The rock mass properties such as deformability and permeability are highly dependent on the existence of cracks. The Ratio of Crack Opening Dependency (RCOD) was proposed as a new index to evaluate the deformability of infinite jointed rock mass. The RCOD is defined as the ratio of total amount of crack opening and the total deformation of jointed rock mass. The theoretical relation between the RCOD and the effective compliance of jointed rock mass is discussed and confirmed through two-dimensional numerical analysis by the SC-DDM, together with the applicability to the rock engineering. Les propriétés de masse rocheuse telles que la déformabilité et la perméabilité sont très dépendantes de l'existence de fissures. Le rapport de dépendance d'ouverture des fissures a été proposé comme un nouvel index d'évaluation de la déformabilité de masse rocheuse à assemblage infini. Le rapport de dépendance d'ouverture des fissures est défini comme étant le pourcentage de quantité totale d'ouverture des fissures et de déformation totale de la masse rocheuse assemblée. Le rapport théorique entre le rapport de dépendance d'ouverture des fissures et la compliance efficace de masse rocheuse assemblée sont traités et confirmés au travers d'une analyse numérique à deux dimensions par SC-DDM en même temps que l'applicabilité à l'ingénierie des roches. Die Felsmasseneigenschaften wie Verformbarkeit und Durchlässigkeit sind hochgradig abhängig von dem Vorhandensein von Rissen. Das Verhältnis der Riss-Öffnungsabhängigkeit (RCOD) wurde als neuer Index der Verformbargkeit von infinit zerklüfteter Felsmasse vorgeschlagen. Der RCOD wird als Verhältnis der Gesamtmenge der Rissöffnungen und der Gesamtverformung der zerklüfteten Felsmasse definiert. Die theoretische Beziehung zwischen RCOD und der effektiven Verformbarkeit von zerklüfteter Felsmasse wird diskutiert und durch zweidimensionale numerische Analyse mit SC-DDM bestätigt, zusammen mit der Anwendbarkeit auf Bergbautechnik.

In view of the singleness of traditional methods about international petroleum (Brant) price forecast, ten main factors that affect international petroleum price are fully analysed. Based on time series method and multivariate linear regression method, the simulation model with the theory and idea of system simulation is firstly established. And this forecasting system realizes visual operation under the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. So this article tries a new way for further exploring petroleum price’s running law and guiding its forecasting practice. Between 2000 and 2006, platinum production from the South African mines expanded from 206 to 307 tonnes (DME, 2007). Most of this additional metal has come from traditional ?narrow? reef stoping, generally taken to mean stoping in working places with a mining height of less than 1,5 metres. It is well known that narrow-reef stoping presents safety, technological and ergonometric challenges (Pickering, 2007). In planning for the expansion, which is still continuing, the platinum mining industry realized that it could not simply continue with traditional methods of narrow-reef mining. Particular issues identified were: ? High labour-intensivity: caused by use of hand-held rock drilling machines, labour-intensive support installation and stope cleaning; ? Dependence on rock-drillers: this occupation is no longer an attractive one and there is a reducing flow of new recruits; ? Safety: most of the work is performed close to the new faces, where there is the greatest exposure to the hazards of falling rock.

During the last few years a large number of pillars in different mines were investigated. Pillar conditions were evaluated using subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods. A critical comparison of the different methods showed some interesting coherence. This paper concentrates on experiences using the p-wave velocities as an indicator of pillar conditions. Während den letzten Jahren wurde eine große Anzahl von Bergfesten in verschiedenen Bergwerken auf ihren Zustand hin untersucht. Hierzu wurden subjektive, empirische, geophysikalische sowie numerische Methoden angewandt. Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den Erfahrungen beim Einsatz der p-Wellengeschwindigkeit zur Beschreibung des Festenzustandes. Le condition géotechnique d’une grand nombre des piliers des mines souterraines différentes sont examinées ces dernières années. On a appliqué des méthodes subjectives, empiriques, géophysiques et numériques. Ce rapport occupe aux expériences avec l’application de la vélocité des ondes de compression pour tracer le condition des piliers.

