A near-record crowd of mining history enthusiasts made the trip to Leadville, CO in September to attend the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum’s 19th induction banquet. Dressed in Victorian garb, black tie tuxedos and formal gowns, the 268 people honored four distinguished men who made a lasting impact on the U.S. mining industry. They joined 188 other inductees. The first induction banquet took place in 1988, with about 500 people attending.

"While mines generally focus on achieving operational efficiency, creating shared value for all stakeholders is also a management goal. This includes taking a holistic view of their supply chains and increasing local participation. This paper examines the role of supply chain management in mine management; in particular the effect of a strong local supply chain on regional economic impacts. Using input-output analysis, the impact of a local supply chain on a mining sector’s regional economic impact is examined by increasing local sourcing (increasing local purchase percentage -- LPP) for 10 key commodities. An approach, based on multipliers and excess local capacity is used to identify key commodities. The impacts examined are sales, employment, labor income, and value added. The work is illustrated with stone mining and quarrying in Missouri. Ten percent increases in LPP of the key commodities, in this example, result in $4.1 million additional impact on the Missouri economy. This work can provide insight on how to better create shared value for all stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Little research has been published on improving mine supply chain management (SCM) to enhance regional economic impacts. Although some extensive academic research has explored the importance of an industries’ supply chain, not much is known about how a locally-based supply chain increases shared value in the resource sector. Across industries, traditional SCM is getting more and more complex. This is true of the mining sector as well. However, this increased sophistication is not directed towards increasing shared value for all stakeholders, particularly, the local communities. Further research is required to develop new SCM strategies that enhance local participation. One major point of difference between this work and traditional supply chain management is the inclusion of stakeholders’ shared value as a goal in SCM. Creating shared value has become a business goal in recent years (Porter and Kramer, 2011). The authors use input-output analysis (Leeuw, 2012) to evaluate the regional economic impacts of supply chain decisions, which is not part of traditional SCM. Although input-output analysis has been applied to SCM for decades, most of the research uses input-output analysis as a tool to advance an industries’ own operational efficiency (Accenture, 2014)."

Enclosed cab filtration systems are typically used on mobile mining equipment to reduce miners? exposure to airborne dusts and diesel particulates generated during mining operations. Various filter configurationscan be used within the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of cabs to remove the airborne contaminants. The air cleaning performance of cab filtration systems is highly dependent on the efficiency of the air filters, the number of filters used and their placement within the HVAC system. This paper shows how to mathematically model cab filtration systems and illustrates a methodology for developing other cab filtration system design models. Node diagrams of several filtration system circuits are illustrated with their mathematical models at steady state airflow and concentration conditions. Laboratory and field data are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of modeling enclosed cab air cleaning performance. The paper concludes that incorporating multiple filters throughout the HVAC system improves the air cleaning performance and robustness of the cab filtration system design

India produces about 70 Mt/a (77million stpy) of coal ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from burning about 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) of coal for electric power generation. The average ash content is 35%. In contrast, the United States produces about 70 Mt/a (77 million stpy) of coal ash from burning 800 Mt/a (880million stpy) of coal for power generation. Its average ash content is less than 10%. In 1998, GAI Consultants Inc.(GAI) embarked on a federally funded, multiyear project to assist the government of India in solving its growing coal-ash management problem.

Introduction In terms of the world's recoverable coal reserves, Canada ranks 10th, providing 0.6% of the world's total. The US is first with 27.8% and the Soviet Union follows with 24.1%. Figure 1 shows the principal coal mines in Canada. Several provinces contain substantial coal deposits, but the largest deposits are found in the western provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. Conservatively, 90% of the lignitic, 80% of high volatile bituminous, and nearly 100% of subbituminous, and low and medium volatile bituminous coals are located in these three provinces. During the past decade, Canadian coal production of all types increased from 18.8 Mt (2 million st) in 1972, to 25 Mt (28 million st) in 1975, to 61 Mt (66 million st) in 1984. About 38 Mt (43 million st) of this output was classified at thermal and 23 Mt (25 million st) as coking and metallurgical coal (Table 1). The three western provinces currently produce 57 Mt (62 million st) of coal - 95% of Canada's total. The remaining 3.6 Mt (4 million st) (5%) is produced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick on the east coast. The majority of western coal (98%) is produced by surface mining methods. On the east coast, though, mining is predominantly underground and only 15% is produced on the surface. In 1985, Canada exported close to 28 Mt (30 million st) of metallurgical coal and thermal coal. During the same period, 15 Mt (16 million st) of coal were imported, mostly from western US for use in Ontario and Quebec. Almost 60% of the imported coal was used for thermal applications. The remaining 40% was metallurgical coal for the steel industry. It is generally cheaper to import coal into central and eastern Canada from the eastern US to augment local supplies rather than from western Canada. This is mainly because of high transportation costs. Mining methods The suitability of mining methods in a particular area depends largely on the geological setting. The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices, and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents a result of research work on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis and control of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where, and how much energy is being used. Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) involves a wide range of practices, from highly informal and minimally mechanized mining operations with predominantly manual work to formal practices carried out by small but high-tech industrial mining operations [1]. ASM may be a traditional practice, with skills passed from one generation to another. It can be an important driver of local economic development, while simultaneously contributing to a complex array of positive and negative socioeconomic and environmental impacts. There are more than 100 million artisanal and small-scale miners in 80 countries worldwide, and they supply around 20% of the worldwide gold production [2]. According to the Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mining (MINEM), in 2020, 32% of fatal accidents in formal (legal) Peruvian mining operations were caused by groundfall events [3].The lack of resources, knowledge of best practices in health and safety, and insufficient equipment used in ASM make the probability of suffering work accidents very high. Furthermore, groundfall is one of the main causes of accidents and injuries in underground mines around the world [4], and it is also a concerning problem in ASM, where the associated fatality rate is similarly high. Unfortunately, a proper record of accidents in ASM is not kept, so an estimate of the actual number of groundfall accidents cannot be accurately developed [5]. Currently miners rely on empirical and observational tools acquired through previous experience to assess groundfall risks. The risks for artisanal miners can tend to be significantly greater than risks for those from the mining industry. This is due to the lack of regulation of ASM, which tends to operate outside the legal framework and the regulations lack of enforcement in force for occupational health and safety regulations.

