In report the results of performance of research works on building up of the connected geoecological and geomechanical monitoring system for modelling and study of a state of mining massif in a region with large-scale underground mining works are discussed. The connected geoecological monitoring requires radical change of methodology of carried out works. To carry out modelling and researches it is impossible without construction of the integrated connected information model of region. Basis of construction of information systems and databases for all sections of Earth Sciences is the set of the approaches, among which, for example, methods of remote sounding, GIS- and GPS-technology etc. Computer technologies are basis on the "supercomputer" technology. The results of performance of some researches for regions of excavation of deposits of potash salts in Russia and Belarus are presented.

Several bauxite residue sands and muds produced by Bayer plants in the U.S. and overseas have been fractionated using dry and wet magnetic separators. The magnetic sand fractions typically contain about 60 wt% iron and the bulk of the radioactivity in this waste. The muds are more difficult to process than the sands, but some fractionation is possible using a combination of flotation and magnetic separation techniques.

Introduction Inco is the major North American nickel producer. Initially based in Sudbury, Ontario, its past exploration activity was directed toward finding new nickel deposits. New nickel sulfide discoveries outside Sudbury have included Thompson, Manitoba; Shebandowan, Ontario; and Widgiemooltha in Western Australia as well as a host of nickel laterite deposits. The company is currently diversifying into other commodities, including gold. Inco's exploration department participated in uranium discoveries in Saskatchewan and chromite discoveries at Tiebaghi in New Caledonia. In addition, it found new gold deposits at Lupin, Northwest Territories; Crixas, Brazil; Hoyle Township, Ontario; and Casa Berardi in Quebec. Crixas and Casa Berardi are currently being evaluated by underground exploration. Figure 1 shows some Canadian Shield gold locations where Inco is or was an active participant. Base metal developments Base metal exploration in shield areas has been greatly eased by applying scientific studies. Archean nickel sulfide deposits have been found using komatiitic-flow models (Fardon, 1971). Volcanogenic massive sulfide model has been applied to copper-zinc deposits (Sangster and Scott, 1976). Such deposits were subsequently seen developing on the sea floor through black smokers (Spiess, MacDonald, and Atwater, 1980). Sedimentary processes were recognized early as important in ore formation, particularly in the southern hemisphere (King, 1976). And many ore deposits are now regarded as a simple part of the geological column (Stanton, 1960 and 1972). Petrographic work on alteration patterns in and around ore bodies was used to develop standard porphyry copper models (Lowell and Guilbert, 1970). Epithermal models for precious metals followed. Stratigraphic zonation patterns have been formulated for base metal deposits, including keel facies, ore facies, and cap or distal facies. Gold developments The work on base metal deposits naturally spilled over into precious metal exploration when the gold price was allowed to float on world money markets. Early work on elements associated with gold deposits, especially arsenic, tellurium, selenium, and mercury, pioneered more detailed geochemical work (Bagby and Berger, 1985; and Groves, Ho, and Houstoun, 1984). Geochemical patterns have been recognized around microfine gold deposits. And the study of gold precipitation patterns in modern geothermal systems has helped understand gold deposition. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, it was noticed that numerous Archean banded iron formations contained anomalous gold values. From this and other observations, the syngenetic exhalite gold model has developed. Gold deposits also occur along shears in some plutons such as the Belmoral mine in Quebec. This indicates the importance of epigenetic processes in ore formation. Shield ore settings Initial studies recognized that the major gold camps in the Canadian Shield were mostly in greenstone belts and found along "breaks," especially zones of faulting and sedimentation. Gill (1948) wrote, "Only recently, as a result of detailed mapping, has the importance of major schist zones such as the Larder Lake, Cadillac, Porcupine Creek, and Destor Breaks been recognized. These zones of persistent adjustment mark broad belts favorable for ore occurrence." The importance of shearing in ore location and regional greenstone stratigraphic position close to late sedimentary packages was clearly understood. And structural models have been further developed for some Canadian ore deposits (Hubert, Trudel, and Gelinas, 1984). In the Beardmore-Geraldton camp of northwest Ontario, the importance was soon recognized of fold noses in banded iron formation, as localizers for gold ore. The Woodbury L-73 Tunnel involved the design and construction of a 96-inch tunnel driven through 8,080 lf of very difficult ground conditions. Anticipated ground and groundwater conditions consisted of potentially flowing silty sand with cobbles and boulders, mixed face of sand and sandstone and full face of the St. Peter Sandstone. Actual conditions were similar, although the quantities did change from bid quantities. This paper presents the approach used for development of the GBR regarding risk management. The means of arriving at a fair compensation for variances from the baseline values to address the actual encountered tunneling behavior of the soil, boulder count and its effect on production rates are presented.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica surfaces immersed in solutions of hydrolysable cations and/or sodium oleate. Hydrophobic forces were observed at the pH range where the concentration of the singly-charged hydroxo-complexes (CaOH+ or MgOH+) in solution is the highest. In the absence of oleate, the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes was indicated by the disappearance of the repulsive hydration force. These results suggest that the hydrolysable cations adsorb on silica as singly-charged hydroxo-complexes. Based on the results obtained in the present work, a model for the adsorption of hydrolysable cations has been developed.

