In ventilated tunnel fires, smoke and hot combustion products may form a layer near the ceiling and flow in the direction opposite to the ventilation stream. The existence of this reverse stratified flow has an important bearing on fire fighting and evacuation of underground mine roadways, tunnels and building corridors. In the present study, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a CFD program (fire dynamics simulator) based on large eddy simulations (LES) is used to model floor-level fires in a ventilated tunnel. Specifically, the critical ventilation velocity that is just sufficient to prevent the formation of a reverse stratified layer is simulated for two tunnels of different size. The computer code is verified by checking the computed velocity profile against experimental measurements. The CFD results show the leveling-off of the critical ventilation velocity as the heat release rate surpasses a certain value. At this critical ventilation, the ceiling temperature above the fire reaches a maximum for both tunnels. The velocity leveling-off can be explained from this observation. An extended correlation of Newman (Combust. Flame 57 (1984) 33) is applied to the temperature profiles obtained by CFD. At the critical ventilation, temperature stratification exists downstream from the fire. The computed critical ventilation velocity shows fair agreement with available experimental data taken from both horizontal and inclined fire tunnels. The CFD simulations indicate that the Froude modeling is an approximation for tunnel fires. The Froude-scaling law does not apply to two geometrically similar fire tunnels. In 1983, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources in the Carrizo Gorge Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The 14,571-acre WSA, located 42 miles east of El Centro, CA, is underlain primarily by Mesozoic granitic rocks and pre-Cretaceous metasedimentary rocks. Six prospects were found within the WSA and two mines are adjacent to it. Mineral deposits within the WSA have had insufficient development and rock exposures for calculating resources. The WSA contains no identified mineral resources; however, further exploration may disclose gem quality minerals. Two mines adjacent to the WSA, the Pack Rat and Beebe Hole, have produced gem quality kunzite and aquamarine from pegmatite dikes. According to the owners, a significant amount of gem minerals have been mined here in the last decade. Based on past production and the characteristic minerals indicating gem-bearing pockets, additional pockets are likely. Similar pegmatite dikes occur from Mt. Tule to Carrizo Gorge and may contain gem-bearing pockets. Pegmatite dikes also occur in the WSA near Rockhouse Canyon, but contained few of the mineral associations indicative of gem-bearing pockets. Manganese occurrences north of the Beebe Hole and Packrat Mines and within the WSA contain low concentrations of manganese. Significant sand and gravel were not identified. There is no evidence of deposits of oil and gas, or geothermal energy.

To develop a reliable, remotely-controlled, mobile roof support to eliminate the need to set posts, cribs, or props while extracting coal pillars. Approach The primary danger during pillar extraction is premature caving of the mine roof. The roof must cave predictably and dependably to ensure the safety of miners. Support during retreat mining is usually obtained by setting posts, cribs, props, roof bolts, or a combination of these devices. These are set manually by miners in the working area. To help minimize the danger to mine workers and to equipment posed by premature falls, the Bureau of Mines developed the mobile roof support (MRS) system to secure the roof during pillar extraction. How It Works The Mobile Roof Support (MRS) is eight-feet-wide, ten-feet-long and five-feet-high, with twelve inches of ground clearance. It is ruggedly built and exerts less than 20 psi ground pressure. The MRS is powered by a 40-hp, 460-v AC permissible motor. The reversible, variable tram speed is 80 ft/min on a 20-percent grade. It is tire-mounted, has a trailing cable, and is remotely controlled either by a radio or a tether communication cable. The machine carries four 50-ton jacks which serve as props for working heights from seven to fifteen feet. Two jacks are chassis-mounted and two are on swing arms. Each jack has a cap which distributes the roof load to three paints. The swing jacks form a breaker row to stop falling roof and prevent caving Into the work area. One jack has a visual load indicator and a second is wired to the machine lighting system. Blinking lights indicate when the preset loading is being exceeded. In the case of excessive loads, an ability to remotely jettison either or both swing jacks has been incorporated into the system to permit removal of the MRS while the roof is still supported.

