Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. With mine activity dating back to 1792, the Lehigh Valley, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the historic Allentown/Bethlehem steel mills and about 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Philadelphia, PA, defined early-day coal mining. Coal mining began just nine years after the end of America?s Revolutionary War. The high-carbon, clean-burning anthracite coal that was hand-dug from the Pennsylvania hills fueled the steam engines that powered the Industrial Revolution, helping build early steam ships and even the first automobiles. Around 1910, at the peak of the U.S.?s early mining effort, there were more than 250,000 men working underground ? 10,000 of them in the Lehigh Valley.

When a company like Lonmin, the third largest platinum producer in the world, is mining one of the most precious metals in the world, time is money. Every piece of equipment is expected to be in top shape because every minute of downtime can add up to lost profit. Two different types of platinum ore are mined and processed by Lonmin, namely Merensky and UG2. Merensky has a grade of 3.5 g/t (0.1 oz/st) and UG2 has a grade of 4.5 g/t (0.13 oz/st). The mine also produces platinum group metals (PGM), which consist of platinum, osmium, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium. Although South Africa has more than 80 percent of the world?s PGM reserves, these minerals are very scarce. Lonmin is considered a low-cost producer of these minerals, generating 21.5 t (694,000 oz) of platinum and 18.6 t (600,000 oz) of PGMs in 2012. So when the company?s Karee K3 concentrator plant in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa, was experiencing high operating costs on the transfer points, a solution was needed.

Tunnel segmental lining design constitutes a significant iterative process where modeling and numerical analysis are factors in deciding the number of segments, their dimensions, gasket placements, as well as the locations of dowels and bolts. Consequently, these modifications lead to revisions in the final drawing details. However, the current tunnel engineering practices lack systematic solutions that effectively bridge the gap between the iterative design process and efficient visualization of completed drawings due to the time- consuming nature of redrawing. This paper presents a pioneering application of AI-driven solutions including using Autodesk's API, for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) Project. It showcases the automation of drawing design and the real-time visualization of modifications, thereby streamlining the drawing process.

The Cannon mine, located in north-central Washington is mining gold hosted in silicified Eocene-age arkosic sediments arrayed along a regional strike-slip fault system. Branches of the Eagle Creek fault have broken the Chumstick Formation into blocks and wedges, and have caused intense deformation of stratigraphy in the mine. Mineralization at the Cannon mine (B-Reef) and O-Reef (L-O mine) is a bulk silicification with high grade cross-cutting veins containing principally electrum, silver sulfosalts and pyrite in a gangue of quartz, adularia and calcite. Orebodies have very irregular shapes, but tend to follow stratigraphy and high-angle pre-mineral fault breccias and splays developed adjacent to the major faults. Both B-Reef and O-Reef occur at significant bends in the regional trend of major fault strands. Mean gold grades decrease upward from near sea level to the 300 m elevation at the Cannon mine. A new discovery, the A-Reef is hosted by a moderately dipping structure which is at a low angle to bedding. Fluid inclusion studies of B-Reef ore zones indicate dilute ore-bearing fluids boiled at temperatures between 185 and 2850 C at a depth of 1 km. Many ore zones are bounded by sheared mudstone and claystone and a much broader halo of argillic alteration comprising illite, smectite and sericite. Trace and major element analysis by ICP-ES for 33 elements, LECO for S, Hg by CVAA and gold by AA-FA shows dispersion patterns hundreds of meters outward from the known orebodies in the Cannon mine. Geometric mean comparisons, hierarchical R-mode cluster analysis and single element spatial plots show that Hg, As, Sb, S and K/Al compose a suite of elements which are significantly dispersed away from, and increase toward mineralization. Ba, Ca, Na, Mn, V and Zr decrease toward mineralization. The suite is more selective than gold with respect to known mineralization within the exploration area.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

Traditionally, fuel oil or diesel was the collector of choice in coal flotation, but in recent years these materials have come under increased scrutiny because of concerns about the toxicity of some components. In response to these concerns, Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC has commercialized a patent pending coal collector (Talon® 9400 reagent) that is 100% derived from the pulping of trees. This study presents a comparison of yields and recoveries for different coal collectors, including the one derived from the pulping of trees.

Functional Description Figure 1 is a typical flowsheet for a system for solid fuel addition to filter cake. Solid fuel, coal, coal breeze, or charcoal, is fed from a,stockpile to a surge hopper. The solid fuel is metered into a grinding mill. The fuel is dried and ground in a grinding mill. The on-size particles are removed from the mill by air sweeping. The ground solid fuel is separated from the air stream by a cyclone and stored in a surge hopper. The ground solid fuel is then pneumatically conveyed to a small hopper in the balling area. The fuel is proportioned into the filter cake just prior to mixing. An efficient mixer is very important to have a successful operation. The exact flowsheet would depend on a number of factors including what fuel is used, how the fuel is received, and the cnaracteristics of the fuel as received. Availability of floor space in the plant may also affect the flowsheet. For example, drying air may be supplied from the pellet furnace if the grinding mill can be located near the grate, or the pneumatic conveying system and a surge hopper may be eliminated by placing the grinding mill adjacent .to the mixing area. Also, for a multiple line plant, a ball mill rather than a roller mill may be more suitable.

