This paper is focused on the development of iridium(IV)-specific quaternary diammonium cations containing electron-donating substituents in the benzyl group of methyl and electron-withdrawing substituents such as triflouromethyl and nitro groups. Quaternary diammonium cations used were tetra- 4-methylbenzyl-1,10-diammonium decane chloride (QuatDMDAMeBnz), tetrabenzyl-1,10- diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDABnz), tetra-3-trifluoromethylbenzyl-1,10- diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDACF3Bnz) and tetra-4-nitrobenzyl-1,10-diammoniumdecane chloride (QuatDMDANO2Bnz). Polyvinylbenzylchloride (PVBC) nanofibres were used as support material, and the functionalised nanofibres were used for separation of Ir(IV) from Rh(III). The sorbent materials were characterised by FTIR and elemental analysis. The efficiency of the quaternary diammonium cations was investigated in a column study under dynamic flow adsorption conditions. Column sorption of [IrCl6]2- and [RhCl5(H2O)]2- on nanofibres functionalised with diammonium cations showed [RhCl5(H2O)]2- was not adsorbed by the sorbent materials while [IrCl6]2- was loaded onto the column. The loading capacities of [IrCl6]2- on the quaternary diammonium sorbent materials increased in the order of F-QuatDMDAMeBnz (3.08 mg/g) < F-QuatDMDABnz (3.39 mg/g) < FQuatDMDACF3Bnz (5.46 mg/g) < F-QuatDMDANO2Bnz (7.10 mg/g). The loading capacity for Ir(IV) with quaternary diammonium cationic nanofibres increased with an increase in the electron-withdrawing nature of the substituent on the quaternising group. The charge delocalising ability of the 4-nitrobenzyl group resulted in the best interaction of the decamethylene diammonium cation with [IrCl6]2-. Selective flotation to separate copper minerals from, for example, Mo- and/or As-bearing minerals is a continuing problem because the selectivity of current systems is imperfect. Selective Cu-As flotation is currently difficult, and the most common Cu-Mo selective flotation method uses NaHS; this must be done in an enclosed system because, under acidic conditions, this method produces hydrogen sulfide. In this paper, some novel alternative flotation processes that use redox reactions are discussed; these methods have a much lower environmental impact. Oxidation and reduction reactions can be used to make copper minerals more hydrophilic and Mo-bearing minerals more hydrophobic. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that the copper minerals became hydrophilic because hydrophilic iron precipitated and several hydroxides covered the copper minerals’ surfaces, whereas the molybdenum minerals remained hydrophobic because their sulfide surfaces were not covered. Flotation experiments on these minerals after redox treatments indicated that excellent separation of Cu-minerals from Mo-minerals can be achieved. Possible mechanisms for this separation were investigated using detailed surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations. The additives used to initiate the redox reactions are easy to handle and make these new flotation procedures better than current processes because the new methods do not emit effluent gas and because they are commercially viable. Excavations in rock are commonly supported with wire mesh, shotcrete, wire mesh and shotcrete in combination, and shotcrete reinforced with various types of fibres. Wire rope lacing and various types of straps are additional forms of support installed over the above types, to cope with severe conditions. These support systems are very important items of ?membrane? rock support. With the recent development of several types of thin sprayed linings, the importance of membrane support is likely to increase in the future. In this paper, a wide range of mechanisms of membrane behaviour and mechanisms of loading of membranes, is described. The concepts of membrane components, which are single membranes that may be used on their own as rock support, and membrane systems, which are combinations of more than one membrane component, are introduced. Different situations have different requirements of membrane support, and differences between civil engineering and mining requirements are highlighted. With the different basic requirements in these two areas, the requirements of rock support are correspondingly different. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of behaviour of the different types of membranes, and the different mechanisms by which the membranes are loaded, is essential before a selection of appropriate support can be made, before appropriate design methods and calculations can be determined, and before appropriate performance test methods for membranes can be defined. The material in this paper contributes towards the understanding of membrane support behaviour.

