Crushing and grinding account for the major portion (60 to 80 percent) of the overall expenses for ore processing. Autogenous (AG) and semiautogenous grinding (SAG) have been considered a step forward in comparison to conventional grinding circuits with several stages of crushing and using ball (and/or rod) grinding mills (Bassarear, 1982, MacPherson, 1989, Pithois, Casalis, 1983, Maripuu et al., 1983). However, there remains room for improvement to existing AG and SAG technologies and both technologies have immense economic benefit potential. Experience gained by the Technics & Technologies of Disintegration Ltd. (TTD) in the research of grinding processes shows that grinding in AG and SAG mills can be performed in a more effective way. The company's approach comprises the following elements: ? Novel mill design. ? New liners and lifters. ? Novel discharge grid design. ? Technique of treating material of critical particle size. Comparative tests that demonstrated the usefulness of these innovations are described in this article. Currently, there are hundreds of AG and SAG mills in operation throughout the world. Application of new internal elements of the mills and reconsideration of the circuit design of the existing grinding equipment using present technological solutions would significantly increase the throughput rate and diminish power requirement.

Video techniques for monitoring exposure, such as NIOSH’s “Helmet-CAM,” employ both real-time dust monitors and mobile video cameras to assess workers’ respirable dust exposures. Many real-time personally worn dust monitors utilize light scattering sensing elements, which are subject to measurement biases as a function of dust type (size, composition, shape factor) and environmental conditions such as relative humidity. These biased and inaccurate dust measurements impair the monitor’s ability to properly represent actual respirable dust concentrations. In the testing described, instrument mass concentration data was collected using three different types of commonly used commercial off-the-shelf personal dust monitors and compared to a reference standard. This testing was performed in a calm air (Marple) dust chamber in which three units of each make and model (for a total of nine monitors) were used for each test. Equivalency factors (EF, a multiplier to match the Thermo TEOM 1400a reference instrument) ranged between 0.746 and 1.879 across all dusts and environmental conditions tested, and between 0.821 and 1.519 on the ISO test dust.

As the 2009 George Fox Conference neared its conclusion, Arthur Silber, project chief of the Mass Transit Tunnel (MTT) project was able to pull away from the constant buzzing of his Blackberry long enough to give a short presentation and a significant piece of news to the record 318 attendees at the Graduate Center, City University of New York regarding the MTT project. ?As the former administration (The Bush administration) was leaving office, we were told that Congress was notified of the FTA?a (Federal Transit Authority?s) intent to issue final design construction approval to us,? Silber said of recent advancements concerning the $7.2-billion dollar project. It will add passenger rail service from New Jersey to New York City as part of the Access to the Region?s Core project in the form of the Trans Hudson Express Tunnel (THE tunnel). ?That 10-day waiting period ended yesterday (Jan. 26).? In days leading up the Fox Conference, those involved in the tunneling industry, and the MTT in particular, had a lot to be optimistic about. The MTT received environ-mental approval on Jan. 14 (see page 9) and, with the acceptance of the final design, the multi-billion dollar project moved that much closer to a ground-breaking ceremony. So close, in fact, that before leaving his office for the conference, Silber posted the contract documents and plans for the Manhattan Tunnel project online at www.arctunnel.com (an indepth look at the project from Silber is on page 22). While many were interested in the progress of the project, Silber also spoke about the new plans for the cavern complex at the New York Penn Station expansion. The original plans called for two lines that would come into a large cavern complex with a north and south cavern to access the trains. After numerous core samples were taken from the streets of Manhattan, it was deter-mined that this design was not feasible and changes were made that will include a deeper cavern under Sixth Avenue, with 14-m (45-ft) of cover with a 30-m (96-ft) wide cavern that resides entirely under 34th Street. The cavern was also moved 20 m (60 ft) to the west to remain at least 61 m (200 ft) away from New York City Water Tunnel #1. The new design will include three-over-three track arrangement. The mezzanine will be 46 m (150 ft) below street level at 8th Ave, Silber said.

INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. In the past two years recent increases in silver prices over levels that prevailed for many years have changed supply/demand patterns. On the supply side, a silver mining boom is in progress in the United States and elsewhere. On the demand side, traditional uses of silver by individuals are dropping while industry is conserving. These changes will alter the supply/demand balance and bring about more moderate rises in silver prices, which in turn will impact the mining industry.

This marks the 15th consecutive year for this column. During 1995, readers were asked to supply royalty data for construction raw materials especially for states where none is available. The response was discouraging and royalty data are still missing for several states for either sand and gravel or crushed stone. Several readers have said that this article has merit but more new information is needed to justify its continuation. Several articles and pieces of news relative to mineral royalties appeared in the trade journals. R. Lee Aston (E&MJ, November, 1995, p. 16N) described South Australian royalties as amended by the government in1994. The royalty rate (a percentage) was lowered but the assessed value for minerals was raised and the current rate amounts to 20 cents//t (18 cents/st).

Introduction The weight of a Mining Truck can be affected by field modifications, the selection of items like tires, rims or even the conditions in which it operates. Truck performance and the compliance with a number of ISO standards, e.g. braking, steering and ROPS are dependent on truck weight. It is critical that truck owners understand the impact of changes in weight1. What makes this even more difficult for owners to evaluate is that there is no standard terminology or definitions for Mining Truck weights. This paper discusses and defines weight terminology, how it applies to performance and standards and the impact on the application of Mining Trucks.

Pre-support measures for urban tunneling have seen a substantial development in the recent past. Ground improvement techniques, pipe-arch and spiling methods now allow for non-disruptive tunneling at very shallow depths under sensitive structures, rail tracks and roadways. The paper presents experience gained on national and international projects built over the past decade that represent case histories and therefore may be used as guidance for the development of similar solutions for future tunneling projects at shallow depths. Reference projects include tunnels for the Washington, DC Metro, London Underground, Dulles Inter-national Airport, Busway tunnels in Boston and the Ft. Canning Tunnel in Singapore.

Sustainability issues are from rising interest and importance for the mineral industry worldwide. In order to bring them into management processes and to improve decision processes, economic, ecological and social aspects of products, services or technologies have to be assessed. In this paper, the concept of integrated sustainability assessment is presented. Each aspect is assessed with quantitative or qualitative methods. The results of these ecological, social and economic sub-assessments are integrated by the means of Fuzzy Logic in order to regard preferences of decision maker and circumstances of decision situation. An example demonstrates the application of this new instrument.

SYNOPSIS A Wirth tunnel borer owned by Anglo American Corporation completed a 1150m long tunnel some years ago and was subsequently extensively modified by Technical Development Services. In 1982 this borer provided new and particularly interesting information In the field of hard rock boring. The abrasive quartzltes traversed proved to be a challenge to the cutter manufacturer and the project team. This paper examines the problems faced, the solutions found and the lessons learnt.

The Wharf Resources mine, located in the Bald Mountain Mining District approximately 6.4 km (4miles) west of Lead, South Dakota, has operated a surface gold and silver mine and heap leaching processing facility since 1983. Wharf Resources intends to mine and process gold and silver ore from the Wharf Expansion area which is located on the eastern flank of the currently permitted Foley Ridge Mine. The Trojan Pit for the Wharf Expansion area was initially designed with an overall highwall slope angle of 45o. During mine permit presubmission meetings with personnel from the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), the question arose as to whether a detailed slope stability analysis of the proposed Trojan Pit highwalls was completed to justify the 45o slope. Wharf’s response was that the highwall design was based, in part, upon studies completed in1987 on the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines; and, in part, upon subsequent slope stability analyses conducted by Wharf mine personnel through 1996. It was suggested by the SD DENR that the stability study be updated to reflect structural geological conditions in the Wharf Expansion area.