On July 13, 1967 the San Bernardino County Planning Commission approved publicly a request by American Smelting and Refining Company for a zone variance to conduct a silver mining and milling operation in the Calico district, southern California, Coincidentally, on July 14 the U.S. Treasury halted its sales of silver, and the U.S. free market price quoted rose immediately from $1.30 to $1.77 per ounce. In its request to the commission Asarco stated that about 13,500 to 15,000 tons of rock would be moved daily by surface mining, including 7,000 tons of ore. The ore would be crushed to minus three-quarters inches and the silver recovered "by a chemical process." The grade of the ore was not given, but the company said that it might also recover barite as a byproduct, The operation would employ 150-160 people. Additional activity in the district includes exploration programs by Superior Oil Company and Calico Silver Mines, Ltd. History and production: In retrospect, as the price of silver began to rise in 1961 from 91 cents an ounce, and as Asarco began its exploration program in late 1964, a new era for an old bonanza silver district would seem to have begun. The Calico district has been mined for silver only on a very, very small scale since 1882 to 1896, when an estimated $12 to $20 million (perhaps 15 to 20 million troy ounces) of that metal was produced from the 50-odd mines of the district and vicinity. These mines include the Silver King, Oriental, Waterloo, Garfield, Odessa and Waterman (which is about 8 miles west of the district). Much smaller-valued amounts of barite, gold, lead, and copper also have been produced from the ore deposits of the district; and from 1884 to 1907 the region yielded about $9 million worth of borate minerals.

ABSTRACT It has been suggested that effective disaster prevention and response in mining requires that elements of emergency management be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making, much in the same way that the industry approaches routine risk management. Since Congress passed the MINER Act in 2006, the newly mandated structural and technological advancements in mine emergency response preparation have been made and are apparent, but measureable improvement in mineworker emergency preparedness is difficult to ascertain. To begin exploring whether measurable indicators of mine workforce preparedness can or should be addressed within a risk management framework, NIOSH researchers examined the datasets from two separate research efforts—one which measured the organizational safety climate and self-reported safety performance, and the other which measured individuals’ perceptions of their own self-escape competency. INTRODUCTION In response to the mine disasters in 2006, the United States Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act), which strengthened existing regulations [30 CFR, Part 48] and introduced new provisions to improve mine emergency response. Since that time, new technological and structural features, such as mandated redundant communication systems, personnel tracking systems, and lifelines in primary and secondary escapeways, have been installed in underground coal mines across the country. Additionally, mine operators are required to develop emergency response plans, provide adequate supplies of breathable air throughout the mine, provide more frequent and realistic expectations training, and are required to immediately notify the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in the event of an accident. While the structural and technological advancements in emergency preparedness are readily observable and easily measured, levels of individual mineworker preparedness remain difficult to assess. There is a general consensus that deficiencies in competence in the non-routine tasks required for individual miners to effectively respond to a mine emergency likely remain (e.g., National Research Council [NRC], 2013), and NIOSH research continues address this concern (Haas, et al., 2015; Hoebbel et al., 2018). To maximize an operation’s capacity to effectively prevent disasters and/or respond to emergency events, it has been suggested that individual and emergency management efforts be incorporated into everyday operations, planning, and decision-making in much the same way organizations manage routine risks to health and safety (Haddow et al., 2017). To the authors’ knowledge, the mindful intersection of routine risk management policies and practices and emergency prevention and response readiness have yet to be empirically studied within the mining industry.

New erosion, corrosion resistant metal, ceramic, and polymer composite technologies are being developed and marketed by Alanx Products L.P. for use in hydrocyclones, pumps, valves, and other applications in mining and minerals processing. This paper will present an overview of the ceramic/metal composite material system and properties developed, which include excellent erosion/ corrosion resistance. Wear data will be shown from a variety of laboratory tests in dry and wet conditions, in aqueous neutral and corrosive environments. Comparisons will be made with a variety of competitive materials currently used in the industries sited. Data will also be presented on field tests with pumps and hydrocyclones in hard rock mining and other abrasive/corrosive environments. Field data from North and South America, as well as Australian mining applications will be highlighted.