At the No. 4 Mine of Jim Walter Resources in Tuscaloosa County in the North Central part of the State of Alabama, the Mary Lee and Blue Creek coal beds lay 2000 feet below the surface. The quantity of methane gas stored within the coal bed reservoir at this depth and released during development mining necessitates that each coal producing section be ventilated using large air quantities approaching 100,000 cfm. In order to meet coal contractural commitments in the early stages of mine development by installing the necessary number of continuous mining machine units and to develop the mine to projected air shaft sites, high pressure, large volume mine ventilating fans were required. This presentation discusses the installation start-up and changeover procedures when two size GAF 31.5-28-1 TLT-Babcock 3500 Horsepower fans with adjustable pitch in flight blades were put on line while phasing out two Jeffrey Mining Machine Company 8HUA 117 Fans. A graph will be presented to depict the most economic diameter shaft size under 2000 feet of cover with different air quantity requirements.

The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. The writer presents this material as a resource engineer advising a major bank in mineral matters, so the presentation may relate more to the financial problems of the developer

The natural lives of machines and components vary tremendously! Maintenance managers struggle constantly to maximize their equipment lives while minimizing their maintenance costs, but they normally lack the tools and techniques they need to do this properly. This paper proposes a methodology based on probabilities of failure and expected values for repairs that recognizes the variation among individual machines and components as well as the high costs associated with catastrophic failures. It enables a user to determine the optimum change-out intervals for many types of equipment. The approach proposed here is sophisticated enough to be reliable but simple enough to be applied by the maintenance staff on the shop floor. It will complement existing preventive and predictive maintenance programs.

This United States Bureau of Mines study is based on a review of U.S. mine fire accidents that occurred from 1970 through 1989. Information on these accidents was obtained through investigative reports written by Mine Safety and Health Administration personnel. For this study, 260 mine fire accident reports were examined. A previous Bureau research effort established that fires causing fatalities were more likely to occur in haulage entries than at any other underground location. This study has found that the most prolific source of haulage entry fires was the inadvertent grounding of trolley wires. The largest segment (15 out of 40 trolley wire fires) resulted from not maintaining adequate clearance between the trolley wire and the vehicle. Several novel fire prevention and control ideas have evolved in response to frequently occurring fire-related problems. These included; discriminating power isolation devices, wire cutting devices, more accessible fire extinguishers, vehicle overcurrent protection, and vehicle fire suppression.

"Electric and hydraulic shovels are the dominant loading machinery in surface mining operations. Despite their critical role in production and their high capital and operating costs, no reliable and comprehensive quantitative performance metric is available. In this paper, a stochastic shovel effectiveness (SSE) measure is proposed for the purpose of quantifying the performance effectiveness of these shovels. The SSE is based on the widely used method of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in the manufacturing industry. The OEE measures the performance effectiveness of equipment by multiplying its mechanical availability, utilization and production quality. In manufacturing processes, quality rate is the ratio of the total number of products minus the number of defective products – equivalent to the number of acceptable products – to the total number of products. The SSE similarly uses the mechanical-availability and utilization terms, but instead of quality rate it uses a new parameter named bucket rate.The variability or randomness of the input data, that is, availability, utilization and bucket rate, are further incorporated into the SSE, and a final stochastic SSE distribution is derived in the form of a probability density function. One hydraulic and one electric shovel in a surface mining operation were selected to test the validity of the proposed method. The SSE scores for the two shovels, operating continuously for one year, were derived and compared. As with the OEE, the three-parameter SSE method yielded more representative results for overall performance measurement than a single-parameter approach. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a three-parameter Weibull and a normal distribution were derived for quantifying the overall effectiveness of hydraulic and electric shovels, respectively. As a decision aid, the proposed methodology promises to render a more informative tool than traditional metrics for mine equipment maintenance and management."