For the purpose of this paper a junction box is defined as " a fused switch, inclosed in an explosion-proof compartment, provided with a ready means of connecting or disconnecting a trailing cable without exterior arcing." Junction boxes are intended for use 'at the end of trailing cables and are usually placed outby the last open break through in a coal mine. Where it is not safe to supply current through nips or a trolley, junction boxes suitably spaced along an entry permit tramming and movement of machines with safety, although not with any considerable speed. Junction boxes serve a threefold purpose: (1) They prevent dangerous arcing at the outby end of trailing cables; (2) they afford a safe, practical means of fusing or otherwise protecting the trailing cable; and (3) they provide an efficient means of transmitting power from the power circuit to the trailing cable. The first purpose is the most important from a safety standpoint. Dangerous arcing-that is, arcing capable of igniting gas-frequently takes place where trailing cab1c.s are attached to the power circuit. At either 250 or 500 volts only a very small arc is required to ignite mine gas. The usual method of connecting the trailing cable to the power circuit by cable nips or trolley taps does not make a good electrical connection; hence arcing may be expected at any time. Furthermore, junction boxes eliminate the personal hazard attendant upon the use of trolley taps by removing the possibility of accidental contact with trolley hooks or wire and the liability to injury due to manipulation of the device. The HazCom Writer, created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is a software tool designed to help companies prepare their required Hazard Communications (HazCom) written plan and list all hazardous chemicals at the company's worksite. The social marketing goal was to provide a product for small- to medium-sized companies to use for federal HazCom rule compliance. The HazCom Wm'ter is a direct NIOSH response to customer and stakeholder needs (including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the mining community, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration- regulated companies).

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

Electric shocks are a serious problem in the mining environment. Because of extremely wide ranging use of electrically powered equipment in the mining industry, the hazard to personnel due to electrical shock and related injuries are not restricted to any single area but cover the entire spectrum of mining activity. Electrical accidents, resulting in personal injury, due to im- proper or complete lack of grounding of electrically operated mining machines, form a significant percentage of the overall electrical accident picture. The object of this paper is to describe methods of detection of unsafe electrical conditions with respect to the grounding of electrically operated mining equipment. It also includes a discussion of prototype instruments which effectively monitor the condition of the grounding safety devices currently in use on mining equipment and warn of dangerous conditions as soon as they appear. The paper is based on work accomplished under USBM Contract Number 50357115. The contract was initiated under the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center Program. It was administered under the technical direction of PM and SRC with Mr. Roger L. King as the Technical Project Officer. Mr. Daniel B. Dawkins was the Contract Administrator for the Bureau of Mines.

Preliminary results are given of solvent stimulation of two wells producing viscous oil (14°-17° API) from the Tar zone in the Wilmington field, California. The solvent (coker oil, an intermediate refinery product) was injected into the formation, and after a soak period, the well was returned to production. Data are given on crude oil properties, solvent properties, determination of volume of solvent in the produced oil, rate of oil production before and after stimulation, volume of additional oil produced, and volume of solvent recovered. Although further study and improvement of the method arcs needed, cyclic solvent stimulation appears to be an unqualified success in one well and a moderate success in the other.

A rural mail route passes within quarter of a mile of the mine. Paved reads from Heflin lead to Atlanta, Birmingham, and Montgomery. The country Toads leading from Heflin are well-maintained but are practically inaccessible during inclement weather. The road crossing the property within a hundred yards of the mine needs grading and repairing (see fig. 1)."

Composite diaphragms were used in the investigation of electrowinning Ti from TiC14 in a fused LiCl-KCI-TiC'2 electrolyte. Composite diaphragms tested were of two general classes--those consisting of two or more solid materials, and those which contained, in addition, a loose material. An electrowinning cell using a flat diaphragm is described. The maximum current density for these diaphragms was 300 amp per ft2. Lower currents permitted longer operation times. The composite diaphragms gave electrode efficiencies that averaged approximately 60 percent, and the electrowon titanium was of good quality--some Brinell hardnesses were as low as 68.