Effective pyrometallurgical process vessel design requires accurate assessment of the heat fluxes through the walls of the furnace. This is particularly important for freeze lining operation which is designed to protect refractory materials exposed to chemically corrosive molten contents, or facilitate high temperature operation when the refractory materials are used at conditions close to their service limits. Numerical modelling of fluid flow and heat transfer in process vessels is often used to aid in the design of process vessels. Sophisticated models are used to analyse the three dimensional flow and heat transfer predicting the effects of electrical heating, magnetic stirring, buoyancy, shear forces, various cooling effects and ultimately heat fluxes at the walls of the furnace and refractory. Traditionally these models are applied to the separate single fluid systems in a vessel such as the freeboard region including the arc, the slag region and the metal bath. Boundary conditions such as shear forces and heat fluxes between connecting regions such as the slag and metal bath are either estimated or carried over from separate solutions. Shortcomings in these traditional approaches include the estimation of sometimes critical boundary conditions leading to unreliable heat flux calculations. Also when boundary conditions are carried over between solutions, the process is difficult to set up, time-consuming and finally not fully coupled. In this paper the definition and results of a fully integrated numerical model of a complete arc furnace are presented. The most important mechanisms acting in an arc furnace were considered, including the fields of electrical potential, current, magnetism, momentum, heat transfer and radiation. Temperature dependant properties included electrical conductivity, density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. The geometry consists of the freeboard, the arc, slag, metal baths and different refractory regions. Although the combined model of air, slag and metal would be defined as a multi-phase problem it is not solved as such. Instead the different fluids are separated by sets of special solid baffles. These baffles allow the implicit transfer of current, magnetism, heat transfer and shear forces between the different fluids and disallow mixing of the separate fluids. The strengths of the integrated model are threefold: Firstly, it provides robustness in defining the geometry and boundary conditions for the overall model. Secondly, it provides the capability to switch on and off individual mechanisms such as buoyancy, magnetic stirring and shear forces in order to observe their individual importance. Finally, it provides a useful tool in the design process through its ability to obtain results of parameter changes in short time scales.

"The South African ferrochrome industry has been faced with various challenges during the past few years, such as influences from the market, manpower strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa, and electricity supply constraints, placing increased pressure on the local industry to improve output in order to remain globally competitive. The year 2016 brought a dramatic change in the local ferrochrome industry, being marked by higher chrome ore prices and the takeover of some idle smelters.This study investigates the methods of technology acquisition used in various parts of the ferrochrome smelter value chain throughout a business cycle, and whether there is a preference for a specific acquisition in an explicit part of the value chain. The study also considers whether companies prefer to partner with local or global institutions for collaborative development, and the methods used by companies to protect their technologies.IntroductionSouth Africa holds the world’s largest chrome ore reserves and was the world’s largest producer of ferrochrome until 2012, when China became the leading ferrochromeproducing country. South Africa’s chrome ore (chromite) supply into the Chinese market has risen significantly from 36% of China’s total chrome ore imports in 2010 to more than 70% in 2016 (Fowkes, 2014; Creamer, 2017). China controls the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa (Fowkes, 2014). China’s high import rate of chrome ore has resulted in ferrochrome prices being driven down and a depressed ferrochrome market. The South African industry meets the chrome ore demands but loses out on ferrochrome beneficiation.Furthermore, the local ferrochrome industry has been threatened with the overall poor competitiveness over the past few years, resulting in four of the eight producers ceasing operations at the beginning of 2016. Challenges experienced by the producers, some of which are directly linked to production costs, include influences from the market, productivity that was affected by wildcat strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore, and electricity supply issues (Fowkes, 2014, 2013; Biermann, Cromarty, and Dawson, 2012). Ferrochrome production is energy-intensive and South African producers have faced higher electricity costs, electricity supply complications, and a weaker currency exchange rate since 2009."