Introduction Joints often have profound effects on elastic properties and strength of rock masses and therefore on rock slope stability. In surface mine slopes, joints are usually too numerous to be taken into account individually, so an equivalent properties approach is necessary. Previous work that treats a jointed rock mass as an equivalent composite material of joints and intact rock between resulted in excellent agreement between estimated and true rock mass elastic moduli in case of fully persistent joints (e.g., Pariseau, 1999) Rock mass failure mechanisms on joints and through intact rock were retained obviating the need for an equivalent rock mass strength. Impersistent joints, which are not continuous on a joint plane, can be accommodated (Pariseau, 2003). However, slope stability analysis of a large, deep copper mine indicated a need for computational efficiency even in two-dimensional analysis of vertical sections through pit walls (Puri, 2006). The analyses by the popular finite element method used small elements of bench size near the pit slopes and much larger elements away from the pit walls. The reasons for the graded meshes were numerical quality (small elements) and computational economy (large elements). Small elements contained only a few joints, while the larger elements contained hundreds of joints and led to impractical computation run times (days!). A new modeling procedure that recognizes sufficiently large elements as representative volume elements (REV’s) overcomes this obstacle. A companion improvement recognizes the concept of a representative area element (RAE) in association with joint impersistence and the probability that joint material occupies a considered site. Both are steps towards greater model realism and a practical slope stability analysis procedure. Consider the open pit mine photo shown in Figure 1(a), a companion plan view in Figure 1(b), and the problem of slope stability where high slope angles favor economics but low slope angles favor safety. These competing factors in surface mining generally result in some sections of the mine that have unstable slopes that require monitoring and perhaps mitigating action to improve stability. Although stability of a given section may not be easy to quantify with a single number, useful design guidance can be obtained from a finite element analysis of a proposed mining sequence leading to future pit slopes and profiles. The presence of water from rain and snow melt indicates a need for a coupled analysis that links water pressure, effective stress and total stress (Schmelter, 2001).

The processes of magnetic separation and cyclone classification are common in the mineral processing industry, and frequently the two are found in consecutive stages in the beneficiation of a magnetic mineral ore. The application of a magnetic field across the cyclone, to combine the two stages in treating a magnetic mineral pulp, has been investigated with a view to possible practical applications in the mineral industry The results of this research reveal that magnetic particles can be manipulated within the cyclone body by the application of a magnetic field, and that magnetic grades may be significantly upgraded with recoveries in excess of 90%.

Preliminary design is underway for a new Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) project that will ensure one of America’s most reliable water systems by providing continued, reliable water service to existing and future customers. The Horizon Lateral is a $1.6 billion water transmission pipeline that includes 7–10 miles of 108-inch finished diameter rock and soft-ground tunnels. The tunnels will traverse volcanic rock in or around the McCullough Mountain Range and the surrounding alluvial basin. The tunneling community will find relevance in hearing about this critical infrastructure project from a leading wholesale water utility owner with a proven track record for on-time, collaborative projects.

Overcasts are indispensible ventilation control devices to permit one airway to pass over another without mixing in room and pillar coal mining. The airflow distribution inside the overcast depends on its spe-cific configuration at which the flow enters into it. This study uses 3D numerical simulation to examine the pressure and velocity distributions inside an overcast. The effects of the overcast angle on the flow field are also examined. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and isothermal and the standard k-e model is utilized. Simulated results display flow separation and recirculation regions of different sizes occurring not only upstream and downstream from the overcast but also inside it. The results also show that the size of the recirculation regions in-creased with the increase in the angle before and after the overcast influencing significantly the flow field and pressure losses. The stream-lines are plotted to show the 3D structure of the flow field. The results from the simulation can guide overcast design commonly used in un-derground coal mines. This paper addresses the challenges of designing the underpinning of major sub-way station with 4 operating tracks. No. 7 subway extension crosses under the existing 42nd street subway station on the 8th Avenue line. Understanding the history of the original construction, of the current structures and their condition were instrumental in developing a feasible underpinning design that is integrated with the design of the new tunnels. The existing 8th Avenue subway station has a lower abandoned level. Several alignments and corresponding underpinning schemes were studied. The design allows new tunnel construction under the station without interruption of station operations.

