In 2005, NIOSH and Badger Mining Corporation entered a partnership to implement ergonomic interventions, including a systematic process, to address exposures to risk factors that may result in musculoskeletal disorders or other types of injuries/illnesses. As a result of this partnership, an ergonomics process was integrated with the existing safety and health program to promote an on-going application of ergonomic principles, and over 40 task-specific interventions were implemented during the first year of the process. This paper presents details of the process integration, and several examples of task-specific interventions that reduced exposures to risk factors.

Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

The influence of bacterial growth phase on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The microflotation tests were conducted for malachite (45?53 µm) using different amounts (bulk phase concentration=1×108?5×109 cells/mL) of Rhodococcus opacus (R. opacus) as a collector, which was grown at mid-exponential versus stationary phase, at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (6), and malachite-bacteria interaction and flotation time (each 10 min). Hug differences between R. opacus cells in mid-exponential and stationary phase was observed from the results for electrophoretic mobility and flotation tests. Specifically, the isoelectric point of the cells in the stationary phase was lower than that in the mid-exponential phase, suggesting that the amount and distribution of surface functional groups onto cell surfaces are likely different. Additionally, the cells in stationary phase led to significant increase in the flotability compared to those in mid-exponential phase over the background bacterial concentration level of 1×108?5×109 cells/mL. Furthermore, the flotation efficiency tended to increase with increasing cell dosage for stationary phase cells while no distinct difference was observed for mid-exponential cells.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. The hydrometallurgical residue generated during the hydrometallurgical processing of waste automotive catalysts is valuable as a secondary resource. In this study, a process of platinum recovery from the hydrometallurgical residue by high-temperature smelting process was proposed. Results of lab- and pilot-scale experiments show a high recovery of more than 98% of platinum and glass slag was successfully obtained by controlling the Fe3O4 addition, C/Fe3O4 mass ratio, CaO/SiO2 mass ratio, smelting temperature, and holding time at 15 wt%, 0.4, 0.6, 1500 °C, and 120 or 60 min, respectively. Results from the pilot-scale show that the platinum contents in the glass slag and alloys were less than 4 g/t and more than 0.6 wt%, respectively. Therefore, the process proposed in this study is a prospective and effective approach for reutilization of hydrometallurgical residue containing platinum.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today's highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada's mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. "The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 (PL 109-236, 2006) established the Office of Mine Safety and Health, functioning as the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and provided authority for awarding contracts related to the development and implementation of new mine technology and equipment. The OMSHR external contracts program was formed in accordance with the MINER Act and has since issued more than 150 contracts focused on worker health and safety. Initial funding for this program was provided by the United States Congress through two emergency supplemental appropriations and was focused on emergency oxygen supply, communications and tracking, and refuge chambers (also referred to as refuge alternatives). Since the MINER Act, Congress has continued to fund the program through the annual NIOSH mining appropriation. The program was supplemented starting in 2009 with an academic capacity building program directed toward developing university tenure-track faculty and facilities and supporting graduate students in the area of mine ventilation. Ground control was added as an additional focus area in 2011. A short synopsis of each contract is published on the NIOSH Mining website (www.cdc.gov/niosh/ mining/researchprogram/contracts/index.html) and final reports are available in digital form on request. Under the BAA several problem areas are described and the offeror develops the scope of work and deliverables for the proposed research. An IAA is very similar to an RFP except it is a contract between two federal government agencies."

Today, with a stringent economic and environmental climate prevailing in the copper business, there is increased interest in evaluating new processing alternatives for production. Hydrometallurgical pressure oxidation of copper concentrates is one of the more viable approaches and several technological candidates have emerged. Of these, an overlooked but, ironically the first industrially proven methodology, utilized nitrogen species catalyzation in the oxidizing pressure leach system to produce copper via SX/EW. Given its many inherent process advantages, this may prove to be a feasible process alternative for the future. In this paper, the history of the system and its application to copper concentrates and ores will be outlined. In particular, a novel methodology for effective recovery of precious metals from chalcopyrite concentrates will be discussed. Finally, the perceived economics of chalcopyrite concentrate treatment with this unique industrially proven process will be delineated.

