This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal

A common problem encountered in the mineral sands industry is that the mineralogical measurements used in defining the resource are not readily converted to metallurgical recoveries, which are used to predict the quantity of the final products. The problem stems from the different objectives of the exploration and metallurgical assessment programmes, and is often compounded by the use of different laboratory techniques and mineral definitions. Common mistakes include the misapplication of routine analysis, incorrect interpretation of mineral recovery, the confusion of mineral recovery with product yield and inconsistent definition of the same mineral. Experience has shown that unless these potential mistakes are identified, the measurement techniques used during exploration and metallurgical assessment are not compatible, often resulting in large errors in the prediction of mineral production. There are no easy solutions to the problem, as there is no universal assay technique which can cost effectively characterize all the mineral sands resources. The recommended course of action will therefore require several iterations to optimize the assay technique to suit the resource. Fundamental to the success of the measurement technique is the understanding of the mineralogy, its behaviour during mineral processing and the quality requirements for the final products.

The authors have proposed and discussed storage of low temperature materials such as LNG, LPG and frozen food in rock caverns. In this case, as the rock mass around the caverns will receive effects of low temperature, it is necessary to consider the thermal behavior and the stability of caverns. In this study, strength and deformation characteristics obtained by the uniaxial tension test and the compression test at low temperatures were discussed. Using the results, temperature and stress distribution around caverns when LNG was stored, were analyzed. Then thermal behavior of the rock mass around caverns was discussed. Die Autoren haben Lagerung von Niedertemperatur-Materialien wie LNG, LPG und tiefgefrorenen Nahrungsmitteln in Felskavernen vorgeschlagen und diskutiert. Da in diesem Fall die Felsmasse um die Kavernen den Effekten der niedrigen Temperatur ausgesetzt ist, ist es erforderlich, das Thermalverhalten und die Stabilität der Kavernen zu berücksichtigen. In dieser Untersuchung wurden Stärke-und Deformationseigenschaften, die durch ein-axialen Spannungstest und Kompressionstest bei niedrigen Temperaturen erhalten wurden, diskutiert. Mit diesen Ergebnissen wurden Temperatur- und Stressverteilung um die Kavernen bei Lagerung von LNG analysiert. Dann wurde das Thermalverhalten der Felsmasse in der Umgebung der Kavernen diskutiert. Les auteurs proposent et discutent l'entreposage de matériaux à basse température, tels que le GNL, le GPL et des aliments congelés, dans des cavités rocheuses. Comme, dans ce cas, la masse rocheuse entourant la cavité subit les effets des basses températures, il est nécesaire d'étudier le comportement thermique et la stabilité des cavités. Dans cette étude, les auteurs discutent des caractéristiques de résistance et de déformation, obtenues par essai de tension uniaxial et essai de compression à basse température. En se servant des résultats, ils analysent la répartition de la température et des pressions autour des cavités, lors du stockage de GNL. Ils discutent ensuite le comportement thermique de la masse rocheuse autour des cavités.

In Canada’s metal mines, ventilation, which requires electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating, accounts for a significant portion of the overall mine’s underground power consumption. Mine ventilation systems are usually designed near the end of the mine design process and often designed for the ‘worst-case-scenario’ with respect to ventilation demand. In Canada’s metal mines this is commonly dictated by either diesel equipment usage or heat management considerations. Once designed, mine ventilation systems tend to operate at this peak level throughout the operating life of the mine. This is despite there being significant periods when this quantity is not required this is done mainly due to lack of appropriate ventilation controls. Consequently, such systems are inefficient and wasteful and this must be changed if mining operations are to remain competitive while meeting increasingly more stringent regulations of underground environmental conditions. The advances in computing power and modelling software now make it possible to design, model and schedule a mine from opening to closure. The tools used for this include several disparate types of software. A developing trend is to design and plan the mine using orebody modelling software, followed by using discrete event simulation to predict production and evaluate various operating scenarios. It seems that again ventilation design is not being integrated into this process. Although, several modelling packages exist for ventilation design, little work has been done on integrating ventilation modelling into the overall life cycle plan of the mine. This paper will present a discussion of the work where the authors are attempting to integrate discrete event simulation for mine planning with ventilation modelling to predict the ventilation requirements for the operating life of the mine.