"This paper provides a progress update on three tapblock monitoring technologies that Hatch has been developing with our clients for non-ferrous smelting furnaces.The Tapblock Diagnostic System (TDS) is an advanced on-line monitoring system that uses temperature data along with embedded thermal model results to evaluate the condition of a tapblock over its campaign life. Hatch recently installed a second Tapblock Diagnostic System, some details of which are provided in this paper.The Tap-hole Acoustic Monitoring (TAM) system is installed on water-cooled copper tapblocks and uses the noise from the tapping channel to provide a qualitative indication of wear and deterioration of the tapping channel refractory. In addition, TAM can be used to monitor drilling and lancing performance, and potentially could also be used in the future as a guide for automatic drilling and lancing systems (Sadri et al., 2008).The third technology is the use of fibre optic sensors to measure temperature on the hot face and in the tapping channel of a tapblock. Fibre optic technology allows installation of numerous sensors in key locations where they are very sensitive to tapblock condition and also provide more extensive spatial coverage than is possible with traditional instruments. This paper provides an update on our efforts to address issues with premature failure of the sensor cables due to corrosion, and also converting the vast amount of data from the sensor cable into information that can be used by furnace operators."

One of the most promising options for extraction of copper from low-grade chalcopyrite ores by heap leaching, however, chalcopyrite is refractory and suffers slow leaching kinetics and poor overall extraction due to formation of a passivation layer on the particles. The solution composition is believed to strongly affect the formation of this layer. This paper examines the effects of the major cationic species of Fe3+/2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, and Al3+ and the anionic SO42− species in acidic ferric sulfate media with a composition simulating recycle heap leach conditions. It was found that altering the sulfate, iron or aluminium concentration had significant effect on the copper extraction, the concentration of copper slightly influenced the extraction, and the amount of magnesium had no appreciable effect. Also, iron and aluminium caused a change in the sulfate concentration, and the sulfate ions had the greatest influence on the extraction of copper under recycle leach conditions

Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study. Almost all the ore deposits of ferrous, non-ferrous and rare metals of Kazakstan, are exploiting by the open-cast method, are the complex-structural, multi-component ones. Their rational working requires precise organization of extracting works. In this connection it is necessary to set up the best intercommunications between drilling-blasting, excavating-loading and transport works. This requires the stable functioning of the quarry for dispatch of ore raw material of required quality with minimum of corresponding expenses. For this purpose, proceeding from the quarry’s ore output and the assumed parameters of the exploitation system, the first problem about rational arrangement of excavating-loading equipment in extracting faces is solved. By solving the problem the model with dynamic, adapting properties had been used. It was solved numerically by the method of statistical tests. By setting up the necessary link between type-sizes of excavating-loading and transport equipment, the minimum prime cost of loading and transportation of 1 ton of mining mass from the face to the receiving station was adopted as the criterion of optimality. Depending on the type of excavating-loading equipment, the efficiency function may be different. By using wheel loaders, their displacement between the faces is possible, therefore, the efficiency function of the problem may include expenses for their displacement. By using excavators like power shovel, the problem’s restrictions must exclude its displacement between the faces. The efficiency function consists of minimum expenses for loading, proceeding from set of volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality. The volumes of extraction from the faces, satisfying required quality of ore in output stream, are determined by the method of statistical tests. Sample range is given, proceeding from the restrictions for maximum productivity of the excavating-loading equipment. Volumes of extraction, not satisfying required quality, are cut off. The efficiency function meaning is then determined and minimized. Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. Open pit slope design has conventionally been effected as a bottom up function utilising available geotechnical information. This results in a decision criterion based on Probability of Failure and Factor of Safety with a risk assessment being carried out on the proposed design slopes. The design approach recommended reverses the process using fault event tree decision methodology. The consequences of this approach are that acceptable risk criteria have to be determined by mine owners. Slopes are then designed by the technical staff to achieve these corporate goals. Benefits that arise from the process are that the owners take a proactive decision on the risk benefit relationship allowing the technical staff to optimise the geotechnical exploration programme and design.