Many appraisers/valuers believe that the only valuation method available within the Cost Approach category for Real Property appraisal is the depreciated replacement cost method. Some valuation and financial reporting standards setters also believe the same. This paper introduces the minerals appraiser to a number of useful methods for mineral property appraisal that are based primarily on the principle of contribution to value, the predominant economic principle in the cost approach. Most of these cost approach methods discussed are primarily for use in valuation of exploration tracts and resource properties that have no defined reserves. However, the powerful rural cost method can be used to calculate the contribution of categories of resources, reserves, and other property components to the value of a mineral property. This method can be applied to mineral properties at all stages of development, including producing properties.

Auxiliary Equipment pumping systems to support primary, secondary and regrind grinding circuits will be the primary focus of this paper. Every grinding system is unique and requires special design considerations for proper application of pumps to transport mill discharge. To satisfy the majority of applications, a new series of pumps has been developed by Svedala, known as World Class Pumps. Selection of these newly developed pumps for each type of grinding circuit will be presented. Specific components of selection are materials of construction, piping system, classification method, material characteristics and slurry characteristics. Both horizontal and vertical pump applications will be reviewed with emphasis on rules of pump piping and sump design.

Large amounts of manganese-rich slag were generated from smelting low-grade manganese ore containing high iron and high phosphorus in electric furnace or blast furnace, which contain 25–40 mass% Mn. This paper describes an efficient hydrometallurgical process for the utilization of high manganese slag instead of conventional usage of pyrometallurgical route for manganese recovery. Pressure acid leaching of manganese-rich slag using air as pressurized gas is studied systematically. The effects of mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, partial air pressure, leaching time, and liquid-solid (L/S) ratio on the separation of manganese with other main impurity components were investigated comprehensively. Under the following optimal process conditions, weight of manganese-rich slag powder,100 g; mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, 20:1; sulfuric acid concentration of 140 g/L; air pressure of 0.6 MPa; leaching temperature of 140 °C; leaching time of 1 h; L/S of 7:1; ore size of 75–80 μm; and stirring rate of 600 rpm, the extraction rate of Mn reached 94%, and the dissolution percentage of Si, Al, and Fe are as low as 2%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. The leaching slurry presented a good solid-liquid separation characteristic. The silicic acid formed during sulfuric acid leaching manganese silicates was converted to filterable dehydrated SiO2 particles which precipitated in the residue under the condition of higher temperature with higher pressure. The effect of adding pyrite may be to reduced iron ions and decreased the output of iron hydroxide colloid and also reduced MnO2 to manganese sulfate in sulfuric acid leaching. Thus the formation possibility of colloid such as silica gel and iron hydroxide was decreased, and higher yield of manganese sulfate could be achieved.

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of top-down managerial practices: layoffs of employees, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefit is often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative, and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization’s various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Dramatic cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

Lost foam casting patterns are foamed polystyrene shapes glued together into the shape of the part to be cast and are coated with a refractory material consisting of a mineral mixture and binders. Prior to casting, a significant number of the patterns are damaged and inevitably land-filled. In this study, a process is developed for the recovery of foamed polystyrene from the coating and glue contaminants. The process consists of shredding, impact comminution, size classification and density separation. It is successful in separating up to 97% of the contaminants, while recovering 95% of the polystyrene.

The demand for phosphate will continue into the future, because phosphate is currently irreplaceable as a plant nutrient and in many chemical applications. Phosphate is not recycled, so the supply must be replenished through a process of mining and purification. The most energy intensive part of the process, separation of phosphate from the ore, requires 54 to 78% (depending on the method used) of the estimated 0.5 quads of energy consumed by the U.S. phosphate industry. This paper provides data from a project designed to determine if a biotechnology can be developed to separate phosphate from its ore. Several hundred microorganisms (both bacteria and fungi) capable of solubilization of phosphate ore have been isolated from the environment. Work is ongoing to determine the mechanism for solubilization. In addition, how these organisms could be used in a bioprocess is being investigated.