As regulations on the transport, exposure, disposition and emission of these elements have become more stringent; it has become increasingly more difficult to derive the values from the resources. This paper outlines the fundamentals of alkaline sulfide hydrometallurgy and its successful application to arsenic, antimony and mercury bearing ores, concentrates, by-products, and other materials.

A new technology of atmosphere in inertization of fire section with the help of gazeous nitrogen is presented in the report. This technology is based on membrane air subdivision into two streams, concentrated with nitrogen (up to 99%) and with oxygen correspondently with subsequent giving them into the place of fire. This technology belongs to environmentally friendly ones and it has a great number of technical, mobile and economic advantages comparing with the rest of well-known methods of fire extinguishing. This technology application in Ukrainian coal mines allowed to reduce the member of isolated places of fire at the expense of their extinguishing efficiency.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. The presence of colloidal silica negatively impacts various hydrometallurgy processes. This paper details the nature of colloidal silica, operational issues caused by colloidal silica, as well as various mitigation measures. MMG Kinsevere observed severe phase-continuity instability, increased crud formation, and reagent consumption, and reduced current efficiency in electrowinning with a deterioration in copper quality. Historical mitigation measures were initially implemented but failed to solve the problem. MMG Kinsevere successfully achieved efficient silica removal without adverse effect on the solvent extraction with the use of DEHSCOFIX® SC12 coagulant. A week into the coagulant trial, silica concentration had dropped from > 1500 mg/L to within 500 mg/L. The solventextraction plant recovered its stability and again operated at maximum capacity. Additionally, improvement was observed on current efficiency and copper cathodes quality with use of the coagulant.

The concentration of cassiterite at Iscor's Uis Mine is described, and information is given on aspects of the concentration of iron ore at Thabazimbi and Sishen Mines. At Uis, a very Iow-grade tin ore is concentrated by three-stage jigging, spiral concentration, and tabling to give a high-grade concentrate with a recovery of 80 per cent of the tin. A Iow-grade tantalite-columbite concentrate is also produced. The possibility of recovering mica, the use of sluice boxes instead of spirals, and the recovery of cassiterite from minus 45 µm material are being investigated. At the two iron-ore mines, heavy-medium separation is applied to size fractions larger than 0,5 mm. The types of ferrosilicon and the circuits used for the recovery of ferrosilicon from the various dilute-medium circuits are described. The spiral-concentration plant being installed at Thabazimbi for the treatment of the minus 0,5 mm portion of the ore is described.

The copper tankhouse at Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery is an essential component of the Anglo American Platinum value chain. The tankhouse uses starter-sheet technology that was adopted in the 1980s, so dependence on manually intensive labour and overall operational excellence has a significant impact on process performance. An efficient, stable, and sustainable electrowinning process contributes to minimising energy consumption and reducing operational costs, and enables improved product quality and increased throughput. Historic performance of this tankhouse has often been suboptimum over prolonged periods. An in-depth operational review of performance from 2018–2024 was carried out to understand challenges, risks, and high-impact factors that contribute to poor performance. Implementation of adherence to fundamental operational basics identified from global best practice, such as the frequency and quality of cell cleaning and maintenance, preventing backlogged harvesting or maintenance, preserving cell-top furniture conditions and integrity of electrodes, preventing short circuits and poor current distribution, and maintaining a high level of operational discipline, has since contributed to an era of exceptional performance. Root-cause analysis fault trees pertaining to poor current efficiency and high scrap rate are summarised. Current efficiency has significantly improved since 2021, now consistently exceeding 88%. The copper scrap rate, previously believed to be limited to a minimum of 4%, achieved a historic monthly low record of 2.06% in 2023. Chemical and physical quality has considerably improved, and cathodes exhibit minimal morphological defects.

Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology, to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when it is attempted to maximise the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory test work was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimise the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimised in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory test work results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). ?esting was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures. L’ anisotropie characterise les roches foliées (schistes, gneiss, phyllades). Dans ce travail des essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés afin de déterminer le comportement anisotropique des roches gneissiques. L’ effet de l’anisotropie a été examiné par rapport aux propriétés méchaniques (résistance, deformation) et propriétés dynamiques (vélocité ultrasonique). En outre des essais des roches ont été exécutés a des compressions latérales successivement plus grandes afin de déterminer le comportement des roches sous grands charges. Anisotropie ist eine Eigenschaft der geschieferten Gesteine (TonSchiefer, Gneis, Phyllit, Marmor). Versuche wurden durchgeführt, um anisotrope Verhalten von gneis Gesteinen zu ermitteln. Der Einfluss von Anisotropie auf mechanische (Festigkeit, Dehnung) und dynamische Eigenschaften (Wellegeschwindigkeit) wurde bestimmt. Die Dreiaxialversuche wurden unter grossem allseitigen Drücken entnommen, um das anisotrope Verhalten auf grösse herrschende Spannung zu bestimmen.

Primarily ferrochrome is used to introduce chromium into steels and alloys. Chromium enhances hardness, hardenability, corrosion, abrasion and wear resistance of the steel. High carbon ferrochrome is one the cheapest sources of chromium, which finds large consumption in foundries and steel plants. However, carbon leads to problems viz. weld decay and sensitization of steels at elevated temperature causing catastrophic failure. Thus high carbon ferrochrome which otherwise enjoys financial edge over its low carbon grade is not suitable for final alloying or adjustment of chromium content. Subsequently, its addition burdens a steel maker. Hence, metallurgists around the globe have researched on finding out suitable technique for refining of ferrochrome. Traditional production methods of low carbon ferrochrome have drawbacks i.e. high refractory consumption, losses of chromium in slag and fumes etc-. Later these were overcome by adopting relatively new methods namely, metallothermic reduction, triplex process, vacuum technique to directly produce extra low carbon ferrochrome. This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

The SMR geomechanics classification system (adaptation of RMR for slopes) is reviewed with data from 87 actual slopes in Valencia. In a research project, SMR has been applied by a GIS system, as a method to forecast stability problems in future road construction. As a result of this work a methodology for GIS application has been developed. On revient sur la classification geomechanique SMR ( une adaptation du RMR pour talus et pentes) avec les dates de 87 talus existant autour de Valencia. Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche SMR a été appliquée, avec un système GIS, comme méthode de prévision de stabilité problèmes dans la construction de futures routes. Une méthodologie pour l’application du GIS a été développe. Das Geomechanische Einteilungssystem SMR (eine Anpassung des RMR an Böschungen) wird an Hand der Daten von 87 Böschungen im Gebiet von Valencia überdacht. In einem Forschungsprojekt wurde das SMR in einem Geographischen Informationssystem (GIS) als Methode zur Vorhersage von Stabilitätsproblemen bei zukünftigen Straßenbauprojekten eingesetzt. Das Ergebnis dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung einer Methodologie für die GIS-Anwendung

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutions' funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industry's concept of the unwritten `social licence to operate' is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

The empirical pillar strength formulae have been widely, and in most cases successfully, applied to design underground pillars for mines in the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC). This paper presents the case for combining the empirical method with numerical modelling when it comes to crush pillar stability analyses. The benefits include an understanding of potential failure mechanisms, which may then be accounted for in the designs. In addition, the impact of weak layers, such as shear zones, the impact of the dip of the orebody, differences in layouts, such as holing widths and the presence of advanced strike gulleys (ASGs) immediately adjacent to the crush pillars, and stress regime (k-ratio) may be studied using numerical modelling, as it is not accounted for in the empirical method.

It has generally been accepted that the volatile mater in a coal is the factor that determines whether or not a specific coal dust is an explosion risk. This paper presents the results of an attempt to relate the explosibility index (Kex) of South African coals, as determined in a AD-litre explosion vessel, to the volatile mater content of the coal and the calorific value of the volatiles. A good relationship between the calorific value of the volatiles and the explosibility index was established, which makes it possible to calculate the violence of an explosion, as expressed by Kex, for South African coals. The Kex value is but one of a number of parameters that influence the explosion hazard in a specific colliery and cannot be used as the sole predictor of the propagation of an explosion underground. Other parameters include the ignitability of the coal, temperature, humidity, dispersibility of the dust, methane concentration, amount of incombustibles present, and ventilation.