With one unified model, they could simulate the behavior of four major vehicle subsystems in wheel loaders and articulated haulers: hydraulics, powertrain, thermal management and the actual driver. Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations related to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 370 to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 170 sulfur.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration process on the concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in an underground mine. Two active regeneration strategies were examined for an electrically regenerated sintered metal fiber filtration system, and the effects were compared with those observed for a muffler and the same system operated in a passive configuration. The effects were assessed for three steady-state engine operating conditions. The number and mass concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in mine air were found to be strongly affected by the exhaust configuration, engine operating conditions and the regeneration process. When the system was operated in active configurations, the concentrations exhibited a transient and cyclic nature. At light load conditions, the distributions of aerosols in mine air were dominated by accumulation mode aerosols for all exhaust configurations and regeneration strategies. High concentrations of nucleation aerosols were observed when the DPF system was used and the engine was operated at high load conditions. A positive correlation between accumulation of particulate matter in the filter and the efficiency of the filter in removing accumulation mode aerosols was observed for all conditions. In the case of high engine load, reductions in accumulation mode aerosol concentrations were linked to a substantial increase in number concentrations of nucleation mode aerosol. Overall, the filtration system was found to be very effective in reducing total aerosol mass and elemental carbon concentrations for all engine operating conditions. However, the system was substantially more effective in passive than in active regeneration configurations.

During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

The condition-based monitoring system is an important innovation for reducing the downtime of costly, heavy earth- moving machinery (HEMM). Vibration severity measurements were made on the HEMM located at the Gevra Project, the largest coal opencast project in India. Whenever the vibration severity levels exceeded the permissible limits, necessary actions were taken to replace the defective parts of the ma- chine. The systematic vibration monitoring of 120-t (132-st) dumpers, followed by corrective measures led to a substantial increase in component life (8.18% for an 445E Dressor and 28.44% for an MK-30 Unit Rig). The associated costs (including spareparts) were reduced by 21.55% and 25.74%, respectively. Because of the reduced downtime, savings for these two dumpers over the period from March 26 to June 25,1998, were of the order of Rs.26.47 (US$0.649) million.

The Jabali zinc deposit, in Yemen, contains at least 9.4 Mt at a grade of 10.7% zinc, 2.2% lead and 77g/t silver. The zinc occurs as smithsonite with minor hydrozincite. The Jabali ore does not produce a zinc concentrate of sufficient grade to be acceptable to conventional smelter/refineries, and it has been necessary to formulate a less conventional development plan. This involves the construction of a mine and concentrator at Jabali and a metal production facility using a new flowsheet designed specifically for the treatment of oxide material, at Yanbu, in Saudi Arabia. In order to give the facility the necessary economies of scale, the Jabali concentrate will be supplemented by feed from other deposits, this may be either oxide or sulphide material. The paper outlines the geology and proposed mining and treatment operations at Jabali, the flowsheet for Yanbu and presents preliminary costs for both operations

The Athabasca tar sands of Alberta are an increasingly important source of crude oil for the North American continent. Published figures indicate estimates of recoverable resources in the tar sands at some 300 billion barrels of synthetic crude of which some 86 billion barrels can be recovered by surface mining techniques. At the present time, two commercial plants are in operation, Great Canadian Oil Sands Limited and Syncrude Canada Ltd. Their present combined capacity is approximately 150,000 barrels per day. Some of the factors which will make this oil expensive will be noted here. The location of the present producing plants is 500 kilometres north of Edmonton at an elevation of approximately 320 metres. Recorded temperatures range from +38 to -55 degrees Celsius. Wind velocities are not high but the chill factor with even a slight breeze and minus 40 degrees is very uncomfortable.

Wireless technology is a hot topic for anyone involved in the design, operation, maintenance or upgrading of mines or mineral processing plants because wireless technologies overcome barriers that have prevented many useful data inputs. Wireless communications can contribute to worker safety, satisfy environmental concerns, support plant security, track human and physical assets, and improve equipment maintenance. The cost structure of wireless is compelling and users can realize savings ? up to 90 percent less installed cost than wired instruments ? since wireless technology eliminates the need for expenses associated with cabling, engineering, construction and documentation. Many applications previously considered too expensive have become economically feasible with wireless. Two examples are continuous monitoring of safety showers to notify operators when one has been activated, and monitoring effluents to ensure environmental regulations are being met. In many cases, wireless transmitters can be installed where wired devices were too expensive to justify, or were not feasible due to physical or technical barriers. Examples include monitoring temperature measurements inside a rotating reactor or monitoring process variables in a tough, corrosive environment too challenging for a wired solution. Wireless also gives operating personnel mobility with the ability to communicate from remote or hard-to-reach zones. According to a recent Venture Development Corp. survey covering radio frequency (RF) of microwave industrial monitoring and control products, these features are contributing to the expected nationwide growth rate for industrial wireless applications of 19 percent annually from 2007 to 2012 (Taylor, 2008). At the same time, mineral producers have many questions about wireless systems including their applicability, reliability and security in this industry. Just what can wireless do? Is it secure and reliable? Can these instruments stand up to the rigors of the industry? Can wire-less technology provide the flexibility needed for mining applications?