"In South West Africa diamonds are mined from ancient beach deposits by the Consolidated Diamond Mines of South West Africa, Limited.To improve the control of mining production, a computer is used for the calculation of statistically more accurate and homogeneous ore blocks. Geological and sampling information has been digitized and stored on magnetic files.The figures derived for each block entail the calculation of the diamond size frequency distribution, the diamond density distribution and the ore reserve by using the density distribution.The diamond size frequency distribution is used for estimating the revenue in an ore block.A description is given of how a linear programming system can be used for production planning."

Application of dynamic simulation for a base metal processing plant is discussed. The plant receives ore of variable quality from two pits and blending had to be applied to maximise recovery. The plant employs multiple stage crushing, screening, dense media separation, two-stage milling, flotation and further filtration. Stockpiles and bunkers are used in the plant to cater for breakdowns and operating delays, the latter being appropriately incorporated in the model. A detail dynamic simulation model was constructed from the rock face to the filtration plant to assist the plant design, notably with definition of the ore blending method, sizing storage capacity and in-plant conveyors. The plant model was broken down to capital equipment items and various feed types and mass balances were tested to ensure that the production target is met. The dynamic simulation tested the proposed blending method, identified bottlenecks, produced risk profiles for all strategic storage facilities and overall helped minimise the project risks and improve confidence in the plant design. Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (Pty) Ltd (RPZC) operates an underground mine at Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia producing zinc and lead sulphide concentrates. It currently mines around 0.7 Mtpa run-of-mine ore containing around 6-10% zinc and 1.5-3.5% lead. As part of past exploration and current intensified exploration, a massive continuous low grade ore body was identified which grades at around 3% zinc equivalent. This ore body is near current mining infrastructure and could be amenable to bulk mining methods. In the present paper a concept is presented on how it could be exploited. As a precursor to exploitation of the low grade a number of enhancements are proposed for the current mining operations including: ? shortening load-and-haul distances by extending the conveyor raise further down the mine in a phased manner and back-filling of waste into mined-out stopes; ? use of mobile crushing plant at the crusher tip, and; ? installation of a system to allow scoops to load directly from stopes into ore passes close by combined with truck loops to haul from these ore passes to the crusher tip. To exploit the low grade ore body the following concepts are proposed: ? open stope mining from two areas at a total rate of up to 2 Mtpa; ? underground pre-beneficiation of mined low-grade ore near the stopes using either dense medium separation or X-ray sorting; ? pre-beneficiated tails back-filled to mined-out stopes and; ? pre-beneficiated product transported to surface by linking into proposed run-of-mine conveying system.

Whereas in the past, ladles were simply a means of transferring molten products from furnace tapholes to points of discharge be they casting pans or waste dumps, the ladle is now becoming a more integral and versatile piece of equipment in the pyrometallurgical plant. The drive behind this development is the need for continuous improvement in performance where better, faster and cheaper means remaining competitive in the global market. This paper will explore the technologies available for the rendering of a costly and otherwise cumbersome piece of pyrometallurgical equipment more efficient and versatile in adding value to the final product. Essentially it all revolves around heat and more importantly the loss of it when tapping. The common practice is to move the molten product to its point of discharge quickly with the minimum of interruption to prevent skulling and hence the cost associated with clearing it. The advances in Oxy-fuel burners, AC or DC ladle furnaces, converters, gas purging and high velocity, bath injection systems has increased the versatility of processes and enhanced the potential for adding value to intermediate products through down stream practices such as granulation and atomisation.