The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

CO2 emissions from carbonate laden reclaimed mine spoil has been shown to pose a hazard to residents in homes built on or adjacent to such land. The objective of this project was to develop a soil CO2 flux survey protocol for assessing reclaimed mine land. The research involved CO2 chamber accumulation flux surveys; stable carbon isotope ratio analysis; statistical hypothesis testing to examine correlation between CO2 flux and soil temperature and moisture as well as spatial dependence; and geostatistics to map CO2 and delineate high flux zones. Soil temperature was observed to have a positive correlation with fluxes while soil moisture was observed to be negatively correlated. Spatial dependence of CO2 fluxes on reclaimed mine land was observed on one of the two study sites. The research suggests that macro-porosity and gas permeability may be important factors that explain CO2 migration in mine spoil. A flux survey protocol has been developed, based on these results, for reclaimed mine lands. The work demonstrates the capability of geostatistical methods to delineate high flux fields. Further research will be required to determine suitable thresholds for such analysis.

The Manapouri Power Station is an underground hydro-electric station located in the South Island of New Zealand, and was constructed in the 1960s. Between 1997and 2002, a second 10m diameter tailrace tunnel was constructed to increase the out-put and to improve the overall hydraulic efficiency and output of the station. A critical economic and project approval consideration for the second tunnel was the outage time required for the breakthrough into the power station. The power station is in part dedicated to providing power to an aluminum smelter with the balance to the National Grid, and apart from the physical problems associated with providing an alter-native power supply to the smelter, the loss of generation revenue and supply risk were significant issues. Innovative planning reduced the planned outage time from several months to21 days, and the breakthrough was eventually achieved in 11 days as a result of additional value engineering measures implemented during construction. This paper describes the engineering optimization that took place during the planning stages of the project and later during construction, as well as describing the construction methodology used.

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. Uravan, Ambrosia Lake, Gas Hills and South Texas are all historic names in US uranium. These mining areas supplied the uranium that brought the United States into the nuclear age during the 1960s, and fueled the birth of nuclear energy for peaceful uses — a promise of nearly limitless, clean energy for the world’s future. That promise still exists today, but it is hard to hear over the rhetoric of environmental activists and politicians. Nuclear power offers dependable electricity with limited environmental impact at stable prices. Nuclear power releases no greenhouse gases or particulate matter into the atmosphere. High level nuclear waste (HLW), although long lived, is readily controlled and compact. In the United States, generating 1 billion kWh of electricity with coal produces 47 kt (52,000 st) of solid waste (ash and sludge), compared to 3.6 t (4 st) of HLW produced by nuclear.

Initial investment for mechanical boring of tunnels is found to be high in most cases. Conventional drilling and blasting is not the possible especially in urban area. In these conditions impact hammer offers many advantages over conventional drill and blast techniques and boring tunnels. These include improved safety, minimal ground disturbances, elimination of blast vibration, reduced ventilation requirements, reduced cost etc. Therefore, hydraulic impact hammers have been used widely in metro tunnelling projects in Istanbul since 1992. Accumulated and published data from various tunnelling projects serve to improve predicting the machine performance and scheduling of job duration. This paper is prepared under this objective. Machine utilization time of impact hammer was evaluated in this study. The main rock formation named Kartal formation arepaleozoic aged sedimentary rocks, shale, sandstone, siltstone, andesite dykes and sediment fillings. The first stage of the project is commissioned to Yapi Merkezi- Yuksel- Dogus- Yenigun- Belen consortium.

Exploration budgets are commonly determined by "rules of thumb" such as a percentage of earnings or other fiscal measure. An appropriate exploration budget is the amount needed to achieve the goals of the company. It can be determined by discounting the income expected from achieved goals. Budgets for individual projects are determined in a similar manner except that risk of failure is included in the computation.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

In the past 100 years in the mining industry, many references are made to the "Widow Makers", 'Miners Con" and many other derogatory names related to physical hazards. They reflect the lack of understanding of the problem facing the early day miner. Workers were enticed, in some cases, to take a chance against a medical question mark that could not be explained by the doctors of those early days. The optimism of the mining man and the challenge of work led him to believe that the physical results could not apply to himself and only applied to some of his fellow workers. Much of the time, to his dismay, he found that he had lost to the game of chance. As medical knowledge improved and mining management began to understand the effects of conditions in the mines and beneficiation plants, steps were taken to alleviate or eliminate the health hazards that were present, The organizations engaged in mining that did not take an active interest in employee health found themselves to eventually be placed in the position of being forced to take action by Federal and State legislation. We find ourselves in the 1970's on the threshold of a new era where the general public is concerned vociferously about "their" environment and the industry feels the governmental controls more strongly than ever before. It can be said that in the past 100 years we have advanced from the "Widow Makers" of the 1870's to the "Retirement Makers" of today. The difficulties of the early days in underground mining were of times compounded in the beneficiation plants above ground. As late as the 1950's some crushing and milling installations in the United States were operating under environmental conditions that complied to the then existing legislation but were below the health level sought by conscientious management. The Mission Concentrator Crushing Plant was designed in 1959 and placed in operation in July, 1961.