1. Estimates of reserves were made for three coal beds in Hamilton County the - Lantana, Sewanee, and Richland. Nine coal beds have been mined at one time or another in the county, but not enough information was available to estimate reserves in any beds other than the three given. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves for all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 53 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total 35 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were insufficient for making an estimate conforming with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove re-serves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves determined by this investigation.

The zinc-lead ore reserves of the Tri-State district of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, as of December 31, 1947, are estimated at a total of 66,100,000 tons of crude ore containing 2.18 percent metallic zinc and 0.38 percent metallic lead. The Bureau of Mines began estimating the reserves in October 1945 and completed the' work December 31, 1947. A total of 38,900 acres of land representing approximately 5 percent of the area of the district is covered in this report. The work was confined for the most part to properties developed or partly developed by drilling and underground workings, and to acreage sufficiently drilled out to indicate ore of enough tonnage to make a commercial undertaking. The acreage in which ore reserves exist is widely distributed in all three States. A map of the Tri-State area is shown in figure 1. The remaining 95 percent of the area is not necessarily nonproductive but represents, possibilities for future exploration and development of additional mineral resources when and if economic conditions or national necessity encourage such work. Of the total reserves, 41 percent are in Missouri, 38 percent in Kansas, and 21 percent in Oklahoma.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of an investigation for developing and applying procedures for stabilizing excavations openings in highly yielding ground. The approach developed in this report involves nonlinear modeling of the progressive relaxation of the zones of rock mass around the excavations opening where Coulomb criterion of failure is exceeded. Stresses are calculated by using a computer code; Coulomb-failure condition is examined for both intact rock and joints (using strength parameters [~] and c). The rock mass in the failed zones is relaxed by reducing the Young's modulus of the rock based on an empirical formulation that is a function of the shape of the opening and the extent of the failed zone. In addition, the material in the failed zone is assigned reduced strength paramters 0' and c'. The limiting (or convergent) relaxed zone is obtained through an iterative process by manually changing the rock modulus and the strength parameters between iterations. Support pressures are computed by applying forces normal to the excavation surface. The approach is applied to the analysis of stability and support requirements for an entry in a longwall coal mine.

"IntroductionThe Bureau of Mines is investigating the fundamental factors in breaking down coal at the face, which govern the production of lump coal in typical mines working, different coal beds. Tiffany and Nelson in 1923-21 conducted tests on methods of blasting and use of different explosives, in a mine working the Pittsburgh bed in Pennsylvania. They determined come of these factors quantitatively, and compared their results with those obtained when the regular mine practice was followed.Results of Previous InvestigationThe tests by Tiffany and Nelson showed that the use of the cartridge of smaller diameter than that used in mine practice, resulted in an increase of 5 per cent in the amount of lump coal passing over a 1-1/4-inch bar screen, with a reduction of 32 per cent by weight in amount of explosive required. On the other hand, they found that on reducing the weight of charge 20 per cent, and using the cartridge of larger diameter, the round would not throw down the coal satisfactorily.Experiments with ""snubbing"" showed a similar improvement in quantity of lump coal, end the coal that was blasted rolled forward into the working place. however, in recent tests at another mine where the coal Lad different physical characteristics, snubbing did not always result in the coal rolling forward, on account of clinging to the ribs, and was not found to be an advantage. Therein the writers of this paper recommend that tests be made before deciding upon the adoption of snubbing in a particular mine."

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil-shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt, at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

Many factors contributed to the decision to build a radiochemical laboratory at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center to investigate the application of radioactive isotopes and chemical compounds in extractive metallurgy. These reasons included the notable success achieved in biological sciences with radioisotopes, the development of reliable instruments and methods for identifying the isotopes and measuring their activities, and the commercial availability of radioisotopes in a variety of forms and known activities. The paramount reason, however, was the realization that better methods were needed for guiding and quantifying research to resolve the complex extractive metallurgy problems under study at the Research Center. This is the first of a series of reports describing the application of radioisotopes and radioactivity techniques in extractive metallurgy. The report includes a discussion of licensing and safety requirements, a general description of the laboratory and the methods used, a definition of the nature and scope of the research program, and a synopsis of the more important problems studied. Subsequent reports will concern radioactive techniques for solving specific problems in mineral dressing, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy.