Failure and fracturing are often regarded as synonymous. While this is obviously true in an environment dominated by tensile stresses, it is still not clear how failure and macro fracturing are related in a compressive stress environment. Excavations at great depths are typically subjected to compressive stresses only. The fracturing observed around such excavations is therefore commonly assumed to be induced by such compressive stresses. The physics of such a phenomenon have unfortunately never been explained properly, so that the formation of these so-called extension fractures still remains a mystery. As the presence of fractures is an important factor affecting the stability of underground excavations, it is of practical relevance to understand their formation. In this paper, a possible explanation is proposed. It is argued that fracturing in a compressive stress environment is a secondary effect. Primary failure, in the form of micro fracturing and associated damage is assumed to precede the major fracture processes. The fractures are thus generated in response to material failure and may not directly be the cause of failure. The implications for material response and behaviour are discussed. The Rhodax inertial cone grinder, designed by France?s FCB Group Fives, is the result of three years, theoretical and mechanical research in the field of compression grinding by the research staff of FCB?s CRM minerals research centre. A number of potential uses have been assessed and will be discussed in the paper. The crusher is an inertial grinder that works on the pressurized bed fragmentation principle. The fragmentation force is caused by the rotation of unbalanced masses rather than by an eccentric mass, as is the case in a conventional crusher. This makes it possible to achieve very high reduction ratios. By controlling the speed of rotation of the unbalanced masses, the grinding force can be modified, thus changing the product size distribution. The paper describes the machine layout, operating principles, control parameters and will briefly describe the results obtained on reef, waste and ROM reject pebbles. Some comparisons are made with conventional crushing.

Graphite blocks are currently used in the concentrate - slag zone in primary PGM smelters, and can possibly be extended to the matte zone. This project evaluates the interaction between synthetic matte and graphite blocks on a laboratory scale. Static crucible tests were performed where graphite crucibles (prepared from standard and high-grade graphite) were filled with synthetic matte (27.7 per cent S ? 46.1 per cent Fe ? 17.0 per cent Ni ? 9.2 per cent Cu) and heated to 1550°C for different time periods (1?5 days). Matte penetration was evaluated using a SEM, while graphite dissolution was evaluated by measuring the carbon content of the matte with a LECO carbon analyser. Matte penetrated into standard grade graphite up to approximately 2 mm, while matte infiltration into the high grade graphite was limited to the immediate hot face. The saturation solubility of graphite in the synthetic matte at 1550°C was 0.43 per cent. Copper, iron, nickel, and sulphur were detected in an accretion that formed in the water-cooled part of the furnace. This accretion consists of mainly Cu-S and Cu-Fe-S based phases.

This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Mining) degree As a partial fulfilment for the degree of B.Sc. (Eng) (mining) at the University of the Witwatersrand, a dissertation was to be completed in the mining industry. This was done at Finsch mine, with the purpose of determining the best solution to the required secondary breaking problem. In order to complete the study of the secondary blasting method available for use in the new block 4, cave mining method at Finsch mine the following problem statement was identified and solved ?The methods currently in use, for the secondary breaking of oversize rocks at their source in the current production levels, are to be investigated, and their applicability to the new block 4mining project determined?. To effectively achieve this problem statement above; time was spent researching and investigating, in depth, the methods that are currently in use at both Finsch and Koffiefontein mines; so as to gain practical knowledge of these. The methods were identified and independently evaluated, taking into consideration factors such as costs of the equipment, time to break oversize rocks, advantages, disadvantages, safety and labour requirements, etc. This in turn then allowed for a direct comparison between the methods and the decision as to the best to apply to the new block 4 production level. The methods that were investigated included: ?Concussion blasting, where concussion bombs and lay-on charges are used to break hang-ups and boulders. ?Drill and blast methods, where holes are drilled in large rocks and charged manually with explosives. ?Emulsion secondary blasting, which is a new project in use at Koffiefontein mine from African Explosives Limited. ?The Ro-BustTM breaking system, a hydro-fracturing breaking system. Once all the methods had been evaluated and compared it was found that the Ro-BustTM Breaking system was the most applicable for the breaking of boulders, with, the Emulsion Blasting System being used for hang-ups. The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the un-fractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