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

This study provides an effective determination process of the interface microstructural parameters in the numerical modelling of the mechanical interaction between two different geomaterials involved with frictional-bonded interfaces, such as the interaction between backfill columns and the surrounding rocks, or the soil-structure interaction, by using the coupled finite-difference and discrete-element (FD-DE) method. Three-dimensional numerical direct shear tests were conducted on the coupled FD-DE model of the combined rock-cemented rockfill (R-CRF) specimens with the frictional-bonded interface. With the microstructural parameters determined, the macro-mechanical properties of the interface of the coupled model were calibrated to well fit with the theoretical values of the combined specimen under the direct shear condition assumed according to the Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. Evident elastoplastic shear behaviour was observed on the interfaces, and excellent agreement was attained between the shapes of the theoretical and simulated shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models at different servo-controlled normal stresses. Particulate-scale force chains inside the DE model of the CRF specimen were highly consistent with the force contour on the FD model of the rock specimen, demonstrating the shear stress evolution of the coupled model at different shear displacements. Parametric studies verified the effects of the deformation properties of the interface parallel bonds on the shape of shear stress-displacement curves of the coupled models. The test results validated the feasibility and rationality of the coupled FD-DE method for modelling the combined specimens with frictional-bonded interfaces or joints. Furthermore, this study provides valuable numerical modelling experience for investigating the shear behaviour at the interface between cemented backfill columns and surrounding walls by using the coupled FD-DE method.

Contract Incentives have long been employed in the underground hardrock industry as a tool to influence employee performance, enhance productivity, and control labor costs. While traditionally structured to establish a direct correlation between performance and compensation, many contract programs have evolved into elaborate systems that promote strategies often viewed as independent of productivity. This paper presents the findings of research into these contract incentives and was conducted with the cooperation of 33 mines utilizing a spectrum of employee compensation and incentive programs. Emphasis of this analysis focuses on the types of production contracts observed and their role with respect to employee earnings.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer (BWOAS) consists of 4,000m (13,200 ft) of 3.66m (12 ft)diameter tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. The project involves many new innovations, including: Slurry wall work shaft with excavation below the water table; Hybrid universal rings combining traditional steel reinforcement with fibers; New, full EPB Lovat TBM; Two component grout system pumped to the TBM from the surface; and, Linabond corrosion protection liner. The paper looks at the planning approach adopted to meet the various challenges presented, combined with an overview of progress to date.

The Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM)/Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) joint venture has been engaged by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to provide engineering ser-vices in connection with the replacement of two existing siphons which cross New York Harbor between Staten Island and Brooklyn. The project involves the construction of a 72-inch diameter pipeline within a 12-foot diameter tunnel beneath the New York Harbor. The tunnel will be constructed using either slurry or an earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper presents the results of an extensive geotechnical field and laboratory testing program including advanced frozen soil tests (uniaxial compressive strength tests, triaxial tests, and uniaxial creep tests), in-situ vane shear and pressure meter testing, and a marine geophysical survey (seismic reflection technique) to ascertain the complex subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment and shaft locations. The paper will also discuss the design and construction aspects and the challenges associated with each component of this project.

The coal mining cost models described in this paper represent a computerized estimating procedure for analyzing mining costs and requirements of proposed coal mining projects. Both surface and underground mining analyses can be conducted through the use of these models. These models were developed by the NUS Corporation for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The methodology design of the cost models follows a process engineering approach for determining mining requirements and costs similar to the logic typically employed in preliminary mine feasibility studies. All capital and operating costs associated with a new coal mining project are thereby estimated. The results of these analyses are then entered into a financial analysis framework which computes annual cash flow summaries, utilizing a profit and loss statement approach, to solve for either the coal value/ton (minimum required selling price) or the rate of return on equity for the project. The coal value/ton is also referred to as the economic cost of production (F .O . B. mine, including preparation).

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The forestry reclamation approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22 m (4 ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes (i.e., greater than 23°) could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA) sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. For efficient management of operations, mining companies are required to be able to predict potential scenarios for main market factors. Competitive advantage and value creation are established through managing the value chain well. The mining value chain is usually faced with challenges from various shifts in commodity markets as well as ongoing uncertainties. Therefore, there is a need for accurate analysis of data from the markets, for the prediction of commodities, for instance, Precious Group Metals (PGM). The main objective of this research work is to apply machine learning methodologies with the aim to identify patterns and trends in the Precious Group Metals, and thereafter analyze and predict the future trends of these markets. Numerous machine learning models are applied to a dataset consisting of 15 years of daily price for eight precious metals namely Platinum, Palladium, Rhodium, Ruthenium, Osmium, Indium, Silver, and Gold. The results reveal the patterns and trends within the data sets and that different machine learning methods could be suited for the prediction of market prices for each of the PGMs. The application of an amalgamation of various machine learning methods may result in more accurate predictions of the PGM markets. Accurate prediction of market prices for PGMs will possibly result in unlocking untapped sources of value in the mining industry.

Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.
