Hydraulic fluid power systems are advantageous whenever power output must be accurately and safely controlled. The load movers, cylinders, jacks, rotary actuators and hydraulic actuators in these systems can be made to smoothly and accurately start, stop, reverse, hold position or move steadily under heavy and variable loads or torques. Because hydraulic systems are simple, compact, reliable, and low cost compared to other power methods and because they can deliver controlled power anywhere on the machine to which a hose can be routed, they are a pan of almost every type of machine found on a coal mining section. Some of the functions they perform are positioning drill booms, driving drill pots on roof bolters, positioning curter booms, raising, lowering, and swinging conveyors, driving conveyors on continuous miners, raising, lowering, and applying sustained loads to longwall roof supports, and advancing the face conveyor and roof supports in longwall mining operations.

The Bureau of Mines study described in this report was conducted in the Denver, Colo., area (1) to summarize existing conservation practices as related to the most beneficial utilization of deposits of sand and gravel; (2) to identify the conflicting positions of the aggregate producer, the mineral owner, nearby residents, and local government officials responsible for determining land status and for issuing operating permits; and (3) to show the need for planning in Denver and in other expanding communities toward obtaining the benefits of conservation of our rapidly dwindling mineral resources. In order to determine the effects of urbanization on the Denver aggregate industry, interviews were held with owners of sand and gravel operations, with producers of concrete and bituminous pavement, with city and county planning and zoning personnel, and with representatives of various interested organizations. The conservation and ultimate utilization of deposits of construction raw materials near expanding urban areas can best be accomplished by long-range land-use projection and the requesite cooperation of technically advised planning and zoning administrators, government officials, mineral producers, and land developers.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

Tills U.S. Bureau of Mines report briefly evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of basic dust control techniques presently used by U.S. coal preparation and mineral processing plants. These include ventilation, baghouse-type collectors, wet scrubbers, electrostatic precipitators, source control, sprays, good housekeeping, and personal protection devices. Two specific problems in these types of operations are also considered: dust collector system duct clogging, and control room dust control. Information provided in this report results from dust control research projects conducted by the Bureau at various coal preparation and mineral processing plants over the past decade to reduce workers' dust exposure. These studies indicate that plant ventilation systems normally provide the most cost effective method for dust control. Baghouses and scrubbers were also effective in specific applications, and examples of each are given. In extreme dust conditions, personal protection devices, such as respirators or the dust helmet, can also be highly cost effective.

"INTRODUCTION Froth flotation as applied to coal is a process for separating desirable carbonaceous material from undesirable inorganic matter. In general, the feed must be finer than one eighth inch in size. The principal use of the process in the preparation of coal appears to be in the treatment of the fine sizes produced by breakage during mining and preparation.The Bureau of Vines in Information Circular 6714 has published general information on coal flotation, summarized investigative studies of the process, and described operating plants throughout the world with their tonnage, reagent consumption and operating costs.4ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe present study of means for depressing pyrite and reducing ash ty froth flotation was conducted at the Northwest Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Wines in cooperation with the College of vines. On the other hand, a substance will not float if its surface attracts a liquid film more strongly than it does a gas film. All theories of depression depend upon this fact. A wetted particle of floatable size most likely will be found in the tailings after the flotation process has been completed.The crux of flotation is the selective wetting of the undesirable material that tends to float. Two general methods 5, 6, 7 of depression are in use: One combines a chemical substance with the surface to form a wettable compound, and the other employs some colloidal or ionic substance which the surface selectively adsorbs, thereby forming a wettable surface."

"One of the underlying reasons for the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines was the desire to promote greater safety in the mining and allied industries. Safety continues to be an important feature in the work of the bureau, and during the fiscal year 1929-30 the Bureau of Mines allotted $387,510 to the safety division out of a total appropriation of $2,249,670 (other than for helium).The safety division personnel consists of 22 engineers, 2 mine safety commissioners, 3 senior foreman miners, 18 foreman miners, 16 first-aid miners, 16 clerks, 10 cooks, and 3 laborers, a total of 90 persons. These safety workers are distributed through the 10 districts into which the United States has been divided for administration purposes. During the year 3 engineers, 1 senior foreman miner, 4 foreman miners, and 4 first-aid miners left the service. In general these men left the service to take up more lucrative positions.The 10 all-steel mine-rescue cars have headquarters as follows: Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature of ash, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions~ issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

This report presents pertinent data on all active water-flooding projects in Washington County, Okla., and describes in detail the operation and production history of five representative floods. The flooding of partly depleted oil-bearing sands to produce petroleum that would not be recovered by other methods is becoming increasingly important to the oil industry. In 1942, two water-flooding projects in Washington County produced 35 barrels of oil daily from 90 developed acres. In March 1951, 4,000 barrels of oil was being produced daily by the injection of 58,000 barrels of water on 19 active projects covering 1,645 acres. Several projects are being extended, and new operations are being initiated. Figure 1 shows the location of the active water-flooding projects in Washington County. The yearly oil production from Washington County increased from 1,076,000 barrels in 1948 to 1,720,000 barrels in 1950, owing principally to the effects of water flooding. To March 1951, permits to flood more than 8,000 acres in Washington County had been granted by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission.