ABSTRACT: Determining tunnel stability is a key issue during preliminary site investigation. In contrast, problems of excavatability have been largely ignored. While the choice of an economic tunnelling method is admittedly a clear priority in the planning stage, special investigations focus-sing on rock fragmentation (e.g. drilling or cutting performance, rock mass blastability or tool wear) are rarely carried out. This paper explores possibilities to quantify key parameters for rock mass excavatability in drilling, blasting and cutting by TBMs and roadheaders. RÉSUMÉE: La détermination de la stabilité du tunnel est une question clé lors des études prélimi-naires. En revanche, les problèmes d&apos;excavabilité sont souvent en grande partie ignorés. Tandis que le choix d&apos;une méthode de percement économique est évidemment une priorité claire dans l&apos;étape de planification, des investigations spéciales se concentrant sur la fragmentation de la roche (par exemple le comportement de la roche au forage, à l’excavation ou au dynamitage et l’usure des outil) sont rarement effectuées. Cet article explore les possibilités pour quantifier les paramè-tres clé de la roche lors d’excavation par forage, dynamitage, au tunnelier (TBMs) ou à l’excavatrice. Während der Wahl einer wirtschaftlichen Vortriebsmethode während der Planungsphase meist noch eine gewisse Priorität beigemessen wird, werden spezielle Untersuchungen zur Gebirgslösung (Bohr- oder Schneidbarkeit, Sprengbarkeit oder Werkzeugverbrauch) nur sehr selten durchgeführt. Diese Publikation zeigt Möglichkeiten der Quantifizierung von Schlüsselparametern für die Gebirgslösbarkeit auf, also der Bohr- und Sprengbarkeit, der Fräsbarkeit mit Teilschnittmaschinen und der Schneidbarkeit mit TBMs.

Slat-band chains, currently manufactured from Type 430 ferritic stainless steel, are used as conveyors in various industries. A process to strengthen these chains?with the aim of prolonging the lifetime of the conveyors?was developed recently. The process entails heat treating the cold-worked chain at 475°C,strengthening the material by precipitation of the Cr-rich phase a? at relatively long periods of aging. In the present work, it was found that increasing the interstitial content by solution heat treatments (at 880°C or 930°C) prior to cold rolling and aging, causes an increase in strength at shorter aging times as a result of the precipitation of chromium-rich carbides and nitrides. The solution treatments can introduce martensite into the microstructure if carried out at a sufficiently high temperature. This, along with the deformation caused by cold work, also increases the strength. Corrosion resistance is not affected by the treatments, but ductility is lowered. However, calculated critical crack lengths indicate that solution treatment at a temperature below the Ac1allows for a larger critical flaw size, and that the lifetime of the chains will probably be determined by fatigue. Although the duration of the service of the chains are reportedly controlled by wear, with these treatments the tensile strength of the material is increased to within acceptable limits for conveyor chains. The tensile strength is an indication of the wear or abrasion resistance of a material. It is expected that after the treatments, the wear resistance will be improved, but since embrittlement occurs, the fatigue resistance is lowered. It is concluded that the preferred processing route for the chains would be solution treatment at 880°C, fast quenching to trap the interstitial atoms, cold rolling and then aging at 475°C for 8 minutes.

Keywords: Furnace, decommissioning, care and maintenance, re-start, funding, nickel Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) operates two nickel mines, and treats concentrates from these mines as well as toll concentrates from the region around its Bindura Smelter and Refinery (BSR) complex. At the smelter, concentrates of at least 5% nickel content are blended and dried to 4% moisture in a coal-fired rotary kiln. Matte smelting of concentrate is carried out in a six-in-line electric arc furnace, where the furnace slag is granulated and discarded. Furnace matte is transferred via ladles into Peirce-Smith converters, where, after granulation, a leach alloy containing 68%Ni, 20%Cu, and 6%S is produced. Converter slag is recycled via the matte-smelting furnace. The onset of the global economic recession towards the end of 2008 resulted in a collapse of metal prices, worsening the local situation that was already marred by unfavourable macro-economic conditions in Zimbabwe. As a result, BNC mines were put on care and maintenance in November 2008, followed by Bindura Smelter and Refinery in February and March 2009 respectively. The business environment has since changed, and BNC is getting ready to re-start the plant. This paper describes the decommissioning of the Bindura furnace, asset preservation during the care and maintenance programme in the past two years, and preparation for starting up of the Bindura smelter in the near future.