In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Geogrids can be used as surface control on both the roof and rib in underground mines to prevent the fall of small pieces of rock and material from between the primary supports. The use of screen material such as geogrid can significantly reduce the number of ground fall injuries caused by these small rock falls. Because of the potential for reducing injuries through the use of screen, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted tests on screen materials including geogrid to determine their support characteristics and identify parameters that can affect their performance with respect to maintaining broken or failed rock. A specially designed test frame installed in the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) has been used to evaluate the load and stiffness characteristics of the screen material. Two types of geogrids with various designs have been tested-a polyester yarn and a polypropylene grid. The load-displacement characteristics of these grids were determined and the load capacity and stiffness were calculated through 20in of displacement. The load capacity and stiffness of the geogrid in general are shown to be related to the ultimate tensile strength of the screen material.

As a cheap, renewable and non-toxic material, starch can contribute to the sustainability of the flotation process, albeit in a minor way as one type of reagent in systems involving materials with far greater impact. But the physical and chemical versatility of starch can help address another issue, namely, that of processing complex ores with decreasing grades of valuable minerals and increasing mixtures of gangue. This paper compares the results of two lab scale flotation studies where starches (native wheat starch (NWS), dextrin and two oxidised wheat starches) were used to depress two common gangue minerals, copper-activated pyrite and carbon (graphite), over a range of dosages. The oxidised starch with the larger molecular weight structures depressed copper-activated pyrite best, and the oxidised starch with lower molecular weight structures was better at depressing graphite. In both cases, the oxidised starches allowed greater recovery of chalcopyrite, pointing to selectivity potential. The extent to which the carbonyl and carboxyl moieties of the oxidised starches contribute to depressant performance is difficult to quantify, but it should not be discounted. Importantly, the results demonstrate relatively simple modifications of native starch by oxidation can yield structures suitable for depressing gangue minerals with diverse surface properties. The challenge remaining for greater application of modified starch depressants is being able to replicate the desired structures at scale in cold-water-soluble form.

In this study, the effect of colemanite and calcined colemanite (CC) addition on the properties of iron ore pellets is studied. The pellets are prepared in a lab without and with 0.2% colemanite and varying amounts of CC from 0 to 1.0 wt%in steps of 0.2%. A reference pellet is prepared under typical plant conditions, and the properties of the reference pellet are considered as the base value for improving the cold compressive strength (CCS) while maintaining the other parameters at an acceptable limit without altering the pellet. The study also aims to provide a detailed characterization of colemanite and calcined colemanite to better understand their behaviour during firing. The lab-scale results show that the CCS of pellets made with 0.2% colemanite was reduced by 222 points (60%) as compared to the reference pellets due to crack formation during firing. The results show an improvement in the CCS of the indurated pellets with CC dosage up to 0.4%, and decreasing strength is noted thereafter. It is observed that the swelling index increases with the increase in calcined colemanite dosage. To simulate plant conditions, reference pellets and pellets with optimized CC dosage were fired in a plant furnace.

Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Previous analyses of small samples of mining projects have found that feasibility studies tend to well under-estimate the actual capital costs of the project. Our review of 63 mining and smelting projects completed over 4 decades confirms that as-built capital costs are, on average, 25% higher than as estimated at the bankable feasibility study stage. There appears to be little attenuation over time of this bias in capital cost estimation, at first appearing to reflect an absence of learning on the part of the consulting engineer. We instead argue that this persistence of bias is intentional, driven by a scarcity of project financing and the need to inflate the project economics in a bid to secure financing. Around this intentional bias is a considerable amount of scatter. Roughly half of all projects’ as-built capita costs fall outside of the expected ±15% of the feasibility study capital cost estimate, even after allowing for intentional estimation bias. Cost overruns of 100% or more happen in roughly 1 out of 13 projects. The data reveal that a shifted lognormal probability distribution should be used when modeling mining project capital costs in a Monte Carlo analysis.

Many changes have taken place in the "World Cement Market" since Joseph Aspdin discovered portland cement in the early 1800's. At the turn of the century, production of cement world wide was a few million tons; today, it is over one billion tons. By 1995, world production is estimated to reach 1.2 billion tons. Cement processing has changed from inefficient, small vertical kilns to large efficient, precalcining kilns, and large automated crushing, blending and grinding systems. Consequently the cost of production has declined in real terms, resulting in significant economic benefits to the general public. In addition, quality and uniformity of cement have increased, strengths have increased, and at least 25% fewer pounds of cement are needed for each cubic yard of concrete. Today, cement moves thousands of miles on the inland rivers and great lakes of the U. S., across Siberia and across the oceans of the world. The volume of cement moving more than a few hundred miles is almost 100 million tons, or 10% of world production. Today, on a per ton basis, it costs no more to move 40,000 tons of cement to the United States from the Western Pacific rim or from Europe than it does to truck cement 200 miles. For example, cement shipped by water from Spain costs $5.00 to $7.00 per ton compared to cement shipped by truck 200 miles at $16.00 per ton. This low cost water transportation has been a major factor for the increased movement of cement between countries.
