bottomed out in a substantially thick stratum consisting of predominantly clay, but with some inclusions of permeable soil that indicated significant ground water pressures. To ensure stable conditions at the bottom of the shaft, Moretrench, which also specializes in dewatering, designed and installed a perimeter array of deep wells to temporarily depressurize the permeable soils. Effective solids suspension is a necessary precondition for particle collection, and solids suspension is largely dependent on the hydrodynamics of the flotation cell. This study attempted to correlate the status of the suspension of apatite particles of different sizes in a Denver laboratory flotation cell versus the impeller rotational speed (N) adopted to operate the machine. The latter variable (N) influences the impeller capacity to lift the particles from the bottom of the tank and also to disperse them throughout the volume of the vessel. Such an impeller capacity can be characterized by the critical impeller speed for the accomplishment of solids off-bottom suspension (Nz) and also by the velocity of the radial water flow discharged by the impeller (U) divided by the particle terminal settling velocity (Us). This way, the status of the suspension of apatite particles inside the flotation cell can be characterized by one of three categories: ?segregation? (N/N2 < 0.60 and Us/U > 0.08); ?suspension? (0.60 = N/N2 < 1 and 0.06 < Us/U < 0.10); and ?dragging? (N/N2 = 1 and Us/U = 0.03). The range of impeller rotational speed (N), which was able to suspend the finest particles (Dp = 90 µm), was unable to suspend the coarsest particles (Dp = 254 µm). Conversely, the high value of N (N > 1,300 rpm), which is adequate to suspend the coarsest particles, may promote the entrainment of the finest particles to the froth layer.

This study was initiated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to develop guidelines for determining the maximum economic recovery of resources in coal mines. The work was in response to a requirement in the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 and Federal regulations. The intent was to address the economic rainability of small, irregular reserves in existing longwall mines. In particular, there was a need to determine if room-and-pillar mining using a continuous miner (CM method) was economically sound, or whether unconventional (short or odd-shaped) longwalls could be used to recover small coal reserves economically. Small reserves, called "widgets" are left in longwall mines on one side of the mains, near outcrops and adverse geological conditions, or near any other location where reserve geometry does not lend itself to mining with a rectangular longwall panel. The work included (1) analysis of the geologic, geo-technical, and economic factors that influence the recovery of small coal reserves, (2) analysis of historic changes in supply, demand, and coal prices, (3) development of typical cost models for room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and (4) development of a practical methodology for determining maximum economic recovery. The methodology included an evaluation of the ratio of coal mined during longwall mining to that mined for development (LDR) as well as costs of maintaining coal quality depending on market conditions. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) is the largest manufacturer of iron ore pellets in Canada and its customer base covers North American, European and Asian steel producers. The company operates a mine, concentrator and a pelletizing plant in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as port facilities located in Sept-Iles, Quebec. It also operates a 418-km (260-mile) railroad that links the mine to the port. IOC has approximately 1,900 employees. Its shareholders are Mitsubishi Corp. (26.18 percent), Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Income Fund (15.1 percent) and the international mining group Rio Tinto, which is its major shareholder (58.72 percent) and operator, with activities in more than 40 countries throughout the world. The IOC was incorporated in 1949 and by 1954 it had completed the Quebec North Shore and Labrador (QNS&L) rail line. IOC began mining in Schefferville, Quebec by 1954 and closed those operations down in 1982. In 1962, IOC commissioned the present day Carol Project consisting of mining, concentration and pelletizing facilities in Labrador City, Newfoundland. In 2004, IOC shipped its one-billionth tonne of ore on the QNS&L Railway. In 2005, IOC celebrated 50 years of mining history. The company expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m x 1 m x 1 m or 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft x 3.2 ft) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects, including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal, an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine that, to date, has significantly improved upon baseline measures. One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infiltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rockmass, resulting in reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muckpiles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realized. To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used a first-of-kind technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with GPS locations. A large population of digital images were analyzed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22, 2012 when the 2012 class is inducted during a special ceremony in Las Vegas, NV in conjunction with MINExpo 2012. The NMHF&M will induct four men representing the equipment manufacturing, minerals exploration, copper and coal sectors of the mining industry. The diverse cross-section of mining industry giants joining the hall of fame include Glen A. Barton, J. David Lowell, Samuel Newhouse and John Cleveland Osgood. They will join 214 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 25th Silver Anniversary Induction Banquet & Ceremony. These men were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors within their own sectors and across the industry at large.

Environmental regulation is an ever growing cost to the mining industry. Requirements for such items as air quality modeling, hazardous waste disposal, selenium concentration in water and sagebrush planting consume more of the mining industry’s resources each year. The mining industry is willing to make the necessary financial commitments to assure that the air, land and water resources are adequately protected and restored. However, it is sometimes difficult to explain to management and stockholders why money should be spent on a specific issue when science and common sense indicate it is being wasted. Common sense and sound science should dictate how mining is regulated.

This article advances an innovative concept explaining the connotation and technical system of "green" mining. The important theoretical foundations of "green" mining are the distribution and development characteristics of joints, fractures and bed separations, and the seepage and flow behavior of methane and water in the broken rock strata following coal mining. The main focus of "green" mining technique includes water-preservation in mining areas, coal mining under buildings with bed separation spaces grouted to retard surface subsidence, partial extraction and backfill mining, simultaneous extraction of coal and coal-bed methane, coal roadway supporting and underground disposal of rock waste, underground coal gasification, etc.

This paper focuses on the separation and extraction of lead and zinc from Egyptian ore at the Eastern Desert close to Red Sea. The ore sample contains cerussite, galena, hemimorphite and other impurities. Experimental program includes flotationof galena using xanthate collector and cerussite using oleic acid as collector and sodium silicate to depress hemimorphite tailing. Galena, and hemi-morphite are converted to carbonate with sodium carbonate prior to metal extraction. Lead and zinc are extracted pyrometallurgically at 1050°C and750°C or electrochemically respectively. The overall performance of the applied method amounts to 99.2%. Extraction efficiency of lead and zinc amounts to 98% and 94.5 % respectively. A model assumed that galena and cerussite in the ore are partially oxidized and can be liberated by grinding. Oleic acid selectively reacts with cerussite in a multistep sequence. Preliminary cost estimate shows that the price of the products is competitive to their local market prices.

In this work, a new flotation strategy was proposed for the flotation of rutile. In this strategy, rutile was activated by Pb(NO3)2 and then floated with amyl xanthate (AX) as a collector at pH 8. Pb(OH)+ was the dominant lead species in the solution at pH 8 and is believed to be the major species reacting with the rutile surface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) study revealed that the lead activation products were well distributed on the rutile surface, and AX− could further bind with the Pb atom on the Pb-activated rutile surface. In this regard, the Pb-activated rutile could be floated by AX. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Pb(OH)2 was generated on the Pb-activated rutile surface. The electron transfer during the adsorption of the AX− on the Pb-activated rutile surface was also investigated by XPS analysis.

Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

In bygone days, the mineral engineer spent most of his/her time on the technical aspects of designing, building, and managing mineral operations. In the last few decades, mostly since the 1960s, increasing amounts of engineering man power and time are spent dealing with federal, state, and local government agencies, laws, and regulations. It is not possible to plan, design, build, or operate mines, mills, smelters, or even office buildings without detailed consideration of government regulations and permitting requirements dealing with environment, worker health and safety, etc. The four chapters of this section provide an overview of the social, legal, political, environmental, and health and safety aspects of mineral enterprise. The section sets the stage for the working engineer/geologist in industry, government, consulting, or academe and points the direction for more detailed study in each of these areas.