On the basis of laboratory test results a comparison of various parameters (unconfined compressive strength, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity indexes, mineralogy) is presented and discussed in order to outline certain correlations between them. Samples cover a wide range of lithological types coming from various sites of tunnels. A partir de résultats d’essais de laboratoire, une comparaison de divers paramètres (résistance à la compression simple, indices d’abrasivité CERCHAR et LCPC, minéralogie) est présentée et discutée dans le but d’en tirer certaines corrélations. Les échantillons couvrent un large éventail de types lithologiques provenant de plusieurs sites de tunnels. Basierend auf Laborversuchen, werden verschiedene Gesteinseigenschaften (Druckfestigkeit, CERCHAR und LCPC Abrasionsindexe) präsentiert und Korrelationen aufgezeigt. Die untersuchten Proben verschiedenster Lithologien stammen aus mehreren Tunnelprojekten.

Chemical Initiatives? Umbogintwini plant is the production facility of Chemical Initiatives? business. Umbogintwini?s J Plant manufactures sulphuric acid. The plant was designed and built by Simon Carves, and was commissioned in 1974. The plant was designed to produce 500 tons/day of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) at maximum rates. The Sulphuric acid manufacturing is through the famous contact process whereby liquid Sulphur is injected through dried air in a burner operating at 1000 °C to form sulphur dioxide (10.5% SO2). The SO2 gas is then cooled in waste heat boiler no.1 before being fed to a four pass converter which provides 99.5% SO2 conversion to sulphur trioxide (SO3). The SO3 gas is the absorbed by 98.5% H2SO4 through the inter-pass & final tower to make more concentrated acid and dilute it with water back to 98.5% H2SO4 in acid pump tanks and dispatched to storage tanks. The manufactured Sulphuric acid is supplied to a variety of industrial manufacturing customers includes Pulp & Paper industry, Mining industry, Chemical manufacturing industry etc. During the 1st quarter of the year 2007, Chemical Initiatives undertook a study to up rate the sulphuric acid plant output by 10% (i.e. from 500 tpd to 550 tpd).

The principal advantages of fibre optics as compared to copper wire are well known and include almost perfect electromagnetic isolation, light weight, small size, excellent transmission security and substantially better bandwidth/distance performance. The decreasing cost of the optical fibre technology (both fibre cable and equipment) has led to another generation of private networks, which provide much larger bandwidths, very high reliability and an increase of the maximum geographical coverage. The larger bandwidth allows to transport all types of information on a single network. Typical communication requirements are speech (audio), computer data, LAN info, control information, video, etc. OTN or ‘Open Transport Network’ is a transmission system based on the latest available technology in fibre optics. It is characterized by the dual ring approach, resulting in high network availability, and the integration of different types of services in one network. As such, it can fulfil almost all transmission requirements for voice, data, LAN, video and any special service required.

The magnesia-carbon refractories used in the ConArc process experience severe wear as a result of the varying slag composition during the blowing phase. This work determines the basicity range in which minimum as well as maximum refractory wear was experienced by the magnesia-carbon refractories during service. In order to determine an optimum slag composition, the crucible test in an induction furnace was used. The magnesia-carbon refractory bricks were cut into cylindrical crucibles to which a synthetic slag in the form of pellets was added. The basicity (B2) of the slag was varied from 0.5 to 3. Tests were done at 1 600°C for one hour. Apart from the crucible test in an induction furnace, visual inspection and SEM analysis were also done to investigate the corrosion mechanism. FACTSage® predictions about the interaction between refractories and slag were also done. These predictions were compared to the actual results attained. It was found that the extent of corrosion by slag attack decreases as the basicity increases. The most severe corrosion of the MgO-C refractories occurred at a basicity of 0.5 whereas the optimum basicity is above 2.0. SEM analysis indicated severe slag attack at the lower basicities with no visible refractory-slag interaction at higher basicities. TheFACTSage® predictions supported most of the actual findings. The Renard kimberlite cluster is located in the Monts Otish region of Quebec, Canada. A Canadian National Instrument (NI) 43-101 compliant resource statement for the Renard kimberlites 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the Lynx kimberlite dyke was first issued in 2008 followed by a Preliminary Economic Assessment and the development of a conceptual mine plan. Following a successful drill program in 2009 that greatly expanded the amount of kimberlite in Renard 2, a revised resource statement was issued in December 2009 comprising 23 million carats of Indicated Mineral Resources and 13 million carats of Inferred Mineral Resources, a threefold increase on the previous estimate. The project is currently the focus of a second Preliminary Economic Assessment and it is expected that a full feasibility and permitting program will commence in 2010 leading to the creation of Quebec's first diamond mine by 2013.