In this study a generalized specification and costing model for high tonnage coal carrying conveyor belts of 3.5 to 100 miles is presented. These belt systems, in modular units or flights, of up to 9 miles in length can be considered in terms of gathering systems. The study format is sufficiently open to allow users to insert their own requirements and parameters. A specific case study is provided. Because conveyor belts are feasible almost anywhere, this study has not investigated any specific route or geographic location. Rather, it has concentrated on setting up an heuristic programming model for conveyor belt facility optimization and cost minimization. The analysis starts with the principle factors involved in the design of the system and their optimization for various cases. This is followed, in Section 5.4, with a factor by factor cost analysis based on industry data and the preceding optimization. The next step is the development of both facility and costing models suitable for computer analysis. Logic flow diagrams are presented at each major analytic step.

"Vanadium and uranium occur widely distributed throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah, and a few deposits have been found in northeastern Arizona and northwestern. New Mexico. The area in which it occurs includes approximately 10,000 square miles and is generally referred to as the vanadium region of Colorado and Utah.The majority of the deposits consist of replacement bodies and impregnations of rare minerals in the lower Morrison formation of Jurassic age. The ore bodies are flat, with irregular margins, and most of them conform to the stratification.The ""rim rock"" topography of the region includes many steep-walled canyons and plateaus, which afford an abundance of outcrops that have been responsible for most of the discoveries of mineralized areas. Delimitation of ore bodies within the areas is accomplished most effectively by core drilling from the surface.The deposits were discovered in 1899 and from 1911 to 1923 wore worked extensively for radioactive uranium ores, principally carnotite.The discovery and marketing of the richer and more cheaply mined pitch-blende ores of the Belgian Congo left the Colorado-Utah deposits without economic importance as sources of radium and uranium, and the region became inactive in 1923. After a period of comparative inactivity, the rising demand of the alloy-steel industry for vanadium renewed interest in the deposits, which were known to contain that metal. By 1938, vanadium production in the area had achieved respectable proportions, and new impetus was given to it by the United States’ entry into World War II in December 1941. In 1942, new treatment plants for vanadium ores were completed in Monticello, Utah, and Durango, Colo. In order to meet the requirements of these and other plants in the region, it became necessary to open new vanadium mines and prepare old onus for production.In an effort to stimulate mining, the Metals Reserve Company initiated a stock-piling program and appointed the united states Vanadium Corporation, to act as its purchasing agent.The extra production was expected to come largely from small, independent operators whose limited funds did not permit them to maintain development and exploratory programs. Study of conditions made it apparent that extensive exploration would be necessary to sustain production, and accordingly the Bureau of Mines initiated an exploratory drilling project on a cooperative basis with the Geological Survey. The principal objects of the work were to enlarge the known ore reserves of the area and, if possible, discover new ones. The results have been gratifying in both respects."

The objectives of this research were to define the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the aerosols associated with attached radon daughters in operating uranium mines, and to investigate the relationship between these aerosol parameters and operating conditions. Major Results and Conclusions The organic, inorganic and radiological characteristics of test chamber and active U-mine aerosols have been measured as a function of particle size. These measurements represent the first detailed analyses of the organic and inorganic components in U-mine aerosols and the first determinations of the details of the individual and total radon daughter distributions in operating U-mines. Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. This papery describing the mining methods employed by the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mining and Concentrating Co. at Kellogg, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the United States. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan mines are situated in the western part of the Coeur d'Alene district at Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho. The mines were discovered during the summer of 1885 and except for two short periods of labor trouble, between 1890 and 1900, have been in continuous operation. About 575 men are employed at the mine. The production is about 1,400 tons of lead-silver ore per day. This is treated in the company's concentrator and smelter at Kellogg.

The land mass of the Asia and Pacific region comprises 11 million square miles or about 15% of the total Earth's land area. The bulk of the region is contained on the Asian continental land mass. Australia, the world's largest island or the world's smallest continent, alone is almost as large as the continental United States. The islands of New Zealand, New Guinea, Borneo, Sumatra, and Honshu are among the largest in the world. Collectively, they constitute a land area of 1.1 million square miles or an area about one-fourth the size of the United States. The countries in the Asia and Pacific region represent some of the most vibrant economies in the world. Japan is undisputed as one of the world's leaders in manufacturing and commerce. Hong Kong and Singapore are significant both as entrepôt and banking centers. The economies of Australia, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan compare favorably to the level of the industrialized countries in western Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand have maintained strong economic growth during the past two decades. All these countries in the Asia and Pacific region collectively constitute a significant bloc as to raw materials production and consumption, as to manufacturing, and as to world trade.

A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as de- rived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems. Plans in the second area of interest--that of relating communications to mining operations-- were to observe mining operations and usage of communications; to gain insight through interviews with mine management, from mine superintendents to section foreman; and to look for correlation between communications, production, and safety. Lastly the communication systems needs and requirements were determined from first hand interviews of mine personnel, from the analysis that lead to the individual reports on the eight mines, and from an overview of all of the mines studied. The latter was done to find commonality between the needs of the individual mines such that system requirements having the greatest universal value could be derived, thus lowering per-mine cost of equipment through economics of scale. Armed with tape recorders, backgrounds in communications technology, and with an interview questionnaire that was improved as experience was gained, engineers visited the eight mines to obtain the raw data from which the needs and requirements could be developed through analysis. During the first part of the program two days were spent at each mine so that interviews and tours could be completed, and so that full eight hour shift phone usage recordings could be obtained for statistical analysis. One day visits were sufficient for those trips where tape recordings were not made. During the later trips less attention was given to the statistical nature of communications, and more to how communications relates to the total mining operation.
